Phish: July 29, 2017 – Madison Square Garden

While EricPH took less than twenty-four hours to post his recording of this show, I’ve taken way too long to make mine available and as a result I’m doing a new post and using the opportunity to gather some thoughts about these shows.

Its pretty amazing watching musical history in the making — as it happens. Now that the “Baker’s Dozen” Phish run at Madison Square Garden is more than halfway done, it has become apparent that this isn’t just a big run of shows at one venue but an event never quite seen before in musical history. The band has dedicated to making sure that no song is repeated during the entire run, created themes for each night, and playing against all of the expectations that come with a band that’s existed for longer than some of its fans have been alive. The first sets aren’t just single song play-throughs, the shorter songs can now be jam vehicles, and there’s no predictable place for a song in the setlist. Add to that a bunch of break-outs, rare numbers and first-time covers, and Phish has pretty much committed themselves to “Baker’s Dozen” perhaps becoming the bell-weather upon which to measure their lengthy career. And as this Uproxx article from earlier today notes, Phish has created a model for fan-friendly artist presentation that most bands with significant fan-bases should follow.

This Saturday night show had some serious highlights as noted by Eric’s review. There was the surprise first set closer of “Walrus”, the twenty-three minute second set opener “Blaze On” that might be the best version of that song the band has ever played, and the set closing Hood. I’ve also always been partial to the band’s goofy anthem “Meatstick” and this version was a hoot. Overall, it was just another prime show in a classic run and we’re lucky to be capturing two more of these nights this coming weekend. Stay tuned.

I recorded this in the exact same place and manner as the July 22 recording (first row taper’s section with cards) and the sound is equally excellent. Enjoy!

The sixth night of Phish’sBaker’s Dozen” shows at Madison Square Garden was thematically the “double chocolate” donut show. This presented some challenges for song selection as Phish’s vast catalog does not contain a song with the word “chocolate” in its title. But ultimately, in a run of never-ending surprises and first-time covers, Phish chose to open with the 2007 novelty one-hit wonder “Chocolate Rain” by Tay Zonday. The balance of the first set was comprised of fairly short dips through some obscure numbers (“Destiny Unbound”) and the classic material (“Divided Sky”), with the set-closing “Sand” perhaps the highlight of the eleven-song set.

The second set began with another acapella number (The Might Diamonds’ “Have Mercy”) before Phish launched into the first serious jam of the night—a tremendous “Chalkdust Torture.” The chocolate theme appeared again with a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing” with Mike on vocals. The second chance to jam was the segues between “Mercury,” “Sexy Thing Reprise” and an extended “Backwards” that ended the set in fine fashion. The encore segment closed with another acapella number, this time an inventive and entertaining version of Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”

Eric PH recorded this set with the AKG CK61’s mounted in the official taper’s section, while acidjack recorded with Schoeps MK4V on the same stand. The sound quality of both is excellent. Enjoy!

Waxahatchee: July 15, 2017 Warsaw BK

July 25, 2017

[photos by Joe Saturday – courtesy of We All Want Someone blog]

Last September, Katie and Allison Crutchfield’s first major band PS Eliot reunited for a brief tour and the results were quite impressive. The show we captured at Market Hotel was one of the best nights of last year. Ten months later, Katie’s main band Waxahatchee has released its latest album and it appears that last year’s return to the earlier emo/punk of her career influenced the sound of the new album. Out In the Storm (Merge Records) was produced by the great John Agnello whose credits include Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth, and it comes as no surprise that this is the most guitar-centric Waxahatchee album. That being said, its also undoubtedly the best sounding album in the band’s catalog and the song-writing fits perfectly with the production. The record chronicles the inner conflict of a person going through a difficult break-up and the anger and aggression and the power production matches perfectly.

Waxahatchee is currently on tour and the Brooklyn show was advertised as an album release show. Katie and Allison are originally from Alabama and currently live in Philadelphia, but each have great affection for Brooklyn. And as became obvious at this sold out Warsaw show, the borough loves them too. This was the largest show in the band’s history and they certainly rose to the occasion. With a crack band behind them, the sisters played a powerful set of material from the the last three albums mixed pretty evenly, but it was the newer tracks that brought the energy. If music is the universal emotional healing elixir, then whatever damage was suffered by the protagonist of Out In The Storm should have been thoroughly exorcised by the close of this outstanding show.

Waxahatchee is on an extensive world tour that last through November. Their many dates on posted on their Facebook page [here].

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypercardioids mixed with and board feed, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Phish’s “Baker’s Dozen” at Madison Square Garden is an ambitious concert series that promises an unmatched level of musicianship and inventiveness never before seen in the history of the City’s “Most Famous Arena”. We’ve attended many shows at this formidable arena over the years, but never a series that offered such unique treats. The “Bakers” part of the equation has been taken quite seriously — we were met at the gates of the venue by the gift of a strawberry donut for Saturday night’s show. And this was no coincidence. The theme for this night’s show appeared immediately as Phish’s never-before cover of the Beatles “Strawberry Fields Forever” opened the night.

The first set for Saturday followed another development evident throughout the band’s Summer tour — first sets have become serious jam vehicles no longer relegated to straight song play-throughs. And on this night we were treated to an extended “Moma Dance” and a Page McConnell solo piece to complete the “Squirming Coil” set closer that portended unique events to come. The second set began with a lengthy “Down With Disease” which led into the night’s second major surprise — a cover of the thematically appropriate Brothers Johnson’s “Strawberry Letter 23”. This late-70s psychedelic funk piece offered a perfect vehicle for Phish to exercise its chops. The remainder of the second set followed the pattern for the evening as the band played extended versions of crowd favorites. The encore segment struck home in particular as Phish played a local favorite — The Talking Heads classic “Cities”, among a series of inventive covers. We were met upon the exit of the venue with a downpour of rain that perhaps dampened the night temporarily but given our advantageous taper’s section spot, wasn’t a killjoy for very long. This is uploaded as fast as I can these days, and I hope you enjoy a primo recording of a first-rate Phish show, with many more to come.

We will be attending at least four more Phish shows during this run. Stay tuned.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at twelve feet in the first row of the Taper’s Section. The band’s sound crew did a terrific job in this arena and sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 23, 2017 Solid Sound Festival (complete Being There and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)

June 27, 2017
By

[photos by Robert Loerzel from Underground Bee]

Being There was released in October of 1996 and I saw Wilco live for the first time a month later at Mercury Lounge for a show that would change the course of my musical life. Like many of the attendees of this year’s Solid Sound Festival, I’ve seen Wilco probably more than fifty times in a variety of locations. I’ve seen multiple shows supporting all of the albums of their career, I’ve seen acoustic sets, many guest appearances, the all-covers set. I’ve seen them play in small halls, big halls, theatres, baseball stadiums, a brewery, festivals, and even at Madison Square Garden. But the seminal event of seeing and hearing the band close-up play brand new Being There songs was an experience that took me down this path and permanently affixed those songs to my psyche.

Twenty-something years later, Wilco delivered on the now-traditional (2013-all covers, 2015-all acoustic) Solid Sound Friday request set by playing the album straight-through. It says something about the staying power of the material that almost all of these songs are either still set staples or occasional plays for the band’s “regular” shows. But hearing the material in sequence brings me back to the cramped confines of Mercury on that chilly November night and reminds me why I still go to such lengths to see Wilco. But oh, if the Being There performance was all you expected from Friday night’s set, the “encore” segment was a huge Wilco curveball. Upon returning to the stage, the band jumped into “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, a not uncommon encore song. And then kept playing — the entire Yankee Hotel Foxtrot also in its entirety. Its took the opening notes of rarely played “Radio Cure” for our correspondent Gr8fulPete to recognize what was happening, but when it dawned on the crowd you can hear the shock and utter surprise of those witnessing this encore set for the ages.

Pete also recorded Saturday night’s set and the Sunday Tweedy & Friends set and those will be coming to the site in the coming days.

Pete recorded this show with his high end Neumann cards from directly at the soundboard cage area and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Man Forever: June 14, 2017 Brooklyn Music School

June 26, 2017

Its not news to our readers that Kid Millions is one of this site’s favorite musicians, both as a member of site-regulars Oneida and as a solo artist under the moniker of Man Forever. We’ve chronicled Man Forever from their days as a team of drummers, through the addition of accompanying musicians, to its present incarnation. For the latest album, Kid compiled a roster of prime musicians and created a work of great imagination and invention that truly transports Man Forever to it ultimate fruition. Play What They Want (Thrill Jockey) is more than just a collection of Kid’s friends — Laurie Anderson, Yo La Tengo, and Mary Lattimore included — its a realization of a career of the scene’s ultimate percussionist as composer. The album is a musician at the peak of his compositional talents.

For the album’s release show at the most-appropriate setting of the Brooklyn Music School, Kid Millions brought together many of the album’s players (but none of the celebrities) as a profoundly talented orchestra. Among the many players too numerous to list in its entirety, there was the percussion group TIGUE, the harp of Brandee Younger, the vocals of Nina Dante and Nick Hallett, and the lively lead bass of Brandon Lopez. Kid introduces everyone on the recording and rest assured that this compilation of talent is truly remarkable. The band worked through three of the tracks from Play What They Want and one older piece in a well-paced set of material that touched on elements of jazz, prog and drone and highlighted the natural rhythmic talents of its protagonist.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a superb soundboard feed provided by the talents of house FOH Ben Manley. The result is an outstanding capture with depth and clarity. Enjoy!

Ween: June 6, 2017 Brooklyn Steel

June 11, 2017
By

Our friend Chris Davis from “Team Dirty South” came north to capture this show for NYCTaper, and he reports:

Ween @ Brooklyn Steel on June 6, 2017 – A Team Dirty South/NYCTaper Joint

After some mild subway misdirection, an uber dropped me off at Brooklyn Steel exactly at 7:00. I was surprised to find a long line well around the corner. In Charleston, music fans show up an hour late for everything. This was my first indication that this Brooklyn Ween crowd was hungry and eagerly anticipating this two-night run following the band’s reuniting just last year. Conversation around me in line was entirely Ween focused: a spirited Brooklyn Bowl-Las Vegas February run discussion, Sunday’s Baltimore setlist review and expectations for the evening. Clearly, this crowd was excited and ready for a rock show.

The line moved quickly and in about 10 minutes I was getting patted down at the entrance. My recording gear seemed to be understood; however the microphone stand was a source of confusion. Luckily, the NYCTaper crew had rolled out the red carpet and I knew exactly who to ask for. Another taper and I waited patiently until Anthony, the venue manager came over. Anthony had seen the likes of us before; and quickly instructed us on how Brooklyn Steel wants it done. No worries, Anthony was very accommodating and friendly, and instantly we were inside hoisting mics and pressing buttons.

Wow. This crowd was ravenous. Fans started screaming around 8:00 and didn’t stop. The place erupted when Ween took the stage around 8:30. Meandering slowly into “The Stallion”, then launching into “You Fucked Up”; this crowd knew the gloves were off and we were all in for a serious “all ages” Ween show! The set was richly scattered with Ween favorites (or classics if you can say that about the Ween catalog): “Transdermal”, “Push the Daisies”, “Roses are Free”, things were moving on and the Ween crowd was fully engaged. I heard very little crowd chatter and the recording reflects it. The band continued on through a twisty “HIV Song” and a rocking “Spinal Meningitis”. About halfway through the set, Gene pulled out the acoustic and announced “this is the first time we’ve ever played this”, and tuned into the opening chords of “Among His Tribe” off the 2003 Quebec album. What a surprise! As if not to take themselves or the moment too seriously, Ween followed quickly with “Piss Up a Rope”. The room would erupt again when the band announced a “nice party jam” and led us through David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”; a cover recently performed in Baltimore after a 6 year absence since New Years 2011. Immediately following, we were treated to the first live version of “Seconds” since summer 2002. The band lit the room up again with a super-funky “Going Gets Tough”, then winded things down with “Someday”. After a nearly 5-minute encore break; Ween gave us a Gene-less “Fiesta”, with Gene returning to the stage to shut things down with “The Mollusk”. The band left the stage at 10:42, following a few mentions of “tomorrow night”. Ween certainly left this crowd engaged and primed for another show!

I was a quick Uber back to Manhattan by 11:15, with a Shake Shack burger and a bottle of cabernet delivered to my hotel room, only in NYC for this Team Dirty South taper!

Horse Lords: June 4, 2017 Sunnyvale

June 8, 2017
By

Last Summer during a heat wave we hosted a show headlined by Horse Lords at Trans-Pecos and it was a glorious night of cool air and even cooler music. EricPH “found” this band for the site in 2015, but by 2016 their Northern Spy album Interventions put them on the map for all of us. Horse Lords is comprised of four superb musicians with not only music-school skills but the touch and timing to play incredibly intricate music in complete sync with each other. They combine the best parts of prog, jazz and math rock into extended suites in the live setting that inspires repeated listens.

On Sunday night at Sunnyvale, Horse Lords brought out the diehards and there are now quite a few of these enlightened folks. The crowd wasn’t overwhelming, but those who were there were all-in — the band’s peaks and valley and twists and turns had the entire crowd hanging on for dear life. The set was culled primarily from Interventions but also included one extended older cut to finish the set. From my vantage point at the front of the stage, it was a quite an impressive image of four musicians instinctively in tune with each other. Horse Lords are a band not to be missed, and we will continue to follow this outstanding group.

Horse Lords are currently on a short midwest tour which visits Toronto, Cleveland and Chicago beginning tonight through Friday. All dates and venues here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at the front of the stage and mixed with an excellent board feed. The mix of the two sources compliments perfectly and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: May 23, 2017 Brooklyn Steel

May 29, 2017
By

[photos by Will Oliver of We All Want Someone blog]

Last year, I wrote about this site’s history with Animal Collective and celebrated the serious rejuvenation of the band’s fortunes. That show at Irving Plaza was our first introduction to the live performances of the Painting With material. We also caught the show later in the year at Terminal 5. In the ensuing months, Animal Collective released two EPs with material related to the album and continued to tour. This Spring saw their return to NYC for a show at the new Bowery Presents venue Brooklyn Steel and last Tuesday’s show was perhaps the most powerful Animal Collective performance we’ve experienced in more than a decade of seeing the band.

This was our first experience at Brooklyn Steel and I was impressed. There’s definitely a nice vibe to the venue, and the sound quality from our vantage point was on point — full spectrum rich sound with no boominess at all. The intensity of the acoustics in the venue served the band well, as Animal Collective provided thundering bass beats to accompany the multi-layered three-pronged sound delivery system. This tour’s version of the band features Panda, Geologist and Avey across the front accompanied by drummer Jeremy Hyman at center rear of the stage. The set featured much of the recent material but also satisfied long-time fans with older tracks democratically selected from their many releases and some deep cuts not heard in years. The sold-out crowd called the band back after a healthy 75 minute main set and we were treated to an extended encore set that closed the night with a lengthy and rousing version of “Summertime Clothes”.

Animal Collective’s tour continues with some June and July shows, all dates [here].

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypercards mounted at the elevated area inside of the soundboard area and with the mics raised high. The amazing sound in the venue and the choice of microphones worked perfectly as this recording is really quite superb. Enjoy!

Yes, it was ten years ago today that NYCTaper made its first post and began as a live music blog or taper blog or whatever we’ve ultimately become. Its been a tremendous decade for us here and as I literally just paid our server host for another two year registration, we will continue on.

There are of course hundreds of folks who have helped make this experience possible. Thanks as always to our faithful readers, the amazing photographers who permit us to post their work, the venues and FOH engineers that let us record inside their events, and of course the many artists who have graciously permitted us to record their shows.

There is no show to celebrate this anniversary unfortunately, but maybe we’ll even something more important to celebrate soon.
