Union Street Preservation Society: July 13, 2012 Highline Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

July 17, 2012
By

One doesn’t necessarily think first of Brooklyn New York when considering hotbeds for bluegrass music. But the Union Street Preservation Society have been practicing their craft locally and their hard work has paid off. On Friday night, the band was selected to open for the nationally prominent Greensky Bluegrass at Highline Ballroom. USPS took the opportunity of a high profile gig and ran with it. Their forty minute set was a tight and entertaining run through their repertoire of rootsy folk and bluegrass and featured proficient playing and stagecraft. We’re streaming the old folk number “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad”, perhaps most famously performed by the Grateful Dead, but a song that has roots as deep as the music that inspires USPS.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Greensky set, but this recording as a slight buzz/hum caused perhaps by an instrument on stage. With the caveat, enjoy what is otherwise and excellent capture.

This Recording is now available to Stream and Download in FLAC and MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].

Blitzen Trapper: July 14, 2012 Stuyvesant Town Oval – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

July 16, 2012
By

There are certain types of music and certain bands that fit perfectly when you’re sitting on the grass on a beautiful sunny day. On Saturday at Stuyvesant Town, Blitzen Trapper performed “Live From The Oval”, and although the booking of these concerts has been weird over the years (Jay Reatard, High Places), on this weekend they got it right. After an energetic and entertaining set from Ben Kweller (recording coming soon), Blitzen Trapper took the stage and for the next seventy minutes, the Oval was a relaxed perfect mix of sun, green grass, happy neighbors, and folk/roots rock. While the set did contain a couple of treats — first album deep cut “Texaco” and their new Record Store Day 7″ cover of “Hey Joe” — the attraction of this show was the sheer enjoyment of the right music at the right place and time. It was a smell the roses moment, and it was over far too soon.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040s mounted on a 15 foot stand about 30 feet back from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed provided by BT’s talented FOH Martin. The mix accentuates the audience microphones since the recording truly captures the feel on the grass that day. I’m extremely pleased with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

We are still offering a superb recording of Blitzen Trapper at Maxwell’s in December [here].

Greensky Bluegrass: July 13, 2012 Highline Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Bluegrass is a musical genre that unfortunately gets short shrift at nyctaper. And it shouldn’t be that way. One of my favorite concerts of all time was a memorable collaboration between Steve Earle and the Del McCoury band at Town Hall in 1998, and I can also say that I saw the legendary Bill Monroe in concert at Damrosch Park in 1990. So in an effort to rectify that shortcoming, on Friday I made it to Highline Ballroom for a bluegrass double bill including one of the foremost “newgrass” bands Greensky Bluegrass, and local up and comers The Union Street Preservation Society (recording coming soon). Greensky is a quintet that’s been around for a dozen years and has accumulated a strong national following. On Friday night, they brought the goods — a two-set two-plus hour show that consisted of a healthy dose of original material, some traditional bluegrass numbers, and a series of eclectic rock covers all performed with stunning proficiency and with an authentic reperatory feel. We’re streaming “I’m Working on a Building”, an old negro spiritual made most famous by The Carter Family but also performed often by the aforementioned Mr. Monroe. Of the covers (Prince, Springsteen), the Talking Heads cover that was featured as the penultimate song of the night is also streaming below. At the end of the evening it was clear that if Greensky is the mantle carrier for the current generation of blue/newgrass music, then the genre is in very good hands indeed.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones set up directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed. The mics picked up quite a bit of chatter during the first set, which relies more on the board feed, while the second set is heavier towards the mics. The sound quality on both is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Wooden Shjips: June 24, 2012 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

At this point in their career, Wooden Shjips have become a must-see concert for me. The quartet never fails to deliver a powerful and intense performance of their dense psychedelic rock. At Knitting Factory on Sunday night, the Shjips worked through a set similar to their previous NYC show at Music Hall last Fall, but the more intimate venue offered the opportunity to experience the show up close. While guitarist/vocalist Ripley Johnson is the obvious focal point, we were just as entranced by the rhythm section and their ability to rattle my ribcage with deep bottom end, and Nash’s authentic 60’s garage-style organ. The whole of the Shjips stage performance is a spectacle that is gratifying to experience, and we left Sunday night’s show hoping they will return to NYC soon. Wooden Shjips will spend much of July on tour in Europe.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 cards mixed with a superb soundboard feed and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: June 15, 2012 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

June 18, 2012

[photo courtesy of Tilebreaker – full set here]

Its been a couple of years since we last saw New Orleans’ Hurray For The Riff Raff. While band leader Alynda Lee was born in the raised in the Bronx, over the last three years the band has not come north enough for us to get a chance to see them. In the interim, they released a couple of albums and made an appearance on HBO’s award winning show Tremé. But nearly three years to the day since HFTRR played a show we produced at Monster Island, they triumphantly returned to NYC in support of the band’s brilliant new album Look Out Mama. The show at Mercury Lounge on Friday night was tight, energetic and driven. Hurray For The Riff Raff is a more mature and confident band and the music has evolved — Alynda’s americana’s influences have been fleshed out and we can now hear everything from dixieland to surf rock. At Mercury, the band worked through a setlist that included some of the new album (we’re streaming “What’s Wrong With Me”), but also three new or unreleased songs, and a superb cover of “Time Is On My Side”, that veered more towards the Irma Thomas version and less to the Stones. “Time” also featured Alynda’s vocals chops and the band’s ability to let loose and have some rip roaring fun. Hurray For The Riff Raff have finished their current tour, but will return to the road for a tour of the UK later this Summer.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand at the front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Glen Hansard: March 15, 2012 Hotel Vegan at SXSW – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Glen Hansard played Housing Works last night, plays Beacon Theatre later this month, and he will release his first solo album Rhythm and Repose tomorrow. So we figured it would be a good time to post this short solo set that Glen played at Hotel Vegan’s Thursday daytime show at SXSW in March. At just four songs its a bit of a tease, but interestingly the set represents each of period of his career. He opened with show with a song perhaps from Glen’s busking days in Dublin, the Irish traditional number “Spencer the Rover”. The balance of the show consisted of one each of a song from his upcoming solo album (“Love Don’t Keep Me Waiting”), a Frames song (“What Happens When The Heart Just Stops”, streaming below), and a song from The Swell Season. This sampler set is a good preview for the Beacon show, for which tickets are still available.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the other Hotel Vegan shows, with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 Cardioids mixed with a well balanced board feed. Other than some minor ambient noise from the outside tent location, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dandy Warhols: June 5, 2012 Irving Plaza – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

June 7, 2012
By

In their nearly two decades as a band, The Dandy Warhols have done just about everything that musicians can do, in and outside of the music world. What continues to be refreshing about this band is there’s no “coast” in their vocabulary. Last month the Dandy Warhols released their eight studio album This Machine, which while it flew under the radar of most of the fad of the month publications, nevertheless continued to solidify the band’s catalog. When Pitchfork accused the Dandy Warhols of “going through the motions” we hoped that it was a knee-jerk reaction to a new album of a band nearing their second decade and from a publication known for mailing in agenda-fueled reviews. The album’s tour came to NYC this week and we caught the Irving Plaza show with a bit of trepidation. We expected that a band on autopilot would have performed an hour set with a few new songs mixed into the main set and the classics to close the show. Fortunately, the Dandy Warhols were just getting started at the hour point — a couple of band members actually took a bathroom break. Instead the band plowed through twenty-two songs that covered material from every single one of their albums. We are streaming the much-requested “Lou Weed” from their debut album. When the show ended with an extended version of “Boys Better”, the Dandy Warhols had played for two hours and barely came up for air. If this epic Irving Plaza show proved anything, its that Pitchfork is going through the motions and were both cynical and lazy in their assessment. The Dandy Warhols are as vital as ever.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig on the floor of the venue in front of the balcony overhang with the microphone stand up to 15 feet to avoid the floor chatter. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: May 12, 2012 NYCTaper Anniversary Show at 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

June 4, 2012
By

[photo by Jill Harrison from For The Love of Brooklyn blog]

These first five years of NYCTaper have been as unpredictable as they have been profoundly enjoyable. The very act of capturing live music can be exhilarating, but when taping becomes part of an entire subculture that introduces you to new and exciting acts on a regular basis, and allows you to access the act of live musical creation of a band like Oneida, there are really no words to describe the experience. We asked Oneida to play and to curate our 5th Anniversary show and were overjoyed when they accepted. The band has been an important part of NYCTaper over these five years. We’ve recorded them in their own studio for a day’s worth of jams, we recorded them in the old Knitting Factory and the new Knitting Factory, I woke up pre-dawn to record them as the sun rose over the East River in Brooklyn, we’ve captured three of their CD release events. Its been a great ride, and a couple of Saturdays back at 285 Kent, the amazing journey continued. Oneida invited James McNew and Greg Fox to join them on stage for the set. The band then launched into an eighty minute set of entirely new material, and completed the show with another exercise in Oneida boundary-breaking. We are streaming “Bad Habit”, a song that begins in the style similar to Oneida’s “kraut-rock” material, but which detoured into a lengthy noise-rock jam. The final song is called “Reputation” and it was an obvious highlight, as it transpired over an astounding forty-eight minutes as the double-drum attack led the charge through a trip of musical peaks and valleys with a few pit stops in between. As an analog to our amazing first five years of existence, we could not have asked for a more appropriate set closer.

Acidjack and I recorded this set in a manner we had not previously accomplished. I took four discreet tracks from the board into my R-44, while acidjack recorded four channels of audience microphones — the Schoeps mounted center and above the stage, and the Sennheiser cards mounted on a beam 10 feet from the PA into his R-44. The eight channels were synced live. All the tracks were mixed in Soundforge fairly equally in post-production. The result is a professional quality multitrack recording with superb quality. Enjoy!

Natureboy: April 5, 2012 Brain Cave Festival at Bell House – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

May 30, 2012

[photo by Eric Groom courtesy of Impose Magazine]

Less than a week after Kevchino and NYCTaper presented Natureboy at Union Pool (here), the band also appeared at the excellent Brain Cave Festival. Natureboy’s set at the Bell House that Saturday was one my own personal highlights of the day. The group recently added two new members, who seem to continue to work well with Sara and Cedar. Sara is more confident performing the new material live, and the result was a powerful set that caught the attention of much of the crowd, which began to fill as the day evolved. We did not post this set back in April since we had just posted the Union Pool set, but given the new developments for Natureboy, now is the time. Last week, the band did a brief tour of the Midwest that included a recording session with Daytrotter. Tomorrow night, Natureboy returns to NYC for a show at The Paperbox in Brooklyn (more info here). But the most exciting recent announcement was the residency that Natureboy will play at Pianos. The band plays four consecutive Thursdays beginning on June 7, and the residency includes a healthy dose of special guests. We will certainly be there.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the El Jezel Brain Cave set previously posted and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

MMOSS: May 5, 2012 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

May 20, 2012

[photo by Terri Nguyen courtesy of Impose Magazine]

One doesn’t normally think of Dover New Hampshire as a home for neo-psychedelic rock, but MMOSS is the latest of outstanding purveyor of this genre and they call the “Live Free or Die” state home. When Woods invites a band to tour with them, as they did with MMOSS for a month this Spring, its a pretty good clue to us that the band will be a quality outfit. At 285 Kent a couple of weeks back, it was obvious that MMOSS was the real deal. Our first impression, with the two guitarists flanking a female vocalist/flutist, was their resemblance to the excellent Bardo Pond. And this comparison isn’t far off, in terms of the live sound. But MMOSS’s album, the superb i, is a collection of psych-garage nuggets. At 285, the band’s set featured a couple of shorter songs, but MMOSS did stretch it out for a couple of numbers before the too-short set ended with an extended jam. We are streaming “Kitty Sorrow”, a standout track from the album performed to perfection.

I recorded this set in the same manner as those of Woods and Crystal Stilts and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
