Jeff Beam: June 19, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

I had not heard of Jeff Beam before receiving his gracious invitation to check out his recent Knitting Factory show in Brooklyn, but I am glad that I did. The Maine-based artist has been recording and self-releasing records since 2008, but his recent release, Be Your Own Mirror, is his most fully-realized creation yet. Although his record is a patchwork of found sounds, casio and other keyboards, and various similar flourishes, this live performance with a full band showed off a different side of Beam’s talents. The more stripped-down style brought Beam’s guitar skills to the forefront, which was all to the good as he jammed heavily on the opening number, “Congratulations On Your Latest Achievement”.  His love of 60s psychedelia and power pop is evident on many of his songs, but Beam occasionally veers into prog and folk territory as well – one thing Beam doesn’t lack for is ideas. The set closer, “Now”, is one of the strongest tracks on the new record, and evokes the 2000 Belle and Sebastian classic, “Don’t Leave the Light On Baby”.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Knitting Factory house engineer.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Soft Bullets: June 19, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Soft Bullets are a very, very new band consisting of the transatlantic (NYC and London) duo of Christopher Wall (keys, vocals) and Dan Capaldi (drums, vocals). This show at the Knitting Factory represented their first-ever U.S. gig, though you wouldn’t have known it from the level of polish and originality on display. With keys and drums only, the pair manage to make complex, dynamic songs that offer hints of Britpop, jazz, and krautrock. Wall’s vocals give an undeniable nod to Thom Yorke, but the band’s overall vibe is less dark and a bit more jazz-oriented. The band has a tremendous amount of promise, and we look forward to their future efforts.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from the Knitting Factory team.  The sound is flawless.  Enjoy!

Donora: June 26, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

[still from official Donora video]

On a summer night in Brooklyn there are few places I’d rather be than Glasslands. With their perfectly refrigerated tap and AC cranked to full blast, it’s always an easy decision to come for a night of great music. So when I saw this great indie-pop lineup with Donora headlining, I was excited.

Back in February, I had the pleasure of seeing Donora play in support of Team Genius and was impressed with the work from their 2011 EP, Boyfriends, Girlfriends. This show at Glasslands was a stop on their Friends Forever tour with fellow Pittsburgh band TeamMate and did not disappoint. Donora’s upbeat set featured many of the songs from the EP plus a brand new track Under the Lights, which made the packed crowd dust off their dancing shoes.

This recording was made with a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones positioned in our usual spot, along with a soundboard feed. We are really excited about Glasslands’ recently upgraded soundboard, and this was the very first night with the new equipment. House engineer Jeremy absolutely nailed both the live mix and soundboard feed. The recording is an even balance between the two sources and sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Amen Dunes: June 17, 2012 Glasslands and June 24, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Sacred Bones Records showcase was the last show I saw at the Northside Festival, and it was also one of the ones I anticipated the most. First, because I try to never miss a chance to see bands I like at Glasslands, and second, because it was a stellar lineup from beginning to end. Of the bands playing, Amen Dunes were one I had not seen before, but they won me over early with their hypnotic, dark sound that recalls Syd Barrett, the Velvet Underground, Suicide and 13th Floor Elevators, among others. Founder and frontman Damon McMahon has claimed that he gets nervous performing live, but you wouldn’t have known it during this confident, if too short, set. Of course, it’s unlikely that McMahon could see us any more clearly than we could see him given the huge clouds of man-made fog he played in. If nothing else, the fog gave the show even more of a narcotic vibe.

This set gave us a taste of some of McMahon’s best songs from his recent record, Through Donkey Jaw. McMahon’s songs, now produced by a three-man band, tend to be downtempo affairs, but they held this crowd rapt, especially on numbers like the opener to Donkey Jaw, “Baba Yaga”.  We were fortunate enough to catch a second, slightly longer Amen Dunes show on the following Sunday at the Knitting Factory when nyctaper saw Amen Dunes opened for another of our favorite bands, the Wooden Shjips (that recording [HERE]). McMahon is one of those artists whose integrity and brilliance you recognize instantly, and we both felt that way when we caught our respective sets.

I recorded the Glasslands set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK5 microphones; the Knitting Factory set was similarly recorded with Sennheiser MKH-8040 microphones and a soundboard feed. Both are outstanding, with excellent house mixes. The Glasslands recording favors the soundboard more, while the Knitting Factory recording favors the sound from the Sennheiser microphones.  Enjoy!

Starlight Girls: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

July 9, 2012

At this Northside Festival day show meant to showcase four of the “8 Bands You Need to Hear” (as determined by the L Magazine), Starlight Girls drew a crowd. As the first act on the bill, taking the stage during what most festivalgoers probably thought of as “recovery time” could have been a challenge. But by about the middle of  “Try”, the third song in their set, the Spike Hill show room was packed. The band serves up an addictive sound that references lounge music, 60s girl groups, soul and lo-fi indie rock – a perfect antidote to a hung over afternoon. The show began on a mellow note, but quickly ramped up the energy as the crowd (and the band’s confidence) grew. By the time the band tore into “Lion In A Cage,” my favorite number of the day, they had won over all doubters. I was also a big fan of one of the earlier, more lounge-y numbers, “$9,000,000” in particular.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones and a soundboard feed from the Spike Hill engineer.  The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thanks to Spike Hill and Starlight Girls.

Ski Lodge: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Ski Lodge are the perfect band to write about on a day when temperatures in NYC are set to hit around 100 degrees. Contrary to the name, they are a summer band, inspired by frontman Andrew Marr’s trip to a Florida beach. Chosen by the L Magazine as one of their “8 Bands You Need to Hear“, this daytime showcase at Spike Hill during the Northside Festival showcased four of such acts, with Ski Lodge the final act on the bill. It wasn’t hard to figure out where the L folks were coming from; Marr and his band make surf-inspired pop insta-classics (like “A Game”, streaming below) that are delivered with understated confidence. The sizable crowd for this day show – on another scorchingly hot day, incidentally – attested to the appeal of the band and its style. I won’t be surprised if Ski Lodge quickly finds favor with fans of acts like Surfer Blood, The Smiths, Vampire Weekend and Beach Fossils, among others. Marr is a trained classical pianist, and has a classic, crooner-style vocal that helps define the band’s laid-back aesthetic. The band currently has a four-song EP out on Dovecote Records, but expect a full-length LP sometime this year.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a stereo soundboard feed provided by the house engineer at Spike Hill. The house mix and overall room sounded excellent, and this recording is a reflection of that. Enjoy!

Hallelujah the Hills: June 23, 2012 Rock Shop – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Among my favorite albums from this spring is Hallelujah the Hills’ most recent release No One Knows What Happens Next and I was delighted to see they were making a stop at Brooklyn’s Rock Shop on their current tour. It’s hard to pinpoint the Hills’ sound, which ranges from easy-going, sophisticated folk to a powerful rock groove. The far reaches of their musicianship has made their recent release one of my favorite albums to listen to, particularly on the walk to work while I prepare for the day ahead, so I was really looking forward to this Saturday night performance at a great Brooklyn venue.

For fifty minutes, the band filled the small stage and played a balanced set of songs between their new album and the 2007 album Collective Psychosis Begone. Leading with their self-titled song, they quickly featured group vocals and revisited this theme on a personal favorite “The Crux of the Cameraman”. Obviously, the talents of band members Brian Rutledge on horns and David Bentley on cello are a highlight and make a delicate song like “Care to Collapse” or “Hungry Ghost Extraordinaire” among the most memorable and recognizable songs, both from the album and live. The band, along with the soothing vocals of singer Ryan Walsh, certainly made the most of the venue’s intimate settings and left me with that same great feeling I get on my morning walk.

I recorded the band using a pair of Schoeps MK 5 Cardioid microphones from the audience and a soundboard feed from the house engineer to wish I’d like to send a special thanks. This was his last night, as mentioned by the band in the recording, and we wish him all the best. Rock Shop has always been a terrific venue for us because it always sounds so good. Enjoy the recording!

Wooden Shjips: June 24, 2012 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

At this point in their career, Wooden Shjips have become a must-see concert for me. The quartet never fails to deliver a powerful and intense performance of their dense psychedelic rock. At Knitting Factory on Sunday night, the Shjips worked through a set similar to their previous NYC show at Music Hall last Fall, but the more intimate venue offered the opportunity to experience the show up close. While guitarist/vocalist Ripley Johnson is the obvious focal point, we were just as entranced by the rhythm section and their ability to rattle my ribcage with deep bottom end, and Nash’s authentic 60’s garage-style organ. The whole of the Shjips stage performance is a spectacle that is gratifying to experience, and we left Sunday night’s show hoping they will return to NYC soon. Wooden Shjips will spend much of July on tour in Europe.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 cards mixed with a superb soundboard feed and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Olivia Tremor Control: June 16, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

June 22, 2012
By

After catching an exclusive acoustic warmup set the day before, we could not wait for Olivia Tremor Control‘s main Northside Festival set at Music Hall of Williamsburg. After short sets by the newly revamped Dinosaur Feathers and Laura Stevenson & the Cans, OTC took the stage and immediately tore into “The Opera House”, one of their most rocking numbers. Despite being on one of the festival’s bigger stages, OTC made the show feel like our own private window onto a living room jam session. The members chatted easily among each other, helped each other tweak their gear and evidently were still debating the setlist at points. While that freewheeling style could be a frustration with some bands, that is the charm of Olivia Tremor Control, who have always taken the “collective” concept of music-making to its fullest extreme (see, for example, the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Show I recorded earlier this year). An always-quirky band with a penchant for multi-part songs, sound collages, strange instrumentation, and acid-trip lyrics, OTC have always kept things weird, though they also have a penchant for pure pop songwriting that most bands would envy. Close your eyes at certain points in this set, and you might have thought you were hearing the Rubber Soul-era Beatles playing unreleased b-sides.

This 75-minute set featured many gems from the Athens, GA band’s landmark 1996 debut LP, Music From The Unrealized Film Script “Dusk At Cubist Castle”, including two of my favorites, “Can You Come Down With Us” and “Memories of Jacqueline 1906”, both streaming below. Of course, the band didn’t ignore the 1999 record Black Foliage, or some of their non-album material, including “Shaving Spiders” from the Giant Day 7″ EP. Although they have been back together for a bit now, fans are still anxiously awaiting a full record of new material from OTC, with onlyThe Game You Play Is In Your Head Pts. 1, 2 and 3 EP from last year to dig into until then. If this set was any indication, this is a group of players with plenty of musical vitality left – let’s hope they keep the project going.

I recorded this set from the center of the venue balcony with Schoeps MK41 microphones and an Aerco custom preamp to create a warm, vintage sound. While we generally are huge fans of Bowery Presents and their fine venues, Music Hall has always been a challenge for us.  On this night, I was not permitted to use the equipment we have used for the past two years to hang mics safely and securely from the balcony, making the placement less-than-optimal. Further, the house mix on this night left much to be desired, with the bass levels seemingly left at the settings from the GZA show two nights before. The recording was cleaned up in post-production considerably, and now is a solid if not spectacular recording by this site’s standards. Listen to the samples, and enjoy!

Special thanks to the Northside Festival.

Field Mouse: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

June 22, 2012

With a sound rooted firmly in 90s acts like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, the Breeders and Sonic Youth, Field Mouse is a very easy band for me to like. Apparently the L Magazine agreed, listing the band as one of the “8 Bands You Need to Hear” recently, which was also the organizing theme for this daytime Northside Festival showcase at lovely little Spike Hill.  Singer-guitarist Rachel Browne is an engaging frontwoman, with sweetly-scarred vocals and a great gift for awkward-but-hilarious stage banter (her reaction to an audience member who bizarrely tried to compliment her by calling her a “black hole” is a priceless moment). Co-songwriter and fellow guitarist Andrew Futral, along with bassist (and band recording engineer) Danielle DePalma and Geoff Lewitt, create a blissed-out sea of noise for Browne’s vocals, as on songs like “You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom” (which was the band’s first 7″) and “How Do You Know”. The band just funded their first release, You Are Here via a Kickstarter campaign, and we hope to see the record out there on shelves and in digital-land soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Spike Hill engineer.  The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
