Yo La Tengo: December 8, 2012 Maxwell’s (Hanukkah Night 1) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s have always been an eight-day embarrassment of riches — we’ll readily admit to being spoiled over the years with the openers, the guests, and the many special moments that we’ve been fortunate to witness and to capture. Last year, despite a serious health scare Ira played all eight shows, sometimes confined to a chair on stage. This year the obvious concern is the massive storm damage to Hoboken itself — the charity for Night 1 was the Rebuild Hoboken Relief Fund. Sometimes we forget that the centerpiece of it all, the band themselves, are really the greatest gift of all. On this first night, their set was a subdued affair but that’s not to say its wasn’t special. The opener of a fifteen-minute tribute to the city “Night Falls on Hoboken” was both poignant and intense. Yo La Tengo is releasing a new album in January, Fade on January 15, and we also saw a couple of the new songs, one a live premiere. Of course this wouldn’t be Hanukkah without at least one guest appearance and on this night it was the opener Raybeats guitarist Jody Harris who played on both the Richard Hell cover and an intense “Pass The Hatchet” that we’re streaming below. This performance of Hatchet rivals any of previous years and offered a glimpse of what can expect over the next week. Happy Hanukkah indeed!

We recorded this show in the usual manner, with microphones mounted in the front corner of the soundboard and mixed with an outstanding feed provided by longtime YLT FOH Mark and Maxwell’s house sound tech Carson. This is the first year that we’re using the new Sennheiser Cards in this room and I’m quite pleased with its handling of this small room. The results are superb. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Here at NYCTaper, we have a special place in our hearts for Dinosaur Jr. Not only do they make outstanding music and have chops second to none but they have long supported the taping community, making several appearances on this website including one of the first recordings posted here. We were particularly ecstatic when the original lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited in 2005 and have since released three superb albums. In the interim, we have done our best to capture as many of their concerts as we can but none of us grasped the full extent of what we were in for when they announced this celebratory show marking the 25th anniversary of the seminal and influential ‘You’re Living All Over Me‘ album. In addition to playing the disc in its entirety, allusions were made to many other tracks and “special friends” making an appearance. We wound up being clobbered with a setlist and guest lineup worthy of an alt/indie-rock uber fan’s wet dream: Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Frank Black from the Pixies, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Dale Crover from the Melvins, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Kyle Spence from Harvey Milk, Kurt Vile, Al Cisneros from Sleep, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Suzanne Thorpe of Mercury Rev, Don Fleming, Dante Ferrando, John Petkovic and Fred Armisen. On a night with more highlights and jaw-dropping performances than one can count, there was a wonderful interplay between all the artists and a realization by the crowd that this concert was to be savored. Thank you J, Lou and Murph for the awesome holiday gift you honored us with. It was an extraordinary way to begin drawing this year to a close.

Thanks to Dinosaur Jr.’s management and the team at Terminal 5, we were given the opportunity to set up and record from the dead-center spot towards the back of the floor. With such an ideal location, acidjack and I ran three distinctly different microphone configurations in an effort to ensure the best possible recording we could make: Milab VM-44 Links (DIN) and AKG C 414 B-XLS’s in both Blumlein and M/S configurations. The results are uniformly excellent so we are offering all three sources for download. We certainly hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!

Kurt Vile: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It is hard not to be overshadowed a bit when you have the task faced by Kurt Vile and the Violators, who opened the epic Dinosaur Jr. 25th Anniversary Show last weekend at Terminal 5. But, even facing an expectant crowd yearning for J. Mascis’ guitar shredding (and that of a slew of special guests, including Kurt himself), Vile was not to be outdone so easily.  Since we last caught one of his sets opening for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell’s last year, Kurt has continued to rack up accolades for his Matador-released Smoke Ring For My Halo and continued to improve and develop his live sound. That was on full display here, as the band’s psychedelic guitar pyrotechnics on songs like “Jesus Fever” from Halo dominated the room. The Violators on this night included a second guitarist from another Philly band and site favorite, Purling Hiss frontman Mike Polizze, who added his own unique style to this seven-song set. Getting to check out a set from Kurt Vile before an epic two-hour plus Dinosaur Jr. show was just the first of this night’s many awesome moments.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set from the floor in front of the soundboard, in a designated taping section graciously arranged for us by Dinosaur Jr. The microphones used were AKG 414s in the “mid/side” configuration, which allows the user to vary the amount of room reflections, and gave some nice clarity to the sound of this often-boomy room. Enjoy!

David Bazan (playing Pedro the Lion’s “Control”): November 15, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

David Bazan’s 2002 album Control marked what became his second concept album as a recording artist. His first full-length effort as Pedro the Lion, 2000’s Winners Never Quit, told the story of the corruption and redemption of a politician, and was a favorite of mine at the time. Despite its intensely personal lyrics, capable songwriting and obvious ambivalence toward Christianity, a particularly agenda-laden Pitchfork review savaged the record and derisively called Bazan a “Christian rocker”. Control is a dark, brooding album that tells the tale of the dissolution of a modern marriage that ends, ultimately, in murder, the downward spiral all rendered in Bazan’s mournful tones. Control did well with critics and fans. But, ten years later, how has it worn?

David Bazan is a different artist today. His struggles with alcohol – and Christianity – are in the rearview, and as he told the crowd this night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, he is a better musician.  After abandoning the Pedro moniker in 2006, he has produced two excellent solo albums under his own name that stand in their own right. This tour was designed to promote the high-quality vinyl reissues of the Pedro the Lion catalog, including Control, and tonight found David and his band (Alex Westcoat and Andy Fitts, who play on both Bazan “solo” albums) playing each of the LP’s sides with a mix of Pedro and Bazan solo tracks sandwiched in the middle. Along with getting to enjoy Control classics like “Penetration” and “Rejoice” (introduced, to close out the set, as “a bummer”), Bazan played some other favorites mid-set, including “Eating Paper” from his latest solo record, Strange Negotiations, and “When They Really Get to Know You They Will Run” from Pedro’s first album, It’s Hard to Find A Friend.  So how did Control sound ten years on?  It may be a “bummer” emotionally, but it continues to stand as a musical success.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones inside the soundboard cage, with an excellent soundboard feed mixed by the band’s touring engineer Brad Lightfoot.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Rhyton: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After their thrilling performance at the NYCTaper Northside Festival Showcase back in June, I couldn’t wait for Rhyton to hit Union Pool last week so I could see them perform songs from their latest, The Emerald Tablet.  Or at least, I assumed that would be the case, seeing that the record just dropped in September. But frontman/guitarist/other instrumentalist Dave Shuford, bassist Jimy Seitang and drummer Spencer Herbst aren’t the sort of musicians to “tour an album” or pause their creative process. So, instead of Emerald tracks, the band gave us a completely new pair of free-flowing compositions that are so new they only have working titles. These compositions are more of a piece stylistically with the band’s previous record, Rhyton, with a noisier, less Eastern-influenced feel than The Emerald Tablet. But, when you are dealing with a trio of improvisers like the Rhyton gang, it’s never correct to say anything is exactly like the past.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones from the center of the balcony, augmented by a soundboard feed from the house engineer, Doug.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

The Brooklyn band Starring, fairly new darlings of the avant garde Northern Spy label,  have made significant sonic evolutions since their 2010 release Wife of God.  With the addition of Matt Mehlan – best known for his work as Skeletons – to the already-talented roster of players, the band’s sound has moved away from their more kraut and punk-leaning earlier material toward the type of longer-form prog-psych compositions that Mehlan is known for. This year’s ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ (a keyboard’s worth of an album title), which was played almost in its entirety at this show at the Knitting Factory, places Starring most closely in tradition of great current New York bands like Oneida and Black Dice and classic acts like Neu! and Sun Ra.  You can hear the range of ideas and influences at work in the song “best”, where a driving backbeat and accompanying violin build blends with trippy organ, guitar and flute parts, and frontwoman Clara Hunter’s most obvious lyric is the borrower chorus of the Tina Turner classic, “Simply the Best”. There is a lot going on in this and most of the band’s other songs, and for fans of post-structuralism, there is almost as much to like about the mere attempt as there is about the result. That said, the night’s most accessible number, “aphonia”, which reminded me a bit of late period Battles, may have been more straightforward, but well might have been a stronger demonstration of the band’s chops. Starring is the type of band that refuses to remain static, and I’m sure by the next time I see them, there will be yet more dimensions to explore.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA200N microphones and an excellent soundboard feed by the Knit engineer, Rob.  The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Death Blues: September 6, 2012 Hopscotch Music Festival, Lincoln Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After witnessing the majesty of drummer Jon Mueller’s new project Death Blues just two nights before at Glasslands in NYC, I was ready to witness the spectacle again on the bigger stage of Raleigh, North Carolina’s Lincoln Theater for the band’s Hopscotch Music Festival debut. While this set more or less mirrored the Glasslands show note for note, the bigger room gave the performance a different, more dramatic flavor. Mueller also felt that this recording (which was done by local taper Brian Claude) gave a better representation of the band’s difficult-to-capture upright bass. Death Blues is less a “band” in many respects than an interdisciplinary music project of Mueller’s; he teams with a variety of like-minded artists to produce music that is disconnected from pop convention. The ostensible focus of Death Blues is the inevitable approach of death, which comes across in the tone and evolution of the set. The music is dark, but transporting, with tribal, haunting vocals and guitars played like percussion instruments, all led by Mueller on the drums. Death being a large and complicated subject – too great for one piece of music – Mueller and his bandmates have posted additional writings and meditations on the topic on the project’s website.

Mueller has just released the sequence you will hear on this recording as Death Blues: The Album on his bandcamp page via Hometapes and Taiga Records, with vinyl to follow in January 2013. The record, like the band’s live performances, is revelatory. Give it a spin.

This set was recorded by NC-based taper Brian Claude with Avantone CK-1 microphones from the ideal spot in the Lincoln.  The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Psychic Ills: November 9, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Psychic Ills hit the Knitting Factory a few weeks ago along with compadres Guardian Alien (recording HERE)  and Starring (recording coming soon) in preparation for the wide-ranging tour of China they have now embarked upon. By the look and sound of things, the foursome were ready to go, as they weaved together the druggy, deep grooves they have become known for under hushed lights. The band’s most recent effort, and first for Sacred Bones, Hazed Dream, was the most-represented on this night, with the band leading off with three fifths of that record’s excellent A side, including their most “poppy” (by their standards) number, “Mind Daze”. Along with the Hazed Dream material, the other half of the set touched down at various points from the band’s back catalog, with two songs from 2006’s Dins, “Diamond City” from their 2005 Mental Violence II EP, and “Way Of” from the largely misunderstood Mirror Eye joining the band’s most recent single, “Take Me With You”, which they released on a split 7-inch with Moon Duo earlier this year. While the “psychedelic rock” genre (massively broad as it now is) usually relies upon setting a mood, the Ills take things further in that direction than most, serving up the set as a more or less unified piece of music with guitar transitions instead of stage banter, substituting their songs’ evolutions and contrasts in tone and tempo for big, room-rocking singles. Expect a new record from the Ills next year, which we hope to continue with the strong style established on Hazed Dream.

Port St. Willow: October 18, 2012 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The documented connection between Port St. Willow frontman Nick Principe and childhood friend Peter Silbermann of The Antlers goes beyond their shared background. Both have a grandiosity and mournfulness to their sounds; both share a similar vocal style – a soaring falsetto that is its own instrument, at times obscuring the lyrics themselves. But where The Antlers lean more toward narrative storytelling and show a continued passion for rock dynamics, Principe is more comfortable in the realm of more obtuse, atmospheric composition. The songs on his debut record, Holiday, offer a variety of textures to plumb; some have described the record as “airy”. After catching an impressive set opening for The Antlers this summer at Glasslands, Port St. Willow was right at the top of the list of bands to play our unofficial CMJ Day show at Cake Shop, and this set delivered on the promise of that earlier experience. Principe, backed by his touring live band, played a set of six songs in a near-seamless 35-minute set. Even in mid-afternoon, the 10+ minute opener “Hollow” wowed the sizable crowd as Principe & Co. built his delicate compositions from scratch before our eyes. The recording that you have here is arguably the best quality of all that we recorded during this show, and other than a couple of spots where the vocal mic distorted during “Tourist”, it is virtually flawless. Widowspeak: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Among us, we have seen Brooklyn’s Widowspeak at least seven times in the past couple of years, including hosting them at last year’s NYCTaper CMJ Day Show. What we have seen each time is a band that keeps getting better and, most crucially, continuing to write great new songs. True to form, half of the songs played during this opening set for Woods at Music Hall of Williamsburg were new (relative to their LP), and they stood up well alongside some of the best numbers from their 2011 self-titled LP like “In the Pines”. Of the newer material, four of these songs will appear on the band’s second Captured Tracks LP, Almanac, which comes out on January 22.  I continue to be amazed at the depth added to the band’s sound by the addition of Pamela Garabano-Coolbaugh on bass, as it gives lead guitarist Robert Thomas and singer/guitarist Molly Hamilton more room to focus on their own guitar work. Sonically, Widowspeak is a moody, downbeat band, but they are clearly enjoying the ride; even if they don’t sound like it, they look like they’re having a lot of fun up there. With the band’s next NYC show scheduled for their record release date of January  22 at Mercury Lounge, we have plenty to look forward to from Widowspeak in 2013.
