Woods: November 6, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In the final days of the great Death By Audio, the appearance of Woods as a special guest on Thursday was appropriate on so many levels. Of all the accomplished DIY bands of Brooklyn in the aughts, Woods perhaps best epitomized the ability to both stay true to your roots while evolving as a band. In short, they’ve managed to grow in their abilities and their popularity without selling out. The same can be said for Death By Audio, a venue that perfected a very workman-like authentic DIY aesthetic — consistently booking local and out of town touring bands while mixing in the occasional huge show. The special feature of this show was that Woods were reunited with founding member G. Lucas Crane, who parted ways with the group a few years ago to pursue his solo projects and also to concentrate on his work as one of the primary forces behind the Silent Barn. Lucas performed a brief solo set, mixing his special cassettes in a soundscape that segued nicely into the opening of the Woods set as the band joined him onstage in a seamless transition into an epic 15-minute “Bend Beyond”. We’ve seen several mindbending versions of this song over the years, but this take on ‘Beyond’ was truly remarkable as the band pushed the boundaries of the song through several jam sequences undoubtedly motivated by the historical nature of the occasion. We are streaming it below.

When ‘Beyond’ ended and Lucas left the stage, one would think that there would have been a little letdown, but this was clearly not the case. Woods was on a mission — whether it be welcoming old friend Alex Bleeker on “Cali In A Cup”, or dedicating “It Ain’t Easy” to the late Brooklyn musician and band friend Jamie Ewing, breaking out old material (“Rain On”), or multiple mentions and thanks to Edan and Death By Audio. This is a band who knows from whence they came and returned to old haunts to pay tribute in the best way possible, by playing a show that is perhaps the best night we’ve had all year. The capacity crowd seemed to feel that same way as they simply would not let the band leave despite equipment problems. When Edan located a spare drum pedal all was fixed and the show went on. The first of two encores was the band’s superb take on the Pink Floyd classic “Green Is The Colour”, a recent nyctaper recording of which ended up on a split single of Woods and MV+EE takes on the song on Piccadilly Records. The show ended with another of the band’s anthems, “Be All Be Easy”, which we are also streaming below.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a small stand in the front and center of the stage and mixed the on-stage sound with an excellent soundboard mix provided by DBA’s Edan. The mix combines primarily vocals and drums from the board complimenting the clear guitar and bass from the stage. The sound quality is simply stunning. Enjoy!

Mainland seems poised for fairly certain success. They write instantly likeable pop songs and have all of the other ingredients that make bands of their ilk popular — looks, personality and obvious musical chops. We invited Mainland to play a top of the bill spot on our CMJ Day Party in large part because it seemed so obvious when we first heard their music that this band will be in the fastlane to big things in the very near future. At this point, their outstanding debut EP Shiner is the entirety of their recorded output, but a full length album is not far behind. And apparently we’re not alone, as Mainland has garnered some great press surrounding CMJ and elsewhere, including a high profile piece in Interview. The band’s appearance at our show was exactly what we had hoped for — a very well attended high-energy set which included Shiner tracks (the title track streaming below) and several new numbers we anticipate will appear on their forthcoming long player. Mainland will next perform in NYC next weekend, November 15 and 16 at the Gramercy Theatre, opening for The Matches.

Acidjack recorded this show in the exact same manner as the previous sets from this show (Schoeps Onstage + SBD) and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

Wilco: October 30, 2014 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming (Two Recordings)

[photos by PSquared Photography – JFCB soundcloud photos by him]

For Wilco, the art of arranging a setlist for the third show in three nights, in the same city, without any repeats (sans one audible-called encore) must have been challenging — but ultimately rewarding. The idea that a band can play nearly 100 songs to three-thousand people a night and still retain the same performance energy and passion is remarkable. Indeed, Thursday’s show at the Capitol Theatre was perhaps the best of the three nights in Portchester. It certainly was the show with the deepest of the deep cuts. We were happy to finally hear “Bob Dylan’s 49th Beard” for the first time live with Wilco, along with never-heard-before alternate version of Wilco’s earliest “hit” the acoustic-led “Outtamind”. Both of those tracks are streaming below. The setlist was also heavy in the Wilco/Bragg/Guthrie tracks that don’t make it out very often and several obscure tracks from all of the albums. “Candyfloss” brought us back to 2004, and “Forget the Flowers” was right out of 1997. This night’s acoustic segment was the oddest of the three, as the usually slow-to-crushingly-loud “Misunderstood” was charmingly understated, and the band’s finale was a cover sung entirely by the audience. While we prefer that Wilco sing “Ripple” themselves, the band’s sincere tribute to the history of this venue was quite well thought and ultimately effective.

Our two recordings for this show were captured from the exact same excellent front left corner of the soundboard location as the previous two nights. My recording information is identical from the recording of the 29th, and for this night we have added JFCB’s excellent Milab VM-44 Cardioid pull. Both recordings are similarly superb but have unique characteristics. Enjoy!

Wilco: October 29, 2014 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming (Two Recordings)

Its not easy to trek up to Portchester for three straight nights for three-hour concerts in the middle of the work week. But this is Wilco and they ultimately make it infinitely worth all of the travel and sleep deprivation. The three shows at the Capitol Theatre were also special for their own unique reason — its Wilco’s 20th Anniversary as a band and they are revisiting literally the entire catalog on this tour. Each of the three nights offered a completely different song selection (with only one repeat all week) so that we experienced nearly one-hundred different Wilco songs during these shows. Wednesday’s show was perhaps the strongest of the three and on this night there were multiple deep cuts including songs I haven’t heard in years (Being There‘s “Hotel Arizona” and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot‘s “Radio Cure” were two) and a couple that I’ve never seen played live in the dozens of live Wilco experiences. But for me the one standout track was the Wilco “white whale” (Johnny FCB’s description) — the first and only lead vocal track by bassist John Stirratt “Its Just That Simple” from the band’s first album AM. John totally nailed this song and it was also tremendous to hear the crowd’s enthusiastic response to Wilco’s only other remaining original member’s chance under the spotlight. I am streaming that performance below, along with the semi-rare “Airline to Heaven”.

Our recordings from this night are also probably our best of the week. The crowd issues were prevalent throughout the week but on this night the area around our microphones was not too bad. I utilized the Schoeps cardioids pointed directly at the stacks from the front right corner of the soundboard cage. Our pole was also raised to the maximum allowable height at this venue. Acidjack recorded from the same pole with a different model of Schoeps cards. Both recordings very accurately reflect the superb room mix by Wilco’s legendary FOH Stan Doty. Enjoy!

The first night’s recording is here, the final night will be posted next.

Oneida: October 17, 2014 Secret Project Robot – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The relationship between this site and Oneida is such that we feel musically bound to capture every gig that the band plays locally as possible. On Friday last, the odds were against us, as several previous engagements (including our long-planned J Mascis capture) threatened to prevent our Oneida streak. Fortunately, a new friend and contributor came to the rescue — old-time taper and recent re-entry into the world of NYC taping Eric PH was able to attend and record Oneida show at their home studio Secret Project Robot. The show began as our recent recorded shows have done with new-ish tracks “Cedars” and “Economy Travel” before the band stepped back in time to play some “oldies”. “Caesar’s Column” is a song from ten years back that the band has played occasionally over the years, but I don’t think in the many times I’ve seen Oneida that I’ve ever witnessed it played. The setlist also included two tracks that we believe are new songs before the band finished with a couple of favorites. We are streaming the closing “You Get Brighter” which ended this high energy set on a peak.

Eric recorded this show with Church Audio cardioid mics from an up close position and the sound is both crisp and very clear due to this excellent location. Enjoy!

This is The Best FREE Day Party in the History of CMJ – Thursday at Cake Shop

[Mike Polizze of Purling Hiss – photo by PSquared Photography]

Yeah, I know its some pretty silly hyperbole, but really. This show is amazing. We’ve done a bunch of CMJ shows over the years and they’ve all been special in their own way (Sharon Van Etten solo in 2008), some were even just downright great (White Fence and Widowspeak back to back in 2011), some just crazy fun (She Keeps Bees and Diamond Rings back to back 2010), but this year’s show is just truly superb from start to finish.

taper-larger

If you don’t believe me, at least believe our press. This is by far the best press an NYCTaper CMJ has ever received — this is head-spinning stuff:
Time Out New York raved about Purling Hiss and us — “the Philly crew headlines a fun-sounding day party sponsored by indefatigable DIY show-recordist NYC Taper”
Flavorpill calls Purling Hiss a “choicest pick”
AM-NY called Purling Hiss a “Band To Watch”
WKDU-Philadelphia says that Purling Hiss and Amanda X are “not to miss”
The Guardian lists Amanda X as one of “19 Bands To See”
Deli Magazine is psyched to see The Kickback
doNYC loves the Whiskey Bitches
UnRecorded’s “Top Picks” for CMJ 2014 includes Mainland
Music Host Network lists Mainland as “Top Bands to See”
QRO Magazine “recommends” our show
Oh My Rockness gives us a “star”
Gothamist’s Best of CMJ 2014 “Cheat Sheet” lists our show first on Thursday
Hype Machine “recommends” our show as the best blog shows of 2014
Impose Magazine lists our show as “The Best of CMJ 2014”
brooklynvegan lists our show among the choice selections for “What’s Going On Thursday”, calling Purling Hiss “awesome”.

Oh yeah, and beer. We’re happy that Sixpoint Brewery is again sponsoring our show. That basically means that our guests can consume large quantities of Sixpoint for free if you get there early, or for half-price ($3) if you slack off and get to Cake Shop late.

J Mascis: October 17, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

October 21, 2014
By

j-mascis-13

As we’ve noted before, Dinosaur Jr holds a special place in the history of NYCTaper. One of my first recordings for the site and the one that seemed to put us on the blog map was a Dinosaur Jr. show at Irving Plaza in 2007. Over the years, we’ve recorded the band many times, and most recently acidjack and JFCB’s captures of the mega-Dino Jr show at Terminal 5 with a plethora of special guests has been one of the most popular recent offering at the site. So it was only natural that a solo J Mascis show at our favorite venue would be the natural evolution of our relationship with this artist. J recently released what is essentially his second proper solo album Tied To A Star (Sub Pop), and he’s currently on tour to support the record. At Bowery Ballroom, it was just J and several acoustic guitars with a ton of pedals. For the most part, he played it pretty straightforward, while occasionally taking advantage of the looping and sampling capability to jam with himself. The setlist included half of the new album and healthy dose of Dinosaur Jr tracks. We are streaming below our two favorite parts of the show, including a blistering guitar solo that extended the new song “Heal The Star” to beyond six minutes and the very J-like cover of the Mazzy Star classic hit “Fade Into You”. J’s tour picks up again in mid-November when he goes West before touring Europe in December.

hi and lo and I recorded this set in our usual location at Bowery, front of the balcony next to the soundboard. hi and lo employed the MBHO cards on a clamp pointed out in front of the board area while I mounted the Schoeps cards on a stand. I blended the sources fairly evenly, each offering a slightly different locale and microphone style so that the result is a pretty excellent full-bodied capture of this solo acoustic show. Enjoy!

White Fence: October 13, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

October 20, 2014
By

white-fence-10

When I think about CMJ week, White Fence always comes to mind. It was 2011 when they played our show — a frenetic set that was one of the best if not the actual best set ever in the many years we’ve presented CMJ parties. Three years later, White Fence has become exactly what we believed possible back then — a consistently excellent band that has produced a plethora of remarkably pure and faithful sixties and seventies styled psychedelia and garage rock in 3 to 4 minute bursts of goodness. The band now records for Drag City Records and their latest album is their first for this excellent label. For The Recently Found Innocent is also the first album recorded outside of Tim Presley’s home studio and he chose an excellent collaborator to help produce this album — the equally prolific Ty Segall. Found Innocent is a more conventional White Fence album, although it certainly does not deviate from the the band’s overall sound. Last Monday, White Fence was back in town and they will be on the East Coast through CMJ week. Their set at Baby’s All Right was a headline spot on an excellent three-band bill and it didn’t start until almost 1am on a school night, but the crowd for the most part stuck around. Tim has employed a couple of new players for this touring band, but the result was consistent with prior live White Fence experiences. The live show gives a different energy to the material and the songs take on altered arrangements from the recorded versions. The Baby’s set maintained a high energy for over an hour and while the setlist covered much of the new album, it was two older numbers where the band stretched out and jammed a bit. “Baxter’s Corner” has for years been the go-to for extended performance and this night it was again a burner, but also “And by Always” was a sprawling treat and we are streaming that number below.

This week White Fence will be playing at least four CMJ shows, including the Panache Booking CMJ “Hangover Brunch” at Baby’s All Right on Sunday where they will be playing an acoustic set. We will be there to record that special set.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed near the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Wussy: October 11, 2014 Private House Larchmont NY – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The nights like this one are the ones to cherish. After Wussy’s Friday show while I was breaking down equipment, I was invited to a private house concert by Wussy for the following night up in Larchmont in Westchester County. Fortunately, I had no plans so that I was able to take the quick drive up to attend and record this event. It was clear from the outset that this was going to be special as a spread of gourmet Indian food was presented to the band and all the guests. After setting up my equipment with the help of the band, all of the guests made it downstairs to a family room large enough to host a small concert. Lisa Walker and Chuck Cleaver played seated with Lisa on acoustic and Chuck on a steel guitar — or as Lisa called it “Campfire Wussy”. The band also put together a very unique setlist including some Wussy Duo numbers, some deep cuts, and the first full band performance of an Ass Ponys track. And of course, the band spent much of the between-song banter as they often do, ribbing each other and telling amusing anecdotes. From my vantage point sitting less than ten feet from the band, it was truly a unique and special experience. We remarked that Friday’s show featured a wonderful version of “Motorcycle”, and Saturday’s show featured a different arrangement that was equally breathtaking. That song is streaming below. Wussy will return to the NYC area on January 17 for gig at a venue that is not yet announced. See you then.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards positioned directly in front of the band. I also used a single DPA omni microphone and a single line out from the modest PA used to amplify the vocals and guitars. With the onstage Schoeps as the primary recording, I used the other sources to supplement the depth and also the vocals (upon which I applied some reverb). I’m quite pleased with the excellent results. Enjoy!
