Imperial Teen: August 17, 2012 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

August 24, 2012
By

Imperial Teen have achieved something quite rare in pop music — the release of what is arguably their best album deep into the band’s existence. Its been fifteen years since the quartet formed from members of various other San Francisco bands. Their popularity reached its high-water mark with the 1998 single “Yoo Hoo” (streaming below), a song that received significant airplay and was featured in the black comedy classic Jawbreaker. Five years removed from their last album, and seemingly out of nowhere comes Feel the Sound (Merge), a brilliant pop album rich in melody and sweet boy-girl harmonies. “Runaway” (also streaming below) is the lead track on the album, and at Friday night’s show at Knitting Factory it was elevated to set-closing status. The song is chock-full of earworm melodies and is an early candidate for song of the year. At the Knit show, Imperial Teen worked through a nice run of the highlights of their catalog and mixed in half of Feel The Sound in an hour long set to a demographically mixed but faithful crowd. The band was called back for three encores and they seemed geniunely touched by the fervent support. The Knitting Factory show was Imperial Teen’s only Northeast performance on this tour, but I would expect their return over the next few months.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards at the front left corner of the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent board feed provided by the Knit’s head sound tech Rob. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Pujol: March 15, 2012 SXSW at Longbranch Inn Impose Party – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Pujol announced today a show in NYC on October 11, 2012 at Mercury Lounge. We were fortunate to have captured a live performance of Pujol at SXSW in March, at the Impose Magazine party “Imposition” at the Longbranch Inn. Pujol is the recording project of Daniel Pujol from Nashville TN, and at SXSW the live band was a trio. Their set at Imposition was one of the most impressive of the bands that I had not previously seen. This was unselfconscious power punk with fine musicianship but which didn’t take itself too seriously. In the interim, Pujol has released their first proper album UNITED STATES OF BEING (Saddle Creek Records), and this set featured four numbers from the new record among a set of seven songs. We’re streaming “KEEPER Of ATLANTIS”, an older song that opened the set with a bang.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040s set up at the rear of the room and mixed with a board feed. Other than the mumble of crowd chatter apparent in between songs, this is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

The War On Drugs: July 21, 2012 Mulcahy’s Wantagh NY – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Shine A Light Music Festival took place a few weeks back, and we’ve already posted the Luna reunion (here). As our regular readers are aware, The War On Drugs is one of my favorite current bands. The addition of this set to the site is by no means an afterthought, but the result of a discovery. Due to technical problems, I had written this recording off as a non-post, but after a re-listen and re-evaluation this week, the sound quality is far above what I expected. The show was also something special. The War On Drugs arrived early at the gig and had already soundchecked by the time I got there and set up. The band was interacting and mingling with all of the members of the Tommy Brull Foundation for several hours before their set, so that by the time they took the stage The War On Drugs felt like they were playing to friends. The show contained a nice mix of their material, but also some entertaining banter, a “guest” guitarist, and even some gentle ribbing of nyctaper.

I recorded this show with the Sennheiser 8040’s on-stage and running through the snake and mixed with a board feed. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the phantom power of the mics, so this set is the straight board feed. Its not optimal for sound quality, but its certainly a good listen. Enjoy!

Port St. Willow: July 30, 2012 Glasslands – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Port St. Willow is Nick Principe’s solo project and this past year he returned to the East coast from Portland after having grown up in the New York area. He is a childhood friend and early collaborator with Peter Silbermann from The Antlers, and while there are similarities in the music of the two bands, there are also very divergent styles between the two old friends. Last Monday at Glasslands, Port St. Willow opened the secret Glasslands show. Their set was relatively short and consisted of six of the eleven songs from the May 2012 self-release Holiday. The album is a remarkable collection of atmospheric mood pieces, but live with the addition of a drummer the songs take on an immediate feel. At Glasslands, the duo took time to develop each song with a gentle lead-in evolving ultimately into a full-on symphonic crescendo. Port St. Willow is poised to move to the next level — it would hardly be surprising if an established indie label picked up Holiday for wider release. And given the talent for songcraft and live performance, we expect that this band will be a regular on NYCTaper for years to come.

I recorded this show in the same manner as the Antlers set, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Lee Ranaldo: July 28, 2012 Brewery Ommegang – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

August 5, 2012
By

The embarrassment of riches that was our trip to Cooperstown was further enhanced by the quality of the support band, someone quite familiar to NYCTaper, Lee Ranaldo. Back in December, we recorded a couple of the earliest performances of Lee’s new band (Glasslands and Maxwells), but since he’s literally been touring the world since then, we had not seen Lee since those early shows. At Ommegang, his set began while the sun was still shining, and the forty-five minute set of material from Lee’s excellent new album Between the Times and the Tides seemed to fit the scene perfectly. Of course, the abundant availability of Belgian ales didn’t detract from the enjoyment, but this was still a special set. Lee’s band was joined for a couple of songs by Wilco’s keyboardist Pat Sansone, and for almost the entire set by Nels Cline. This intense version of “Xtina As I Knew Her” was supplemented by Nels’ signature guitar style, and we are streaming it below. Lee Ranaldo will return to NYC from the just-completed Wilco tour for a performance at ATP on Pier 36, on September 21.

Of the six NYCTaper rigs running for this set, we chose to mix my Sennheiser 8040 Cardioids with Acidjack’s AKG C 414’s in the omni setting. The mix gives a nice clear signal while also capturing the full soundstage and that “outdoor feel”. While our distance from the sound source (90 feet) was not optimal, this recording nevertheless provides a true “you were there” experience. Enjoy!

The Antlers: July 30, 2012 Glasslands Gallery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

August 1, 2012
By

[photo courtesy of Chad from The Artistree.fm – full set here]

The Antlers “secret” show at Glasslands Gallery on Monday was announced in the morning and sold out within a few minutes. For a band that sold out the 1200-capacity Webster Hall the last time they played New York, The Antlers took the opportunity of this small surprise gig to play for an extremely worthwhile charitable effort. Charitywater.org is an organization that provides safe and clean drinking water to developing nations, and this concert raised more than $4000 for the cause. The Antlers also treated the crowd to a run-through their brand new four-song EP Undersea (Anti Records). The EP represents the continued maturity in the songwriting talents of this superb band, as each of the four tracks are less lyrically driven and more intense sonic atmospheric pieces. That’s not to say that Peter Silberman’s voice doesn’t soar at several points during the EP, but this is a band that has taken the studio like a fish to water and the results are astounding. At Glasslands, the EP was performed straight through and the live setting offered some challenges, but the band was prepared and the songs flowed naturally. We are streaming “Crest” from the EP. The balance of the set consisted of selected tracks from Hospice and Burst Apart, songs that continue to mature and develop as live performances. After a profound “Dog To Sleep”, the band returned for two encores the final of which was a brilliant “Wake”, which we are also streaming below. The Antlers will be on tour for the next several months, but return to NYC for a gig at the newly arrived ATP Festival on September 22.

I recorded this set utilizing our installed recording rig at Glasslands, the Studio Projects LSD2 mics and an excellent board feed. The sound quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Wilco: July 25, 2012 Terminal 5 – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

July 27, 2012
By

A few hours after this post appears on the site, the entire NYCTaper crew will drive four hours up to Cooperstown to see Wilco again at the Ommegang Brewery. The reason why we will travel so far is essentially encapsulated in this recording. On Wednesday, we all saw Wilco at Terminal 5, and the band once again reminded us about why we’ll make sacrifices as fans to see them live. The meme of all the Wilco reviews on nyctaper (and there are a lot) is that this band is extremely good to its fans. The long sets, interesting song selections, lengthy encores and full dedication to the performance positions Wilco as the preeminent live band around today, and for the better part of the last two decades. On Wednesday, we were treated to a “deep cut” setlist where songs were performed that we haven’t seen very often or at all since the 1990s. “What’s The World Got in Store” is probably the rarest of the tracks — a song from the first record of the two-lp 1996 album Being There. We are streaming it below, along with “Passenger Side”, another early era nugget that has seen infrequent plays in recent years. The final treat was a heartfelt final encore (the 9th encore song) of “The Lonely 1”, another Being There song and one that I’m not sure that I’ve ever actually seen live. Its these kinds of treats that keep us coming back. I’m sure Cooperstown will yield the same kind of satisfaction.

I recorded this set along side the rest of the crew. For this recording, I’m using the Neumann and Sennheiser 4-mic rig and relying heavily on the hypercard Neumanns. I’ve also patched acidjack’s Schoeps recording for the first track since I experienced some technical issues during the first song. Overall it an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Dean & Britta (with Luna reunion!): July 21, 2012 Mulcahy’s Wantagh NY – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

July 26, 2012
By

The amazing story of how this Dean & Britta / Luna reunion concert at the Tommy Brull Foundation Benefit came to fruition is a tale that bears repeating many times over. Tommy Brull was a huge Luna fan, and as his brother Martin relates in the introduction to this recording, many of the memories of his friends and family have of Tommy revolve around seeing or listening to the music of Luna. After several unsuccessful attempts to persuade Dean and Britta to perform at previous Benefits, fate intervened. This Winter, Martin answered an ad for a guitar for sale on craigslist and was shocked to find that the seller was none other than Dean Wareham. When Martin sampled the guitar by playing some of Luna’s “Tiger Lily”, a connection was made. And when Dean learned the details of the life of Tommy Brull and the mission of the Foundation, Dean and Britta agreed to play this year’s Shine A Light Festival. For the show, Sean Eden also agreed to play, and the Luna reunion was set. On Saturday night in Wantagh, I arrived in time to witness some of the Luna soundcheck. It seemed like no time had passed since the last incarnation of the band said farewell with a series of shows at Bowery Ballroom. With Dean, Sean and Britta out front and joined by Dean and Britta drummer Anthony LaMarca, this was as close to a full-fledged Luna reunion as we are likely to ever see — and it was one night only. The set began with two Galaxie 500 songs and a stunning cover of Nico’s (penned by Dylan) “I’ll Keep It With Mine” that we are streaming below. After a brief introduction, Sean joined the band on stage and the balance of the set contained seven Luna songs and two more Galaxie 500 songs that Luna performed often. The guitar interplay between Dean and Sean was spot on, and the rhythm section was flawless. In tribute to Martin and fate’s intervention, we are streaming “Tiger Lily” with the faith that Tommy Brull is smiling, knowing that more than a decade since his passing, he can still make amazing things happen.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040’s on stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. A problem with the phantom powering of the Sennheiser’s led to a minimal signal from the on-stage feed, and I relied heavily (75%) on the board feed for the mix. The feed is quite heavily on kick drums but after quite a bit of editing, I was able to produce an excellent listening recording. With those caveats, enjoy!

We ask that if you download this recording, you’ll also contribute to the Tommy Brull Foundation. The Shine A Light Festival was held to raise money for Camp Anchor, a camp in Long Beach that assists disabled children.

Ben Kweller: July 14, 2012 Stuyvesant Town Oval – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Ben Kweller has been in the spotlight for virtually his entire life so its no surprise that at the ripe age of 30, he is one of the most confident and comfortable performers you’ll encounter. At Stuyvesant Oval on Saturday, Ben played a tight hour-long set to a still-arriving crowd and entertained from start to finish. Kweller’s new album Go Fly a Kite is his first record in three years and the quality songcraft evinces maturity while still delivering Ben’s genial and playful side. In the Oval, the set consisted of six of the new songs sprinkled in with a nice overview of his catalog. While he currently lives in Austin, Ben did reminisce about his younger days in Brooklyn and the album that came from that period, 2006’s Ben Kweller — and the set featured three songs from that album including a specific request for “I Gotta Move”. We’re streaming “Jealous Girl”, one of the stronger tracks from the new album and a song destined to be a Kweller classic.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Blitzen Trapper set and the sound quality is equally superb, with the caveat that there is some crackling in the keyboards (a technical issue on stage) that can be heard during the points where the keys are played louder. With that, enjoy!
