I can remember the first time I heard Helmet’s disc, ‘Meantime‘, which has since become the standard bearer for alternative metal.  Aggressive songs that held riffs hitting like a sledge hammer, frontman Page Hamilton (trained as a jazz guitarist and sole original member) threw the musical rulebook out the window and led a troupe of expert musicians who obviously had serious chops.  Having grown up on a steady diet of hard rock and heavy metal, I was instantly hooked.  The times I saw them play live before their breakup in 1998 were no less riveting.  And hearing of the band’s reformation in 2004 was very welcome news.  Having been well over a decade since I had last gone to one of their concerts, I jumped on tickets when I heard they would be coming through on their current tour.  I was further thrilled when they gave me the greenlight to record the show.  With cuts spanning the group’s career and from nearly all of their albums, particularly the recent, ‘Seeing Eye Dog‘, Helmet played quite a few favorites and a monstrous version of “Turned Out”.  Judging by his interaction with the crowd, Page seemed to be having a hell of a good time and very excited to be back in the band’s original hometown of NYC.  And he wasn’t the only one: I’m happy to report that the music I heard that night sounds just as good and tight as the tracks that put a smile on my face nearly 20 years ago.

We recorded this show with a four-microphone rig from our usual spot in the balcony.  Combining the always great sound of Bowery Ballroom and the impressive skills of the sound engineer and the result is an excellent recording.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did and PLAY IT LOUD!!

Sebadoh: November 11, 2011 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The age-old debate I have with myself about going to Maxwell’s, especially on a weekend: Will this show be worth waiting for the PATH at 3 a.m.?  The thing is, every time you talk yourself out of a Maxwell’s show, you’re probably wrong.  If I hadn’t hit this Sebadoh show in this intimate (and for Manhattan/Brooklynites, remote) venue – despite that they were down the street at Music Hall of Williamsburg the following night – I’d have missed out.  This freewheeling show felt like seeing Lou Barlow and the reunited band appear in your living room.  Lou in particular was relaxed and chatting with the crowd, clearly enjoying the chance to keep things loose.  It didn’t hurt any that Lou and the band had plenty of friends in the crowd, many of whom could be heard ribbing him throughout the show.  Oh, and did you know “Willing to Wait” from Harmacy was going to be Ross and Rachel’s breakup song on Friends?  Well, now you do.  And tonight’s show-closing rendition – perhaps to spite the “flat” recording of the song that Lou hated – was pure, magical rock n’ roll.

The band were once known as “lo-fi pioneers”, but like many of their contemporaries from the early 90s, they’ve developed into serious players (one of Lou’s anecdotes concerned the $1000 guitar he was playing).  This set was Springsteen-esque in its sprawl – the first 13 tracks occur in the first half-hour of the nearly two-hour set – but given their large catalog of two- and three-minute songs, Sebadoh had a lot of ground to cover.  While rockers like “License to Confuse” are always thrillers, it was the band’s slower numbers like “Dream”, the poignant “Soul and Fire” and the band’s classic “Together or Alone” that stood out, allowing Barlow’s lyrics to shine.  The set focused primarily on the band’s more hook-driven, lyrical numbers, rather than some of the Eric Gaffney-penned more punkish material, and to good effect.  Among the band’s records, Bakesale was particularly well-represented (and also was just re-released this year by Sub Pop), as was Bubble and Scrape, while their seminal III, the first with Jason Loewenstein, was mostly-ignored.  By the end of the set, it was hard to imagine a favorite Sebadoh song the band didn’t play at this show, and indeed, I can’t think of one.  The PATH trade ride home was a long one, but damn, it was worth it.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Mitch, a new FOH engineer at Maxwell’s, who did a flawless job with the house mix all night.  The results are truly outstanding, absolutely one of my finest recordings of the year, and by far the finest fan recording of this band I have ever heard – yes, it’s that good.  Enjoy!

North Mississippi Allstars: October 28, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After hearing this site’s incredible capture of brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars back in June, I knew I needed to see what this Mississippi blues act was all about for myself.  Brooklyn Bowl – now the obvious heir to Wetlands in terms of this type of programming – was the perfect place for the introduction.  As is the norm for a Friday night, a lot of the drunken suburban crowd was mostly there to party, but those paying more attention were rewarded with some incredible guitar work from Luther, percussion from Cody, and bass from Chris Chew.  The band gave us a veritable education in the blues, mixing in their own favorites with classic covers like Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again”, which appears on their latest record, Keys to the Kingdom.  The record’s title is an homage to the brothers’ father, the blues legend Jim Dickinson, but it could as easily be a reference to their own place in the blues pantheon.  NMAS are the honest heirs of this centuries-old American tradition, and they will no doubt do their best to make the genre as alive, fresh, and relevant as it was a hundred years ago.

The entire nyctaper crew was on-hand for this event with a slew of mics at full height above the crowd.  This particular recording is a combination of AKG large-diaphragm mics to give “air” at the top end and edge to the guitar, combined with Schoeps supercardiods to add the direct sound.  While there is no mistaking that it’s a Friday night crowd, the sound quality of the music is outstanding.  Please help out with any setlist corrections – it was my first time seeing the band live and there were a a few songs I did not recognize or couldn’t figure out.  Enjoy!

The Gourds: October 1, 2011 Sullivan Hall – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Having been playing together for the better part of two decades, The Gourds have drawn favorable comparisons to The Band and Los Lobos.  After my first exposure to them, they also remind me at times of The Radiators crossed with the looniness of their Austin, Texas brethren Butthole Surfers.  Anyway you want to call it, it’s evident that they bring great songcraft, spot-on vocalizing and tightly meshed musicianship to a brilliant combination of blues, country, bluegrass and shake-yer-ass rock ‘n’ roll.  And with two frontmen in the mix, it’s a really nice contrast to have Kevin Russel sounding a bit like a smoother version of John Hiatt and counterpoint Jimmy Smith bringing the grit.  A very dedicated crowd showed up this night at Sullivan Hall and the boys brought their chops and humor for a wonderful, non-stop 90+ minutes of music.  Playing nearly all the tracks off the excellent new album, ‘Old Mad Joy‘, they also dug out a handful of choice nuggets from their older discs.  Since a lot of people know this group best through their popular cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice”, I can’t help but say that they’re selling themselves and the band short.  With such an extensive catalog and marvelous live show, The Gourds have so much more to offer.

Thanks to Sullivan Hall’s great P.A. and the efforts of The Gourd’s excellent sound engineer, Mark, we were able to grab a superb capture with a soundboard feed and our microphones.  The only glitch is a 5-second dropout we had during “Haunted” that has been spliced to make for minimal distraction.  Other than that, the resultant recording is excellent.  Enjoy!

Wilco: September 23, 2011 Central Park Summerstage – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Whereas the previous evening we saw the damp weather held at bay, for Wilco’s second night at Central Park’s Summerstage the band and attendees weren’t quite as lucky.  All parties took it in stride and the crowd, despite the rain or maybe because of it, seemed particularly enthusiastic.  Once again pulling a lion’s share of tracks from the new album, The Whole Love (which has its official release today), we were also treated to crowd-pleasers “Passenger Side”, “Impossible Germany” and “Heavy Metal Drummer”, and wonderful takes on live staples “Bull Black Nova”, “Misunderstood” and “Jesus, Etc.”, which Jeff Tweedy dedicated to us.  With all the good stuff going on stage, Wilco made it pretty easy to forget about the drizzle on our heads.

As with the night before, the entire NYCTaper crew made it out for the concert.  Paring down our rig considerably due to the inclement weather, we were still able to get an excellent recording and hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Funky Meters: September 14, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

NOLA’s legendary Funky Meters, the successor to the even-more-legendary Meters, put on one of their now-regular multi-night stands at Brooklyn Bowl earlier this month, and this Wednesday night show was a standout.  While the band’s shows back in February faced some hiccups, the band was fully on point this night as they delivered an almost two-hour set of nearly-continuous music.  Along with NOLA classics from themselves, the Meters, Allen Touissant and others, the band showed their virtuosity with rock n’ roll as well, with numbers like the opening “Down By the River” (Neil Young) and the Dylan classic “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35”, stretched into a 7-minute funk number.  “Just Kissed My Baby,” which we had seen covered by Soulive at this very venue earlier this year, was positively on fire, but with apologies to that fine band, the (almost) original blew the newcomers out of the water.  As the best shows at this venue tend to, this one got the dance floor packed and the brews and good times flowing.  Sure, we were a long way from the Treme – but at least the Funky Meters could make us feel a little closer.

Umphrey’s McGee: September 9, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

If you look at the bands I generally post about on this site, most of them tend to fall pretty far from the “jam band” category.  But you can’t really be in the hobby of taping without being aware of this rich, diverse and somewhat pejoratively-titled genre, and the Chicago band Umphrey’s McGee are one of the rising stars of the scene.  So, three of us – hi and lo, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy, and myself – hit up UM’s final show at Brooklyn Bowl, the culmination of a five-night stand at the venue that has rapidly become a staple for improvisationally-minded bands when they come through the NYC area (a trend even picked up on by the review of Thursday’s show in The New York Times).  It being a Friday night, fans came ready to party, and UM rewarded with two full sets of their staple extended numbers as well as their usual offerings of fun covers like Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher”, all backed by an outstanding light show.

The vibes from the band and crowd were all good, although the Brooklyn Bowl PA was oddly not very loud (good for conversation, bad for music).  Still, you couldn’t deny the virtuosity of the band, whose dense musical explorations often turned in unexpected directions, led by their dueling guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger.  UM are known for a heavier sound that references prog-metal acts like King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden (and if you closed your eyes during a few parts, Metallica) that sets them in a unique position between the traditional funk/bluegrass/folk sound of some of the older bands in the scene and the “rocktronica” sound that has gained popularity of late.  Heady instrumentals like “Push the Pig” demonstrate that intersection of prog and “jam” music perfectly, combining a funky groove with a proggy guitar sound.  And, it should be mentioned, as a live experience, these guys just throw a hell of a party.  The three of us stumbled out of the show happy, for sure.

The band’s recent blitz of NYC was to promote their new record, Death By Stereo. Although it was largely ignored at this show, there are some amazing packages available if you buy DBS online, including the opportunity to tune into all-request webcasts where the band will play fan requests, band favorites, and acoustic and solo material.

Three of us recorded this show from one of the usual taping spots in the venue with our mic stand as high as it would go (about 15′) to avoid crowd chatter, using three sets of high-end mics and a variety of similarly high-end pre-amps.  Although the somewhat low PA volume meant a few chatterers here and there weren’t completely drowned out, and the venue’s layout presents certain sonic limitaitons, hi and lo’s outstanding post-production mix of these three sources has produced a recording that captures the sound and feel of the show perfectly.

Sonic Youth long ago reached that rare point in an artist’s career when they can do exactly whatever they want, whenever they want.  Two great  examples happened last week: a day after they released two incredible tracks on the glowingly-reviewed vinyl-only retrospective box set by the North Carolina imprint Three Lobed Recordings, the band dropped into the radically revamped Williamsburg waterfront and its row of luxury condos and played a set of older and rarely-played cuts.  Albums that have gone almost-untouched on recent tours saw the light of day: “Brave Men Run,” “Ghost Bitch” and (the more-commonly played) “Death Valley ’69” from Bad Moon Rising were on the menu.  Dirty – regarded, rightly or wrongly as the band’s most “commercial” record – wore its age well on an extended “Sugar Kane” and the infectious “Drunken Butterfly,” with Kim spinning round the stage like a madwoman twenty to thirty years her junior.  “Starfield Road,” from the relatively unappreciated Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, made the cut, alongside classics like “Kill Yr Idols” (originally from the Kill Yr Idols EP) and “Cotton Crown” (from Sister).  Late-period material similarly seemed at home; “What We Know” sounded just as vital among these gems as it has at recent shows where the band played almost exclusively new material.  And, for good measure, the band’s second encore (of three) was the title track to Thurston’s mid-90s solo effort, Psychic Hearts.  Other than their deep-as-shit discography, Sonic Youth don’t feel like a “classic” band, with energy, enthusiasm and intensity that could put most crews of 22-year-olds to shame.  They can carry a show and rule the night anywhere in this city – be it United Palace, Terminal 5, Music Hall, or an outdoor stage facing the bright lights of Manhattan.

The show wrapped with the feral noise squall of “Inhuman,” as Moore howled at the soulless towers of steel and glass and the band’s immense blasts of feedback threatened to shake the junk to its foundations.  A lot in this world feels built on a shaky foundations these days.  Some artists have the power to remind you that some things still are real, and good, and right.  Fifty years from now, those architectural monstrosities will probably be rubble.  Sonic Youth will be a monument to their era.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set with multiple mobile rigs that were mixed together after the show (thanks to page for the help with the sync).  Hours of post-processing work have gone into making this recording sound as good as possible, given the limitations of recording an outdoor show, our location in the venue, and the enthusiasm of the crowd.  It is by no means our best capture of Sonic Youth (see the links to Terminal 5 and Music Hall above for those), but it is by far the most interesting setlist we have recorded for the site.  Samples are included, and all files are tagged for easy importing into your favorite music software.  Enjoy!

A few years ago I saw a Lucero concert for the first time and was promptly blown away.  With their amalgam of southern rock, alt country and punk, I assumed that seeing them perform in a small bar-type venue in close proximity to a drunken, unruly horde would be where they would truly shine and the pinnacle of seeing them live.  Suffice to say, I got my wish.  When a little bird told me that a band called Nobody’s Darlings booked for a particular Saturday night at Mercury Lounge was, in fact, going to be a “secret” show by Lucero, I grabbed tickets as soon as they went on sale.  Judging by the throng that showed up that night, it obviously didn’t stay a secret.  Being in the midst of the Warped Tour, the band was eager to stretch its collective legs and play a longer and more varied setlist than they had been doing.  The crowd, wanting a good time and obviously as excited to see the band as I was, gave the boys a hero’s welcome.  And Lucero didn’t disappoint.  Including songs from nearly all of their albums, they also threw in a handful of new tracks as a preview of their next disc, slated for release early next year.  Put it all together and the concert was everything I had imagined it would be.

With Lucero’s engineer, Justin, joining always-excellent house engineer, Kevin, at the controls, the sound was perfectly dialed in for the show.  Our mics, flying dead-center in the venue, combined with a soundboard feed has resulted in a superb recording.  I hope you like what you hear as much as I did.  Enjoy!

Having become a fan of Heartless Bastards only in the past few years, I’ve been treated better by them in that short time than any devotee could ask for.  After catching several of their brilliant concerts, including the MHoW and Bowery gigs last year, we were graced by a pair of acoustic performances at the intimate Mercury Lounge this time around.  Sans a drummer, Erika, Jesse and Mark gave us captivating, pared down renditions of their work including several new songs, a Bob Dylan cover (one of my personal favorites of his) and brought out singer Heidi Johnson for the majority of the set to harmonize on the vocals.  And once again, when the night ended, I found myself already expectant for their next set of shows.  If the new material is an indication of what’s to come on the next Heartless Bastards album, I’m sure to find myself even more impatient in the interim.

As a compliment to our microphones, the most excellent and gracious house engineer, Kevin, gave us a patch out of the soundboard.  Combined with the dead-center location of our mics, the result is a superb recording and indicative of the outstanding sound in this venue.  Enjoy!
