The Mountain Goats: October 13, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Transcendental Youth is the fourteenth proper Mountain Goats album. Its another strong record that continues the themes that the Mountain Goats often explore, misfits and tragi-comedic characters. The new album also spurred a tour, and although John Darnielle played a show as part of the Ecstatic Music Fest in March, this was the band’s first proper visit to NYC in more than a year and half, and it resulted in four sold out shows. On Saturday night at Music Hall, the Mountain Goats performed eight songs from the new album within a set of both tMG standards and a few rare nuggets. John was particularly effusive and hilarious on this night with the between-song banter, and for this tour tMG were joined for part of the set with show-opener Matthew E. White’s horn section. The result was a long and thoroughly entertaining night of music, one of the best Mountain Goats shows we’ve seen.

I recorded this show from the center balcony rail with the Sennheisers mounted fairly low. The room was mixed to perfection by tMG sound engineer Brandon, and the result is one of our best recordings from the balcony spot in this venue. Enjoy!

Thee Oh Sees: September 24, 2012 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

As I wrote in the review of Ty Segall’s set, this show was one of the most fun nights of the year. DBA has always been a venue with a kinetic energy, but on a night when two bands who these days play much larger venues came in for a special secret show, the atmosphere was electric. Thee Oh Sees are a great live band — leader John Dwyer is indefatigable, and on this night the band played an extended set. From the very outset opening with “The Dream”, the band never really came up for air as they delivered garage-rock rave ups one after another. Seemingly at the end of their show, the crowd wouldn’t let them leave the stage and Thee Oh Sees played two more songs, including an extended jam on “Destroyed Fortress” that veered back into the melody of “Dead Energy” before closing at more than ten minutes. We don’t expect to see Thee Oh Sees at a venue the size of DBA again, but this show certainly left a lasting memory.

I recorded this show in the same manner as the Ty Segall set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Ty Segall: September 24, 2012 Death By Audio – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Ty Segall played his first show ever in NYC at Death By Audio. Of course, that was several years ago and these days Ty plays much larger venues. On the Sunday before this show, Ty played a new outdoor venue to a couple of thousand fans. But in a return to his roots, Ty Segall played a surprise show on a Monday night at DBA. As if to confirm the reports that his new album Slaughterhouse is influenced more by 70’s hard rock than by the garage-rock sounds of his earlier material, Ty opened this show with a Sabbath cover (streaming below) and played four straight heavy covers. The Segall material was mixed among his large catalog, with Slaughterhouse tracks sprinkled in throughout. We’re streaming the poppier “Tell Me What’s Inside Your Heart”, and if you listen to the end, you’ll hear Ty thank DBA’s Edan, whose booking of this show as a local coup. Although packed into the small DIY venue, the crowd was very much into the show and their energy was contagious. This was one of the most fun shows we’ve seen all year.

Acidjack mounted a new pair of modest Berliner mics on the ceiling of DBA, as we expected the raucous crowd. We ran the cables across the ceiling and over the soundboard area where I also received an excellent feed. The sound quality of this recording is quite excellent. Enjoy!

When we announced the first couple of bands that are playing the NYCTaper CMJ Day Party this year, we teased/hinted at the other bands on the bill. Lightning Love, who I described as an “irresistible Michigan-based pop trio” will be opening the show. The description is partly based on the vocals of Leah Diehl, whose voice captures an earnestness and vulnerability that fits their quick and quirky pop songs perfectly. At Spike Hill a few weeks ago, Lightning Love accomplished a rarity. As an out-of-town band playing immediately after a local band with friends and family in the audience, their pop hooks quieted the chatter of the other band’s fans and turned heads. The balance of their too-short set was played to an attentive room and undoubtedly earned them some new fans, including yours truly.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on the stand in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The early chatter and mix issues were resolved after a few songs and the result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Yesterday we posted about our first CMJ show of 2012, the day party on Thursday October 18, 2012 at Cake Shop. We revealed two artists for this amazing bill, with clues about the other five acts. Today, we’re filling in another name — the inimitable Hans Chew. A little bio about Hans:
“Hans Chew’s 2010 debut album, Tennessee and Other Stories…, received four-stars from Rolling Stone Magazine who called it “fantastic… timeless…”. Uncut Magazine included the record in their Top 50 Albums of the Year and their list of the 20 Best Americana Albums, while also nominating Hans for their highest honor, The Uncut Music Award. Hans Chew is alive and kicking in New York City. He is currently working on his next record, due in 2012.”

NYCTaper at CMJ 2012: First Show Thursday October 18 — Day Party at Cake Shop

The success of a dogged pursuit can be sweet. In the case of our first 2012 CMJ lineup, its sweet several times over. As our longtime readers are aware, we’ve been fans of Hurray For The Riff Raff since 2008, but its been their recent album Look Out Mama that put it over the top. After the two outstanding concerts they played at Mercury Lounge this Summer, we pursued them heavily for CMJ. HFTRR is currently on tour in Europe, which will take them literally to the day before our show at Cake Shop on Thursday October 18. They fly from Europe over night, and land in NYC in the early afternoon of the 18th. We are sending a car service to take them directly from the airport to Cake Shop, where they’ll play the final set of our CMJ party. Quite an amazing set of circumstances, and one that we’ll not soon forget.

In another nice bit of coincidence, Hurray For The Riff Raff appeared on last night’s season premiere of Treme, HBO’s series about post-Katrina New Orleans. The band is playing outside of the coffee shop where the character Sofia works, and Sofia’s new boyfriend sings with the band. We hope HFTRR will be making regular appearances this season on Treme.

Another one of our dogged pursuits for CMJ was Mount Moriah. Last Fall, they played a set at Bowery Ballroom that was both impressive and moving. I’ve burned my recording of that performance to CD and play it in my vehicle more than literally any other CD that I own. The music is now burned into my brain. When we invited the band to play our CMJ show, it was admittedly a bit of a long shot. Mount Moriah is from North Carolina and have played multiple US tours. There was another fact in their development we did not know at the time — they’ve signed to Merge Records. But in another beautiful bit of synchronicty, Merge Records is hosting their first CMJ show since 2008 on Thursday night at Mercury Lounge, and Mount Moriah is on the bill. Shortly after the announcement of their Merge gig, the band agreed to play our show, and we could not be more excited.

Holly Miranda: September 12, 2012 Zebulon – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It was two years ago when Holly Miranda spent her last night in NYC before moving to Los Angeles performing for an intimate crowd at the wonderful Vivo in Vino. That show was one of our favorites of the year and such an incredible memorable night — great music, great company, superb wine and a rooftop afterparty to remember. That year of 2010 was a banner one for Holly. Her album The Magician’s Private Library was one of the best of the year and her tour was a triumphant celebration of the album. The Bowery show in particular was another highlight of 2010. But in the last two years, Holly has lived a fairly quiet domestic life while working on her new album through a Pledge Music campaign that has shown the dedication of her fans — the pledge has reached over 200% of the original target. The relaxed pace of the production of the new album has also given the artist an opportunity to share demos, covers, and some obscure nuggets on her Soundcloud page, which has become a must-visit page. On Wednesday, Holly Miranda made a very rare visit to NYC to play a fairly under-publicized show at the intimate Zebulon. I had already committed to recording a show at 285 Kent that night, but left in between sets and brought over my small mobile rig to capture Holly’s set. Fortunately, the timing all worked out perfectly. Holly took the stage with Tim Mislock, a new drummer and saxophonist. With an opener of “Waves”, the two years melted away and it was as if Holly hadn’t left. The following number, her moving Etta James cover was an added gift. The balance of the too-short set consisted of new songs and a couple of covers. The Morphine song “Mary Won’t You Call My Name?” was a raver that got the boisterous crowd to move in unison, and we’re streaming it below. Holly has no current plans to play NYC, but rest assured when she ultimately returns, we’ll be there.

I recorded this set with the DPA 4061 small omnis with the mics attached to a mount in the ceiling of the venue about fifteen feet from the stage. The venue was packed and the crowd was rather chatty, so that this isn’t exactly the best thing we’ve had on the site lately. But its certainly listenable and full of energy. Enjoy!

Ben Sollee: September 8, 2012 Backyard Brunch Sessions – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Backyard Brunch Sessions is in its third year of summer events and it continues to draw an incredible roster of performers to a very intimate and unique setting. Last weekend, Ben Sollee played a BBS that was brought indoors because of inclement weather. But the experience remained the same — an opportunity for a small selected group of people to experience an abundant amount of talent from up close. For us, very close. Ben Sollee is one of those performers whose rare combination of stage presence, likeability and sheer talent is magnetic. He is also a natural for the setting of BBS, and on Saturday Ben was fast friends with everyone in the room and effortlessly brought us all into the world of his music. As a duo with percussionist Jordon Ellis, who literally played a customized wooden box as a drum, Ben dipped into some older numbers but mostly focused on material from his new album Half Made Man, which will be released on September 25. Ben opened with “DIY” and ended the first set with “Unfinished”, two of the stronger tracks from the new album. We are streaming “Hurting” from Ben’s 2011 album Inclusions, as it was personally one of my favorite performances from this set and also features some incredible vocalizing at the conclusion of the song. Ben Sollee will be touring (via bicycle!) this month through the South and Midwest, dates [here].

I recorded this set with four microphones placed strategically around the performers. The Neumann hypercards were used primarily for vocals and the Sennheiser cards for instruments. A light amount of reverb was added in post to the vocals and the mixdown is weighted towards the vocals by about 60/40. The quiet room and hushed crowd provided a near perfect recording atmosphere so that this recording is really quite superb. Enjoy!

Daniel Johnston Live Release to benefit Brett Hartenbach Cancer Recovery

Teenarena Records has launched a limited edition 10″ vinyl/cassette “Daniel Johnston Live” release to benefit Brett Hartenbach, Daniel’s long time touring guitarist/friend. Brett has recently been diagnosed with a grade III brain tumor and is fighting the tumor uninsured. All proceeds from this release will go directly towards assisting Brett in his recovery. This show was recorded direct to 1/4? stereo two track tape on May 12, 2012.

Hurray For The Riff Raff: August 26, 2012 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’m thinking a lot about New Orleans right now. Hurricane Isaac has landed just west of the City on literally the 7th anniversary of Katrina. As New Orleans braces for the worst and all of us hope that the pumps and levees hold in their first major test, its comforting to listen to one of the best young bands the city has to offer. Hurray For The Riff Raff are surging on the momentum of their new album (Look Out Mama), a string of superb shows and some pretty heady media attention. On Sunday, the band returned to Mercury Lounge as the headliner and very impressively packed the joint on a Sunday night late show in late August. While they’ve always impressed us, going all the way back to 2008, its fair to say that HFTRR has never been better. Alynda is singing with strength and confidence and the musicians are incredibly tight. The set was heavy on Mama material but also featured four new songs, a couple of older numbers, and some really neat covers. We are streaming the Jimmie Dale Gilmore (via Flatlanders) classic “Dallas” which not only cemented the band’s alt-country bona fides but also featured vocals with Alynda showing great range and passion. With our thoughts and hopes for the safety of New Orleans on this night, we’re also streaming Hurray For The Riff Raff’s tribute to the city, “St. Roch Blues”. HFTRR will return to do more shows in Europe this Fall before returning to NYC for a special show in mid-October. More details to follow on the NYC date!

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards positioned in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed. The large crowd on this night was extremely into the band and there’s almost no chatter that isn’t part of the show. We mixed the mics and the board at 50/50 leading to a really nice room feel to an otherwise outstanding recording. Enjoy!
