If the third night of Yo La Tengo‘s annual Hanukkah celebration at Maxwell’s did not have the big name guests as in previous nights and years, our hosts more than made up for the deficit with a smoking ninety-minute set that alternated between quiet lithe numbers and absolute shredding. Yo La Tengo were joined for the entire set by the superb guitarist Smokey Hormel. His contributions to the set were tasty and appropriate. The highlights of the set (there were many) include the Dylan cover of “I Wanna Be Your Lover”, Neil Diamond’s (via the Monkees) classic “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You” and the closer — a fourteen minute maniacal version of “I Heard You Looking”.

The sound quality in the venue was mixed to perfection. We recorded from the prime location in this venue, and the quality of this recording is really excellent. We could not be happier with this capture. Enjoy!

News: We learned last night that Antietam will open for YLT at the December 25th show, and that the actor Tim Roth will also appear (for a spoken word piece) later in the week — likely on Saturday December 27. We will return to record on Saturday.

Last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, we decided to get among the crazy throngs on the floor at the Of Montreal show. While it was certainly comfortable up in the balcony at Roseland, we must admit to a bit of envy when the crowd on the floor erupted in unison at various points of the amazing Of Montreal show in October. The Brooklyn crowd did not let us down — bumping and dancing throughout the first half of the two-hour show. As the twenty-seven song set worked into its second hour, the floor began to empty a bit, so that by the set-closing “Kongsvinger”, all that remained were the diehards, most of whom by then were covered in red paint. As in October, we were treated to a cover song as the show-closing number, this time the more sedate Tom Petty classic “American Girl”. In terms of the stage show, this was a bit of a scaled-down affair (no horse or hanging), but the ninja crew were very active and Kevin still made countless costume changes.

As we recorded with our mobile unit from the floor, this recording has an “authentic” in-the-crowd feel to it. Additionally, the sound in the venue was at times saturated and muddy. With those caveats, we are nevertheless pleased with the results. Enjoy!

A year ago we were both excited and impressed by Pylon’s performance at Mercury Lounge. Last night, the Athens legends returned to NYC and performed a looser but equally impressive set. Pylon have performed only a few times this year, but retain their signature sound, quirky energy, and most importantly a unique sense of rhythm. The Knitting Factory offered the band a more intimate setting, and with the crowd consisting of mostly WNYU deejays young and old — a crowd of knowledgeable and attentive fans — Pylon thrived on the vibe.

We recorded from the center riser of the balcony, and as the house board was mixed by Pylon’s veteran local sound tech, the mix in the room was superb. We are very pleased with the sound quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Our experience last night at the Butthole Surfers show at Warsaw in Brooklyn did not start off so well. After twenty minutes in an unnecessary line in the freezing cold, and the inevitable difficulty of explaining taping equipment to the Polish-speaking security guard at the door, we finally made it into the venue. Fortunately, when we set up in front of the board, we were met with open arms including an extremely nice welcome from the venue manager (who I believe was named Alan). Once we warmed up, the entire experience became positive. When the Buttholes bounded on stage and began their set in earnest, all was right in the world. The middle-aged alterna-punk crowd has not aged all that badly, and we were extremely happy to chat with a series of old school fans who approached the stand to chat about the old days. My Buttholes experience goes back to an amazing night at the old Peppermint Lounge in August of 1984, before I returned for senior year of college, and last night felt very much like that night 24 years ago.

The set itself was a furious run through the band’s career work, with a few old chestnuts thrown in from each of the early albums for the hardcore fans. As Gibby chatted amiably with the crowd, with good vibes spread around, all was forgotten from the July fiasco at Webster Hall. Ninety minutes and 24 songs later, the old punks left Warsaw to battle the cold — this time with a smile instead of a grimace.

We recorded from directly in front of the soundboard. The sound quality in the venue was quite good considering how difficult it is to maintain separation and avoid distortion with this music. As a result, we are pleasantly surprised at the high quality of this capture. Enjoy!

We have read much about Crystal Stilts over the last couple of years, but by happenstance we had not seen them live until last Sunday night at Bowery. Crystal Stilts are currently on tour with Love Is All, and this was their hometown show — with a large and supportive crowd. The live performance of their reverb-heavy 60’s-influenced garage rock is really quite compelling. The guitar work which is somewhat muffled by the authentic feel of the mix on their new CD Alight of Night literally comes to “life” in the live setting and as a result the songs are brighter and more organic. Singer Brad Hargett provides the standard tenor-drone for this genre, but live adds a few grunts and groans with a little Ian Curtis thrown in for taste. The ubiquitous percussionist Frankie Rose has the minimalist drumming style down to an art. At the end of the Crystal Stilts set, there were quite a few well-deserved calls for an encore.

We recorded this set from the same location at the Love Is All set and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

When we posted a preview of New Orleans’ Hurray For The Riff Raff and their upcoming shows in NYC, we expected that we would enjoy the show based up on the quality of their new CD It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You. On Monday night at Pianos, Hurray For The Riff Raff exceeded all of our high expectations. Led by Alynda Lee’s strong vocals and relaxed stage presence, this quartet contains all talented multi-instrumentalists and a series of excellent songs. Frankly, we were quite surprised to see a packed house in Pianos for an out-of-town indie band, but the crowd’s enthusiasm was well rewarded with a superb 40 minute set including an encore.

We recorded from in front of the soundboard with the microphone pole at maximum height. As the band performs primarily acoustic instruments, there can be heard room noise at times. Overall, however, this is an excellent authentic “room recording”. Enjoy!

We have seen Sweden’s Love Is All five times this year, in every setting from someone’s basement to the cavernous Roseland Ballroom — and yet no matter the size of the crowd, the band has delivered an excellent set. With the release of the on-everyone’s-best-of-2008-list A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night (What’s Your Rupture?), we do not expect to see many more “basement” shows, but more likely Love Is All will perform in venues like Bowery Ballroom as they did in June and again Sunday night.

On Sunday, Love Is All performed another superb set, added a new number (on the written setlist as “NYA”) and stretched out to over 40 minutes for the first time this year. We recorded from the balcony rail next to the soundboard and this capture is the highest quality recording of the four Love Is All recordings on this site. Enjoy!

Treasure is a fairly new trio from Brooklyn, although all three members are veterans of the local music scene — vocalist Amanda Tomme performed most recently with The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Caleb Lindskoog plays guitar with local rockers The Silver State, and Ryan Trott has played with the folk band Hologram. Treasure is built around the emotive and throaty vocals of Tomme, the full-bodied chord work of Lindskoog and tasteful and appropriate percussion by Trott. Each member compliments the others with grace, and as a result the songs are well balanced, richly melodic and melancholic without being gloomy. The new Treasure CD is called Tea Parties and is available in individually hand-painted 300 limited numbered copies.

We captured Treasure‘s outstanding recent live performance at Glasslands. The show was recorded from the video-projection desk in the front of the balcony and the sound quality is excellent. Amanda’s vocals were originally mixed low, but that deficiency was corrected quickly. Enjoy!

On the final night of their winter tour in support of the superb new CD Broken Hymns, Limbs And Skin, Brooklyn’s O’Death returned home. As the band ripped through a seventy-minute set of material old and new, the floor of the Bowery Ballroom literally bounced with the energy of a crowd dancing and slamming to O’Death‘s unique approach to gothic country punk. We focused much of the time on the impressive electric banjo work of Gabe Darling, but in reality each member of the talented quintet could have been centerstage at any point in the evening.

O’Death will be off the road for the remainder of the year, but return to touring in February with a run through the South and then an extensive tour through Europe. The unbridled energy of this band guarantees that each show will truly be a memorable experience. The Bowery last night was no exception.

We recorded with our best mobile rig from the prime location in this venue. The results are a faithful capture of the energy of this excellent show. Enjoy!
