Funky Meters: September 14, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

NOLA’s legendary Funky Meters, the successor to the even-more-legendary Meters, put on one of their now-regular multi-night stands at Brooklyn Bowl earlier this month, and this Wednesday night show was a standout.  While the band’s shows back in February faced some hiccups, the band was fully on point this night as they delivered an almost two-hour set of nearly-continuous music.  Along with NOLA classics from themselves, the Meters, Allen Touissant and others, the band showed their virtuosity with rock n’ roll as well, with numbers like the opening “Down By the River” (Neil Young) and the Dylan classic “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35”, stretched into a 7-minute funk number.  “Just Kissed My Baby,” which we had seen covered by Soulive at this very venue earlier this year, was positively on fire, but with apologies to that fine band, the (almost) original blew the newcomers out of the water.  As the best shows at this venue tend to, this one got the dance floor packed and the brews and good times flowing.  Sure, we were a long way from the Treme – but at least the Funky Meters could make us feel a little closer.

hi and lo, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set with six high-end microphones and preamps from a close-up spot in the venue. The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

The Hold Steady: September 17, 2011 Beekman Beer Garden – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It was a nice bit of symmetry that Saturday night’s show at Beekman Beer Garden came exactly four years to the day since we first saw The Hold Steady. That 2007 show at the 7 World Trade Center plaza was also an outdoor downtown free event. From the very outset and through our many live experiences with the band, we have always been struck by Craig Finn’s unbridled performance style — he is unrivaled in the stage expression of love for the band’s songs. Its an infectious approach, as Finn’s energy ignites the crowd. A Hold Steady show experienced from the front of the crowd is a joyous and celebratory communal event. On Saturday in the Beekman tent, we were fortunate that our recording location was far enough towards the stage to literally put us in the middle of the frenzied crowd and maximized the experience. The show itself was undoubtedly the best Hold Steady show we’ve been fortunate to catch. The band was tight and cracking and the 90-minute-plus set contained some neat rarities among a full setlist of the essentials. The closing epic “How a Resurrection Really Feels” featured the band taking it slow and savoring the positive energy of a peak performance. It was about as poignant as The Hold Steady can get, and we have chosen to stream that superb performance below.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig in an optimal location, inside of the front left of the soundboard cage about thirty feet from the main PA. The sound quality in the venue was remarkable, and we were also free from any outdoor elements. The result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Our sincere thanks to brooklynvegan and the Hold Steady crew for their many courtesies on this night.

The Heavy Pets: August 26, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We spoke last about the concept that “jam band” can be seen in some circles as a pejorative term. What separates The Heavy Pets from other bands lazily tagged with this unfortunate label is that each member of this band possesses obvious talent and the unit as a whole is impressive from the first note. When they were selected from among 350 contestants to play the Langerado Music Festival in 2006, The Heavy Pets took off on a trek that has brought them nothing but accolades (everyone from The Huffington Post to High Times) for the last half decade. In late August, we had a chance to capture this excellent band at the Bowery Ballroom at a CD release show for the latest album Swim Out Past The Sun — their third full-length record. The superb two-hours-plus set consisted of a fairly representative mix of the band’s material, and just three songs from the new album. We’re streaming “Bridge” below, which is the first single from the new release, due in early October. The album tour continues throughout the Fall on the East coast.

Hi and Lo and I recorded this set from our standard balcony rail position at Bowery. Our four microphone mix — DPAs for warmth and Schoeps for bottom end — was supplemented by an excellent board feed from The Heavy Pets sound engineer, the legendary Charlie Miller. The mix is approximately one-third from each source and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Umphrey’s McGee: September 9, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

[still from this video]

If you look at the bands I generally post about on this site, most of them tend to fall pretty far from the “jam band” category.  But you can’t really be in the hobby of taping without being aware of this rich, diverse and somewhat pejoratively-titled genre, and the Chicago band Umphrey’s McGee are one of the rising stars of the scene.  So, three of us – hi and lo, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy, and myself – hit up UM’s final show at Brooklyn Bowl, the culmination of a five-night stand at the venue that has rapidly become a staple for improvisationally-minded bands when they come through the NYC area (a trend even picked up on by the review of Thursday’s show in The New York Times).  It being a Friday night, fans came ready to party, and UM rewarded with two full sets of their staple extended numbers as well as their usual offerings of fun covers like Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher”, all backed by an outstanding light show.

The vibes from the band and crowd were all good, although the Brooklyn Bowl PA was oddly not very loud (good for conversation, bad for music).  Still, you couldn’t deny the virtuosity of the band, whose dense musical explorations often turned in unexpected directions, led by their dueling guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger.  UM are known for a heavier sound that references prog-metal acts like King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden (and if you closed your eyes during a few parts, Metallica) that sets them in a unique position between the traditional funk/bluegrass/folk sound of some of the older bands in the scene and the “rocktronica” sound that has gained popularity of late.  Heady instrumentals like “Push the Pig” demonstrate that intersection of prog and “jam” music perfectly, combining a funky groove with a proggy guitar sound.  And, it should be mentioned, as a live experience, these guys just throw a hell of a party.  The three of us stumbled out of the show happy, for sure.

The band’s recent blitz of NYC was to promote their new record, Death By Stereo. Although it was largely ignored at this show, there are some amazing packages available if you buy DBS online, including the opportunity to tune into all-request webcasts where the band will play fan requests, band favorites, and acoustic and solo material.

Three of us recorded this show from one of the usual taping spots in the venue with our mic stand as high as it would go (about 15′) to avoid crowd chatter, using three sets of high-end mics and a variety of similarly high-end pre-amps.  Although the somewhat low PA volume meant a few chatterers here and there weren’t completely drowned out, and the venue’s layout presents certain sonic limitaitons, hi and lo’s outstanding post-production mix of these three sources has produced a recording that captures the sound and feel of the show perfectly.

Psychic Paramount UP
[still from this video]

New York crowds are notoriously, almost epically jaded. As much as bands love the exposure of America’s largest city and cultural capital, they also tend to be dispirited by the “show me” attitude of crowds that have seen it all before. Being from Brooklyn themselves, The Psychic Paramount must know this all too well – which is why they pulled out all the stops at Union Pool on a recent Tuesday night to deliver a jaw-dropping set that was one of the most incredible I have seen this year. Cloaked for the duration in thick billows of smoke, their set, culled primarily from their latest release, II, left the crowd in awe at the vortex of sound coming from this three-man band. I don’t know that I have been to another show this year that had as many audience members actually talking about the show when it was over – and stark silent during. These instrumental songs seethe with emotion; even staring into shadows in the smoke, you can’t help but be moved by them. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that they are rendered by players of obvious talent and technical skill – bassist Ben Armstrong and guitarist Drew St. Ivany first met in the now-defunct art-noise-jazz band Laddio Bolocko, a less rock n’ roll but no less compelling outfit, and drummer Jeff Conaway is (as in most three pieces) the glue that gives the band its propulsive, driving sound. Bands like TPP are the artists that live shows were made for – even this fine recording cannot capture their brilliance. Mark your calendars, folks – their next show is September 3 right here in Brooklyn at a free show at the Aviator Sports Complex with White Hills, Pictureplane, Wise Blood and others, and after that, our friends in the UK can catch them at the always-legendary ATP Nightmare Before Christmas. Do it. They’ll blow your mind.

I recorded this set with both the DPA microphones set up in our usual spot in the venue, and a soundboard feed. At the band’s request, only the microphone portion is being used, as they felt it provided a more natural, balanced sound. Enjoy!

Special thanks to Will of Union Pool for having us, and Devin for the soundboard feed and stellar house mix!

Deer Tick: August 10, 2011 Wantagh NY – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have always personally liked Deer Tick, all the way back to meeting John McCauley for the first time in early 2008. He seemed genuine and the rootsy nature of the band’s music reflected that sincerity. As Deer Tick has grown in stature and size, its been easy to root for them. So when we were contacted by the Tommy Brull Foundation about recording their charity concert on Long Island, it came as no surprise the Deer Tick had agreed to headline the show. The Foundation was organized in 2008 to celebrate the life of Tommy who passed away at the age of 23, and it supports a variety of causes in his memory that benefit disabled children. On Wednesday at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh, Deer Tick truly gave it their all for the cause, as they performed a non-stop set that spanned two hours and contained thirty songs. The set culled tracks from all three of their releases, and also featured five new songs that will appear on an album to be released in October. We are streaming one of the stronger new tracks “Funny Word”. The band also let it all hang out and played a bunch of eclectic covers, including the Replacements song we posted on Friday.

Please support the Tommy Brull Foundation and the important work they do, and donate to the Foundation [HERE].

I recorded this set with a very well-balanced soundboard feed mixed with the DPA cardioid microphones placed at the center of the room. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Deer Tick Covered The Replacements – MP3 Download + Streaming Song

August 12, 2011
By

replacements-tim-biggest

In 1985, the Replacements were at their peak. After the breakthrough success of the brilliant Let It Be, the band’s follow-up album was arguably a more consistently excellent release and stands today as the pinnacle of the Replacements catalog. Tim was the first Replacements album on Sire Records, and sadly the last album with original guitarist Bob Stinson. Two years later, Pleased To Meet Me was a clear step down from Tim. The band’s final three albums each represented a decrease in quality from the previous one, so that by the time the Replacements broke up in 1990, their creative output was spent.

Among the best of the current list of bands that exhibit a clear Replacements influence are Titus Andronicus and Deer Tick. Ian O’Neil is a former member of Titus and current guitarist for Deer Tick, and on Wednesday night with Deer Tick, Ian and John McCauley traded vocals on “Waitress in the Sky”. While several other tracks from Tim are clear standouts, “Waitress” is a short number with a bunch of earworm lines. Paul Westerberg is said to have written this from the unsympathetic perspective of the nasty passengers with whom flight attendants have to deal.

The Deer Tick performance took place at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh Long Island. The show was a benefit for the Tommy Brull Foundation. If you download this song, please proceed to the Foundation’s website and Donate [HERE].

The Loom: June 19, 2011 Public Assembly (Northside) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have been extolling the virtues of The Loom for three years now, and lately others have followed, including The New York Times, Paste Magazine and The New Yorker. The band has played four shows that we have presented, including most recently our Northside Festival show earlier this Summer. Their set at Northside featured some new material, songs which continue the strength of this band — harmonies, superb instrumentation, and fine songwriting. We were heartened to learn that The Loom should be announcing some exciting news in the near future that will assure a wider audience for them and finally see the release of Teeth, their first full-length record and an album that will cement their position among the best of today’s Americana music. We have selected “The Middle Distance” to stream below. At Public Assembly it was an energetic performance of one of the best tracks from Teeth. The Loom will next be performing at the Daytrotter Barnstorming tour that will come to upstate Ghent New York later this month.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones mounted above the soundboard room, and mixed it with a board feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

disappears
[still from this video]

Chicago’s Disappears have been together only since 2009, but they’ve accomplished a lot in that time, releasing their debut album Lux in 2010, followed this year with the stellar Guider EP, and bringing on Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth as a new member after founding drummer Graeme Gibson left to continue his work with the Fruit Bats. The band has a new record in the works, and they showed off a solid chunk of it here at Union Pool, in a set that was mostly new and unreleased material. Union Pool has been killing it all summer with great lineups of bands, but this night – with Disappears headlining and Brooklyn’s own The Psychic Paramount opening – stood out as one of the absolute best. Disappears’ new songs expand the scope of their songs just a bit, though their reverb-soaked, krautrock-meets-Velvet Underground (with a dash of the Fall) sound is still intact. But although only three of the songs (as far as I could tell) were previously released (“Halo,” “Magics” and “Marigold”) Disappears held the crowd rapt with their thick squall of guitar, with lead singer/guitarist Brian Case (also of the Ponys) singing with the echo on overdrive beneath. Expect big things from a band that, despite members’ other commitments, is hardly looking like a side project.

Anamanaguchi: July 22, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

I’d like to claim to have predicted the kind of huge success that Anamanaguchi has achieved since we saw them last at the Knitting Factory in January, but really I was somewhat late to the game. The band sold out the Knit that cold night, but six months later Music Hall of Williamsburg was packed to the walls on the hottest night in memory. By the time Anamanaguchi took the stage at 11 pm after two energetic openers, the crowd was absolutely manic. The quartet entered to a throbbing programmed beat and worked the crowd for a couple of minutes before breaking into a frenzied “Mess”. Immediately, massive crowd surfing began and a stream of stage jumpers continued unabated throughout the seventy-minute set. Although they are labeled as a 8-bit chiptune band, the energy in Music Hall was clearly right out of the punk manual. The first half of the set continued without break, as each song combined the four lively musicians with the band’s layered synthesizers. By the time the band stopped to catch their wind and switch some guitars, it seemed as if everyone in the pit needed a time out. After a breather, the set continued with four “space” themed songs, including the excellent “Aurora” (streaming below). Following two encores, band and crowd were overtaken by exhaustion and exited the venue tired but satisfied with a show of immense entertainment value from both artist and fan.

I recorded this set from the center of the balcony with the four microphone rig. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!
