If this Mercury Lounge show represents the new normal for The Soft Moon, this will be the last time I will be able to see them in a venue this size. After catching their sold out Glasslands show over in Brooklyn back in September, I knew they were on the way up.  Three months later in Manhattan, the San Francisco band showed that momentum is still going. This show kicks off a mini-tour for the band that will take them up to Boston, out to Chicago and Columbus, and down South before they wrap things up in Washington, DC later this month. The band’s live act seems at times like a note-perfect rendition of their two records, The Soft MoonZeros and the Total Decay EP, which makes sense for a band whose sound relies upon the dark, at-times cold vibe created by their electronics. The band comes across confident and polished, perhaps reveling in the semi-anonymity created by playing in total darkness, with only their window blind-like video projections lighting the room. If you happen to be in any of the cities listed here, you owe it to yourself to check them out in a small club while you can.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed by head FOH Kevin Mazzarelli and MBHO KA500N hypercardiod microphones. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Eidetic Seeing: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Eidetic Seeing are continuing work into next year on a successor to their first LP, Drink The Sun, and since I last caught up with them at Public Assembly earlier this year, they’ve already made some evolutions in the new stuff. On a night filled with different psych/noise leaning artists, the Brooklyn psych rockers were easily the youngest band on the bill. If it scared them to be opening for Gibby Haynes, Dave Shuford’s latest project and a Japanese guitar god, they didn’t show it.  Among the treats of this 33-minute set was the set closer and a brand new track, “K-2”, along with evolved versions of the new “White Flight” and “Ashplant Blues” that will appear on the band’s forthcoming album. Their last album, Drink the Sun, recently appeared on a few year-end lists despite not even being released this year! Keep these guys on your radar screen in 2013 – there’s more to come.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the balcony and a soundboard feed from the house.  The board feed was used minimally, as you will notice the keyboards were mixed a bit more loudly than ideal in the feed.  The sound of this set is excellent. Enjoy!

Math the Band: January 4, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When I first saw Math the Band, in an opening slot for Anamanaguchi at Music Hall a couple of years ago, I knew I would have to see them and record them again. That 2011 recording was just not high enough quality to post, and it frankly failed to capture the crazy energy of the performance. Friday night at Glasslands, that energy was on display again and thankfully the stars aligned to produce a faithful recording of their fun and crazy set. Math the Band has been around for a decade and they are part of the groundbreaking Providence RI art collective AS220, but the duo performs with a kind of unselfconscious elation that would be typical of a brand new band finding their footing. The Glasslands show was short and sweet, a less than 30 minute run through much of their new album Get Real and a few chosen older nuggets. While the band certainly makes abundant use of the chiptune style keyboard, the songwriting shows influences of oldies like Dead Milkmen. And like their predecessors, the live show is a hoot — a smile-inducing experience that ends too soon and leaves us wanting more. Math the Band will be touring throughout January on the East Coast, dates are here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mounted in the middle of Glasslands and mixed with an excellent board feed from house FOH Josh. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Titus Andronicus: December 14, 2012 Maxwell’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The New Jersey punk band Titus Andronicus is definitive proof that intelligent music and pure punk abandon need not be mutually exclusive. Much like their contemporaries in Fucked Up, Titus haven’t left any of their genre’s guideposts behind; their sound is relentless, unsubtle and brash and their shows (other than this one) rarely lack for mosh pit chaos and stage diving antics. But Titus isn’t content to be only that. Their second album, The Monitor, by the end of its thrilling opening number “A More Perfect Union”, cemented the notion that the New Jersey band intended to at least partially claim the mantle of their home state’s singular musical hero, Bruce Springsteen; it was a denser, more fully realized follow-up to their promising debut, and one that gained notice well outside of punk circles. Titus have been called a thinking person’s punk band, and that’s more than fair; they have proven that records filled with literary and historical allusions can still get kids to the pit. Further, not many punk bands play 90 minute sets that include seven- and eight-minute songs; Titus does that all the time. No wonder that Yo La Tengo picked Titus, along with Real Estate, to represent the guard of New Jersey rock among their opening act picks for this year’s Hanukkah shows.

The YLT crowd may have been more subdued than the ones that last saw Titus play at Maxwell’s (including at the closing of the Monitor tour in 2010), but the band spared nothing as they tore through songs from their newly released LP, Local Business along with classics from their last two. Local Business was primarily recorded live, with fewer studio flourishes than past efforts, and that made that album’s songs like “In A Big City” shine in particular. Other than the melodic intro to “No Future Part III: Escape From No Future”, the band never put the brakes on, and that was as it should be. The stage diving may have been non-existent, but the appreciation, and the energy, were very much alive in the room. One of New Jersey’s, if not the nation’s best punk bands deserved nothing less.

The Infamous Stringdusters: December 27, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Bluegrass music was born in Appalachia, far from Boston where the founders of The Infamous Stringdusters first got together. Many of the genre’s original players and adherents weren’t professionally educated in music, either – if they were educated at all. The Stringdusters were, but don’t let their skill with their instruments or their professionalism fool you – they are keeping bluegrass alive in the best of ways, paying homage to the past while moving the music into the 21st century. This Bowery Ballroom show was a homecoming for some of the band members who call New York home, and it felt like one, with the band members relaxed but on point as they delivered a nearly two and a half hour set of material from their latest record, Silver Sky, as well as wide-ranging covers that included the Police’s “Walking On the Moon” (covered on Silver Sky) and Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” as well as classic blues and country standards. I had not seen the Stringdusters live before and was kicking myself for taking this long. An evening with these guys makes for an outstanding evening of music.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA500N hypercardiod microphones from the balcony. Fortunately, hi and lo was with me to provide a second source to patch about 7 minutes of the set that were missed when I had an equipment problem.  The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub): December 15, 2012 Maxwell’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Teenage Fanclub is one of those “90s bands” that has taken on a more mythical quality in its comeback years than what it enjoyed during the first part of their career. Try finding classic records like Grand Prix on vinyl and you’ll discover that interest in this band hasn’t waned at all. Norman Blake, the band’s frontman and one of its founders, was a huge part of this, contributing delicate, nuanced songwriting and classic pop sensibility to the Scottish act’s sound. At the peak of their popularity in the 90s, Teenage Fanclub took an up-and-coming American act, Yo La Tengo, on tour with them. The friendship and mutual respect have remained ever since.

That made Blake a natural choice for the opening act of the final Hanukkah show at Maxwell’s; his presence was literally a visit from an old friend for Yo La Tengo, and it felt that way for the rest of us. Playing both Fanclub songs and songs from his other project, Jonny (“You Was Me”, streaming above, is a Jonny number), Blake was laid-back and unworried and delightfully shambolic; he didn’t hesitate to mention mid-song when he flubbed a solo or messed up a tuning. But this wasn’t the kind of show where anyone cared; in the 150-capacity confines of Maxwell’s, this solo acoustic set felt like hanging out with Blake in a family basement. He went on to join YLT for the bulk of their set as well, making this a fine night for Norman Blake, and for us.

I recorded this set primarily with a soundboard feed provided by Carson Kopp, the long-time engineer of Maxwell’s, with Schoeps MK5 microphones providing a bit of additional ambiance.  The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Suzuki Junzo: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Japanese guitarist Suzuki Junzo‘s latest album is entitled Ode To A Blue Ghost, and that is an apt description for the spectral noise that Junzo wrings from his guitar. I was not familiar with Junzo before this show, but he has had a long career in the Japanese guitar underground, cranking out a host of self- and label-released records. This show at Union Pool with fellow avant-gardists Rhyton, Eidetic Seeing and the Gibby Haynes and Kohoutek-affiliated Ultimate Vag gave fans of far-out psych and noise a lot to love, but even the musicians in the other bands were somewhat unfamiliar with Junzo’s work. With an undercurrent of blues, Junzo’s guitar sounds can run a surprising emotional range, blending the familiar with the unfamiliar. This show represented a fairly rare chance to see Junzo outside his native Japan, and we are thrilled to have been there to capture it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed by the house engineer, Doug.  This favors the soundboard mix as it is all guitar, and other than a few spots of DI distortion, it is excellent.  Enjoy!

NYCTaper’s Favorite Concerts We Recorded in 2012 (w/ Streaming Songs)

There is always more live music going on in New York than any one person (or four people) can see at one time, let alone record and share. Add to that the tradition of the summer road-trip (or flight to North Carolina) and we had a ton of shows to see, share and discuss. When you record this many shows, it’s pretty easy for your memory of individual ones to get hazy. Some you forget (or maybe want to forget) altogether. This list is not intended as a definitive “best of”, necessarily, but out of the hundreds of bands we saw take the stage, the moments represented here were the ones that not only stuck in our minds, but that we kept turning back to and listening to again and again. This was another tough year for New York and for this country in general, but that didn’t stop people from making great music, and we are thankful to have been there to witness it as often as we were. We hope that if you listened to any of our recordings this year that they brought you happiness, and wish you all the best for 2013.

We were lucky enough to catch two of the Biophilia: Live shows by Björk, an original and rare talent whose bizarre science-meets-music vision brought to life on a 360-degree stage was as electric as the giant Tesla coil onstage. The singer’s voice is without match, and the Icelandic choir that joined her made the material even better. These were some of the most popular recordings on the site this year, even if the sound alone could not quite do these staggeringly entertaining performances justice.

Hiss Golden Messenger – September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival, Raleigh, NC (day show and night show)

Other than that he isn’t in a major media market, is on a tiny, mostly reissue-based label, and has a challenging full-time day job, I can’t figure out why MC Taylor, who performs as Hiss Golden Messenger, isn’t more popular outside of North Carolina. I suppose those three are good reasons, but as this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC reminded us, North Carolina is very much a musical hotbed right now. Taylor’s music is an approachable blend of rock, country, gospel and folk, with a timeless appeal that can span generations and earn Grammy awards. At these two shows – first the Three Lobed Recordings/’WXDU Day Show in a stripped-down setup, and then at night in a larger auditorium with a full band, Taylor performed songs that were flat-out heartbreakingly beautiful and just as equally memorable. The man’s performances are instant classics. If he comes to your town, drop what you’re going and go see what he’s about.

Akron/Family – January 21, 2012 at 285 Kent

Akron/Family almost always put on a memorable show, but the freewheeling atmosphere of 285 Kent combined with A/F almost guaranteed one for this night. This manic, lengthy celebratory, show featured full crowd participation (audience drummers!) and an intense performance.

Dinosaur Jr. – December 1, 2012 Terminal 5

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I had already nominated this show as one of the best of the year before we had even hit the post-show pavement. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the album You’re Living All Over Me, the original lineup played that record and a slew of other favorites with special guests including Frank Black, Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon, Don Fleming, Johnny Marr, Tommy Stinson and NYC’s current favorite journeyman artist Fred Armisen. For me, the rendition of “Don’t” with Gordon on vocals  was the night’s absolute barnburner.

Thanks to the location and its signature product, I’m not sure how clearly most of us, er, actually remember this show. But the entire NYCTaper crew taking a roadtrip to one of New York’s best breweries to see one of our favorite bands had to mark a high point of the year for us. Wilco played an excellent set in at-times-torrential rain that included some rare numbers like “Laminated Cat” as well as a trio of Being There classics as part of the encore. At least, I think that’s what happened….

Ty Segall/Thee Oh Sees – September 24, 2012 Death By Audio

I didn’t have a better time at any other show this year.  Two big acts (one of whom we were writing about back in 2009) in small clubs playing their butts off is always a good combination.

It’s easy to be cynical about a lead singer of a still-thriving band doing a solo album (this one his second). But Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers showed himself to be a musical force in his own right. Laughing and telling stories to the crowd in between numbers, this show gave us a window into the man’s soul in a way that you can’t get at the Truckers’ more big-time performances.

An amazing story of how the original members of Luna decided to reunite with Sean Eden for a charity and play songs we’re not likely to ever hear again live in this configuration. And our pals The War on Drugs were there to play a set (and dedicate a song to us) as well!

As is so often the case, promoter ToddP got a crack at this band as a headliner before the hype machine had quite hit full steam.  Sure, 285 Kent isn’t Music Hall of Williamsburg size-wise, but there were more than enough in-the-know people to slam-pack this venue to its sweatiest capacity, as DIIV showed themselves to be one of this year’s best new bands (as many other sites would later acknowledge). Oh, and they covered an unreleased Nirvana b-side, too.

Is it hard to overstate how fucking awesome it is to have one of our favorite bands playing one of our favorite sets of theirs ever at a show thrown to celebrate five years of this site’s existence? Why, yes it is.

Yo La Tengo – all of the 2012 Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s, but particularly December 9, 2012, December 10, 2012 and December 14, 2012

At points this December it felt like the site should be called “YoLaTengoTaper” given the amount of time we were spending at Maxwell’s to see this year’s Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows. Our obsession with these shows is well-justified;  the storyline is irresistible. A legendary local band, playing eight shows in a row from their tiny homebase venue to benefit Hurricane Sandy recovery, with special guests like the Sun Ra Arkestra, The Feelies, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Bird, Kid Millions of Oneida, and more is kind of the ultimate holiday gift from a band to its fans, no?

Sharon Van Etten – February 26, 2012 Bowery Ballroom

We have followed Sharon Van Etten for years and our respect for her is well-documented, but this homecoming show at Bowery Ballroom represented the full realization of Van Etten as a bona fide full band. The Tramp material in particular here was performed flawlessly, with the grace and intensity we’ve come to expect from her.

Lower Dens – May 2, 2012 Glasslands

I usually find it hard to narrow down the number of “favorite” shows I see at Glasslands, but this year, this Lower Dens show was a huge standout. With the Baltimore band touring behind their expansive new LP, Nootropics, they showed up in front of a maxed-out crowd and proved that their meditative, texture-heavy songs could also kill it live.

Kevin Devine – December 1, 2012 Webster Hall

December 1st must have been one of the best days for music all year. Two of our favorite shows – Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5 and this sprawling Kevin Devine show – happened on this date, and we missed at least two others that would have been must-sees on any other night. We’re not sure any contemporary artist has ever played three full albums on one date, but Kevin did it, and with exceptional grace. A night to remember.

When you see a band on the night that they discover they’ve “made it” in New York, you usually see them at their best. After that moment, things will never be the same for them, internally or externally. From 2009 until this moment, Alabama Shakes was an at-best regionally known band from Athens, Alabama that had been gaining some post-CMJ buzz from 2011. After this Bowery Ballroom show, as I said to Johnny Fried Chicken Boy during the show, they were headed straight for a Grammy, which they now have a pretty good shot at earning. They were obviously humbled and amazed by what they saw in front of them – a slew of industry people and eager fans looking at the “next big thing”.  And they played that way.

Among several shows of theirs we saw this year (including our own CMJ show), this was the perfect example of a band finding its voice in the live setting at the same time as they released a fantastic album – in this case, the largely unheralded but outstanding Look Out Mama. 

Woods – November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg

As many of us were just emerging from Hurricane Sandy hell (and many were still stuck in it), Woods gave Brooklynites a reason to leave the house for this outstanding show at Music Hall. Woods may be of the more recent vintage of Brooklyn bands, but their ability to stretch, bend and reshape a song is of another era. Their appropriately titled new record, Bend Beyond, is only a guidepost for what you get at one of their incredible live shows.

When I was at this show, I thought it heralded a comeback for the Athens, GA-based psychedelic wizards. Instead, this was the last time I would ever see Olivia Tremor Control. Founding member Bill Doss passed away scarcely a month later, and with him, this cherished cornerstone of the Elephant 6 collective. Rest in peace, Bill, and may your music live forever.

The Mountain Goats – October 13, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg

Those in the know called this Mountain Goats show the best of the latest tour. We’re here to give you the audio evidence that they’re right.

Set against a backdrop of the Catskill Mountains, Gov’t Mule and the Levon Helm Band paid one hell of a tribute to one of music’s most dearly departed this year, Levon Helm. As if the idea that music has the power to transcend even death needed affirming, these guys did it with this performance.

The Feelies: December 10, 2012 Maxwell’s – Flac/Mp3/Streaming

At this point chronologically, the Feelies v.3 has lasted almost as long as versions 1 or 2. But what has been consistent is that sound — the methodical, trance-like rhythms providing a backdrop for the melodic and precise guitar work of Glenn Mercer. Another consistent aspect of the band is their commitment to Maxwell’s and Hoboken. When Yo La Tengo came calling offering an opening gig to benefit their shared storm-tattered town, the Feelies were there on Night 3 to play and provide support to that show’s charity — this time the NJ Community Food Bank. The band then proceeded to play a blistering set and perhaps the longest opening gig for a Hanukkah show we’ve ever seen. But the crowd has no complaints, as the Feelies performed songs old and new with a clarity and purpose to behold. We’re streaming the duo of “Raised Eyebrows” and “Crazy Rhythms”, a segue that we’ve left intact. It encapsulated all that is right with the Feelies, ferocious duo-drums and a head-long crash into one of their oldest songs played at breakneck speed until it collapsed into a noise drenched finale of pure bliss.

I recorded this set in the same exact manner as the Yo La Tengo set from this night and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: December 4, 2012 Terminal 5 – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Ever the new music innovators, for their tour in 2012 Animal Collective has gone retro. Over the last decade the band has slowly evolved into a purely electronic live act. And when founder Deakin took a “leave”, the band was a trio for the last several years. But Deakin is back and so is a more traditional band layout on stage. At Terminal 5 earlier this month, Panda Bear spent the entire show playing a full drum set, Deakin was primarily on guitar and Avey Tare played keyboards. Surely, there were electronics — Geologist mostly, but each of the other three had their gizmos laid out in front of them. This year the band is touring on the strength of the new album Centipede Hz (Domino), a release that flew under the buzz radar but which is as solid as anything the band has ever produced. At Terminal 5 Animal Collective played two consecutive nights, a make-up of sorts for the Williamsburg Waterfront show postponed in August. AC seemed quite comfortable in the “new” config on the first night of the Terminal 5 shows, and played nearly two hours. The setlist began with almost all of Centipede before the classics to closed the show. Animal Collective will tour Australia after the New Year, and likely return to NYC for Spring or Summer shows.

I recorded this show with the 4-mic configuration from inside of the soundboard booth on the floor. The large venue swallowed up some of the sound on this night, so that while the recording is rich in bottom end, its also a bit “boomy”. With that caveat, enjoy!
