Rocketship Trans Pecos

The sun was so bright in the yard of Trans Pecos for Rocketship’s afternoon show on Sunday that ToddP was passing around tubes of sunscreen to the crowd. It was that kind of day — friendly, fun and bright. The new outdoor area at Pecos was the perfect setting for Rocketship and Todd to do a throwback of sorts. Rocketship hasn’t toured since the 90s and not entirely coincidentally they also played the first show ever booked by ToddP in Austin in 1996. The band was in town for the NYC Popfest (they’re also playing the LA Popfest) but in the afternoon before their flight West they visited with old friends and old material in a setting that must have reminded them of their home in sunny California. Rocketship played everything from their first single (“Hey Hey Girl” streaming below) to several songs on the one full album they released on Slumberland Records, and indeed a couple of brand-new unreleased songs. Considering that the Rocketship catalog is a bit of a puzzle of singles, EPs, compilations, split-albums and long plays (excellent summary here), it was no small feat the band really quite democratically cherry-picked from seemingly all of their eras. But in the end, this show was all about the vibe — of which there were a ton of good ones. The band played forty-five minutes, but it easily could have been longer save for the plane the band had to catch. But for that near-hour, it was indeed a perfect day.

I recorded this set with the large diaphragm Neumann 102s set up at the front of the stage and mixed it with a fine board feed. The result is a superb recording of which we are very pleased. Enjoy!

Dead Stars: May 6, 2014 Cameo Gallery + October 17, 2013 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Dead Stars is one of those bands for whom you naturally root. They make excellent music that lacks any posing or pretentiousness, they are superb musicians, and the trio are generally all around good guys. This is the kind of band that you want to hang out with after the show. And thankfully we’ve been able to do that twice, last October at our annual CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop and earlier this month at a show we presented at Cameo Gallery. In the interim months between these two shows, Dead Stars signed with Old Flame Records who will release their new album Slumber, due out on June 17. The recordings of these two shows feature what amounts to most of the new album in a live format. Speaking of which, Dead Stars will play the CD release show for Slumber at Union Pool on June 19. Thereafter, the band heads out on a two week tour through the East coast and Midwest.

I recorded the Cameo show with the Sennheisers mounted high in front of the soundboard and mixed with a fine feed. The Cake Shop show was recorded with the Sennheisers mounted on the low ceiling in front of the stage and again mixed with a board feed. Cameo is deeper and richer sounding, but has some boominess, while Cake Shop is very upfront but perhaps a little thinner than Cameo. Both are excellent recordings in their own right. Enjoy!

Pujol: May 23, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Pujol DBA

The last time we checked in with Pujol, it was more than two years ago at an impressive introduction to the band at the Impose SXSW show. At that point, Daniel and the band were previewing songs from the upcoming album UNITED STATES OF BEING, which was released a couple of months after SXSW. On Friday night at Death By Audio, Pujol returned to NYC to support the new album KLUDGE which was released a week ago. The album stretches the boundaries of Pujol’s punk/garage sound and adds a number of new ideas and influences. But the live set is a straightforward and energetic run through his catalog. At DBA, we heard about half the new album (“Circles” is streaming below), a democratic selection of older material, and even a few deep cuts. The takeaway from this show however is that Pujol continues to impress and given the evolution of his music we expect greater things for our next visit, which we hope doesn’t take another two years. The band’s tour continues into the Midwest and West coast throughout May and June, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a stand at the front and center of the stage and mixed it with a fine board feed mixed by Edan. The sound is superb, enjoy!

Woods: May 16, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The conventional and somewhat lazy take on the new Woods album With Light and with Love is that its a radical departure for the band — a more refined and pop-oriented record. The reality is that With Light is the natural progression of a band that’s been growing and evolving since we first saw them back in 2008. With the exit of excellent bassist (and all around good guy) Kevin Morby to pursue his solo career, Woods is now down to two original members. Original drummer Jarvis Taveniere moved to guitar several years ago and his signature is all over the new album with universally positive results. The lead guitar work on With Light has both melodic structure and experimental elements when appropriate. “Moving to the Left” begins with a wah-wah lead line that propels the song until the band opens up the song for an extended instrumental passage. Its perhaps the signature Woods song on the album, and the live version (streaming below) was equally strong. At the center of the band remains Jeremy Earl whose songwriting chops continue to grow. The album contains some truly beautiful songs and the lyrical content shows great maturity. Jeremy lives upstate, owns his own record label and runs his own festival every year — he has adult responsibilities and the music reflects that kind of wisdom. At Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, Woods returned to Manhattan for the first time since last summer and the new album clearly dominated the setlist. In fact, the band played 8 of the album’s ten tracks, three songs from the previous album (2012’s Bend Beyond), one song from 2011’s Sun and Shade and one phenomenal Pink Floyd cover (streaming below). As this show comes a few weeks into the tour, the band’s new additions (organ and bass) have become truly integrated and as a result the set was tight and well structured but left plenty of room to jam — much like all of the excellent Woods shows we’ve recorded over the years.

I recorded this set from our usual balcony spot at this venue and mixed with an excellent feed from Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Owen Pallett: May 13, 2014 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

By

[photo courtesy of Tiana Feng – full set here]

Owen Pallett‘s career is roughly analogous to his music itself — multi-layered, complex and abundantly talented. In recent years, he’s concentrated mostly on his arrangement and film score work, which culminated earlier this year in an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack of the film Her. This level of accolade will undoubtedly lead to more well-deserved opportunities for Owen. But his solo career has taken a bit of a back seat over the last four years. Owen’s last album Heartland was released in January of 2010, and his last tour was that Spring, when we experienced an outstanding show at Webster Hall (recording here). But on May 27, Owen Pallett will release his first new album in over four years In Conflict (Domino Records) and on Tuesday his current tour reached Glasslands. Owen has added a percussionist and a bass player to the live band, but as always the focus is completely on his center position where he mans the keyboard, violin and loop petals to create his own orchestra for each song. The set began with some older material before visiting some of the In Conflict songs, including the title track. Mid-set the band took a break, Owen asked for requests and played three tracks alone. The band returned for the balance of the show, a mix of old an new material. We’re streaming the night’s final song, a power version of “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt” that led to extended and vociferous applause. I left a little extra crowd noise at the end of the show for the listener to understand the enthusiasm of the fans. Owen’s tour has moved on to Europe, but we expect he will be back for Summer or Fall dates in NYC.

I recorded this set with our venue-installed Naiant cardioids mixed with an excellent soundboard feed, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Palehound: May 9, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Palehound DBA

Its pretty hard for me to believe that Palehound’s debut release Bent Nail EP was written by a college freshman and half of the current band can’t legally buy beer in New York. The band’s set at Death By Audio last Friday was also a revelation — this quartet has only been playing together for a few months having for the most part debuted at last October’s CMJ — but Palehound played with such confidence and so much in sync that they’re more of a “band” than many more experienced outfits. At the center of it all is Ellen Kempner, whose songwriting chops continue to grow. The band’s latest Kitchen 7″ opens with “Holiest”, which was part of the one-two punch that opened this show in such impressive fashion. And Palehound is continuing to write new material, as this show featured several new numbers including one that has no title as yet. Interestingly, the very animated crowd included one guy who yelled out “that’s the best song yet” after the Untitled song. Perhaps, but we are partial to “Pet Carrot”, which has evolved in a short time from an alt-folk track on the EP to a crunchy electric raver live. Its streaming below. Expect much from Palehound in the near future — its hard not to both be impressed by their maturity and to root for them. The band has several upcoming dates, including the Grrrl Fest at Silent Barn on June 14.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards on a stand at the front and center of the stage and mixed it with a board feed. The mics got jostled a little during the set and you can hear direct conversations in between songs as the band’s rabid fans were very into the show. But all that aside, the placement of the mics was perfect as the instruments are loud and clear and the vocal-heavy board blends perfectly for a superb recording. Enjoy!

Gretchen Lohse: February 26, 2014 Trans Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

May 14, 2014

The first time I heard Gretchen Lohse‘s music I was literally left breathless. Her new album Primal Rumble is a minimalist folk record that highlights her beautiful voice and honest lyrics with no pretense or affectation. We invited Gretchen to perform at Trans Pecos based solely on hearing the record — its that good. And to our delight, she accepted and rounded out a terrific bill of powerful female performers. As expected, Gretchen’s set was short on any kind of bells and whistles and long on talent and emotion. We expect that she will reach wider audiences in the not too distant future, but for her first ever solo show in NYC, we can say we were there back then.

acidjack recorded this set in the same manner as the Larkin Grimm recording, with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the ORTF wide-angle configuration at the stage lip, and a soundboard feed. Other than some volume adjustments that are evident during “Twisted Apples”, the sound quality is  outstanding. Enjoy!

Megafaun: May 2, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

megafaun-17

This was one of those nights. Megafaun aren’t exactly breaking up, but because each member of the trio has an abundant amount of other projects pulling them in all directions, this show at Baby’s All Right had the feeling that it might be the band’s last in NYC, if not forever then for a very long time. The local musical who’s-who seemed to sense the historic nature of the occasion — either that or Megafaun has a lot of important friends. In the crowd was the author Jesse Jarnow, the writer Richard Gehr, Northern Spy Records founder Adam Downey, Sharon Van Etten and every member of her band. But the most notable celeb in attendance was on stage — former bandmate and recent Grammy winner Justin Vernon joined Megafaun for this seemingly final mini-tour. The band’s set was a bit ragged-but-right, as generally speaking most Megafaun sets we’ve seen have been. This is a band known almost as much for its pure spirit as its songwriting and performing. The setlist included pretty much all of the old favorites you’d want to hear, and one excellent cover that we’re streaming below. There will be plenty of opportunities to see the individual members of Megafaun with their various projects — Brad Cook is in Sharon’s current touring band — but this might have been the last proper Megafaun show. As as a send-off, though, it was a pretty sweet show.

This set was recorded by Baby’s FOH Devin Foley with the venue’s installed multitrack system. All I did was mix it down. There was one wrinkle though, as the encore song was played off mic in the middle of the floor. For that song, I only used the two mounted room mics. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

7th birthday

It was 7 years ago today that I started NYCTaper — equal parts a lark, an experiment and a music distribution system. These many years later, we’re all fortunate that its worked out so well. So thanks to our faithful readers, followers, contributors and of course the artists. Without the artists, there is no art. So support them.

Thanks for 7 memorable years!

Our newer friends Dead Stars played our CMJ show in October, and I’m streaming a track from that show below. Whiskey Bitches very recently played our killer show at Death By Audio last month. Ghost Punch is the show’s opener and although we’ve never hosted them before, we expect they’ll become site regulars like the others.
