The Gories: April 13, 2018 Elsewhere

Late last year, this legendary Detroit garage band announced a rare NYC date. No, I’m not talking about MC50, I’m talking about The Gories. Combining the ferocity of Motor City greats MC5 and The Stooges with the minimalism of The Velvet Underground (with way more swing than any of these three), The Gories are the best band you never knew about while they were around. They garnered acclaim only after Mick Collins found success with The Dirtbombs, and have toured sporadically in the past decade. In 2013, Third Man Records released The Shaw Tapes, an essential and raw live document from a 1988 house party. But Collins, along with guitarist-vocalist Dan Kroha and drummer Peggy O’Neill, don’t play many house parties these days. Instead, their one-off Brooklyn show found them breaking in the new-ish venue Elsewhere, run by the folks who brought you Glasslands. Playing classic Gories tracks along with covers ranging from the well-known (John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen'” and Suicide’s “Ghostrider”) to the obscure (The Keggs’ “To Find Out”) this crew hasn’t lost the spark that makes their original output—three albums and a handful of singles—so vital. Long live The Gories!

Benefit for Sweet Relief: Oneida live March 3, 2018 at Secret Project Robot

Dear Friends,

As I’m sure you’ve already heard, Oneida drummer Kid Millions was in a serious car accident a few weeks back and we’ve all been sending him our positive healing vibes. Kid is a vital part of our music community here in NYC and we can’t wait to see him behind the kit again.

We recognize the hardships musicians face when confronted with medical needs. In that spirit we’re offering a download of last week’s Oneida record release show at Secret Project Robot in exchange for a small donation to aid musicians. As per their mission statement, Sweet Relief “provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems.” All money received for this recording via Bandcamp (minus the Bandcamp/Paypal fees) will be donated to Sweet Relief.

Oneida’s new album Romance is only a couple weeks away. In preparation, here’s a palette cleanser from Bobby and Kid doing their People of the North thing, with Barry London joining. The trio waste no time in locking into a late-night groove, and follow with forty-five minutes of pulsing organ, synth, and drum rhythms. As Oneida has drifted back into playing more songs and less improvisation live, POTN has stepped in to scratch the itch for those less-structured performances. Hopefully you made it out Saturday night as these POTN shows aren’t all that frequent these days. But whether you did or not be sure to come out next Saturday, March 3 as the mighty Oneida take the stage at Secret Project Robot to celebrate their new one and kick off some March tour dates. Word on the street is they’ll have those Joyful Noise VIP-only colored vinyl copies to make all your friends jealous.

Sir Richard Bishop: January 16, 2018 Union Pool

Though it would seem off-brand for Sir Richard Bishop to ever release a covers record, he’s developing quite the repertoire. Last year at Park Church Co-op, he did a beautiful version of “Till There Was You,” putting his own spin the Beatles classic. A couple weeks back at Union Pool, Bishop digs a little deeper with two surprising covers: the first is a faithful rendition of Gordon Lightfoot’s 1970 hit “If You Could Read My Mind,” which has been covered by everyone, including Johnny Cash. You’ll find Bishop doing a pretty good Gordon Lightfoot impression here—and if you think you don’t know this just listen and I’m sure it’ll sound pretty familiar. The second is a cover of the Michael Nesmith-penned Monkees tune, “Tapioca Tundra.” Again, the title might not be familiar out of context, but once you hear it you’ll know the song. Beyond the covers Bishop plays a few tunes we’re used to seeing him play live like “Mystic Minor 23,” “Safe House,” and the Sun City Girls songs “Abydos” and “Radio Morocco.” For the finale, he plays “Space Prophet Dogon” into an exciting return to “Zurvan.”

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: January 9, 2018 Union Pool

Until the surprise announcement of Bay Head from Gunn-Truscinski Duo last year, it seemed like these guys may never put out another record together. Their last platter, Ocean Parkway, was released back in 2012 and besides a very special gig for the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen, the pair had been awfully quiet for a long time. Fortunately for us Bay Head picks up right where they left off, proving that when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski get a room together, it’s a rare magic that results. And speaking of rare, the duo aren’t doing many shows together in support of the record, but we were lucky enough to capture this set from Union Pool last week. Old classics “Bahn Mi Ringtones” and “Ocean Parkway” brought back memories of Zebulon gigs past, while new songs “Sugar,” “Seagulls for Chuck Berry,” and “Gunter” were captivatingly fresh.

If you’re in LA, be sure to grab tickets for their show with Body/Head.

And if you’re in Brooklyn, Union Pool has another free show scheduled for this Tuesday, Jan. 16, with the inimitable Sir Richard Bishop headlining.

Circuit des Yeux: November 15, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

Of all the many, many standout shows I’ve seen this year, Haley Fohr is responsible for two of them, both at Rough Trade NYC. There was the Jackie Lynn set from back in April, and now this full-band Circuit des Yeux burner from the current Reaching For Indigo tour. I’m a fan, obviously, but everyone I’ve talked to who saw this or another show from the tour have all been completely blown away. Fohr and her band play the album all the way through and even if you’ve fully absorbed the studio recordings you’ll be ecstatic to hear this ten-minute, rocking rendition of “A Story of This World Part II.” Circuit des Yeux hits the West Coast in January followed by some European dates in February—check all listings over at Drag City.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers: September 6, 2014 Lockn Festival

Since the sad and untimely death of the great Tom Petty, the tributes and remembrances have come in from all corners. Of those I was fortunate to read, the first-person tribute from Lucinda Williams seemed particularly heartfelt and authentic. Of the “fan” tributes, the writing of Patterson Hood from the Drive By Truckers seemed to mostly mirror my own personal experiences. Petty’s music provided a soundtrack of sorts for multiple periods of my life — from his early power-pop hits to his mid career LA-based American folk. He produced songs that instantaneously transport the listener back to that time in their life that the song represents. For me, the Full Moon Fever album represented my return to NYC to live full time and those songs bring me back to my first apartment in Sheridan Square. Oh, the days.

This performance at the second annual Lockn Festival is vintage Petty. The nearly two-hour Fest set draws from all periods in his career and while the tour was ostensibly to promote his then-new album Hypnotic Eye, which would sadly be his last album with The Heartbreakers, he didn’t rely heavily on new material performing just four songs from the record. The rest were the hits and some moderately deep cuts that had the crowd singing, swaying and cheering. This recording is our way to remember this truly great artist who left us all too soon.

The “legality” of NYCTaper hosting this recording is quite simple. The Lockn Festival is an open taping Festival, and indeed in 2014 the Fest’s website contained language that taping was “encouraged” and recordings could be distributed through free channels. With a written clear policy, Lockn Festival undoubtedly contracted with the artists who consented through their concert riders.

This excellent recording was captured by Kubacheck with the same equipment and location from the Wilco recording from this Festival posted on this site three years ago. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band: September 21, 2017 Union Pool

No matter how many times we see Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, we always have something new to look forward to. This set celebrated the official release on No Quarter records of Dreaming In the Non-Dream, whose material we had heard live in various stages of completion over the past year. The outstanding final album versions are a can’t miss, so it was interesting for us to see how they’ve evolved live since the album’s release. This show at Union Pool covered three quarters of the album (meaning, three out of four songs) as well as two favorites from The Rarity of Experience, “High Castle Rock” and set-closer “The First Ten Minutes of Cocksucker Blues.” Forsyth broke this show into three parts, which he characterized as the “high-impact instrumental section, the singing section, and the long section.” As Forsyth regulars, we were jazzed to get a rare cover — Neil Young’s “Don’t Be Denied” as part of the vocal portion. But really, any appointment with Chris and his excellent band is one worth keeping. Catch them out on the road stateside for a few November shows, including November 18 at Brooklyn Steel with Luna.

Dire Wolves: September 21, 2017 Union Pool

If one thing has felt consistent in the world in the past year, it’s been Beyond Is Beyond Is Beyond records and their roster of incredible acts. If you’ve got a predilection for all things psychedelic, you absolutely can’t miss one of their releases. In a crowded field of standouts this year, the label released Dire Wolves‘ Excursions to Cloudland, and I was hooked from the first note. The San Francisco band doesn’t make it out east all that often, and that made me even more pumped for this Union Pool show — their first NYC show in eight years. The three-song set (their songs are long) didn’t disappoint, with the band’s expansive jamming on full display on three songs I hadn’t heard before. Not only is Dire Wolves one of relatively few bands of their type with a string section, but the current lineup also features two vocalists (Georgia and Rachael) whose voices meld seamlessly into the sonic tapestry, more as additional instruments within the whole rather than the traditional rock vocal format. Don’t confuse the album title with the band’s vibe; there is a tension, a darkness even, that flows through these songs, particularly the set closer, “Absolutely Perfect Sisters.” Their music creates a journey, but it’s more saga than fairytale, with brooding and ecstasy in equal measures. In the end, though, seeing a band this good is always a pleasure trip, no matter what the exact themes. Get acquainted.

Dinosaur Jr.: October 2, 2017 Brooklyn Bowl (Night One)

The return of the original lineup of Dinosaur Jr. continues to be a good thing for fans, as the band’s vitality has never been stronger. Backed by his usual wall of amps, J. Mascis led the band through the first of two nights at Brooklyn Bowl like the pro that he is, delivering the scorching riffs for which he’s known on classic after classic. Lou Barlow whips his voluminous hair around like a man half his age; if you don’t see his face much these days, his stage presence is impossible to miss. Still on the road for their latest, Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not, the new material slots in with classics like “In A Jar” better than ever. Early in the set, we got both the winning “Lost All Day” and the Barlow-led “Left/Right,” which couldn’t help but sound a bit like a much-heavier Sebadoh. Given the likely generation of the crowd, it’s no shock that a mid-set “Feel the Pain” earned some of the most frenzied reaction, but it was a less-heard track from Where You Been, “Get Me” that was the real treat. The back half of the set continued in strong form, with a memorable “Freak Scene” and a one-two punch of an encore, with the other most popular Where You Been track “Out There” followed by an anarchic cover of The Stooges’ “TV Eye” with John Brannon of Negative Approach (and the night’s openers, Easy Action). The biggest challenge for this band, at least here in Brooklyn, will be topping themselves tonight.
