It is a pure coincidence that our next post after Diane Cluck is her sometime collaborator and fellow anti-folk alum Jeffrey Lewis. We spoke at length with Jeffrey after his entertaining performance at the first night of the Don Giovanni Records showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night. Speaking to Jeffrey is almost as entertaining as seeing him live, but we also learned that he was in fact at the Diane Cluck show on Tuesday. It is not a coincidence however that the two artists have chosen the same uncompromising career choices, Diane as a direct-to-fan artist and Jeffrey as a multi-talentend jack of all trades — songwriter, cartoonist, humorist and writer. The performance on Friday offered a forty-minute glimpse of these talents and was a thoroughly enjoyable set on many levels, offbeat (“Cult Boyfriend” streaming below), thoughtful (“Life”), educational (“Pocahontas”), and completely hilarious (“The Pigeon”, a yiddish LES spoof of Poe’s The Raven). We have had the luck to see Jeffrey several times, but inexplicably he’s never been on the site. We are happy to finally have him here, and hope there are more to come.

I recorded this set with acidjack from a prime location in this venue. I mixed the Sennheiser cards with a fine soundboard feed and the results are superb. Enjoy!

I think its fair to say that Diane Cluck has had an admirable but unconventional career. As part of the early 2000’s NYC anti-folk movement, she’s been an abundant songwriting and performing talent for well over a decade. But while some of her early contemporaries have moved to major labels, Diane has eschewed conventional success to pursue a more rewarding personal journey. But it seems that despite her uncompromising career choices, her time has come. Last Spring, Diane introduced her “Song of the Week”, where in a kickstarter-style subscription service her fans can receive one song at regular intervals until all 24 songs of her project are revealed. Each release is accompanied by lyrics and personal discussions with Diane. This is essentially artist-to-fan interaction at its purest form and represents an ideal format for this particular artist. At present, there have been eight releases which have included seven songs and set of poems. At Joe’s Pub on Tuesday night, Diane Cluck performed all seven of those songs in a compellingly beautiful seventy minute set. While the venue was not packed on this mid-week late show, there was nevertheless a healthy crowd of adoring fans, all of whom were quiet and rapt with attention to the performer throughout the music but who were also vociferous in their praise in between songs. Diane performed with a trio who included her recent collaborators cellist Isabel Castellvi and percussionist Anders Griffen, and the group worked through a setlist of highlights from Diane’s catalog with grace and precision. Diane Cluck does not perform frequently in NYC, but rest assured we’ll be there again when she returns.

I recorded this set with the DPA 4061 omnis attached to the large pole on the right side of the venue and mixed with a mono feed from the soundboard. Joe’s Pub has some hurdles to capture a clean recording, including the sounds of an active restaurant and the rumble of the 6 train below the venue. I mixed the sources about 60/40 in favor of the board over the mics, but some of the ambient sounds can still be heard, which are necessary in order to maintain the feel of the room. Overall, the sound of this recording is still quite excellent. Enjoy!

Cracker: January 19, 2013 Stage 48 – Flac/MP3/Streaming

On their annual co-tour with Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker usually gets the anchor spot. I guess this is because David Lowery, who gets double duty each night, sings louder and more vociferously for Cracker’s style of music than he does for CVB, and if the bands were reversed he’d have no voice at all for the Camper set. For the Stage 48 show a few weeks back, this was again the case. Lowery was his usual more animated Cracker self for a very energetic show. But on that night, we were doubly impressed with the work of Johnny Hickman whose energy, humor and guitar work always makes a Cracker show more entertaining. At the Stage 48 show however, Johnny seemed especially moved by the recent loss of a friend Mac Shingleton and the dedication to Mac of “Another Song About the Rain” ignited something special in that song and the moving version was the highlight of the evening. We’re streaming it below.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the CVB set and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Mac DeMarco is pulling your leg. He acts the part of the hick from Canada just playing his guitar with his friends, joking about everything, drinking, burping into the microphone, and generally just goofing around. And then the music starts. The songs are typical for an early 20s performer, so yeah there’s also some goof in there, but the serious aspect is that Mac can write and perform top notch indie-pop. Captured Tracks is in on it too, as they’ve released the debut EP and Mac’s new album 2. At Webster Hall on Friday, all of the hijinx were present but the musicianship was there too. Mac worked through much of his still young catalog and threw in a few crazy covers — who goes from Brubeck to Limp Bizkit on a dime — but still managed to perform an extremely entertaining forty-five minute set. Mac DeMarco will continue to tour throughout the year and today it was announced that he’ll be the support on the new Phoenix tour.

Woodsman: January 25, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Denver band Woodsman make a unique brand of rock that features unconventional song structures and a mystical, blissed-out vibe.  While their excellent 2011 release, Rare Forms, was a good listen, the band had already evolved beyond it by the time of its release, as evidence by the Mystic Places EP that followed it shortly after.  As evidenced by much of the new material played during this opening set at Mercury Lounge, the band’s last year or so found them moving the goalposts again.  Here, the band performed a series of pure instrumentals, all of them save their 2012 single release “All Tangled Up” being brand new. These songs are about developing texture and mood, almost totally absent the bombastic dance-floor sound that kicked off Rare Forms or the Spiritualized/Pink Floyd-style rock sound that characterized much of Mystic Places. Part of the change in feel owes to the band’s shift from a two-drummer four piece to one-drummer trio, which, depending on which of their styles you like best, could be addition by subtraction.  These new compositions show considerable promise for the forthcoming third LP, in particular the night’s final complete number, “Ruin”.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA500N hypercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the talented longtime Mercury Lounge engineer Kevin. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Ty Segall: February 1, 2013 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Our last visit with Ty Segall was less than six months ago in the intimate DIY venue Death By Audio, when Ty played an unannounced “secret show” to a frenzied crowd of about 100 people. That show was one of our favorite ones of 2012 for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was that we were able to see this exciting and uber-talented performer from only a few feet away. Ty is perhaps the premiere current garage rock purveyor and his star continues to grow. On Friday, Ty Segall sold out Webster Hall. This was not a soft sell out — tickets prices were inflated five times over on various secondary markets for weeks before the show. After two outstanding opening sets by Ex-Cult and Mac DeMarco (coming soon), Ty took the stage in front of a completely manic crowd literally stuffed into every inch of the floor. It didn’t take long for space to clear however, as the moshing was frequent and intense and consisted of a majority of the floor dwellers. Our vantage point was quite different from DBA, as we occupied our usual Webster spot on the right side of the soundboard perch which gave us a full vantage point of the entire crazy floor. But while the crowd was certainly entertaining and a hoot to watch, the real action was on stage where Ty and his band ripped through an hour-long set. The setlist included five songs from his latest album the outstanding Twins and a good mix of old and new material going all the way back to his first official 7″ “Skin”. Ty Segall’s tour continues through the middle of February and moves through the midwest, dates here.

I recorded this show from the soundboard perch with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Brian Settles & Central Union: January 16, 2013 Barbès – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Virtually all  of the music we cover on this website, partly by design, but partly by inertia, falls somewhere along the spectrum of “rock” music. Even if that’s the case, that represents only a fraction of the music we listen to, or are interested in. New York remains a hotbed of activity for the still-vital jazz scene, and one of the easiest and most low-key ways to get some exposure to the scene right now is through The Palimpsestic Series, curated by Oscar Noriega at the Park Slope bar Barbès every Wednesday night.  On the advice of a friend, I settled in on a recent night for an outstanding set by the Washington, D.C. virtuoso tenor saxophonist Brian Settles and most of his band Central Union (Jeremy Carlstedt, on drums and Jean Marie Collatin Faye, on percussion and bassist Corcoran Holt). Settles’ 2011 album, Secret Handshake, represents the first record for the accomplished Duke Ellington School of the Arts veteran as a bandleader, a role  into which he fits admirably. This set featured two of those compositions, “Zui Quan” and “Soulnimsky”, a cover of John Coltrane’s “Reverend King”, and three new numbers. Some rock shows make me flat-out bored these days; watching Settles and his band up close in this setting was riveting. In this postage-stamp-sized room, it’s not hard to arrive early enough to get a front-row seat to the action, and I would encourage live jazz newbies (like me) to take advantage of a chance to not only listen to the players, but watch how they interact with each other and the piece of music. Especially as live music is concerned, jazz (especially of the more avant-garde variety) is an undeservedly obscure art form. There is a whole world of exceptional performances out there – like this one – if you take the time to seek them out.

Settles will next appear in New York on this Saturday, Feb 2., when he and Carlstedt appear as a duo as part of the Evolving Music Series, located at 107 Suffolk Street in Manhattan.  Their set time is 10:30pm, and you can get tickets at the door.

I recorded this set directly in front of the band using the mid-side technique with a Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphone as the center channel and a Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphone as the “side”, which allows the recordist to vary the width of the stereo image.  This recording provides exceptional width and clarity, though the instruments may be too localized for some people’s taste if they listen through headphones.  Enjoy!

The Amazing: January 25, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Amazing hail from Sweden and share some members with that country’s well-known retro-psych outfit Dungen (our most recent recording of them HERE).  While The Amazing also share some stylistic traits with that band, most obviously the stellar guitar work of both bands’ lead guitarist Reine Fisk, they also stand as a distinct entity. The Amazing’s sound is a more nuanced affair than the rock behemoth that is Dungen, and their songwriting is more wistful and textured.  Frontman Christoff Gunrup sings in English, and that combined with the instrumental approach gives The Amazing the caste of a folkier, almost countrified version of Dungen.  This show at Mercury Lounge found the band celebrating the release of their latest record, Gentle Stream, their second full-length LP and first to be released by our good friends at Partisan Records. The boys served up material from all three of their current records, with an appropriate amount of emphasis given to the latest effort. This was their final NYC show for a bit, but don’t ignore a chance to see these guys, wherever they may be.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA500N hypercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the talented longtime Mercury Lounge engineer Kevin. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Trey Anastasio Band: January 24, 2013 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The band Phish will be celebrating its 30th year of existence this year – an impressive feat for any band, but even more so for one as consumed with playing long, varied sets that maintains a pretty intense tour schedule when they’re out.  But as Trey Anastasio reminded us at the beautifully refurbished Capitol Theatre in the Westchester suburbs last week, his Trey Anastasio Band project has had some staying power of its own. This year marks that band’s fifteenth anniversary, and that showed. It might even be fair to say that, with a less rigorous schedule and many fewer dates in each of those years, this band has more room to grow as a unit than the mothership itself. Trey has long since been at a point in his career where he can do what he wants, and TAB gives him even more freedom to be as eccentric and humorous as he wants to be. From the Honey Boo Boo jokes to the inspired cover of Bob Marley’s “Small Axe”, this second night of the Capitol run showed a band and a leader comfortable with where they are and thoroughly enjoying the tunes they had to offer.  The set included some less-played numbers like “Greyhound” and “Words to Wanda”, and of course, some songs from Trey’s new record, Traveler, including our favorite, “Valentine.” Three of us from the nyctaper crew attended the show, and I think it’s fair to say a good time was had by all.

The Capitol Theatre is a welcome new (re-)addition to the NYC-area venue scene. The site of some legendary Grateful Dead shows has been lovingly restored to its former glory, with the added bonus of a friendly, competent and cool staff.  We wish the new venue well and hope to return soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones from the official taper section of the venue, joined by Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and hi and lo.  While the Capitol asks that we keep mic stands fairly low – meaning closer to chatty audience members – we found the sound in the spot to be nearly flawless, and the resulting recording reflects the theater’s fine acoustics and the outstanding effort’s of Trey’s FOH team. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead: January 26, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If you have any interest at all, even passing, in the music of the Grateful Dead, then what happened at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night was an important milestone in the post-Dead era. I do not exaggerate, this was a big deal. In the seventeen years since the death of Jerry Garcia and the dissolution of the Grateful Dead as an active band, there has been a steady and sometimes tiresome parade of bands attempting to “capture the magic”. In 2009, such a group even went as far as to tour as “The Dead”. One band plays complete setlists from historical Dead shows. Invariably those bands offer some connection to the band, often an original member or two, and some excellent musicianship — but there is always something lacking. Those bands can mimic the sound and usually feature a wiz guitarist with the ability to ape Garcia’s original sound. But the inherent problem is that it all seems so canned and knock-off-ish, lacking in originality and ultimately devoid of any magic at all. Sure, there are moments, or sets, or even complete shows that are rewarding in the short term. Phil Lesh and Friends has perhaps the best track record in terms of sustained performance quality. But as a whole the entire post-Dead era seems to be just a steady beat of disappointment.

On Saturday night, I saw the first post-Dead band that truly offered music that rivaled the original band at its peak. But what separated Joe Russo’s “Almost Dead” from the others was their approach to the music. This was not a mimic or an imitation, but a quintet of supremely talented musicians interpreting the music in their own unique manner. The two guitarists, Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton, have carved out excellent careers on their own merit. And thankfully neither sounded really anything like Garcia. Marco Benevento used his many talents on an assortment of keyboards to play in his own style, not like Godchaux or Constanten or Mydland. Dave Dreiwitz played an Alembic bass, but his style is nothing like Phil Lesh. And Russo, sure he plays for “Furthur”, but with Almost Dead his drums were a lead instrument — he was able to stretch out and play in a way that the restrictions of a “tribute” band don’t allow. And play they did. Over three hours in two lengthy sets. The highlights were bountiful, but it was the little moments that captured the night for me — a space jam in the middle of Althea, a blazing Shakedown Street (streaming below) that literally began on the last note of Tennessee Jed and continued into a very original jam, the 1973-era “Stronger than Dirt” instrumental post-Eyes jam, multiple teases of Caution in and out of The Other One, and an incredibly huge and energetic Viola Lee Blues (streaming below) that pushed the show to over three hours.

Given the incredible results of this show from a musical unit that only plays occasionally, its hard to fathom that “Almost Dead” might be a one-off or a once a year event. Maybe in the post-Dead era, that’s also the right approach to this music. Get it right, and then let it go. We always have the tapes. If Joe and friends decide to do it again, however, I’ll be there. It may not be like the first time, but it won’t be a disappointment.

I recorded this set with the four mic rig from the right side of the venue, about 30 feet from the stage. The sound in the Bowl on this night was perhaps the best its ever been, and I’m really pleased with the outstanding results of this recording. Enjoy!
