Sannhet: March 27, 2015 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its fair to say that we generally have pretty similar tastes among the various members of the NYCTaper crew, but there are definite divergent viewpoints on different musical genres. So while its not uncommon that we’ll all agree to the excellence of a particular artist, there are generally degrees of interest among us. So its somewhat rare when we’re all in universal agreement that a band is simply awesome. When acidjack recorded Sannhet exactly a month earlier than this past Friday’s show at Saint Vitus it brought a smile to my face when I read his review where he referred to the band as “phenomenally good”, confirming my exact reaction from as long as two years ago.

This Saint Vitus show was the release party for Sannhet’s new album Revionist (Flenser Records) which has received the kind of universal acclaim that leads to best-of-year type album acknowledgement when the time comes. The trio’s ability to capture a level of intensity within four to five minute song bursts is really quite remarkable and the live show is accompanied by compelling screen projections that add to the mood — a silent crowd during the music that erupted at song breaks and at the end of the set. Sannhet has been grouped with metal, black metal and post-metal bands from its outset but the band is far more than a simple label these days. This is almost orchestral rock music that sets a theme and then proceeds to guide the listener trance-like through all of the emotional aspects of the song’s journey. Its truly an experience not to be missed and we expect that Saint Vitus will soon be too small a room for Sannhet as their influence grows. The band is currently on an East Coast and Midwest tour and the next scheduled NYC show is at Music Hall of Williamsburg opening for Viet Cong on June 14.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed provided by house FOH Tim. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Wand: Mercury Lounge 2015 + SXSW 2015 + Webster Hall 2014 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Add Wand to the list of bands best realized as a live act. Not to disrespect their two most recent albums, this year’s Golem and last year’s Ganglion Reef, both fine efforts in the lazily-named “garage-psych” canon that add the band’s wizards-and-warlocks imagery to the mix of guitar pyrotechnics and punk urgency that characterize, to some degree, the efforts of regular tourmate Ty Segall and others. Heard in the vacuum of headphones or home speakers, alone, it’s too easy to lump them in with the other bands whose names you know and move on.

But live, there are clearer nods to the band’s actual influences: Rainbow, T. Rex, Bowie, early period Zeppelin — some of the bands that influenced the much-derided L.A. “glam” scene of the 1980s. Wand owe a very much larger debt to these bands than their contemporaries, and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, the glammy sensibility Wand brings to the table serves as a reminder that the wholesale death of the L.A. scene at the hands of grunge was a bit of a throwing out of the baby with the bathwater. If those seventies touchstones can be blamed for giving us Poison and Warrant, it’s worth remembering that the better attitudes they embodied were being unafraid to have style or show off how well you can play, and to make each performance a true performance. Wand may not wear makeup or tight clothing, but their show brings with it some of that theatrical feel that makes them stand out. That’s what made them darlings at South By Southwest, where one of us captured their burner of a set at the Panache Booking-sponsored Hotel Vegas show and deemed it the best thing he saw all festival.

We’ll let you judge for yourself, with a three-fer of Wand shows in a range of situations. There’s that SXSW show and a September 2014 show opening for Ty Segall at Webster Hall, together with the most recent appearance by the band in NYC, an hourlong headlining gig at Mercury Lounge. I caught the Mercury show, and was taken straight away by the band’s command of the stage. Songs from their two albums enjoyed a range of reinterpretations and rocked-out treatments, while frontman Cory Thomas Hanson gave us the kind of vocal performance we’re just not used to hearing anymore. I appreciated that amidst the pounding — and the band also comes across much heavier and less spacey live than on record — the band slowed things down from time to time, such as when they lead us into the cosmic swirl of “Melted Rope.” Each of these three shows ends on the same number, the band’s most reliable “jam” song “Generator Larping”, which is as sure a recipe for a great end to the night as anything I’ve heard this year.

These sets are all combinations of soundboard feeds with high-quality audience microphones, and each of them is of excellent quality. Enjoy!

Tigue: March 11, 2015 Secret Project Robot – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Tigue is the Brooklyn-based percussion trio composed of Ohio transplants Matt Evans, Amy Garapic, and Carson Moody. While the whole trio has participated in Kid Millions’ Man Forever project, each member also has some impressive extracurricular affiliations that include—among many others—Evans and Moody with Ensemble Signal, and Garapic with So Percussion and David Byrne. Tigue have recently completed their first LP, Peaks, which was funded via a successful Kickstarter campaign. That record is still forthcoming, but with Kid Millions producing and guest spots from Ira Kaplan and James McNew of Yo La Tengo, the impending release of Peaks is highly anticipated.

Opening for the duo of Kid Millions and Chris Brokaw at Secret Project Robot, Tigue gave us a preview of what to expect to hear on Peaks. For those new to Tigue, like I was, the songs are perhaps surprisingly pop-oriented—certainly not the classical or esoteric sounds that hearing the phrase “percussion ensemble” might conjure. Instead, it’s something like percussive drone-pop, highly accessible and engaging. Their set is performed entirely as a single piece with subtle divisions between the songs, best understood as part of a highly evolved whole rather than by its individual elements. And surely, you could say the same thing about the performers who are clearly highly tuned to each other’s frequencies. I can only expect and hope that once I hear the album proper, I’ll be let in on the full scope of Tigue’s craft. After the dramatic transition between “I Don’t Think You’re Listening” and closer “Ripped,” you’ll no doubt hear the yelp of a passionate audience member finally unable to contain his enthusiasm. In response to that guy: I couldn’t agree more.

I recorded this set with the AKGs set up approximately in the center of the room and pointed at the stacks. The sound and performance are both excellent. Enjoy!

Pile: March 19, 2015 Longbranch Inn – Impose SXSW – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Thursday was my first day of SXSW this year and it was a very long day. I awoke at the crack of dawn in NYC and flew to Austin arriving around 1pm local time. The afternoon was filled with errands, a few beers, some local cuisine and then it was time to get to the Impose Magazine “Imposition” show at the Longbranch Inn on East 11th. The roster for this night was filled with fake names — bands that due to silly contractual games couldn’t be named until after playing the “official” shows on the west side of town. It was not long after we arrived that the actual bill for the night was announced and it was as we expected from these Impose shows, a fine list of current up and comers. The anchor for the night was Boston’s Pile, a band that’s not exactly new but who are finally getting the attention they deserve. By the time the band took the stage it was after 1:30 am and I was pushing 24 straight hours awake — but these guys gave me a much needed jolt of energy.

Pile began in 2009 began as Rick Maguire’s solo project before he recruited a band to tour. The band’s shows have become legendary in the Boston DIY scene, as Pile has become what’s been described as “your favorite band’s favorite band”. The band’s new album You’re Better Than This (Exploding In Sound Records) was released earlier this month. The album has its ferocious and gentle sides, a loud-soft-loud dynamic that exhibits influences that include post-punk, noise rock, and even anti-folk. I hear everything from the Minutemen through Built To Spill and of course their hometown predecessors Mission of Burma. For this short SXSW set, this live version of Pile was less about the “soft” and more about the straight ahead punk which was fine with us. The set began with three straight songs from You’re Better, and we’re streaming “The World is Your Motel” which absolutely raged. Pile is now on an extensive tour (dates here), which comes to NYC for an April 28 show at Baby’s All Right. This is a much recommended show from our viewpoint.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Moon Duo: March 10, 2015 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada have been making music as Moon Duo for a while now, churning out consistent albums on Sacred Bones (and earlier, Woodsist) that have delighted both Wooden Shjips fans and those who were drawn to the more organ-driven sound led by Yamada. With Shadow of the Sun, and this latest tour, the band has swung a bit more to the rock side of the things, bringing on drummer John Jeffrey, who appeared on the Live in Ravenna album as well. If Shadow represents yet another refinement rather than a quantum leap, the addition of the live drumming is noticeable, and even more so in the actual concert space — compare this set, for example, with the set I recorded in 2010.

Fans of the Ravenna live set would agree that this set at Rough Trade NYC built on some of the good things you can see there, with the live drums adding viscosity and punch to the band’s hypnotic flow. The set consisted of just under half-Shadow of the Sun material. “Wilding” made for as good a kickoff for the live set as it did for the album, while “Thieves” gave Ripley an opportunity for a hardcore guitar freakout. The trio were barely visible most of the time, shrouded by an electric light show that matched the pace and vibe of the setlist. The seventy minutes ended on a high note, with an extended “Set It On Fire” that, by the time it ended, made you feel almost as if you’d woken from a dream. This band can do that to you.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones mounted inside the soundboard cage, together with engineer Nick Cameron. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Tom Carter / Barry Weisblat Duo: February 24, 2015 FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The guitarist Tom Carter has made a couple of appearances on this site, being one of this city’s most exciting innovators on the instrument. While Carter was already known for his eclectic tastes, both as a solo act and with Charalambides, this combination of Carter and the multi-instrumentalist Barry Weisblat took things further into the out realm. The two appeared at last month’s installment of the “Music From NY Underground: On the Way Out” event held monthly at Freddy’s Bar in Park Slope, and produced an improvisational composition worthy of that title. Weisblat arrived armed with a host of obscure devices able to create a host of tones and textures, to which Carter overlaid his signature guitar sound. The end result was a thought-provoking, almost cinematic drone sequence that was revelatory to see created, but will reward patient repeat listening even more. We are excited to have been able to witness and capture this unique musical interaction, and hope you feel the same.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the ORTF configuration near the performers, together with a feed from the small PA system mixer. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker: March 15, 2015 Baby’s All Right

There are many good singers, many more good writers of songs. More than enough to fill entire festivals with them year-round, to stuff streaming sites with more than anyone can listen to. But among that vast number, there are a tiny few in whom you can sense that something else, that spark, that undergirding realness, that makes their performance more than just-singing or just-playing-guitar. To see Ryley Walker perform is to experience a man singing to somewhere else, sending sound out to and for souls long since gone. That voice, that sound of his, the ecstatic yelps, those long, punch-drunk runs, threatening to split apart but never quite doing it, is singular. It may resonate with you, or it may not, but if it doesn’t, the thing missing in the equation is what you’re putting into it, not him.

This show at Baby’s All Right, our fourth time seeing Ryley in the last twelve months, finds him at an interesting point. Primrose Green, his tour-de-force second record, releases at month end, and has already found itself hailed in all the right places, turning Walker into a critical darling seemingly overnight. He’ll be at this summer’s Pitchfork Festival, at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival, at Levitation in Vancouver, and any number of other places in the U.S. and Europe where of-the-moment acts can be seen. It’s hard to know what the effect of the crowds might be on this man, this music that requires him to give so much of himself emotionally every night. There are too many tales about how this part of the music world has split women and men in half.

But our best evidence about Ryley’s part of this story is this night at Baby’s All Right, in a jammed show room on a Sunday night. The 38 minutes of this set consist of just four songs, played this time with a band consisting of Ryley’s Chicago-based musician colleagues on second guitar, upright bass, and keys (over half of the band that we first saw perform in Raleigh back in September). The foursome appeared, as far as I know, only in Chicago and at this New York date — D.C. two nights before was a threesome (minus upright bass), as was Philadelphia just before the Brooklyn show — but their playing reminds you how well they know this material. The band weaved around Ryley’s lead as they reinterpreted Primrose Green songs that most of these fans probably haven’t heard original versions of yet on record. These weren’t idle-minded jams, either, but successful experiments, one after the other, from the new “Funny Thing She Said”, to tour staple “Summer Dress”, to “Primrose Green” to Ryley’s go-to cover song of late, Van Morrison’s “Fair Play” from Veedon Fleece. Shaved, hair clipped, wearing a collar and sweater that even had Ryley laughing at himself, Walker played with all the intensity he’s mustered every time we’ve seen him, but there was a new assuredness there, too, an ability to pull back just when he needed to. These thirty-eight minutes were like all of his sets I have seen: a thing of beauty, something memorable, something unique.

If you go to see one new artist this year because you read about them on this site, I hope Ryley Walker is the one. Nobody, not even him, knows where his story is headed. But this set proved once again where he deserves to be.

Baby’s All Right engineer Harrison Fore recorded and mixed this set live; I mixed this and the house-installed audience mics and mastered the recording in post. The sound quality is outstanding, equal to the quality of the performer you’re listening to. Enjoy.

Spectre Folk: March 15, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from Pete Nolan’s Spectre Folk. But with a new 7” out on New Images last year and Magik Markers on hiatus while Elisa Ambrogio tours her solo LP, now is the perfect moment for Nolan to reactivate his project. This past Sunday, Spectre Folk emerged for a late afternoon matinee at Trans-Pecos in an extended full-band lineup augmenting Nolan with Peter Meehan on guitar, Aaron Mullan on bass, and Steve Shelley and James Canty doubling up on drums. Like most Spectre Folk shows I’ve seen, this one is held together with duct tape, threatening to come untethered at any moment. But it never does, and the looseness of the approach is only endearing as the band relies on the chemistry between the players, feeling their way through a song rather than adhering to rote structure.

The band opens with “Mothership,” off their recent 7”, that song extending over both sides of the 7” and totaling around twelve minutes in its recorded form. Here it’s a bit leaner but retains the jammy nature of the original. “Blowing Tornadoes,” “Coke,” and “Please Don’t” appear to be new songs, while Spectre Folk staples “Sat Around,” “The Blackest Medicine,” and “Keep Your Teeth Clean” are off Compass, Blanket, Lantern, Mojo and the 2011 Woodsist EP, The Blackest Medicine, Part II. Spectre Folk shows are always a welcome event, but seeing these tracks fleshed out by the full band is an added bonus and I hope the appearance of new material means we’ll be seeing more of this lineup soon.

While there are currently no further scheduled Spectre Folk dates, you can catch Magik Markers at Cafe Nine in New Haven on April 30th.

I recorded this set with the mics set up at the stage in a 90 degree spread plus a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The left mic captures Nolan’s guitar and Canty’s drums while the right mic captures Meehan’s guitar and Mullan’s bass, with Shelley’s drums in the center. In post-production I cross-faded the guitars slightly to sound more central, while retaining the overall stereo sound of the recording. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Alejandro Escovedo: March 6, 2015 Capitol Theatre, Port Chester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It is not hyperbole to say that Alejandro Escovedo is an American treasure. The authenticity and intensity of his songwriting abilities have produced a forty-year body of work that places him among the very upper echelon of his era’s artists. It is perhaps the greatest acknowledgement of the quality of an artist when other artists cover the material, and for Escovedo’s work this happens so often that a two-CD tribute called Por Vida was released in 2004 featuring a veritable who’s-who of the best alt-country and americana artists. My own personal experience was seeing Joe Ely cover Escovedo at the Bowery Ballroom in the late 90’s, playing (what else) “Down in the Bowery”. It was a stunning rendition that gave great tribute to his friend — Ely and Alejandro have toured together several times.

You can tell a lot about the quality of artist through their friends. And with Escovedo, this time around he’s on tour with Los Lobos — artists who have also toured together many times over the years. When this tour came through the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester a couple of weeks back, it was truly a show to catch. We arrived early to make sure not to miss any of Alejandro’s set, which began at a very prompt 8:10pm. Playing acoustic guitar accompanied only by superb violinst Warren Hood (the son of another Escovedo friend Champ Hood), this was the stripped-down and intimate Alejandro set, even given the size of the venue. As he has done in recent tours, Escovedo’s set was a career retrospective, accompanied by song introductions where he talked about his time in The Nuns, with Rank and File, and finally his personal history. It was a thoroughly enjoyable hour-long set and convinced me that we need more Alejandro Escovedo on NYCTaper in the future. Alejandro will be hosting his annual SXSW shows in Austin this coming weekend, dates and information here.

I recorded this set in the same fashion as the Los Lobos set posted earlier and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

moe.: March 13, 2015 Best Buy Theatre – Flac/MP3/Streaming Full Show

Last month we took a look back at some 1990’s classic moe. in tribute to our fallen friend. We have a lot of good memories from that period in moe.’s history, but rest assured they are still a very active and compelling live act. On Friday at the Best Buy Theatre in Times Square we experienced that first hand. moe. is in NYC for three shows in celebration of their 25th year of existence, the first of which was an intimate performance at Le Poisson Rouge, but this night was the first of two nights at Best Buy and the band was clearly on. The first set was nearly ninety minutes and contained just six “songs” — but plenty of outstanding jam sequences and extended work on some of their most classic material. “Meat” has always been a highlight song for me and this set-closing version was one for the ages. Al Schnier in particular was manic during the climax of the song and ended the set on a great high note. moe’s second set started with a very apt song, their classic tribute to “New York City”, played obviously as a dedication to the location of the show but also I suspect as a tribute to Eric and his wife who often requested this number. After a run through some of their newer songs, moe.’s second set ended with a lengthy and peak segue performance of “Akimbo” into “Rebubula”, which began with some nice interplay between the guitars that hinted several times at the Grateful Dead’s “Playing in the Band”. After an extended encore break, the band returned for an exceptional “The Road” before bidding goodnight. The band plays again at Best Buy tonight, and the tour continues through the Midwest and South, dates here. We will be catching up with moe. again at Mountain Jam in June.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards from a very advantageous location in a very well placed taper’s section — about 40 feet back and centered on the floor. I used hi and lo’s V3 pre-amp which really added some nice color to this prime Schoeps capture of a very nice sounding room. The result is a really superb recording. Enjoy!
