A Drive By Truckers concert can be an exhausting and exhilarating experience. The show is jam-packed with superb material — songs filled with emotion, humor and expert storytelling. At the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Friday night, DBT played one of the longest shows we’ve seen in years, not just in time but also in just pure music. The set was almost continuous, no banter, no tuning, no messing around. And at a full two and half hours, twenty seven songs and forty-minute, 9 song encore, it was exhausting. A good portion of the partying weekend crowd did not make it to the end. But for those who stuck it out, it was also a rewarding show. DBT can never be accused of giving anything less than 100% and Friday was no exception. The band was engaging and energetic and the highlights were a plenty. We’re streaming “Let There Be Rock”, which features a mix of all that makes Drive By Truckers great.

I recorded this show in the assigned taping spot in this venue, behind the soundboard and dead center. Although we’d prefer to be about 20 feet further up, this spot does offer decent sound and much of the conveniences of this excellent venue. The recording has some flaws, crowd chatter among them, but overall its a fine listen. Enjoy!

Chelsea Light Moving: March 2, 2013 Maxwell’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Just before ripping into “Burroughs”, their first song, Thurston Moore opened this show by his new band Chelsea Light Moving with a quote from Mike Watt: “When you’re not playing, you’re paying.”

I had to remind myself at several points during this show that the exuberant, youthful guitarist and vocalist on the cozy Maxwell’s stage in his band’s own t-shirt was a 54-year-old member of rock royalty who I had seen perform in front of crowds hundreds of times this size. Sonic Youth may be on hiatus or it may be gone, but Thurston will keep playing – and keep playing well – for as long as he’s breathing. Chelsea Light Moving, as a band, isn’t Sonic Youth, but it isn’t just a dim facsimile of it, either. With Samara Lubelski (a well-known solo artist and member of Thurston’s solo band) on bass, John Moloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man) on drums and Keith Wood (Hush Arbors, Wooden Wand) on guitar, Chelsea Light Moving has an accomplished cast and its own personality. In some ways, CLM feels more like SST-era Sonic Youth – younger, hungrier, rawer. It seems fun to be in this band, in a way that’s almost impossible in a more established one.

Compared to an early performance back in September at 285 Kent (recording here), this time CLM felt more like a real band with real songs than a Moore & Friends jam session, with songs like “Alighted” more fully realized than their rough-sketch forms. There was also new material to be had, including the mid-tempo rocker “Sunday Stage”, which seemed like an homage to Wood’s other band, Hush Arbors. “Empires of Time” was dedicated to another rock n’ roll survivor, Roky Erickson, while “Staring Statues”, the set closer, gave us some Psychic Hearts-era Moore greatness. The entire show might have been worth the price of admission for the encore break alone, as Moore told stories, promised a fan he really would make some Feelies recordings he had said he would make fifteen years ago, and generally held court. He was calm, engaging, relaxed. Free of expectations. Chelsea Light Moving stands as a great band in its own right, and as a second act, it’s more than a worthy one.

We recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue with a flawless soundboard feed by longtime Maxwell’s engineer Carson Kopp and the band’s touring engineer Bentley.  I used a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones for my source while nyctaper tried out his new set of Neumann TLM-102 large-diaphragm cardiod microphones.  We are offering both sources for your enjoyment, and both are outstanding. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead: January 26, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If you have any interest at all, even passing, in the music of the Grateful Dead, then what happened at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night was an important milestone in the post-Dead era. I do not exaggerate, this was a big deal. In the seventeen years since the death of Jerry Garcia and the dissolution of the Grateful Dead as an active band, there has been a steady and sometimes tiresome parade of bands attempting to “capture the magic”. In 2009, such a group even went as far as to tour as “The Dead”. One band plays complete setlists from historical Dead shows. Invariably those bands offer some connection to the band, often an original member or two, and some excellent musicianship — but there is always something lacking. Those bands can mimic the sound and usually feature a wiz guitarist with the ability to ape Garcia’s original sound. But the inherent problem is that it all seems so canned and knock-off-ish, lacking in originality and ultimately devoid of any magic at all. Sure, there are moments, or sets, or even complete shows that are rewarding in the short term. Phil Lesh and Friends has perhaps the best track record in terms of sustained performance quality. But as a whole the entire post-Dead era seems to be just a steady beat of disappointment.

On Saturday night, I saw the first post-Dead band that truly offered music that rivaled the original band at its peak. But what separated Joe Russo’s “Almost Dead” from the others was their approach to the music. This was not a mimic or an imitation, but a quintet of supremely talented musicians interpreting the music in their own unique manner. The two guitarists, Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton, have carved out excellent careers on their own merit. And thankfully neither sounded really anything like Garcia. Marco Benevento used his many talents on an assortment of keyboards to play in his own style, not like Godchaux or Constanten or Mydland. Dave Dreiwitz played an Alembic bass, but his style is nothing like Phil Lesh. And Russo, sure he plays for “Furthur”, but with Almost Dead his drums were a lead instrument — he was able to stretch out and play in a way that the restrictions of a “tribute” band don’t allow. And play they did. Over three hours in two lengthy sets. The highlights were bountiful, but it was the little moments that captured the night for me — a space jam in the middle of Althea, a blazing Shakedown Street (streaming below) that literally began on the last note of Tennessee Jed and continued into a very original jam, the 1973-era “Stronger than Dirt” instrumental post-Eyes jam, multiple teases of Caution in and out of The Other One, and an incredibly huge and energetic Viola Lee Blues (streaming below) that pushed the show to over three hours.

Given the incredible results of this show from a musical unit that only plays occasionally, its hard to fathom that “Almost Dead” might be a one-off or a once a year event. Maybe in the post-Dead era, that’s also the right approach to this music. Get it right, and then let it go. We always have the tapes. If Joe and friends decide to do it again, however, I’ll be there. It may not be like the first time, but it won’t be a disappointment.

I recorded this set with the four mic rig from the right side of the venue, about 30 feet from the stage. The sound in the Bowl on this night was perhaps the best its ever been, and I’m really pleased with the outstanding results of this recording. Enjoy!

Mission of Burma: January 18, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Mission of Burma has accomplished a singular feat among rock acts. They are both one of the seminal and most influential early post-punk bands and also one of the most compelling current purveyors of the genre. At Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, both aspects of the band’s catalog were on display. MOB is currently playing shows featuring their newest album Unsound (Fire Records), and the setlist included six of the album’s eleven tracks. The new material was seamlessly mixed in the set with older material, going all the way back to the earliest single “Nu Disco”, the band’s best known early song “Academy Fight Song”, and one of their best covers (from The Horrible Truth) the Stooges “1970” (streaming below). Throughout the night what was on display was the band’s singular proficiency at their instruments. Roger Miller’s genre-defining guitar work, Peter Prescott’s aggressive drumming and Clint Conley’s angular bass work define this band’s legendary sound. But also on this tour the band’s has been accompanied by a horn duo, and as is traditional, tape wizard Bob Weston joined on bass for the final encore “Good, Not Great” (also streaming below). Mission of Burma doesn’t really “tour” as much as they play a handful of shows in spurts throughout the year. NYC was the final show of January, but the band will return for three shows in the Southeast in March.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the balcony rail and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: December 4, 2012 Terminal 5 – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Ever the new music innovators, for their tour in 2012 Animal Collective has gone retro. Over the last decade the band has slowly evolved into a purely electronic live act. And when founder Deakin took a “leave”, the band was a trio for the last several years. But Deakin is back and so is a more traditional band layout on stage. At Terminal 5 earlier this month, Panda Bear spent the entire show playing a full drum set, Deakin was primarily on guitar and Avey Tare played keyboards. Surely, there were electronics — Geologist mostly, but each of the other three had their gizmos laid out in front of them. This year the band is touring on the strength of the new album Centipede Hz (Domino), a release that flew under the buzz radar but which is as solid as anything the band has ever produced. At Terminal 5 Animal Collective played two consecutive nights, a make-up of sorts for the Williamsburg Waterfront show postponed in August. AC seemed quite comfortable in the “new” config on the first night of the Terminal 5 shows, and played nearly two hours. The setlist began with almost all of Centipede before the classics to closed the show. Animal Collective will tour Australia after the New Year, and likely return to NYC for Spring or Summer shows.

I recorded this show with the 4-mic configuration from inside of the soundboard booth on the floor. The large venue swallowed up some of the sound on this night, so that while the recording is rich in bottom end, its also a bit “boomy”. With that caveat, enjoy!

Deer Tick: December 12, 2012 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Tonight is the final show of Deer Tick‘s three-Wednesday residency at Brooklyn Bowl, and if last week is any sign this should be a barnburner. The first week’s show (recording here) was a tight and solid Deer Tick show where they played Born On Flag Day along with the first EP and about half of War Elephant as an encore. This past week it wasn’t just that the band played The Black Dirt Sessions straight through (plus the Christmas EP), but the encore segment was like an entire other Deer Tick show. The band played nine songs over two encore segments including covers, older material and guest appearances. Tonight’s show will feature the complete Divine Providence album along with the Tim EP, and I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I predict another lengthy encore segment with a likely Replacements cover. We’ll be there again.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the first week, with the hyper card Neumanns accompanied by an excellent soundboard feed. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: December 5, 2012 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Since we’ve been following Deer Tick almost from the beginning — from John McCauley as a solo performer, to the days as a trio, and even as a cover band, all the way up to their sold out shows at big venues, it seemed natural that we’d be there for what amounts to a month-long career retrospective at Brooklyn Bowl. Deer Tick will essentially be playing their entire catalog each Wednesday in December. Last week, the band played their second album Born on Flag Day and their EP More Fuel For the Fire straight through. While some of these songs haven’t been played in years, some in different arrangements, and some not at all, Deer Tick seemed quite comfortable with the material. Sure, there were a couple of false starts, but overall this show was just about as tight as they get and certainly as intense as a regular set. And just in case we’d thought they’d forsaken the first album, Deer Tick played six songs from War Elephant as an encore set.

Tonight’s show at Brooklyn Bowl will feature a complete performance of The Black Dirt Sessions and Holy Shit It’s Christmas EP.

I recorded this set with the hypercardioid Neumanns upfront and pointed at the stacks to avoid ambient noise and mixed it with a superb stereo feed from FOH Melanie. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ben Sollee: September 8, 2012 Backyard Brunch Sessions – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Backyard Brunch Sessions is in its third year of summer events and it continues to draw an incredible roster of performers to a very intimate and unique setting. Last weekend, Ben Sollee played a BBS that was brought indoors because of inclement weather. But the experience remained the same — an opportunity for a small selected group of people to experience an abundant amount of talent from up close. For us, very close. Ben Sollee is one of those performers whose rare combination of stage presence, likeability and sheer talent is magnetic. He is also a natural for the setting of BBS, and on Saturday Ben was fast friends with everyone in the room and effortlessly brought us all into the world of his music. As a duo with percussionist Jordon Ellis, who literally played a customized wooden box as a drum, Ben dipped into some older numbers but mostly focused on material from his new album Half Made Man, which will be released on September 25. Ben opened with “DIY” and ended the first set with “Unfinished”, two of the stronger tracks from the new album. We are streaming “Hurting” from Ben’s 2011 album Inclusions, as it was personally one of my favorite performances from this set and also features some incredible vocalizing at the conclusion of the song. Ben Sollee will be touring (via bicycle!) this month through the South and Midwest, dates [here].

I recorded this set with four microphones placed strategically around the performers. The Neumann hypercards were used primarily for vocals and the Sennheiser cards for instruments. A light amount of reverb was added in post to the vocals and the mixdown is weighted towards the vocals by about 60/40. The quiet room and hushed crowd provided a near perfect recording atmosphere so that this recording is really quite superb. Enjoy!

Wilco: July 25, 2012 Terminal 5 – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

A few hours after this post appears on the site, the entire NYCTaper crew will drive four hours up to Cooperstown to see Wilco again at the Ommegang Brewery. The reason why we will travel so far is essentially encapsulated in this recording. On Wednesday, we all saw Wilco at Terminal 5, and the band once again reminded us about why we’ll make sacrifices as fans to see them live. The meme of all the Wilco reviews on nyctaper (and there are a lot) is that this band is extremely good to its fans. The long sets, interesting song selections, lengthy encores and full dedication to the performance positions Wilco as the preeminent live band around today, and for the better part of the last two decades. On Wednesday, we were treated to a “deep cut” setlist where songs were performed that we haven’t seen very often or at all since the 1990s. “What’s The World Got in Store” is probably the rarest of the tracks — a song from the first record of the two-lp 1996 album Being There. We are streaming it below, along with “Passenger Side”, another early era nugget that has seen infrequent plays in recent years. The final treat was a heartfelt final encore (the 9th encore song) of “The Lonely 1”, another Being There song and one that I’m not sure that I’ve ever actually seen live. Its these kinds of treats that keep us coming back. I’m sure Cooperstown will yield the same kind of satisfaction.

I recorded this set along side the rest of the crew. For this recording, I’m using the Neumann and Sennheiser 4-mic rig and relying heavily on the hypercard Neumanns. I’ve also patched acidjack’s Schoeps recording for the first track since I experienced some technical issues during the first song. Overall it an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Greensky Bluegrass: July 13, 2012 Highline Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Bluegrass is a musical genre that unfortunately gets short shrift at nyctaper. And it shouldn’t be that way. One of my favorite concerts of all time was a memorable collaboration between Steve Earle and the Del McCoury band at Town Hall in 1998, and I can also say that I saw the legendary Bill Monroe in concert at Damrosch Park in 1990. So in an effort to rectify that shortcoming, on Friday I made it to Highline Ballroom for a bluegrass double bill including one of the foremost “newgrass” bands Greensky Bluegrass, and local up and comers The Union Street Preservation Society (recording coming soon). Greensky is a quintet that’s been around for a dozen years and has accumulated a strong national following. On Friday night, they brought the goods — a two-set two-plus hour show that consisted of a healthy dose of original material, some traditional bluegrass numbers, and a series of eclectic rock covers all performed with stunning proficiency and with an authentic reperatory feel. We’re streaming “I’m Working on a Building”, an old negro spiritual made most famous by The Carter Family but also performed often by the aforementioned Mr. Monroe. Of the covers (Prince, Springsteen), the Talking Heads cover that was featured as the penultimate song of the night is also streaming below. At the end of the evening it was clear that if Greensky is the mantle carrier for the current generation of blue/newgrass music, then the genre is in very good hands indeed.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones set up directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed. The mics picked up quite a bit of chatter during the first set, which relies more on the board feed, while the second set is heavier towards the mics. The sound quality on both is quite excellent.
