Wilco: October 28, 2014 Capitol Theatre – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Wilco, themselves the spawn of the No Depression greats Uncle Tupelo, are touring to celebrate their twentieth year as a band. Look around at acts of their longevity, and you tend to see one of two things: strict and competent adherence to a winning formula (Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam) or aggressive experimentation and reinvention (Radiohead). Wilco may claim to do both — there’s a straight line from the rock n’ roll stomp of a song like A.M>‘s “Casino Queen” (the second to last song of the night) to a song like “Wilco (The Song”), which opened the night. But there is also that seismic shift to point to that began on Being There and solidified on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot which catapulted the band beyond their existing limits into the realm of something special. The kind of band that, in gracing the renewed Capitol Theatre for the first time, belongs firmly in the first rank of bands that made that place famous.

This set was, if one can call it such, the usual harassment of riches from this band — two hours and twenty minutes long, 30 songs, and many old and underplayed favorites. “Casino Queen” joined Doug Sahm’s “Give Me Back the Key To My Heart” and “Too Far Apart” in a semi-amplified acoustic set that closed the evening, and early material (and a fair number of ballads) was the rule for much of the night. “Hummingbird” found touring guitarist Nels Cline on a tear that left Tweedy to say “I don’t think you’ll hear it like that ever again”. The beauty of this band is that even with three nights of shows in the same venue (all of which we are covering), you’ll never hear something the same way again.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 and an MK8 microphone in the “mid-side” configuration to maximize control over reverberation and crowd noise. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

With Oneida, you never have to worry about seeing the same show twice. Even if you’re hearing the same song — for example, the mammoth version of “Cedars” from this night’s show at Glasslands compared to the one we documented at the start of the year at the Knitting Factory — you won’t necessarily know it if you don’t pay close attention. As our review of the Knitting Factory show pointed out, at this point, referring to an Oneida show’s “setlist” is kind of missing the point. This band has long-since abandoned the conventional, which is why they continue to be a major draw in the underground scene in New York seventeen years in despite minimal blog hype and virtually no mainstream exposure. An Oneida show is an event, a celebration of what music can be when all of the downward pressures on creativity are cut.

Joining the band for this show, as he did at Glasslands last year, was James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Dump, whose bass playing mingled nicely with the swirling controlled chaos on the stage. Although technically a four-song “set”, this set had a similar structure, with a 40-minute sequence of “Cedars” into “Economy Travel” adding two shorter songs, “Cock Fight” and “You Get Brighter” (a 48-minute version of which appeared at the 2013 Glasslands show) to round it out. We expect to see some of these compositions whittled down to album length for a future release, but in a way that’d be a shame. This act’s sound cannot be contained on a few pieces of plastic, nor can their songs properly be culled to one right “version”. The beauty is in the expression of it at a given time on a given night–the very reason live recordings exist in the first place.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and Schoeps MK8 capsule in the “mid-side” configuration on-stage to allow maximum adjustment capability to the stereo image, combined with a soundboard feed from Glasslands head of production Josh Thiel. The sound quality is quite simply phenomenal — one of the best recordings I think I can take credit for. Enjoy!

The Lawsuits: October 26, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Philly’s The Lawsuits are just straight up quality. This young act, who have established a reputation in their hometown that is growing around the East Coast, are one of those bands so ready for primetime that you can’t believe you’re seeing them in someone’s living room. Such are the advantages of living in New York City, I suppose.

This Backyard Brunch Session, like the Field Mouse set from later in the day, wasn’t exactly true to the format in terms of being (a) in a backyard or (b) acoustic, but The Lawsuits played this backup location the same way I’m sure they’d have played Bowery Ballroom. Dual lead vocalists Brian Dale Allen Strouse (also guitarist/keyboardist and lead songwriter) and Vanessa Winters give the band a wide palette to choose from vocally, and the core rhythm section of Brendan Cunningham on bass and Josh Friedman on drums (joined for this set by guitarist Joe Bisirri) give power and structure to the intricate arrangements. As a unit, the band’s highlight was probably “Love Is Weight”. With its hooky keyboard backing and catchy chorus, the song would be as at home in any of the last four decades, and it’s a home run now. The strongest individual performance could well have been Winters’ on the country-blues number “Long Drive Home”, where her vocals soared in the room without need of amplification. But it’s hard to be partial to any one performance out of this excellent set — even the impromptu, unrehearsed cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl” brought a huge smile to everyone’s face. If a choice of cover song could fully encapsulate the spirit, style and vibe of a band, the choice of that song by The Lawsuits might well be it. The band has shows in Philly on December 6 and New Year’s Eve, and should be touring New York again next year. Don’t miss them.

I recorded set with MBHO microphones on each of the lead vocalists with a mid-side pair of Schoeps MK5 and MK8 in the middle of the room. Of all of the site’s Backyard Brunch recordings, I believe this is the finest quality one yet. Enjoy!

The Brooklyn band Modern Merchant have an easy charm to them. Their laid-back sound will suck you in at an instant. But what will keep you coming back are the subtle shifts of tempo and texture that give their arrangements heft. Lead singer John Parson has a steady, soothing voice that heads into euphoric territory when it’s called for, but he knows when to use it. This Backyard Brunch Sessions performance carved back some of the more dream-pop-driven elements of the band’s sound, which are out in force on their current EP, For the Fields. For my money, this live set gave the band’s songs a more natural, lived-in feel that goes well with their natural tendencies. It’s always a nice calling cards to have when the band you’re playing with (in this case, Elizabeth and the Catapult) asks when they can see your next show. It was a compliment well deserved, as Modern Merchant put on a live show worth seeing more than once.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Elizabeth and the Catapult recording, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Elizabeth and the Catapult: September 22, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

As they often do, this year’s edition of Backyard Brunch Sessions gave us a different take on the band Elizabeth and the Catapult than you might get from listening to their official releases. Band founder Elizabeth Ziman, a New York native, has a proud and diverse musical pedigree, from classical education at the Berklee College of Music to work in film scoring to spending some time busking in the subway. Joined by new members (as of the last album, at least) Lauren Balthrop and Jonno Linden, Ziman has been putting together material for a new release, and what we heard on this afternoon were soul-searching, mature evolutions beyond the band’s previous albums Taller Children and The Other Side of Zero.

The new songs also offer some of Ziman’s most compelling hooks yet. Of particular note was “I Wish I Didn’t,” whose tone of resignation was lightened by some humorous moments with the DIY instrument selection. Ziman, Balthrop and Linden joined together for gorgeous vocal harmonies, particularly on “Please Don’t Tell Me A Lie” and “Go Away My Lover”, the lone offering played off of The Other Side of Zero. We also got to hear one of Ziman’s favorite Dawes songs, a lovely rendition of “When My Time Comes” with Ziman and Balthrop doing a soaring vocal turn. The band led off with a Balthrop original, “Please Don’t Tell Me A Lie”, which she has performed with her own project Dear Georgiana. Although this lovely back yard on Grand Street in Williamsburg didn’t feel quite the same as a subway station, the show offered some of that same loose, unadorned feel. And it proved, without doubt, that this band has the skills to keep a crowd excited.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and MK8 microphone in the mid-side configuration in the middle of the band, plus spot mics on the performers. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Soulive: March 12, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl (Bowlive IV, Night 4) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The look of pure joy on the face of Booker T. Jones on this night said everything that needs to be said about why a person becomes a musician.  As he sat at the organ, settling into the upbeat groove of “Hip Hug-Her” from the Booker T & the M.G.’s album of the same name, Jones beamed. And the Brooklyn Bowl crowd — most if not all of us much younger than his 68 years — smiled back.  Jones’ music has, in a sense, already outlived him, winning the hearts of generations who never saw his original band play, who only know the original Stax Records from the Internet and (if they’re lucky), the used LP bin.  That smile on Booker T’s face, as he played that organ in the exact way that only he can, was the smile of a man who knows he is immortal.

With their Bowlive series, now in its fourth year, Soulive have easily established themselves as the premier soul-jazz act in America right now, commanding large crowds over these seven nights in Brooklyn as well as top-shelf special guests. On this Tuesday night it was the inestimable Booker T, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, and band semi-regulars the Shady Horns; appearances at some of the other shows included Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Lee Fields, Luther & Cody Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars), Nigel Hall, and more.  This set, just shy of two hours, was a bit shorter than some of the multi-set extravaganzas of the previous nights, but it made for a tight, nicely-sequenced run of tunes that never flagged and offered up one big number after another.  In addition to Booker T classics like “Hang ‘Em High” and “Born Under A Bad Sign”, the band dug into newer pop fare like Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” (also covered by Booker T on his 2011 solo effort The Road From Memphisand Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything”.  This show didn’t have the string of Beatles covers that the Bowlive we saw last year did, but tonight we did get “Something In the Way She Moves”.

Of course, no show featuring Booker T could be complete without his first classic, “Green Onions”, which closed out the main set.  Not content to leave things there, Soulive came back out one last time for a fitting finale of “Tuesday Night Squad”, which segued into a classic blues number (which I could use your help identifying).  With three nights to go, Soulive showed no sign of slowing down.  Bowlive may well be their own bid for immortality.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphone and a Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphone in mid-side configuration onstage to capture the ideal width and upfront sound of the stage, plus a pair of Oktava MK-012 mics pointed at the left stack to give the recording a little flavor of the balance of the PA mix.  The results are outstanding, arguably better than last year’s Soulive recording.  Enjoy!

Kung Fu: February 21, 2013 Highline Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

kungfu2013-02-21-2

New Haven-based funkmeisters Kung Fu co-headlined a mammoth show last week at the Highline Ballroom with up-and-coming jam band heroes Dopapod, with a set that proved the classic can be made new again. With both feet planted firmly in 70s funk-jazz fusion, Kung Fu’s high-energy, virtuosic set made us wonder how this music ever went out of style in the first place. Though still new on the scene as a band (their debut CD came out in 2011, the same year the band formed), the members of Kung Fu have a well-pedigreed history in jam circles with acts like The Breakfast, RAQ, Deep Banana Blackout and Jazz is Dead. As such, Kung Fu has already scored some high-profile opening act and festival gigs, including an appearance at this year’s Mountain Jam.  Their modernized version of jazz funk has an eye toward today’s dance-friendly audiences; indeed, the glowstick twirlers seemed to dig this set without pining for Dopapod’s upcoming EDM flourishes. Kung Fu should have staying power in the scene for a long time.

I recorded this set with Schoeps microphones in a mid-side configuration from the center of the balcony. After a good bit of editing – much more than usual – I am finally happy with the sound of this, but still note that the crowd on the balcony can heard at points, along with the general level of audience noise in the room. With that caveat, enjoy!

Virtually all  of the music we cover on this website, partly by design, but partly by inertia, falls somewhere along the spectrum of “rock” music. Even if that’s the case, that represents only a fraction of the music we listen to, or are interested in. New York remains a hotbed of activity for the still-vital jazz scene, and one of the easiest and most low-key ways to get some exposure to the scene right now is through The Palimpsestic Series, curated by Oscar Noriega at the Park Slope bar Barbès every Wednesday night.  On the advice of a friend, I settled in on a recent night for an outstanding set by the Washington, D.C. virtuoso tenor saxophonist Brian Settles and most of his band Central Union (Jeremy Carlstedt, on drums and Jean Marie Collatin Faye, on percussion and bassist Corcoran Holt). Settles’ 2011 album, Secret Handshake, represents the first record for the accomplished Duke Ellington School of the Arts veteran as a bandleader, a role  into which he fits admirably. This set featured two of those compositions, “Zui Quan” and “Soulnimsky”, a cover of John Coltrane’s “Reverend King”, and three new numbers. Some rock shows make me flat-out bored these days; watching Settles and his band up close in this setting was riveting. In this postage-stamp-sized room, it’s not hard to arrive early enough to get a front-row seat to the action, and I would encourage live jazz newbies (like me) to take advantage of a chance to not only listen to the players, but watch how they interact with each other and the piece of music. Especially as live music is concerned, jazz (especially of the more avant-garde variety) is an undeservedly obscure art form. There is a whole world of exceptional performances out there – like this one – if you take the time to seek them out.

Settles will next appear in New York on this Saturday, Feb 2., when he and Carlstedt appear as a duo as part of the Evolving Music Series, located at 107 Suffolk Street in Manhattan.  Their set time is 10:30pm, and you can get tickets at the door.

I recorded this set directly in front of the band using the mid-side technique with a Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphone as the center channel and a Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphone as the “side”, which allows the recordist to vary the width of the stereo image.  This recording provides exceptional width and clarity, though the instruments may be too localized for some people’s taste if they listen through headphones.  Enjoy!
