Matt Valentine: February 7, 2016 Trans-Pecos

This past Sunday, those of us with little interest in the big game joined Matt Valentine for an afternoon of warbly space-psych at Trans-Pecos. Valentine is perhaps best known as one-half of MV/EE with partner Erika Elder, but lately he’s been dropping some heavy solo outings, most notably last year’s excellent double-LP, Midden Mound. (Though I’ll note that MV’s solo career hasn’t slowed the duo down at all—last year also saw the release of two killer companion MV/EE joints, Alpine Frequency and Alpine Tenement.) But back at Trans-Pecos, Valentine treated us to a set culled mostly from Midden Mound with a couple exceptions. “Anji Variations” is Valentine’s take on the Davy Graham/Bert Jansch song “Angie.” That one’s a b-side from the “Before It’s Gone” single. “Ave B” is a Tower Recordings song from way back when, and if you’re a long-time New Yorker you’ll appreciate his story about playing the Mercury Lounge on a Super Bowl Sunday bill with Chavez. Speaking of way back when, I’ll use this opportunity to mention that it was this very room in which I first saw MV/EE perform, back when bands played in the kitchen of the old Silent Barn. It was a pummeling show, with Valentine and Elder joined by Mick Flower and Chris Corsano (later collected on No Floor Tour). And while this solo set from MV is something of a quieter sort, and performed on a stage instead of a kitchen floor, the spirit of the music is the same.

I recorded this set from the stage lip combined with a board feed from Trans-Pecos FOH, Ned. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Dan Friel: January 9, 2016 Palisades

Sure, you can call Dan Friel an electronic musician and you wouldn’t be wrong. But to do so would be to describe his instrumentation and the way he makes music, rather than to describe the actual music he makes. Friel got his start with Parts & Labor, a band that epitomized the late 2000s era of Brooklyn indie and noise rock, and his solo work sounds more like a continuation of that aesthetic than a departure from it, even if he is dispensing with the more traditional rock instrumentation. That’s all to say that if you’re a fan of Parts & Labor, Friel’s solo work is going to be a welcome addition to your record collection. Friel’s latest album for Thrill Jockey, last year’s Life, is his most engaging yet, and his set from Palisades a few weeks ago showcases those tracks nicely. The final song, “Thumper” from 2013’s Total Folklore, perfectly encapsulates Friel’s music: a pulsing, distorted beat is overlaid with intertwining keyboard melodies that dis- and re-integrate through the course of the song. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 6, when Dan Friel will return to Palisades for a show with jazz-psych rockers and NYCTaper favorites, Sunwatchers.

Creepoid: January 14, 2016 Trans-Pecos

Soaked in reverb and haze, Creepoid satisfy that itch for nineties-influenced shoegaze like not many bands can. But this is no genre exercise—Creepoid is for real. The strength of last year’s Cemetery Highrise Slum was more than enough to draw us out to Ridgewood for a weeknight show, and our efforts were rewarded with this killer set. For a young band, Creepoid have already built a significant body of work. Most of these songs here are off of Cemetery Highrise Slum, including “Eating Dirt,” “Tell the Man,” “American Smile,” and “Shaking.” “Old Tree” hails from 2014’s self-titled record, while “Truth” is off the same year’s Wet. “Dream Out” and “Enabler” harken way back to 2011’s Horse Heaven. That latter song gets stretched into a breathless, staggering finale.

If you missed out on their Trans-Pecos gig, Creepoid will be touring the U.S. in March. Head over to their website for a full listing of dates. They’ll return to New York on March 25th at Rough Trade NYC.

Oneida: January 9, 2016 Palisades

Way back in 2013, in a prehistoric Williamsburg where you could still catch a show on Kent Ave., we called Oneida shows “a standing appointment.” To drive that point home, and proof that we’ve lived up to our end of the bargain, we’ve since then posted a whopping seven Oneida shows in the past two years. 2015 brought not only an increase in activity from the band but also a return to more song-based sets, compared to the lengthy jamming typical of Oneida sets in 2012 and 2013. Some old favorites have even entered the rotation, including “People of the North” from 2001’s Anthem of the Moon, “Caesar’s Column” from 2003’s Secret Wars, and most surprising, “Happy New Year” from, well, Happy New Year. Of all the many, many Oneida shows I’ve seen, this was the first time I’ve seen them do “Happy New Year,” making this recording something special indeed. The set rounds out those classics with some newer tunes: two from Oneida’s next album, “Reputation” and “Cock Fight,” plus two from their recent Positions EP, covers of This Heat’s “S.P.Q.R.” and Chrome’s “All Data Lost.”

If you’re just dying to see Oneida break out some classics new and old, you’re in luck. They’ll tour six cities in March, and we’ll see you at Shea Stadium March 11.

Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk: January 9, 2016 Palisades

Odd name aside, the band called Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk is really just a bunch of regular guys playing some compelling drone-ish electric folk. The band is originally from Lawrence Kansas and has existed for ten years (minus a bit of a hiatus). This year finds a new release, a full length due in March called Burritos (Fire Talk Records). But for this Palisades show opening for Oneida, the band concentrated mostly on last year’s “mini-LP” release Kill The Fuzz with four of the six songs performed culled from that 2015 release. The thirty-five minute set offered a bunch of different looks at Baby Birds, including the quiet intro, some noisy segments, some folk harmonies and ultimately a little bit of psych. There was even a little drum solo. But the takeaway is that this band is very easy to like, and they will be showing up on these pages in the future.

Eric recorded this set with the AKGs mounted on a stand at the front of the stage. I mixed that with the fine soundboard recording and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Herbcraft: December 12, 2015 Trans-Pecos

Like the Northeast’s answer to Eternal Tapestry, Herbcraft trade in spaced-out, far-flung psych pastorals. Ever since we caught the Portland, Maine band nearly two years ago at Mercury Lounge, we’ve been itching for the opportunity to get them back to NYC. So when we booked Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band to headline Trans-Pecos (that set here), Herbcraft were high up on our wish list of openers. In forty mind-expanding minutes, Herbcraft took the room on a wild journey. Their set begins with a long improvised jam that segues seamlessly into “A Knock at the Door” from The Astral Body Electric and then into “Bread Don’t Rise” from last year’s Wot Oz. The tunes are rhizomatic head trips—pulsating, looping, and expanding without origin or destination. There is no other option but to kick back, tune in, and give in to the mighty Herbcraft…

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: December 12, 2015 Trans-Pecos

Over the past couple years—and 2015 especially—this site has developed quite a rapport with Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, resulting in six separate recordings in 2015 alone, plus a pair from 2013 and 2014. So it was only fitting that we booked this year-end engagement at one of the few clubs Forsyth & co. had yet to play: Trans-Pecos. I’m happy to report that the show was a raging success and that all were rewarded with what is truly the standout set of the year. Having recently announced the second proper album with The Solar Motel Band on No Quarter, The Rarity of Experience (preorder it here!), the band graced us with not only a pair of newer tracks we hadn’t heard before (the impeccably titled “The First Ten Minutes of Cocksucker Blues,” and “Boston Street Lullaby”), but played some older ones we hadn’t heard in a while either. The set’s centerpiece is a sprawling three-parter, consisting of the older “Paranoid Cat” into a transitional jam that takes us into “Solar Motel Part II.” A twenty-five minute epic that left the room spinning. Easing us out of 2015 with the quiet closer “Boston Street Lullaby,” we look forward to what 2016 has in store for Chris Forsyth. And no doubt, we’ll be there to capture more exciting shows to come.

Futurebirds: November 12, 2015 Bowery Ballroom

It’s been a satisfying few years for the Futurebirds, as we’ve watched them grow from Union Pool headliner to solid opening band to second stage at Mountain Jam to 2013 at the Bowery Ballroom. This show at the latter venue found the band doubling down on their strengths, as they jammed out their signature brand of country-inflected, booze-friendly Americana in front of an audience who knew and appreciated what they were in for. As their popularity has grown, the Futurebirds haven’t made the mistake that some bands do of overcomplicating things; if you listen to 2015’s Hotel Parties, you’ll find a good bit of stylistic and subject matter similarity with Hampton’s Lullaby, the six-year-old album that started it all. Perhaps that’s part of why, in an age where most bands are lucky to get an approving corporate blog mention or two, the Futurebirds have an entire fansite dedicated to them, and going to their shows has even become a verb (“birding”).

What has grown since the first time we saw the band in 2011 is their level of confidence, earned through that same relentless touring that’s responsible for the loyal fan base. This show found them the most comfortable and in control as we’ve seen them yet, as they ripped through new songs “twentyseven” and early number (an inspired, extended run through “Ski Chalet” alike. Futurebirds are a band that’s able to both bring the party and keep things musically in their lane, and based on this evening, we expect their success to continue.

Eric PH recorded this set with AKG 460/ck61 cardiod mics and a soundboard feed from Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

New Pope: November 21, 2015 Trans Pecos + Secret Project Robot (Two Shows!)

After guitarist and vocalist Clara Hunter Latham of the Brooklyn band Starring moved to the same small Massachusetts town as Oneida’s Bobby Matador, it was inevitable that the two would get together and play some music. The band New Pope has evolved from that relationship and two weeks back the band made the trip south and played their first ever shows in NYC, an afternoon show at Trans Pecos opening for Fox Millions Duo (recording here) and later at the Oneida potluck show at Secret Project Robot (recording here). At Pecos, the band was a four-piece accompanied by a second keyboard and violin and performed a thirty-five minute set consisting of four songs. The first three tracks are key-based psych but the fourth song has Clara’s guitar out front in an almost surf-rock style. For the late show at SPR, New Pope was joined by Kid Millions on drums and the set took on a different feel — more driving and less spacey. Both sets prove that New Pope is a band with great personnel and great potential and we hope that they make more trips to NYC in the future.

I recorded the Pecos set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a board feed of primarily vocals. Eric recorded the SPR set with the AKGs in front of the board and mixed with a board feed. Both sets sound quite excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: November 21, 2015 Secret Project Robot (Pre-Thanksgiving Potluck)

There is no band more emblematic of the Brooklyn music community than Oneida. From jam sessions in the band’s former Ocropolis studio to the Thank Your Parents weekender; from Brahloweens past to the NYCTaper Anniversary show; from the holiday Oneida Fest at the old Knit to this year’s Thanksgiving potluck, there’s a truly unique binding of community around Oneida’s music. On the weekend before Thanksgiving, friends and family gathered for a celebration of music and food. Admission was free at the door if you brought food and I can almost guarantee not a dollar was exchanged. Around two full tables of food including a turkey, plus all the trimmings and desserts you could imagine, friends old and new gathered to eat off paper plates and see two long-form Oneida sets bookending a set from New Pope (featuring Bobby and Kid Millions of course). For the first set Oneida is joined by Dave Kadden on clarinet; and for the second it’s an epic, extended nine-piece Oneida barreling through forty improvised minutes. To give thanks for Oneida seems a bit silly when there are so many other things to be thankful for. Yet there’s something here greater than just a band or a collection of songs and records—and it’s that intangible greater thing, call it community or simply shared experience, for which we can all be thankful.

I recorded this set with the AKG’s flown high at the back of the room, with a board feed from Secret Project Robot FOH Erik, which supplied much of the vocals. The sound isn’t perfect, but it captures an event. Enjoy!
