For fans of heavy, psychedelic, experimental and improvisational rock, the current Brooklyn and NYC scene is an embarrassment of riches. To an illustrious list that includes White Hills, The Psychic Paramount, Oneida, Naam and many others (many of whom have been featured on this site), make sure to include the Brooklyn trio Eidetic Seeing in the canon. I first caught the band in their infancy, when they opened for White Hills at Cake Shop back in 2009. At the time, I was impressed, but clearly the band was just getting started. After releasing an EP that year, they laid down the until-recently vinyl only Drink the Sunin 2011. The absence of the record from the digital realm may have kept Eidetic Seeing a bit under the radar (it’s now available on their bandcamp page, and the vinyl is still featured at local record stores like Earwax and Academy), but they aren’t likely to stay that way for long.

This show at Public Assembly turned out to be an extra-special performance, as the band ran freeform through forty-five minutes of all-new material that they hope to lay down in the studio in the coming months. Several of these songs were newly-rehearsed, giving them a raw, exciting quality and giving the band members a chance to expand upon their ideas in real time. Mostly devoid of lyrics, at least for now, new songs like “Untitler” expand upon and extend the band’s palette, adding free jazz flourishes to guitarist Sean Forleza, drummer Paul Feitzinger, and bassist Danilo Randjic-Coleman’s dense, spaced-out stew. The songs flowed seamlessly from one to the next, with the highlight coming with the mid-set sequence of “Ashplant Blues” and “White Flight”, which gave Forleza a few vocal turns. Keep an eye on the band’s website for future shows in Brooklyn and beyond. These guys will melt your face if given the chance.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones in an optimal spot in the venue, coupled with a light amount of soundboard feed provided by the Public Assembly engineer, Theo. The house mix and room sound in the Public Assembly was outstanding on this night, and it is reflected in this recording. Enjoy!

Wussy: August 11, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

Wussy, like their Cincinnati brethren and fellow NYCTaper favorites Heartless Bastards, are one of those hardworking, unpretentious, straight-up-rocking bands that real music fans should always pull for. Unlike the unabshed classic rock of the Bastards, Wussy’s sound is more reminiscent of early-80s indie acts like the Bongos, with a rawer sound and accented with a light country twang. Despite being what no lesser critic than Robert Christgau called “the best band in America”, they remain an open secret among music fans. Meaning, when they throw a Sunday night early show at Mercury Lounge like this one, they’ve got a line snaking down the block before doors. And half the people in that line were wondering aloud at why the band isn’t more popular. There’s no getting past it, Wussy aren’t an act built around image or gimmicks; I don’t know this for a fact, but I’m betting their t-shirt sales aren’t what they could be (being a dude wearing a shirt that says “Wussy” may not be a winner). What Wussy is about is delivering the best show possible, having a fan-first attitude, and writing song after song with what Christgau himself called “Beatles/Stones consistency”.  This band suffered and sweated to make it to this Mercury Lounge show, in a van without A/C, which on this particular day, coming from just about anywhere, was enough torture to make you question their sanity, but not their rock n’ roll bona fides. (You can hear the story at the beginning of “Funeral Dress”, streaming below).  What we got was a set that spanned their records, kicking off with the title track from Funeral Dress, the album that started it all. Vocalists Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker sounded raw and right on this night, and despite a trying day, they gave the packed early evening house a hell of a time.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed provided by Kevin, the head engineer at Mercury.  As with most of our recordings from the venue, this one is outstanding. Enjoy!

BRONCHO, from Oklahoma, play a kind of nonchalant, grimy garage punk that might be more closely aligned with Bushwick or San Francisco. Theirs is a sound that is easily digested, infinitely catchy, and tailored perfectly to the limited attention spans of well air-conditioned summer crowds. This night at Glasslands gave the band an opportunity to run rapid-fire through another after another of two-minute burners, each with a ready-made hook and a sarcastic wit. Songs like “I Don’t Really Want to be Social”, “Try Me Out Sometime” and “Can’t Get Past the Lips” were among the highlights of this set, which focused on material from the band’s 2011 debut, Can’t Get Past the Lips. This was a high-energy set start to finish, punctuated by the yelps of lead vocalist Ryan Lindsey. Summer’s the perfect season to wrap your ears around some BRONCHO, and they’re swinging through the Midwest and California for the rest of summer, followed by the south in October, so if you’re in the path of their tour, check it out!

I recorded this set with our house rig at Glasslands, a Studio Projects LSD2 large diaphragm microphone and a soundboard feed from Jeremy, the engineer at Glasslands. The result gives you all the high-energy feeling of being there. Enjoy!

Pujol: March 15, 2012 SXSW at Longbranch Inn Impose Party – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Pujol announced today a show in NYC on October 11, 2012 at Mercury Lounge. We were fortunate to have captured a live performance of Pujol at SXSW in March, at the Impose Magazine party “Imposition” at the Longbranch Inn. Pujol is the recording project of Daniel Pujol from Nashville TN, and at SXSW the live band was a trio. Their set at Imposition was one of the most impressive of the bands that I had not previously seen. This was unselfconscious power punk with fine musicianship but which didn’t take itself too seriously. In the interim, Pujol has released their first proper album UNITED STATES OF BEING (Saddle Creek Records), and this set featured four numbers from the new record among a set of seven songs. We’re streaming “KEEPER Of ATLANTIS”, an older song that opened the set with a bang.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040s set up at the rear of the room and mixed with a board feed. Other than the mumble of crowd chatter apparent in between songs, this is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Night Beats: August 6, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

Seattle’s Night Beats keep it simple. With a sound whose most obvious reference points are Roky Erickson-style Texas psych and garage rock, the three piece’s no-bullshit live show has gained an ever-increasing following. A look at who they’ve toured with – bands like the Black Lips, Black Angels, the Strange Boys and even Roky himself – tells their story pretty accurately. This show at Knitting Factory may have been on a Monday, but that didn’t slow down the dancing or thin out the crowd, who got to enjoy a very strong bill all night long (openers MMoss and K-Holes similarly killed it). The band continue to tour behind their 2011 self-titled debut LP on Trouble In Mind records, and this set featured a lot of it, including their current single, “Puppet On A String”.  Luckily, the band also delved into what there is of a “back catalog”, in this case the 2010 H-Bomb EP, including that track as well as one of my favorites “They Came In Through the Window”. I’m pretty sure I heard some new songs (or at least, ones I couldn’t identify from the EP and album) as well. Though similar in sound, Night Beats eschewed the onstage antics some of their brethren like the Black Lips, which made for fewer flying bodies and beer cans, but one hell of a show.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from Rob, the engineer at the Knitting Factory.  In true garage band form, the sound is raw, but an excellent representation of the night and a great listen. Enjoy!

The War On Drugs: July 21, 2012 Mulcahy’s Wantagh NY – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Shine A Light Music Festival took place a few weeks back, and we’ve already posted the Luna reunion (here). As our regular readers are aware, The War On Drugs is one of my favorite current bands. The addition of this set to the site is by no means an afterthought, but the result of a discovery. Due to technical problems, I had written this recording off as a non-post, but after a re-listen and re-evaluation this week, the sound quality is far above what I expected. The show was also something special. The War On Drugs arrived early at the gig and had already soundchecked by the time I got there and set up. The band was interacting and mingling with all of the members of the Tommy Brull Foundation for several hours before their set, so that by the time they took the stage The War On Drugs felt like they were playing to friends. The show contained a nice mix of their material, but also some entertaining banter, a “guest” guitarist, and even some gentle ribbing of nyctaper.

I recorded this show with the Sennheiser 8040’s on-stage and running through the snake and mixed with a board feed. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the phantom power of the mics, so this set is the straight board feed. Its not optimal for sound quality, but its certainly a good listen. Enjoy!
