Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood: December 11, 2014 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It had been a whopping fifteen years since I last saw Medeski, Martin & Wood (at the Ritz in Raleigh, NC, during the Combustication days, if anyone’s counting), so I was grateful to get another bite at that apple on one of my final shows of the year. The addition of the guitarist John Scofield, the band’s longtime collaborator, made this show at Terminal 5 a special treat.

MMW always straddled the line between being a serious jazz unit and serving up the more funky, R&B and blues-driven music that endeared them to the jam band scene, which has always orbited around the band even though they’re not really a perfect fit for it. With Scofield in the lineup, the band becomes a bit more of a “rock” band, and that made Scofield an especially worthy addition in this cavernous room.

To that end, the first set of the performance worked better for me, kicking off with a few minutes of improv before delving into “Sham Time”, the leadoff track from the foursome’s 2014 album Juice, followed by perhaps the moment of the show, “Juicy Lucy”, featuring Martin’s mother Jean and Jerry Paris dancing together onstage. From there we got an older MSMW tune, “Chank”, followed by two more from Juice. 

The second set fell into the trap that I think befalls too many otherwise-talented bands followed by the “jam band” faithful — the curse of the Rock Canon. I find it unfortunate when a musician of any stripe can’t bring themselves to churn out something more inventive than covers of the best-loved songs of the sixties and seventies, but it’s especially unfortunate coming from what is ostensibly a jazz outfit. Each of “The Times They Are A-Changin'”, “Sunshine of Your Love” and The Doors’ heinous “Light My Fire” can be found on Juice, and none did much credit to these musicians on that album or in the room on this night. While the quartet found some new solo-worthy material to mine in each song, the fact remains that these three well-worn hits are better suited to a jukebox, rather than half of a live set by a band that’s still making quality new material.

That quibble aside, I’m excited to have seen MSMW for the first time, and to have (finally) caught MMW again after so long of a break.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones right at the soundboard, into the Aerco custom preamp for extra warmth and realism. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Angel Olsen: December 9, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

Angel Olsen ended up on a lot of year-end lists this year for several reasons, but the instrument you’ll notice most is her voice. Olsen has one of those aching, slightly sharp tones to her throat that doesn’t let your attention slip, refuses to fade into background music. This show at Bowery Ballroom was the second of a two-night stand for Olsen at the venue, and her final show of the year. In keeping with that, she let loose, drinking tequila onstage and playing both some cool covers (Waylon Jennings’ “Rainy Day Woman”) and some of her oldest songs (“Tiniest Lights”). She played that latter song, and several others, to a room rapt and whisper-quiet, alone on her guitar. The rock-ier songs, especially those from the lauded Burn Your Fire for No Witness, may have carried the day with the crowd, but it was these quiet numbers that gave the clearer window into who Olsen is and just how affecting her work can be. It wouldn’t be wrong to call Olsen one of the breakout acts of 2014, and she more than deserves the title. I hope she has a wonderful 2015.

It only took one listen to Ought‘s debut album, More Than Any Other Day to understand that they are a young band of uncommon musical ambition and scope. They play a brand of rhythmically complex art-punk that incorporates elements of the “math rock” sound that rose to prominence in the 1990s, while still maintaining a great ability to make melodies you might hum. Formed in Montreal during a period of civil unrest by a group of young men mostly from somewhere else, their songs brim with disaffection as well as hope, a sort of post-OWS sensation that no matter how difficult things may seem, a way forward still exists. The album title, then, says a lot about where they are philosophically.

As a live band, Ought more than do their recorded output justice. They took the stage at Bowery Ballroom in a relatively quiet pre-CMJ week and stormed through most of their album plus a new song. The whole band has significant musical chops; drummer Tim Keen deserves a lot of the credit for keeping things tight, just as Tim Keeler’s sneering vocals give a memorable voice to the band’s vision. Listening to the eight songs live, some of which got the extended treatment (especially “Forgiveness”) it was striking how single-worthy almost every one of these tracks was, as well as how distinct each song was from the other. Pitchfork’s very positive review rightly pointed out that Ought’s more immediate style made them an odd bedfellow with the roster they share with Godspeed You Black Emperor and Colin Stetson, but I think Constellation Records knows what they’re up to. If the label’s goal is to cull the very best of the band’s adopted city, putting ambition at the forefront of any particular genre, then Ought fit right in. These guys are going places. And if you want to watch them do it, catch some of their upcoming tour dates, including Washington, DC tonight and Purchase, NY tomorrow.

Gringo Star: June 14, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Gringo Star‘s formula ain’t hard to figure out, nor is it foreign to fans of the stellar garage rock that’s been pouring out of the Atlanta, GA area for the past several years. Helmed by the Furgiuele brothers — Nick and Peter — Gringo Star plays fun-loving, to-the-point tunes that find them in good company with other recent site favorites like fellow Atlantans The Coathangers and the West Coasters Night Beats. This late-night set at Mercury Lounge proved to be the kind of free-for-all you might expect, with the band as ringleaders. Their latest album, Floating Out to See, finds them in a slightly mellower, more textured mode on the LP, but in the tight confines of Mercury it all came out pure party music. I can only hope the after party was as much of a scorcher as this set. 

This set was recorded by the Mercury staff directly from the soundboard and provided to us. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Herbcraft: January 24, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

“It’s some heady shit.”

That was my introduction, via a fellow attendee, to what to expect from Herbcraft, and I’d say his summary was accurate. This set at Mercury Lounge found the band edging away from their more Eastern-tinged work toward a more straight-up psychedelic rock vibe. That said, these four songs, three of them played in a seamless sequence, were still far out. As with many emerging artists, Herbcraft began as a one-man band in a bedroom, with Matt Lajoie making compositions on his own, but in the intervening half-decade, it has become much more. The band’s organic style, evidenced on five previous releases including their most recent, The Astral Body Electric, translated easily in the live setting, where the band could expand its horizons even further. Herbcraft came straight at us, with screaming guitars and heavily distorted, almost ritualistic vocals, sometimes impossible to distinguish from the surges from the guitars. What struck me most, as this half hour of awesome ended, was the sense of momentum of the work; Lajoie and the band started somewhere, experimented wildly along the way, but got us to our destination. A place that, once we arrived, we didn’t even know we would end up.

Heaven: February 7, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Last summer, Goodnight Records released the debut album from NYC-based band Heaven, Telepathic Love. Labelmates Friend Roulette are no stranger to NYCTaper, so naturally the LP was an easy buy. It was love at first listen and then again at Mercury Lounge last Friday night as we got to see them live and in action for the first time as they opened up for +/- {plus/minus}.

Heaven is billed as a collaboration between Matt Sumrow (The Comas, Dean and Britta), Mikey Jones (The Big Sleep, Swervedriver), and Ryan Lee Dunlap (Fan-Tan). While the studio sound of Telepathic Love sits squarely in the psychedelic / noise pop realm, Heaven’s live treatment of the songs emphasizes shimmery guitars, warm synth riffs, and new wave sensibilities — all enhanced by hot pink and blue fluorescent stage lights that scored major brownie points with the excited hometown crowd.

The band played a number of songs from the LP, including personal favorites “Falling Apple” and “Mountains Move.” They also dug into their repertoire of covers to jam out on The Kinks’ “See My Friends” and New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle.” And as they mentioned during the set, the band has recently been in the studio recording a new album — so they treated show-goers to a new, never-played-live-before track.

We recorded Heaven with a superb board feed provided by house engineer David and a pair of Schoeps MK41 microphones in our usual spot. Enjoy!

Woodsman: January 24, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Woodsman has continued to evolve as a unit since we first became interested in their work four years ago, when they released their Mystery Tape EP. The band’s compositions have now fully evolved from more danceable material into instrumental, free-flowing, hypnotic affairs that were well-suited to this late-night set at Mercury Lounge. It feels as if the band that has emerged from their latest recording sessions is the beast they were meant to be, rhythmic, technical-minded, unconventional. Their newly-released, self-titled album Woodsman almost announces their new sense of purpose (this Pitchfork review, out today, is worth reading), and it’s an LP well-suited to winter months that leave you time to think. This show gave us some of that new record’s highlights, like “Healthy Life”, streaming below, and “All Tangled Up”, as well as two brand-new songs that we hope will see the light of day in the future. The band is touring the East Coast and Midwest this month, including a date at Death By Audio on February 8.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a flawless soundboard feed from house engineer David. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Rooks: January 23, 2014 Piano’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I guess I shouldn’t say I was shocked at the size and age of the crowd that was out for The Rooks‘ third of four Piano’s Thursday night residencies. If you watch the Grammys or read most music blogs, you could be forgiven for expecting fans to only be interested in bands defined more by their haircuts or who their “producer” credits go to than the music they are making. The Rooks are a complete breath of fresh air in that respect. Their value proposition is simple: Well-executed, well-crafted classic R&B and soul delivered with maximum enthusiasm and minimum attitude. Think the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Spinners.

Recent grads of Wesleyan University (a school famous for birthing less-conventional bands like MGMT and Das Racist), this young sextet has honed their craft to a tee, playing music that honors its history and lives up to its standards. That their cover songs, like the Fugees version of “Killing Me Softly” or Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” stand up as well as they do next to the band’s originals like their single “Twister” or the uptempo “Fall For You” is a testament to just how good they are at what they do. But the best compliment to them of all comes from the crowd they bring out — they bring bodies in the door, and once they’re there, get them moving. I had no doubt that this residency will launch this band to bigger stages — and it already has. The last night of the residency this Thursday, January 30 at Pianos, is sold out, but the band will be at the Gramercy Theatre on February 27. Tickets here.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by house engineer Wilfred, combined with Schoeps MK4V microphones. I weighted the final mix more heavily toward the board than I would have liked, owing to the rowdiness of the crowd, who you can clearly hear having a good time on the tape. While you lose a little bit of “room” feel, the sound quality is nonetheless outstanding. Enjoy!

Kevin Morby: January 16, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Kevin Morby has been part of a couple of bands we love, The Babies and, in particular, Woods, so we are excited to be a part of his next musical phase. Kevin left New York for the sunnier climes of LA this past year, and his record Harlem River is a bit of a wistful sayonara to his time here. Compared to his other bands, the record moves at a more sedate pace than the Babies, and doesn’t rely on the guitar freakouts that underline the best songs in the Woods catalog. The new material makes the case for Morby as a songwriter, without having to play loud and fast to make a point. The songs are reflective, mature and most importantly, memorable. Harlem River was easily one of the year’s most underrated records.

Morby opened a packed Mercury Lounge on this Thursday night that was already full for his set. Cate Le Bon is featured on one of the Harlem River tracks, “Slow Train”, so it makes sense that they’d share some of the same crowd. He hadn’t been to New York in a while, he said, and his first offerings to get us in his good graces were two new songs, “The Jester, The Tramp and the Acrobat” and the faster “The Ballad of Arlo Jones”, which is streaming below. From there, he hit the highlights of Harlem River’s eight songs, including a rendition of the title track that offered some extended guitar work, and the album’s logical single, “Miles, Miles, Miles”. For a closer, Morby went back to the well of new material, delivering the excellent “All My Life”, a song that shows that his new journey is only in its beginning stages. Expect to see the new songs on a forthcoming LP (timing TBD). You can follow Kevin on Twitter to keep up with his latest.

These Animals: December 6, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The indie pop band These Animals came to Mercury Lounge a couple Friday nights ago and made the rather crowded bill (three-band early show, two-band late show) their own. The four-member crew met while studying music production at SUNY Purchase, and that shows in their melodic approach and knack for arrangements. As they have said in interviews, they aren’t afraid of writing pop songs, and that shows on unabashed feel good numbers like their latest single, “Hunting Horn”, which is streaming below. They’re a good kind of band to see after a long work week, filled with optimism and good nature that comes through between and during songs. Best of all, this set found us treated to an encore (!!!) that included some hilarious Tom Petty and U2 teases, before the band cranked out the night’s highlight, “Four to the Floor”, also streaming below. I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the house engineer, David. Aside from a couple mid-set songs where a few overly chatty audience members decided to congregate right under the microphones, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
