THE FIELD RECORDINGS: January 4, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The very first band I saw in 2012 was a bit of a shot in the dark – I wasn’t really aware of THE FIELD RECORDINGS (capitalization theirs), but scanning the first-week schedules of my regular haunts, I came across their gig with Clear Plastic Masks at Mercury Lounge, checked out their music on bandcamp, and liked what I heard. The New Haven, CT threesome didn’t disappoint, delivering a set of ambitious, well-crafted guitar-driven noise pop. Their upbeat guitar sound and penchant for unusual time changes recalls some bands of the mid-90s DC scene, The Dismemberment Plan in particular, while frontman Daniel Gallo’s vocals remind me of a younger, more caffeinated Lou Barlow (Gallo claims to have never listened to Sebadoh, so it would seem to be coincidental). The band’s name derives from, as Gallo puts it, “that our songs are whatever is going on around us, socially, politically, and philosophically. Which is a long way of saying that I don’t quite write about girls but I wish I did.”

No matter. In the live setting, you’re likely to be paying more attention to the band’s infectious enthusiasm (Gallo’s in particular) and the tightness and professionalism of their playing – a sloppy indie band this is not. Gallo and drummer Jared Thompson have been playing music together since high school, and have been in the band’s current configuration since 2008 when bassist Noel Thomas joined, and the time spent building that chemistry shows. The band’s current record, The Elastic Nostaglia, is available for five bucks on their bandcamp page, and that’s money well spent for some of the most exciting music coming from our neighbor state to the northeast. After gigging heavily for the last few years, the band is looking to take things to the next level this year – and if this show is any indication, they have a solid chance of doing it.

The most important factor in any Mercury Lounge recording is the quality and skill of the FOH team, and Kevin did not disappoint as usual with an outstanding house mix and board feed. Schoeps supercardiod mics recorded the house mix. The sound quality is flawless. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 24, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We are fortunate the longtime friend of the site and part-time contributor neild was able to capture the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Night 5 / Christmas Eve show this year.

As soon as I spotted Tara Key limbering up her guitar on Saturday, I had a good feeling about Night 5 of this year’s Yo La Tengo Hanukkah run. Having seen Tara many times with her excellent band Antietam, as well as sitting in with YLT this spring at the Bell House, I couldn’t have been more thrilled to see her introduced as the night’s guest guitarist while Ira Kaplan makes his deliberate return from the disabled list. The band started slow, literally, with their quiet version of “Big Day Coming,” the beautiful “Crying of Lot G” (one of the best in YLT’s mini-genre of domestic-argument songs), and a weird, droney, slowed-down version of “Upside Down” from 1991’s May I Sing With Me. It was all lovely and enjoyable … and then the band kicked it into another gear, starting with the three-guitar version of “Double Dare” (James McNew switching from bass to acoustic guitar), which was only one of the best versions of that song I’ve yet heard live. Things only got better from there: Georgia was absolutely on fire behind the drums (when Hubley’s on fire, no one can touch her!), and Ira and Tara’s guitars intertwined magically on the rocked-out songs that followed, especially a brilliant “Decora” (cf. “Double Dare” re: “best versions ever”). The main set culminated in *another* version of “Big Day Coming,” followed by YLT’s cover of “Little Honda,” (streaming below) which devolved into a noise jam to end all noise jams that has my ears still ringing 24 hours later. Add in an encore that featured comedian Jon Glaser performing Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” as his character from “Delocated” – it turns out that this is a song that’s always cried out to be sung through a voice modulator – and it was an epic, epic night, even by Maxwell’s Hanukkah standards.

The show was recorded with Core Sound binaural mics, mounted on a stand at the corner of the Maxwell’s sound booth, fed into a Microphone Madness battery box (with moderate bass rolloff) and then to an iRiver 320 running Rockbox. Big thanks to Carson for all his help, and both Carson and Mark for creating a great mix that brought out the nuances of the quiet material while keeping the high-decibel songs from being reduced to white noise. (“Little Honda” excepted, and that was intentional.) I’m going to stop gushing now, and go listen to this show again. You should do the same, if you know what’s good for you.

Yo La Tengo: December 27, 2011 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

That life is short is one of those well-worn cliches. It’s also true. Knowing that this would be the only Yo La Tengo Hanukkah show I would see this year – and knowing that YLT frontman Ira Kaplan might not have been able to make it at all – that old cliche came to mind in full force. This is a band that consistently holds nothing back – a band that, whenever its career is over, will wind up its run with no regrets. The same can be said of this Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s, which found classic acts like Pussy Galore and The Trypes reunited, showed off Lee Ranaldo’s post-Sonic Youth project, and found critical darlings like the Sea and Cake and Kurt Vile opening.

The openers are always a big part of the story with these shows, but Yo La Tengo rightfully remains the focus. Once again, they delivered a set that was by turns fiercely jammy and rocking, quiet and pensive, and funny. And as with virtually every Hanukkah set they play, it was full of surprises and special guests. Continuing the tradition of covering Jewish musicians, after a solemn opener of “As the Hour Grows Late,” the band moved on to Bob Dylan’s “I Threw It All Away”, followed by a nearly ten-minute guitar-freakout version of Velvet Underground’s “Heroin,” that featured Eleventh Dream Day’s Rick Rizzo ripping it up on guitar. Though still early in the night, that could easily be my top highlight. On the other hand, it’s hard to argue with the sprawling sequence of “From A Motel 6” into two Beatles numbers “Flying” and “It’s All Too Much” each featuring The Trypes. But then, if you were Ira, you’d probably pick the song that closed out the eight-night session – his mother, Marilyn, performing Bob Hilliard and Lee Pockriss’ “My Little Corner of the World”. Ms. Kaplan and her son can now check another item off of their bucket list. And so do we.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with four microphones and soundboard feed running into two clock-synced decks, providing rich, fantastic sound. Enjoy!

Kurt Vile: December 26, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

2011 has been a tremendous year for Kurt Vile, and the kicker was that his last show of the year was an opportunity to open one of the legendary Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows on Monday. Smoke Ring For My Halo has been on every end of the year best-of list for 2011 — I’m not exaggerating, its literally been on every list I’ve seen. And for good reason. Smoke Ring is an album that seems to finally realize the full potential of Vile’s rich talents. The 2011 release is well-produced, but still captures the artist’s underground qualities and esoteric lyrics while also featuring fully formed melodies. At Maxwell’s, Kurt performed with what is most likely the final gig of this version of the Violators. Adam Granduciel was on lead guitar for this show, but has growing commitments as the War On Drugs continues its ascent in stature. On Monday, the band opened with a cover of the Feelies, one of Maxwell’s “house bands”, and then continued with much of Smoke Ring. We are streaming “Ghost Town”, the albums’s final climactic track.

I recorded this set in the same manner at the Yo La Tengo recording from this night and the sound quality is superb.

A couple of years ago, Jesse Jarnow wrote a piece in the Village Voice about NYCTaper. Although I’m obviously not completely unbiased about the writer, I felt it was not a puff piece, and I am certain that it was a well researched and thorough article on the culture of taping and the modern wrinkle that nyctaper represents. So it was a nice bit of news we got last year when we learned that Jesse received a book deal with Penguin Books to write the definitive biography of Yo La Tengo. His research and writing strengths aside, Jesse also happened to be one of the foremost experts in the details of the music of YLT — his yearly annotated Hanukkah setlists have been a great assistance in the compiling of our recordings. Given that Jesse’s book Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the Rise of Indie Rock is due for release this coming June, it was a bittersweet coincidence that this year’s Hanukkah shows have been, in large part because of the Ira’s recent health scare, thoroughly historical retrospective shows. The yearly December shows have always had their fair share of rare numbers, but this year has been special. YLT has broken out multiple songs we’ve never seen before. The guests have included original bassist Dave Rick, and on this Night 7, the incomparable Dave Schramm played the entire set. Dave was an integral part of the development of the band in the early years of Yo La Tengo, and his distinctively sweet guitar tone was the highlight of evening. We are streaming the show’s climax, YLT’s 1987 semi-obscure single “Asparagus Song”. The irony of course is that this show was one of the few over the last several years that Jesse actually missed. Hopefully, this recording can be a partial substitute.

A close brush with mortality often offers a rare opportunity for perspective and retrospection. It was twenty-seven years ago that the first Yo La Tengo show took place at Maxwell’s, and Dave Rick was the bass player on that night. For Night 4 of Hanukkah 2011, Dave joined YLT for the entire set. As a result, the setlist dug all the way back to the early YLT, including their very first release, the 7″ single “The River of Water”, along with deep track “Serpentine” from 1987’s New Wave Hot Dogs. This show’s three-song climax also included a terrific version of a rare performance of “Some Kinda Fatigue” that we’re streaming below. And in an apparent acknowledgement of the theme for the night, the set’s finale was an extended and heart-wrenching version of “More Stars Than There Are In Heaven” that highlighted the shortness of life. On this particular night, we certainly enjoyed it while we can.

Yo La Tengo: December 22, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Its the season for giving, and virtually every year Yo La Tengo gives Hanukkah presents to its fans. The eight annual Maxwell’s shows are a time for surprise openers, special guests, rare songs, and unique covers. But this year is special for another reason entirely. Following a serious and recent health scare for Ira Kaplan, there was a potential that the shows would need to be cancelled. But Ira vowed to play all eight shows, and after a medical clearance the shows went on — albeit with Ira sitting in a chair on stage. We made it to Night 3, which featured Lee Ranaldo as special guest, both as the opener and as one of the guest musicians during the YLT set. As expected, the shredding and freakout guitar numbers for YLT were mostly absent, which highlighted the band’s more mellow and contemplative side. But when it came time for the show’s climax, the presence of Lee was fortuitous. A scalding version of Lee’s Sonic Youth song (from Goo) “Mote” featured the dual shredding of Kaplan and Ranaldo, and it flowed naturally into one of those extended versions of “Hatchet” that seem to have become an annual Hanukkah treat. We are streaming both songs below. When the twenty minutes of guitar bliss was over, it was obvious that although he suffered a health scare, Ira’s decision to press forward with these shows was the greatest gift of all.

I recorded this set from our standard location in this venue, at the front right corner of the soundboard booth, and mixed the hypercardioid microphones with an excellent board feed. The quality is superb. Enjoy!

I recorded Night 4, we will have a correspondent at Night 5, and I will be attending Night 7 (with hi and lo) and Night 8 (with acidjack), so there are more YLT Hanukkah shows to come.

Montreal band Stars has long been one of my favorites. I first saw them at the now defunct Siren Festival of 2006, against the beautiful scenic backdrop that is Coney Island, and was blown away by their unique blend of pop and rock. Even though they now claim Montreal as their hometown, the band has deep NYC roots, having written their first song and several albums while living in a small West Side Apartment in the late ’90s, so it’s no surprise that they consistently return to their home away from home in the Big Apple.

We had the good fortune of seeing Stars at Music Hall of Williamsburg for a performance that was nothing short of outstanding. Their performance featured two never before played songs, To the Better Ones and Holes, offering up a moment of vulnerability, but also demonstrating their trust and connection with the audience.

Lead singer Torquil Campbell was also able to connect with the audience in a slightly different way, showing his jovial mood by kindly requesting that an audience member “pass the spliff” before playing the aforementioned To the Better Ones. Between moments like this and personal commentary about the heroes of Occupy Wall Street, it was clear that spirits were high and a genuine love for New York existed on this beautiful Brooklyn night.

I recorded this set using a pair of Schoeps MK41 hypercardioid microphones clamped to the center balcony railing. The samples I have chosen include Set Yourself on Fire, the self-titled track from their 2004 album, and my personal favorite Elevator Love Letter, a fitting tribute to our metropolis.

Atlas Sound: December 18, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On Sunday night at Bowery Ballroom, Atlas Sound performed damned near the perfect concert. This was a performer of immense talents playing nearly two hours of superb music — much of it from his acclaimed new album — at the City’s best sounding venue. We make no secret of our admiration for Bradford Cox on this site, but this was Bradford at a level of excellence that we had not previously witnessed. Over the last two years, we’ve seen the development of the Parallax material in a live setting, from the Bell House in early 2010 to St. Cecelia’s Church last Summer. But what elevated this Bowery show above the rest was not just the final polish on a finished and released album, but the near flawless level of proficiency with which Bradford performed. The Parallax numbers (nine of the twelve songs were played) were stretched out and allowed to breath, while Bradford developed looping tracks that were faithful to the album’s theme. For instance, the title track which times at less than three minutes on the album, spanned over seven minutes live — a purposeful and focused seven minutes. The song transitions were natural and did not sound awkward or forced at all, and even in the few tracks where he did not loop, Bradford sounded confident and comfortable. “Mona Lisa”, which is arguably the most “pop” track on the album became a sweet optimistic folk song live, and we are streaming it below. We would have been satisfied with the 75 minutes of the main set, but he returned and played over thirty minutes of encore material, which included two extended songs to end the set. With what Bradford had just given the audience, a little bit of indulgence was not only acceptable, but welcome.

I recorded this set from our standard balcony position at this venue with the four microphone rig and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

My Morning Jacket took their impressive stage show to Madison Square Garden last night, demonstrating again how a band that works hard, plays tight and writes compelling songs can achieve large-scale success without much in the way of conventional marketing. It had been a while since I last saw MMJ- I think my last check-in with them was some time in the last decade at Irving Plaza. Since then they’ve gone from a mid-tier band straddling the indie and jam-band divide to a full-fledged juggernaut, a latter-day Phish for the less-tie-dyed set. It’s easy to see how this band can both inspire the more jam-band-focused taper community as well as garner positive notice from sites like Pitchfork. While we are the only folks recording at most shows we attend, this night there were several other crews in attendance. It’s not hard to understand why – with sprawling solos, complex arrangements, and quiet solo moments, MMJ shows practically cry out for being recorded. If you’re going to be an arena band, you have to embrace it, and MMJ delivers a large-scale rock n’ roll party, with a light show that could hold its own with any band in America. The folks in the seats stood throughout the set, while the massive open floor was packed with hand-waving fans. The two-and-a-half hour set boasted many of the band’s big numbers, including a smoking “Mahgeetah”. The show closed with some true holiday cheer in the form of a faithful rendition of the Bing Crosby classic, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”. The members of MMJ are no doubt looking forward to being home for Christmas themselves, as this show marked the end of their current tour.

I recorded this set in the raised seated section behind the soundboard area, in the center, with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones to reject unwanted sound. While not as good as the recordings we feature from smaller venues, it is a fine capture of the evening. Enjoy!
