British Sea Power: March 21, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Three years is an eternity is the music business. It was the Spring of 2008 when British Sea Power last played in the US — a wild gig at Maxwell’s that we captured in all its glory. The show was a typical end-of-tour no holds barred event that featured much crowd participation and some crowd-surfing by the band. Since that tour, BSP has released a soundtrack and a six-song EP, and they are back in 2011 with a new album, Valhalla Dancehall (Rough Trade Records). On Monday, Maxwell’s was the opening night of the new tour and the vibe couldn’t have been any more different than three years ago. The crowd was somewhat subdued, and at the outset the band was all business. The show gradually loosened up, so that by the time the band reached “Lights Out”, the energy was flowing. The setlist was a nice mix of the band’s catalog, with much emphasis on their superb 2008 release Do You Like Rock Music?. British Sea Power will continue with this current US tour throughout March and much of April, and the final night of the tour is a return to NYC and Bowery Ballroom on April 21.

I recorded this show from our standard location in this venue and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Nicole Atkins: March 11, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On the final night of her current tour, Nicole Atkins came home to a sold out Maxwell’s on Friday night. The tour in support of the heralded new album Mondo Amore (Razor & Tie) began at Bowery Ballroom more than a month ago and swung cross-country before its triumphant return. The band at Maxwell’s was the core group — not the orchestra-sized outfit at Bowery — and the set’s full throttle energy reflected it. From the opening notes of “Heavy Boots” the band was tight and focused and nicely complimented the main instrument — Nicole’s powerful voice. And she was in fine voice all evening in all modes, whether folk (“Monterey Honey”), ballad (“Hotel Plaster”), honky tonk (“Cry Cry Cry”) or a classic soul cover (“See And Don’t See”, streaming below). Nicole will play several SXSW shows before returning to dates in the Spring, which include Bonnaroo Festival and several dates with the Avett Brothers.

I recorded this set from our usual location and setup in this venue and the sound is outstanding. Nicole’s sound engineer Jeff mixed her vocals prominently and to perfection and the result is a recording that truly reflects of the strengths of this artist. Enjoy!

We’ve followed Mission of Burma, version 2.0, for almost twice as long as the original run of the band in the early 80s. The most consistent element of their live show has always been the ferocity of the performance. The band plays live with the kind of kinetic energy that defines their sound, and provides earth shattering volume to prove the point. The other aspect MOB’s live show is that the setlists are always quite divergent. The Bell House recording posted last night by acidjack is an entirely different show than what we experienced Friday night at Maxwell’s. Now performing live material for what will soon become their fourth post-reunion album, the band is operating on all cylinders. Each of the three stage players offer new songs that rival the quality of their career output and Friday night’s show featured a healthy dose of them. One might expect that the packed house would become impatient with the mid-set big block of new material, but in fact the mixed-age crowd seemed equally enthralled throughout the show. Mission of Burma rewarded them with a lightning-speed foursome of classics in the encore slot that closed with a reverse play of their debut single — “Max Ernst” into “Academy Fight Song” (streaming below). When the band left the stage the cries for “more” lasted for a good ten minutes before the house music came up — one of the most prolonged crowd calls we’ve seen in a while, and well deserved.

I recorded this set in the same location as all of our recordings from this outstanding venue and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Dean Wareham: January 13, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Dean Wareham has been back playing Galaxie 500 material since late last year — the first show was a stealth event at Rock Shop in August. Sadly, we missed that intimate show, but based on the excellent reviews, vowed to make it to the next leg of the tour. We didn’t attend Music Hall in December but chose instead the intimate and excellent Maxwell’s to experience the Galaxie 500 show. We were rewarded with an outstanding set. Dean’s guitar work has always been superb, but on this night it seemed that every song took on that extra edge in the crescendos. The setlist was similar to the other shows that have been played on this tour — i.e. all the classics were played. We’re streaming “Tugboat” and “Fourth of July” below since both were particularly strong versions. Dean and Britta will continue this excellent tour in Europe throughout February [tour dates].

We recorded this set with the DPA microphones placed at the usual front right corner of the soundboard booth and mixed it with an excellent soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Bonnie “Prince” Billy: December 7, 2010 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Will Oldham is one of those musical old souls, whose sound is impeccably ageless. With songs that incorporate elements of Americana, folk, country, rock, punk, blues, and a tinge of gospel, he is the consummate American artist, carrying in his haunting voice the sound of six generations’ worth of hardscrabble and heartbreak. Oldham has recorded in recent years under the moniker Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with this particular roster of players dubbed Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang. Although they were opening for Yo La Tengo on the seventh night of their incredible Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s, Oldham and the band treated us to a full-length set that leaned heavily on Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang’s current release on Drag City, The Wonder Show of the World, but also showcased some rare and unusual numbers, including a cover of Willie Nelson’s “In God’s Eyes”, and the Hasidic spiritual “Dark’cho”. The players comprising the Cairo Gang gave each song the benefit of rich, full arrangements that highlighted Oldham’s unforgettable vocals. In particular, I was blown away by the soulful “Teach Me To Bear You” from The Wonder Show of the World, with an extended, more rocking closing than on the record. Having enjoyed Oldham’s records for years, it was truly a holiday gift to finally experience this incredible artist and songwriter’s live show.

We believe we over-extended ourselves on the recording of The National at Maxwell’s that appeared on the site last week [here]. Acidjack and I both recorded four tracks at the show, and we combined the eight tracks for that recording. The sound has been equally described as “amazing” and as “compressed”, but ultimately to me it sounds “too busy”. So we’ve decided to simplify the recording, split our sources and offer two separate recordings of the set.

The National: December 8, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The National last played NYC at Terminal 5 in July, a concert we covered for the site. Its hard to imagine that we would next see a band of that stature in Maxwell’s, but the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows bring surprises of all sizes. Although we were clued into this appearance earlier in the week (and the Village Voice spread our tweet), it was still pretty surreal to see the National take the stage in front of a hundred or so people. The band and their mini horn section managed to fit pretty comfortably on the stage, and they worked through a shortened version of the standard set. In a brief conversation I had with Bryce before the show, he remembered that the band had played Maxwell’s several times early in their history, and there were references during the show to those times. Despite how far they’ve come, The National still retain their perspective and the material was as authentic and powerful up close in the intimate venue as it was in the large ones they play now. The National will spend much of the first half of 2011 on tour in Europe, but we expect to see them again in NYC this Summer, although never again at a venue this compact.

We recorded this set with all six of our high-end microphones mixed in eight channels with a slight board mix. We used the Neumann’s for clarity, the DPAs for warmth and the Schoeps for the low end. The results are pretty outstanding. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 6, 2010 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows are an embarrassment of riches, as everyone knows. There are the extended set times; the cozy atmosphere of Hoboken’s inimitable Maxwell’s; the kinship among a group of the band’s most hardcore fans; the special guests; the comedians. But amidst all of that, what still drives the fanaticism around these show is, ultimately, a band that can shapeshift like few others. Especially at these shows, when you go to see Yo La Tengo, you never know what you’re going to get. On Wednesday the 1st, we saw the lighter side of the band, joking and playing Elvis covers; on Sunday the 5th, we saw the noisy, aggressive rock band that followed a set by Mission of Burma. On this night, we got the musically erudite record geeks, the band whose influences are far-ranging and frequently obscure, offering up a host of amazing covers. We got Bob Dylan’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” “Shut Up” by obscure 60s garage-rock band The Monks, The Beach Boys’ “Little Honda” (which they have, over time, effectively made their own), “This Ain’t the Summer of Love” by Blue Oyster Cult, a (this time) successful version of Paul Simon’s “Red Rubber Ball”, one of my personal favorite YLT covers, “You Can Have It All” and many more. And for guests, we were equally rewarded: Wilco’s Mikael Jorgenson joined for several numbers on keyboards, Antietam guitarist Tara Key on several others, and, for the encore, the legendary Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby, doing some of their own songs and more covers. The set closed with a stage full of the night’s musicians (plus comedian Eugene Mirman on theremin) covering The Fugs‘ nihilistic “Nothing.” It made for an ironic ending to a night that was all about affirmation and recognition: affirmation of the sheer joy and variety of music, and recognition of the rich diversity of artists that brought Yo La Tengo to this point.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones and a stereo soundboard feed by the Maxwell’s staff. As with the 12/5 show, unfortunately we were not able to mix in an additional source from nyctaper’s Neumann mics, which is too bad. Nonetheless, the results are outstanding, as all of these shows have been. Enjoy!

Titus Andronicus: April 24, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Titus Andronicus capped off their 53-day “Moni-tour” with an epic show at Maxwell’s that those in the know were calling “the best they’ve ever played”. When I ran into Patrick before the show he greeted me with “I’m glad you’re here” and told me that he expected this show would be a good one to record — he was right. As the band opened with the crowd singalong “A More Perfect Union”, it was obvious that the energy in the room was crackling. Titus sold out venues many times the size of Maxwell’s this tour, so that Friday’s small crowd was all diehards anxious to vocalize their support. The band played much of The Monitor material, with a few older numbers (“Joset” and “Mahwah” were notable), and performed a Spider Bags cover with Spider Dan on vocals. By the time the band reached the end of the set, Patrick gave a nice little speech about the tour, and concluded the show with a powerful “Four Score and Seven”. This set presents the perfect bookend for the early March tour-opener at Bowery Ballroom, which we also recorded.

I recorded this set in the usual location in this venue, with the microphones mounted high inside the soundboard booth mixed with a feed from the board. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
