Ryley Walker: January 13, 2015 Baby’s All Right

Ryley Walker will be a breakout star this year, and the reason won’t just be his forthcoming album, Primrose Green. Walker has been touring hard, working out the new material, and consistently wowing audiences. BrooklynVegan brought him to New York for a Red Bull Sound Select event at Baby’s All Right, and we couldn’t have been happier, having seen Walker last in a similar two-man configuration back in October at Rough Trade.

Once Primrose Green hits shelves, those versions of Walker’s songs might well seem polite by comparison. The title track’s single, available on Soundcloud and on other streaming services, is a fine version, but pales when up against Walker’s fierce version on this night, a ten-minute ramble through his mind featuring an elongated intro and a virtuosic guitar playing that mimicked some of the dissociative elements of the alcoholic beverage for which the song is titled. But if I had to pick from among Walker’s post-All Kinds of You material, I think it’s “Summer Dress” that will go down as his signature song, as it begins with its loping guitar line under a vocal turn in which Walker yelps, deploys falsetto, flirts with chaos. Watching Walker, you get the sense that he’s not even trying to play these songs to please you, but he does anyway. There’s a sense of abandon to his work that can’t help but grab you; he’s feral up there, without anchor. He makes many of the greats to whom he’s compared — Bert Jansch, for one — sound like choirboys. As to other distinctions, this set boasted a new song, “Funny Thing She Said”, as well as a cover of Van Morrison’s “Fair Play” from Veedon Fleece, the latter a worthwhile reimagining that again places Walker right up there with the rarefied company that came before him.

This set was recorded by Baby’s engineer Rubes, whose dedication to craft is obvious in his flawless mix of his board feed with the house mics. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Walker will be back at Baby’s All Right on March 15 with another of our favorites, Kevin Morby. Get tickets here.

Chicago’s The Kickback have been lucky enough to be pulled for early by some high-profile folks for the best of reasons — they’re a rock act with plenty of direct appeal, a great sense of humor, and strong songwriting. When we caught them at Piano’s earlier this year, they were still recording their debut with Jim Eno of Spoon, and that remains the case today. But since then, legend of the Kickback’s explosive live show has continued to spread, helping to bring out a crowd for our unofficial CMJ day party at Cake Shop this October. At Cake Shop, we got a high-octane show that closed on a special tune, “Rob Our House”, whose lyrics change with every performance. It’s the kind of move that not only reinforces Yost’s wit on the fly, but further endears you to a band that’s easy to like.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from the day, with Schoeps MK4V microphones on stage and a soundboard feed from house engineer Clint. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker: October 24, 2014 Aquarium Drunkard CMJ Showcase, Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It seems only appropriate to post a recording of Ryley Walker on the heels of one by the great Hiss Golden Messenger. These two artists represent among the very finest of their time, separated by a generation but potentially on very similar career trajectories. The two are also likely to have a lot of overlap in fans, because those drawn to authenticity, a canny understanding of their musical past, and honest songwriting are likely to find good company with these two. My first experience with Ryley Walker — playing with a full band at the Hopscotch Music Festival — also mirrored my first live experience with HGM two years before. Here, at the Aquarium Drunkard CMJ showcase at Rough Trade, Ryley proved himself alone (with a supporting bassist for part of the set). More to the point, Ryley proved himself an unmitigated master of his art, far beyond his years in poise and style.

Most CMJ sets tend to be truncated versions of artists’ “best stuff”, run through in perfunctory fashion to get the most bang for the buck in terms of setlist. Walker saw things differently, leading off with a twelve-minute, spine-tingling “Summer Dress” that equaled about a third of the set. That time wasn’t wasted, either, as Walker soared on improvised vocal runs that took the song beyond the singer-songwriter realm into something spiritual, his voice becoming its own instrument rather than the mere vessel of lyrics. As with the bulk of the set in North Carolina back in September, this focused entirely on new material in lieu of Walker’s outstanding album of earlier this year All Kinds of You. That alone should say something about how prolific this artist is at this point. The ability of the young Chicagoan to distill such pain and emotion into his work is a humbling surprise, the kind of thing you’d never guess from the rest of his happy-go-lucky stage persona. This is a man possessed of rare gifts, and we cannot wait to see them brought to a wider world.

I recorded this set primarily with a soundboard feed by Rough Trade engineer Kameron Biehl, with a small amount of Schoeps audience microphones added for ambiance. Other than a few glitches with a DI during one song, the sound is excellent. Enjoy, and spread the word!

Thanks to Ryley Walker and Aquarium Drunkard for permitting the recording.

Train Company: June 20, 2014 Bowery Electric – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If Chicago is the home of the blues, then perhaps its appropriate that one of the City’s best new-ish indie bands plays pretty killer blues. Train Company is more than just a blues band though — they’re a quintet of extremely talented musicians with a plethora of influences that adds up to a superb roots rock band. Train Company’s tour took them East and we were there when they played their first ever NYC show last week at Bowery Electric. The initial impression is that these guys are pros — belied by the fact that they’re mostly young men in their 20s. But between lead singer John Zozzaro’s wise growling vocals, the addition of a sax in several numbers, and killer organ/piano/keytar from Samuel Wyatt, Train Company has an authentic and compelling bluesy sound that really can’t miss. We’re streaming “Steve”, a number that captures all of these traits in one strong song.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards set up in front of the board about twenty feet from the stage and mixed with an excellent feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Kickback: June 10, 2014 Pianos – Flac/MP3/Streaming

For a band that has yet to release its first proper album, Chicago’s The Kickback certainly have received some high profile attention — from both Rolling Stone and Jim DeRogatis. Indeed, the debut album is currently being recorded with Jim Eno from Spoon. The New Music Seminar brought The Kickback to NYC a couple of weeks back for a showcase at Pianos. Its easy to see why the band is getting serious attention — they’re tight, the songwriting is excellent, the live energy is contagious, and bandleader Billy Yost has that x-factor the separates up-and-comers from never-will-be bands. The highlight of the set was the show’s finale, and absolutely stunning number called “Rob Our House” which we’re streaming below. The song draws upon the pure helpless rage of a crime victim filtered through Yost’s magnetic stage presence. The song left me speechless and definitely wanting to see more of the The Kickback when they return to NYC for CMJ in October.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted to the front plexiglass out of the soundboard booth and mixed with a feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Outer Minds: March 13, 2014 DC Against the World SXSW Party, New Movement Theater (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I wasn’t familiar with the Chicago psych-rockers Outer Minds before they hit the unofficial DC Against The World SXSW day show put on at the New Movement Theater improv club, but as with several bands at this outstanding showcase, I’m glad I am now. Outer Minds bring a distinctly classic flavor to their sound, abetted mainly by the dark organ melodies of Mary McKane. Vocalist/percussionist Gina Lira joins with McKane to provide a strong female counterpoint vocal harmony-wise to Zach Medearis, who brings serious Nuggets-era guitar stomp to go with his vocal attack. While the band excels at creating a general atmosphere, that doesn’t mean they can’t write a powerful pop song, too. “Shadows of the Moon”, streaming below, could’ve been as winning a number on the FM dial of old as it is now. We expect more great things from this band in the future!

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from this show, with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a stereo soundboard feed. The quality is limited only by that of the rented PA. Enjoy!

Songs: Ohia & Magnolia Electric Co.: Jason Molina Tribute at The Hideout (Chicago, IL) – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

January 13, 2014
By

An artist who is great does not go quietly. Long after he is gone, his echo will expand into new ears, carry forth his vision and provide inspiration and hope.

Jason Molina was special. I didn’t know him, but you’d have to be tone-deaf to the English language not to recognize the talent in every line he wrote. In the best tradition of song, his sung poetry managed to be both personal and universal. Molina’s words were often dark, but their beauty leavened their ache.

Molina made music under several names, but the two most permanent and best-known were Songs: Ohia, which lasted until a new roster became Magnolia Electric Co. in 2003. While none would dispute that Molina was the animating creative force behind both, he wasn’t alone. In tribute to Molina and his deep well of songs, the members of Magnolia Electric Co. performed a mini-tour this January that sent them to Durham and Asheville, NC, Indianapolis and, finally, Chicago. For the first three dates, Mike “Hiss Golden Messenger” Taylor handled the bulk of lead vocal duties. But this final show of the four-date tour, at The Hideout in Chicago, gave us something else entirely. What we got were more than two hours of Jason’s songs performed by two very serious rock and roll bands that were headless, in a sense, but heartless in none, joined by a cadre of special guests.

For the first set, the Songs: Ohia lineup shared vocal duties among themselves as well as country great Lawrence Peters for two numbers. On a searing rendition of “The Big Game Is Every Night”, Tim Midgett and Andy Cohen (formerly of Silkworm, now of Bottomless Pit) added guitars and vocals. Compared to the sprawling Magnolia Electric Co. set that was to come, the seven song Songs: Ohia set was brief, but it was no less memorable. People remember Molina’s words as nuanced and vulnerable, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t make music that was loud. What you realized as Songs: Ohia closed their set with “The Black Crow”, featuring guitar pyrotechnics that could shake a venue ten times the Hideout’s size, was that Molina’s brand of ragged modern blues could make an emotional impact at any volume.

Magnolia Electric Co. took the stage with the deep melancholy of “Whip-Poor-Will”, followed by Taylor handling vocals on the harder-rocking “Hammer Down”. From there, a host of guest vocalists and players cycled through, including Peters, Midyett and Cohen reprising their earlier roles, plus David Vandervelde and Joseph “Elephant Micah” O’Connell. It quickly became clear that the 80-minute format of the previous shows would be ignored as the band pulled out tune after tune, relying at some points on lyric sheets (“This song’s got a lot of fuckin’ words!” Peters said of “Shenandoah”) but never lacking the passion to honor the material. Perhaps the most Molina-esque vocal turn came from among one of his own bands, drummer Mark Rice, who gave a stunning take on “The Lioness”. That said, making a list of highlights would be impossible, as each new song offered a new take on yet another Molina classic.

The crowd’s largest response came to perhaps Molina’s best-known song (and inarguably one of his best), “Farewell Transmission”. In that song, Molina sings that the real truth about it is that no one gets it right, but we’re all supposed to try. Well, if Jason could have heard his former bandmates and friends on this night, I think he would agree that they got it right. And they proved another piece of truth from that great song, that he will be gone, but not forever. Because the real truth about it is, a great artist like Jason Molina doesn’t die, he just changes shape. In our hearts and minds, he is forever.

I recorded this set with the kind assistance (not to mention outstanding house mix) of The Hideout engineer Joey King, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. While no recording can quite capture the emotion present in the room, this is certainly an outstanding representation of the sound. I hope you enjoy it. Also, the bulk of the Molina canon is in print or has been reissued in LP and other formats on Secretly Canadian (including the 10th anniversary reissue of the seminal Magnolia Electric Co. record). You owe it to yourself to buy them.

Thanks to Seth Dodson and Joey King of The Hideout, the members of Magnolia Electric Co. and Songs: Ohia, and Mike Taylor.  Please let me know if any of my information about personnel is incorrect or incomplete.

Disappears: April 25, 2013 Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

May 7, 2013
By

disappears2013-04-25-2

Chicago’s Disappears distinguish themselves by being both consistent and prolific. Since their 2010 full-length debut, Lux, they’ve cranked out one consistent release after another, from 2011’s Guider EP to 2012’s Pre-Language plus a live album. This year has already seen two more releases, the 12″ EP Kone and single-sided and limited 12″ EP A New House In A New Town. Each of these releases has offered incremental refinements to their dark post-punk sound. This show at the Knitting Factory Brooklyn was my first time seeing  Kone done live, and the title song and its b-side “Kontakt” offer some clues as to where the band’s sound is heading. Both those songs represent longer-form compositions than the tightly-paced stuff from Pre Language, but the new style works for the band, broadening their palette a bit. But fear not, this set still featured several of the band’s floor-fillers, including the one-two punch of “Replicate” and “Pre Language early in the set. There were also a handful of songs I could not identify that I believe were either new or from the A New House In A New Town EP, but any more information would be appreciated. The band also played three new songs — “Girl”, “Power” and “Elite Typical” — from their forthcoming new LP, expected late this summer. Thanks to Disappears for clearing that up, and here’s to that new record!

I recorded this set with MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones and an excellent soundboard feed of the house mix by the Knit engineer Rob and Disappears’ traveling FOH. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Sam Prekop & Archer Prewitt: June 30, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming + Bonus Download of April 7, 1999 Local 506, Chapel Hill, NC

July 8, 2012
By

Sam Prekop
[still from this video]

A Sam Prekop show changed my life. I was nineteen years old, set up to record in the center of a tiny venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Halfway through the set, a guy came up to me who turned out to be my college newspapers music editor. Impressed that I was one of only two people from our school (not UNC) who bothered to come to see acts like this (Sam was touring behind his self-titled 1999 solo debut), he more or less offered me the job. My relationship with music, and with writing, was never the same hence.

Since then, Prekop has continued to make his own unique brand of jazz-and-lounge-inflected rock, both as a solo act and with the better-known Sea and Cake, still considered his primary gig. A recent Sea and Cake show at Bowery Ballroom confirmed the continuing vitality and appeal of that band, who have a new record coming out. But Prekop, who for years has incorporated African and Brazilian rhythms into his guitar work, has more ideas than one band can handle. So, while continuing to record with Sea and Cake, he has put out a diverse range of solo records, from his eponymous 1999 effort that was essentially Sea and Cake-style material, to his latest, Old Punch Card, which finds Prekop taking a radical, ambient turn with his sound. This show at Mercury Lounge, featuring Prekop and fellow Sea and Cake bandmate Archer Prewitt (also a great solo artist in his own right), gave fans a miniature retrospective of Prekop’s career. Kicking off with a new, untitled ambient jam reminiscent of Old Punch Card, the set then evolved into a mix of Prekop solo songs from the last twelve years, as well as Sea and Cake classics like “Do Now Fairly Well” and “The Staircase”. Prekop and Prewitt played with the easy rapport of long-time collaborators, and even without any particular stage adornments or a backing band, the pair held the attention of the packed house for the full hour.

Along with the Mercury Lounge recording, which is my usual mix of Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed, I am offering the Sam Prekop show from North Carolina, which has not been distributed (at least by me) since the year 2000, as a bonus download.  The North Carolina recording, while made with a decent rig, is not comparable in quality to the Mercury Lounge show (in large part due to the jackasses talking in the audience), but features Sam playing with a full band, and is more focused on material from Sam Prekop.  Enjoy!

Disappears: April 19, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As one of the anchors of the current Chicago scene, Disappears are a hard band to outshine. They headlined this night’s Glasslands show featuring Lotus Plaza (that recording [HERE]) and the Brooklyn guitarist Noveller (that recording coming soon) the same way that they carried a previous show I attended with the startling Brooklyn band The Psychic Paramount: by being relentless, sharp and ready with an album’s worth of killer new songs. At that earlier show, the band’s new record Pre Language was unreleased. With the album now having been out for a little while, the already-tight band is completely dialed in on the new songs, which represent their best and most approachable material to date. Disappears deliver a dark, overdriven style of rock, with a Sonic Youth-reminiscent guitar squall backing the Mark E. Smith-reminiscent vocals of frontman Brian Case, processed through a megaphone-style effect. They’re the right band to propel the end of a night – and not just because it gave everyone confirmation that Steve Shelley has landed on his feet post-Sonic Youth.

Predictably, this set was heavy on Pre Language material, including “Replicate”, which we first experienced at the Union Hall show last year, and new favorites like the title track and “Hibernation Sickness”. The sound benefited heavily from the band’s touring engineer, who worked with them on the album and tuned the upgraded Glasslands sound system to perfection.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Lotus Plaza recording, with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones and a soundboard feed.  The sound is even better than that recording due to the aforementioned engineer’s flawless mix. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!
