Wussy: October 10, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Wussy’s first NYC show in six months was perhaps their most important East coast show thus far — a headlining gig on the Friday night of the CBGB Festival at Knitting Factory. Back in the Spring, a high profile gig like this would have been not likely for Wussy, but since the release of their latest album Attica and the universal praise it received, there has been a groundswell of support for the band and a higher national profile. To be fair, Wussy has had a modest but fervent and faithful fanbase for the entirety of their existence. Back when they played Cake Shop back in 2010, we noted that fans had come from as far as Canada to see the show. Those fans are still supporting the band — at the Knit there were travelers from Seattle and from Peru — but there are just more of them. And that’s a good thing. This is a band with a unique male/female dichotomy and truly superb supporting instrumentalists with solid songwriting, an authentic take of mid-Americana rock and a healthy dose of humor. If any band deserves a greater audience, its Wussy. At the Knit on Friday, we saw a band operating on all cylinders. In particular, Lisa Walker continues to impress with her growth as a performer. As a request, the band performed a rarely heard Lisa song “Motorcycle”, which on the album (2012’s Funeral Dress) is a sweet but sad ode, while Lisa’s vocal performance on Friday gave depth to the song with a world-weariness and longing in her voice. A truly remarkable performance that encapsulates what is special about this band. My other favorite part of this show was during the encore segment when the band jammed on a theme from their own “Yellow Cotton Dress” before breaking into a tremendous cover of the Joy Division/New Order classic “Ceremony”. That performance earned the band a second encore call and its streaming below. Wussy returns to NYC in January and we’ll certainly be there then too.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps positioned on a high stand at the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed from the band’s local FOH David. The sound quality is quite outstanding. Enjoy!

After this show, I was invited to a private house concert by Wussy on Saturday night. That recording will require some extra mixing, but should be posted on the site by the end of the week.

Mr Twin Sister: October 4, 2014 Babys All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The simple fact that Mr Twin Sister still exists as a band is in itself quite remarkable. The vast majority of groups that go through the buzz cycle do not come out the back end intact. In 2010 when the band was simply “Twin Sister”, we were among the earliest media outlets to sing the band’s praises — and rightfully so. “All Around and Away We Go” was their first major breakthrough song and it was a clever earworm and interesting dance-rock mix, akin to influences as wide at Tom Tom Club and Sade. But there was always something more than just a pop band to Twin Sister — something a little offbeat and perhaps dark — and when they signed to Domino Records, the relationship only produced one record before an amicable parting. This would be where most bands call it quits. But Twin Sister consists of a bunch of friends from Suffolk County of all places, and they perserved through this period (which also included a nasty tour bus crash) and have come out stronger. With a new-ish band name and an outstanding new self-titled self-released album, Mr Twin Sister 2014 is a band poised to take the path for which they were originally intended. The coming out party took place this past week at Baby’s All Right where the band played two very sold out shows — indicating that the fanbase has remained and that the album is generating excitement. We caught the second of the two nights on Saturday and from the outset of their set, it was clear that Mr Twin Sister is truly back. Lead singer Andrea Estella is in good voice and exhibited confidence and a little playfulness, but the multifaceted (two keys, guitars, sax, effects) band also impressed. And there were guests, in particular a string section played on the final two tracks of the main set, and we are streaming below the strong version of “Blush” with strings. If the strength of the album and of these Baby’s sets are an indication of things to come for Mr Twin Sister, vindication will soon be theirs. And it will be hard earned and well deserved. There are no local dates currently scheduled for Mr. Twin Sister, but they begin a brief tour next week opening for Julian Casablancas in Philadelphia, Washington DC and dates further south.

This set was expertly mixed by the band’s touring FOH Jonathan Low and recorded by house FOH Jeff Swart from the venue’s multitrack system. I have matrixed the house mix with the two room mics and the result is superb. Enjoy!

So Cow: September 20, 2014 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

So Cow Cake Shop

So Cow released their excellent new album The Long Con on September 16, a date that fell square in the middle of a rare US tour. The tour was scheduled to coincide with the excellent Gonerfest thrown by their record label Goner. The tour also included two NYC shows, and we caught the second one at Cake Shop last week. This was the first time we’ve seen So Cow in over four years since a great set at the now long-departed Monster Island Basement in early 2010. At that point, Brian Kelly was playing with a tour band and recording alone, but now So Cow is a proper working band and The Long Con is the first full length album with the trio. The result is that the album sounds more like the live show we encountered in 2010 and again last week, and less like a Kelly bedroom recording. At Cake Shop, the band worked through a nice mix of material old and new, including the first single from the album “Barry Richardson” that we are streaming below. The album has received some excellent reviews, including a fine piece in PopMatters this week. We expect that the positive attention will propel this excellent band and that it won’t be four-plus years before we see them live again. At least I hope it won’t be.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted to the short ceiling in front of the stage and mixed with DPA omnis positioned in front of the stacks. The stage-mount provides a clear capture of the instruments while the stack tape is vocal heavy. The mix is adjusted to accentuate the positives of both sources and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Glenn Tilbrook: September 25, 2014 City Winery – Flac/MP3/Streaming

GlennTilbrook City Winery
[screen cap from this video]

As one-half of one of the best songwriting duos of the latter half of the twentieth century, Glenn Tilbrook could easily coast on his merits into a comfortable retirement. But Tilbrook last year released one of his strongest records in decades Happy Ending that could rival the finest output of the Squeeze oeuvre and he is currently on tour in the US through the entire month of October. We were fortunate to catch one of the two shows he played at City Winery last week. Glenn was in great form from the start, engaging the crowd with his very Brit sense of humor and meticulous guitar work. We were most delighted to hear that Glenn’s sweet tenor is as strong and clear as it was the first time we Squeeze back in 1981 (Pier 84), the Mercury Lounge in 1996 and through the time when they appeared at the Nokia Theatre in 2007. On this night, he played two sets and nearly two hours of music featuring the strong new songs (“Everybody Sometimes”), material from his Fluffers period and of course a very healthy dose of Squeeze classics. City Winery is blessed with an excellent sound system and good views (along with some amazing wine) and this night really could not have been more enjoyable. In November, he will tour with his writing partner Chris Difford in the UK, and it was announced at this show that the duo will come to the US in May of 2015. We very much expect to be there then.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted directly behind the soundboard and blended with an extremely tastily mixed soundboard feed provided by house FOH Jack O’Hara. The sound quality is quite superb. Enjoy!

The Sharp Things: September 11, 2014 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Of all of the thousands reviews I’ve written for NYCTaper, the words needed to describe this performance by The Sharp Things at Mercury Lounge is certainly the most difficult. But these are just words. What the band did on this night was exponentially more difficult than anything I could imagine a musician would have to endure. On the morning of the performance Steve Gonzalez, the longtime and original Sharp Things drummer and multi-decade friend of the band’s protagonist Perry Serpa, passed away at the age of 49. I asked Perry to talk about the night:

He, Steve Gonzalez, was our drummer but also my best friend of almost 40 years, so he was very much a part of our family. We had found out about his passing during our soundcheck for this show and while I was ready to just walk away from it, my band, our bandmates, our family and friends insisted that we play, and so we did. And it was the best thing because the evening ended up being a wonderful, communal celebration of his life in a place that he loved playing.

The band is gearing up for the release of the third album in the four-album “Dogs Of Bushwick” series. Adventurer’s Inn will be released on Dive Records in November. This special Mercury set featured a mix of older numbers and included a few of the newer songs we’ll expect to hear on the new album soon.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cardioids set up at the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH David. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Growlers: September 18, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

[photo by Daniel Topete – full set at We All Want Someone To Shout For]

This week the Growlers released their fifth studio album Chinese Fountain to universally positive reviews. The album represents the continued maturity of this Southern California “beach goth” outfit. While the earlier records went for a kind of lo-fi scuzz-rock production, the new album is a stylistic shift to a more refined sound. The result is that the songs benefit. The Growlers have ultimately always been about the songs — three minute nuggets of melody, surf guitar and clever lyrics — and Chinese Fountain is perhaps their strongest set of songs. The tour in support of the album reached Bowery Ballroom last week and what a show it was. Nevermind that the show was opened by a ten-minute set of tongue-in-cheek karaoke by drag queen “Tina”, or that that mid-set there was an authentic Chinese dragon parade, or that it seemed that the entire band, crew and front rows of the crowd stage-dived for over two hours straight, this show was a monster. The band’s set lasted over two hours and consisted of virtually the entire new album and twenty-nine songs in total, and while the craziness went on all around them the music virtually never stopped. This is a show not be missed, and for those out West the tour continues through October before moving the Europe for November.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in our traditional Bowery balcony spot and mixed with an as-always outstanding board feed from FOH Kenny. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

I’m not sure there is a currently working musician who produces as consistently excellent music — live or on record — at does Ty Segall. His new album Manipulator is yet another Ty album that shines from start to finish and the tour in support has raged from city to city. Last week Ty Segall came to NYC for two shows at Webster Hall (alas no secret DBA show) and we were there for the first night on Wednesday. Ty’s fans always vociferously exhibit their love for his music and this night was no different. Five songs into the set the venue’s crew had to remove the metal photo pit barrier to avoid crushing people to death. After a quick break, the set continued in earnest and the new space permitted a neverending parade of stage divers and jumpers, including ultimately the artist himself. The setlist was similar to most recent tours in that the band played most of the new album (in this case 13 of 17 tracks) before the second half of the night was dedicated to the older material. But the crowd was with them all the way — old or new — for the full ninety minute set. We’re streaming one of our favorite tracks from the new album “Green Belly”. Ty Segall’s US tour is coming to a close in the next few days, but he’ll then spend six weeks touring through Europe.

I recorded this set from the soundboard perch in the front and center below the balcony with the Schoeps cards mixed with an excellent feed from house FOH Rafael. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Wilco: September 7, 2014 Lockn Fest (2nd Night) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Wilco’s second night at the Lockn Festival is notable for what was missing — any songs played on the previous night. In the world of jambands, playing consecutive shows with different setlists is common. But Wilco is a songwriting band, not a jamband, and to play a completely different show on consecutive nights is rare and difficult. And for the second night of Lockn, we were again treated to a career-length selection of material celebrating the band’s 20th anniversary. Of particular note is the Doug Sahm tune “Give Back the Key to My Heart” originally covered by Uncle Tupelo but which has been popping up in Wilco sets in recent years. We’re streaming it below. All three of the Wilco shows at the Capital Theatre in Portchester in the end of October are now sold out.

This set was recorded by NYCTaper contributor Kubacheck in the same manner in the previous night and the sound quality is equally excellent. Enjoy!

Jane Lee Hooker: September 8, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

September 15, 2014
By

JLH Knit

I’ve been interested in seeing Jane Lee Hooker for quite some time. The concept of the band — that is an all-female blues band made up of punk rock veterans — seemed interesting and potentially a whole lot of fun. When I finally saw JLH at Knitting Factory last week, any fears that the band might be a gimmick were very soon allayed. The dual lead guitars of Hightop and T-Bone were instantly recognizable as the driving force behind this band and that shouldn’t come as a surprise as both guitarists have deep pedigree as co-members of Helldorado and Hightop as a member of Nashville Pussy. Veteran punk rockers bassist Hail Mary and drummer Cool Whip are the backbone of the band and out front is the vibrant vocalist Dana Danger. As a unit Jane Lee Hooker is super-tight, reflecting not only their experience but musical familiarity among the members. But the real attraction is the raw energy that the quintet exhibits on stage. The setlist is a series of classic blues covers conveyed in an authentic style faithful the originals but reflected through the looking glass of New York punk. JLH is such a revelation that none other than legendary bassist Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, Mekons) approached me and raved about the band, asking when the recording would be available. JLH recently returned from a local tour and will appear again in NYC next week at Mercury Lounge on September 24.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted high next to the soundboard and mixed with a superb feed provided by house engineers Keith Milgaten and Ben Fitterman. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
