Built to Spill: October 5, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

In spite of their extensive touring and the considerable number of gigs they’ve played in the NYC area in recent times, it had been a few years since my last Built to Spill concert and the anticipation for this one was awfully high.  Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed; the show that the band put on, along with the songs they chose to play, made it worth the wait.  Beginning with the vibrantly melodic “Traces”, the group pulled tracks from most of their albums, threw in a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” and ended with a one-two punch of the often-requested (at least on this night) crowd pleaser “Car” and “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” from Doug Martsch’s side project, the Halo Benders.  All in all, a wonderful show to reacquaint me with the band after my hiatus.

We taped this show from the dead-center spot on the balcony, right above the soundboard.  Aside from the house mix being a touch bass-heavy in our location, the resultant recording is indicative of the very good to excellent audio that’s typical of this venue and sounds great.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Pavement: September 19, 2010 Williamsburg Waterfront – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Pavement returned to New York City after a hiatus of more than 10 years. For those of us who grew up worshipping the band in the 90s, this was a jaw-dropping, tears-streaming moment. There once was a world where, far from all things, but a hell of a lot more things were right, and one of those things was Pavement, avatars of a time when being a “slacker” was a choice rather than an economic reality. Insouciant, wry and at times impenetrable, they were not all things to all people – but they were all things to a certain kind of person, the right kind of person some (particularly a certain vintage of indie snob) might say. Beyond all doubt time has been kind; since I last saw them take the stage in Raleigh, NC in 1999, sloppy as hell and evidently sick of it all, these guys have grown as musicians immensely, as evidenced by the more intricate solos and the swagger with which they dispatched a nearly two hour (!!) set before a crowd that, as I saw it, included a fair number of people who were in elementary school when Terror Twilight closed out their recorded history. Listen to the 7+ minute “Fight This Generation” and see if you agree. Fittingly, the show took place outdoors, facing Manhattan from the teeming Williamsburg Waterfront. Were Pavement a young band today, there is little doubt what side of the East River they would spend their time on.

These songs have worn well – with nearly every song a classic, it is hard to pinpoint highlights. Suffice it to say, for those of us who will be catching the next four shows at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park from Tuesday through Friday, this is going to be a memorable week.

I recorded this set with a mobile rig in the audience very close to the sound source. Although there is occasional wind noise that I have mostly processed out, and the expected excitement of the crowd, the sound is overall extremely clear. Enjoy!

Lymbyc Systym: September 18, 2010 Studio BPM – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

[iPhone photo by acidjack. Conditions were very dark and flash was not an option.  Photo is not great; recording is]

Brothers Jared and Michael Bell of Lymbyc Systym have had the advantage of making music together since they were preteens, sure, but still, the synergy and skill they brought to this DIY show at Studio BPM was startling.  Their sound, a blend of electronic music, jazz and experimental rock, evinces such diverse acts as Tortoise and Explosions in the Sky.  What is remarkable about the brothers Bell, though, is that they sound like a five-man band using only two players: Mike on the drums and Jared on the various keys.   Originally from Tempe, AZ, since their founding in 2001, the band has traveled the country with a wide array of like-minded acts such as The Album Leaf and Broken Social Scene, and recently completed a monthslong tour of Asia.  This set included two of the band’s contributions to their recent Field Studies split EP with This Will Destroy You, “Narita” and “Notations”.  Studio BPM made an ideal setting for this music, with an intimate atmosphere, high quality sound system, and rapt crowd.

I recorded this set with a stereo soundboard feed blended with the DPA mics on a stand on the floor.  The sound quality is outstanding.  Enjoy!

Medications: July 23, 2010 Littlefield – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Our friend Jonny Leather has been putting on well-rounded and uniformly excellent showcase shows for awhile now, and we were pleased to have the chance to cover another of them last Friday night at Littlefield. As Jonny’s shows often do, this show spotlighted some bands from outside New York; in this case, the headliners Medications and Deleted Scenes are our Amtrak neighbors from Washington, D.C. Medications may not be a household name up here (yet), but they have an impeccable Dischord pedigree. The band is the brainchild of Devin Ocampo and Chad Molter, who also founded the influential math rock outfit Faraquet. Prior to that, Devin did time in one of my all-time favorite D.C. bands, the short-lived but phenomenal Smart Went Crazy. Medications are a more accessible band than either of its predecessors, retaining the intricate, instantly recognizable guitar work that Faraquet was known for, but with more melodic vocals and traditionally structured songs that reflect the members’ love of not only 70s punk and their contemporaries in the Dischord scene, but also their love of 60s pop. Despite the fact that all hell was breaking loose outside weather-wise, the weather couldn’t keep fans away from this show, which found the band playing through almost all of their recently released CompletelyRemoved, which is one of the strongest new records I have heard this year. Ocampo and Molter (as well as Mark Cisneros, who joined the band for this record) gave the crowd ample evidence of their chops at this show, playing the hell out of their instruments even after the PA feed was shut down due to the venue’s noise restrictions!

I recorded this set with a combination of a stereo soundboard feed provided by the Littlefield staff and the Schoeps microphones. The sound quality is excellent, though I do note that there were some fluctuations in the volume of the soundboard feed as the sound team had to reduce the volume due to the aforementioned noise restrictions. These adjustments should be mostly inaudible to the listener. All tracks are tagged for easy importing into iTunes or your favorite MP3 system. Enjoy!

Wavves: June 24, 2010 Northside Festival, Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

June 25, 2010

Sweaty bodies were flying all over the place at the Knitting Factory as Wavves headlined the official kickoff show of the 2010 Northside Festival.  Wavves may have been on the bill, and frontman Nathan Williams was certainly there, but otherwise, this was a very different band than the the duo I recorded at the Bowery Ballroom last year, when Nathan came onstage in a cast, chastened after a string of unfortunate incidents and bad press (which, if one judges by Brooklynvegan commenters, earned the man a lot of haters) – and blew the doors off the place in spite of it.  Now, Williams is back with new songs, and more importantly, a new rhythm section consisting of bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes, formerly known as Jay Reatard’s (RIP) band.  The new band does wonders for Wavves, for one thing, Wavves is now, in fact, a full actual band.  It may be party music, fine – but it’s good party music now.  Hayes keeps things lively in between songs with what seems to be the assumed mantle of stage banter duties, and Williams seems grateful not to have the burden.  As for the band’s new songs, from the forthcoming King of the Beach (out August 3rd), in the live setting, the departure is less dramatic than the well-mixed, lighter-feeling and less home-demo sounding songs that have been released to the Internet so far, but they are still a clear step forward.  Tonight we heard several forthcoming examples of what King of the Beach will have to offer, including the first single, “Post Acid,” “King of the Beach,” and “Green Eyes”.  Northside has stepped up its game even further and has the fans pumped – we can’t wait for the next few nights (and days) of shows.

I recorded this set with a stereo soundboard feed and Schoeps CMC641 microphones eight feet up.  The result is a nicely balanced and spot-on rendition of the night.  Enjoy!

Emanuel and The Fear continue to expand their horizons and win over new fans with a multi-faceted sound that references classical music, bluesy barroom rock, folk, and indie pop.  On this Monday night at the Knitting Factory, the band was hosted by the Onion A/V Club for a showcase that featured The Silent League and NYCTaper pals Dinosaur Feathers. Since we last saw the band, they have debuted their new full length album Listen, which delivers on the promise of their lauded first EP.  This set gave ample coverage to the many different styles this 11-member band is capable of, including a new solo number by Emanuel Ayvas called “Drinking Song,” as well as many of the standouts from the 19-track Listen.  Thanks to Paper Garden Records for hosting us at this event.

I recorded this set with a four-microphone rig that perfectly captured both the room and the direct sound from the PA system.  You can stream the entire show below, and the files have been properly tagged for importing into iTunes or your favorite music player.  Enjoy!

We Were Promised Jetpacks: February 15, 2010 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

A friend recommended to me months ago that I check out We Were Promised Jetpacks when they were opening for The Twilight Sad on their tour last year.  Sadly, I missed that show, but in between, these Scotsmen have garnered some major buzz.  After what by all accounts was a killer performance at Bowery Ballroom, the band headed out to Brooklyn and the lovely new(-ish) Knitting Factory to do it all over again.   In a positive way, WWPJ strike me as a bit of a younger, hungrier, Scottish version of U2, with a style that trends heavily toward the room-shaking rock anthem, all soaring vocals and approachable chords.   Nonetheless, WWPJ aren’t acting the part of mega-rock stars just yet, showing great humility as well as appreciation for their fans, who pumped their fists and sang along to almost every song.   I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time these guys came through, they were the opening slot at MSG for you-know-who…. and deservedly so.

I recorded this set from the same equipment and position as the Bad Veins recording – DPA microphones on a pole at the soundboard and a top-notch stereo soundboard feed provided by Melanie of Knitting Factory.  The sound quality is excellent.  Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: January 17, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

Johnny Reports:
“”It’s not loud enough for ya?” inquired Lou Barlow halfway through Dinosaur Jr.’s set. Whereas the crowd was clamoring for vocals at the Bowery Ballroom show the previous night, this time they were calling for volume. J, Lou and Murph didn’t disappoint; the conversation I had with some of my fellow concertgoers at the end of the evening led me to believe that it was one of the loudest shows some of us had ever been to. Thankfully, the performance overshadowed the decibels. Similar to the prior night’s setlist, they drew heavily from the recent post-reunion discs, Farm and Beyond, the latter of which they didn’t play anything from at Bowery (Murph’s blazing workout on “Been There All The Time” is a personal favorite). Far from ignoring the old stuff, the band also dug some choice nuggets out from their first few albums including, among others, an opening “Bulbs of Passion” into “Budge”, a smoking “Gargoyle”, the encore’s one-two punch of “Kracked” going right into “Sludgefeast” and “Tarpit”, which made this listener’s night.

The venue was only allowing taping in the balcony section, which is less than ideal, but we were able to set up almost dead center. The instruments sound great; vocals are a little low in the mix but you’re not here for the words, are ya? Overall, it sounds very good and I hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!”

Built to Spill: October 15, 2009 Music Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The fourth and final night of the Built to Spill NYC “tour” was a night to jam. BTS seemed relaxed and poised to have some loose fun. Doug spoke often to the crowd and honored a couple of requests — “You Were Right” and “Cars” were audience choices. The most compelling parts of the evening though were the two extended jam segments. “Hindsight” from the new album There Is No Enemy was stretched out with a new instrumental segment, and the show-closing eleven minute “Conventional Wisdom” was perhaps the most intense song performed by the band all week.

We recorded this show from the same location as the previous night. While the vocals were still too low in the mix, the problem is not nearly as pronounced as the recording of the night before. With that caveat, enjoy!

Built to Spill: October 14, 2009 Music Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

October 16, 2009

The four-show Built to Spill NYC tour moved to Brooklyn on Wednesday and brought along another varied setlist. After Monday’s hit-heavy show and Tuesday’s time trip to the 90’s, Wednesday in Brooklyn was guitar night. As Doug’s lead instrument was dominant in the house mix, the audience could literally ride every trip up and down the fretboard — and there were many. From the classic opener “Three Years Ago Today”, the raging “In Your Mind”, and to the set closer “Carry The Zero”, Doug inventive and heady solos were front and center. While we would have preferred the lengthy jammed out version of “Randy” in the encore slot — this version was only four minutes — the band chose to use the show-closing nine-minute “Goin’ Against Your Mind” to stretch out.

I recorded this set from the front center rail of the balcony with the four microphone rig. The sound quality of the instruments is quite spectacular. However, the vocals are again buried in the mix — which given the guitar-oriented nature of this band and this show in particular is probably not a major impediment to enjoyment!

Last night (Oct 15) was also recorded and will be posted very soon.
