Mogwai: May 9, 2014 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Some bands seem born for big stages, fueled by theatrics and spectacle. I first saw Glasgow’s Mogwai opening for Pavement in 1997. Back then, drunks in the audience made stupid jokes about kilts and wondered aloud why their songs didn’t have any words. Their music had grand sweep — that much was obvious — but their style was still something foreign, hard to imagine outstretching those humble confines, no matter how good it was. Today, this music has become the stuff of soundtracks, more familiar. The difference in Mogwai and many acts that followed is that they not only helped start the trend, but their output defined it. Mogwai have never been simple shillers of the soft-loud dynamic, not even since their early work on Young Team. The band on stage on this night, playing material from their latest release Rave Tapes, has grown in the 14 years since that first show I saw. First through remix albums, and later in their main body of work, the band kept with the times, incorporating a greater degree of electronica and kraut rock into their repertoire. Rave Tapes is the furthest they have taken that aesthetic, with an exclamation point put on that choice by their choice of opening act, the Pittsburgh-based electronic composer Majeure. What hasn’t changed since the beginning is the band’s kindness to their fans, and the quality and depth of their work. Mogwai, like the sci-fi creature for which they’re named, are an ever-evolving, fearsome beast.

As with some of the West Coast and European shows we’ve seen popping up on the Internet, this set surveyed the band’s entire career right from the get-go, from the one-two punch of the Rave Tapes song “Heard About You Last Night” followed by “Friend of the Night” from Mr. Beast and Rock Action‘s “Friend of the Night”, then all the way back to the Ten Rapid days for tour favorite “Ithica 27/9”. New York has always held a special place in the band’s collective heart, with the band’s three-night stand at the intimate Music Hall of Williamsburg having served as the site for the band’s live album, Special Moves (two of which shows we recorded). Despite the big light show and the distance between us, this still felt like one of those intimate nights in the many smaller venues they’ve played on the way here. Their beautiful noise closed the distance.

Together with hi and lo and Johnny Fried Chicken Boy, I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue, with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones pointed at the stacks, placed on an extension pole almost directly over Mogwai’s engineer’s head. What you’re hearing on this recording is almost exactly what he heard. Enjoy!

We are happy to present a terrific bill of four bands tonight at Cameo Gallery. The Loom are very familiar to readers of this site, as they’ve played NYCTaper Presents shows four times and we’ve recorded them countless other times. Our newer friends Dead Stars played our CMJ show in October, and I’m streaming a track from that show below. Whiskey Bitches very recently played our killer show at Death By Audio last month. Ghost Punch is the show’s opener and although we’ve never hosted them before, we expect they’ll become site regulars like the others.

Whiskey Bitches: April 8, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Whiskey Bitches are a band with a ton of potential who get better every time I see them. At Death By Audio last month the band’s energy and enthusiasm were as strong as ever, but it was the integration of new-ish drummer Eli Lopez into the mix that really shined on this night. His aggressive sense of rhythm fits well with the Bitches musical style and he locked in the beat propelling forward a strong set. The band is currently mixing down an EP for near-future release and the setlist saw those tracks, the two songs from their debut EP, and two news ones in a half-hour set that ended far too quickly. Whiskey Bitches play again on Tuesday at Cameo Gallery in a show presented by NYCTaper.

Acidjack and I recorded this set in the same manner as the Crazy Pills set from this show and the sound quality is equally excellent. Enjoy!

Homegrown Sunday Ramble #17 New Neil Young, NYCTaper Interview, Summer Music Festival Preview by Homegrown Sunday Ramble on Mixcloud

We (nyctaper and acidjack) were on the excellent webradio station Homegrown Radio NJ on Sunday night. The “Sunday Ramble” guys are clearly knowledgeable fans of the site and the interview went extremely well. We had a great time talking to Paul and Dave. The interview with us begins at about 30 minutes into the stream, but please listen to the whole show on this stream. Also, tune into the Sunday Ramble every Sunday night from 7pm to 9pm.

We had so much fun doing this interview that we’d love to do more. If you have a radio show and want us to talk about live music in NYC, send us an email.

Few local musicians are harder working than Alyse Lamb of EULA, a band that has graced almost every stage in Brooklyn (including one of ours) in the past few years. When you watch her perform, you realize that the hard work pays off, not only in terms of her songs, but in her presentation. Lamb knows how to put on a great rock show.

Parlor Walls is a bit of a different beast, a stripped-down duo that finds Lamb joined with Chris Mulligan, who mans the drums and keys at the same time. Parlor Walls’ sound is darker and more atmospheric than EULA’s amped-up pop-punk, though Lamb can’t resist those garagey riffs 100 percent of the time. This night at Glasslands was only the band’s second show, but true to form, Lamb and Mulligan had these songs ready for prime time. Among my favorites were the one-two punch of the intro songs, “Animal”, which jammed straight into “Mississippi”, as well as the hard-edged, discordant closer, “Birthday”. While we’re still EULA fans, Parlor Walls is a great way to get to know Lamb’s darker side. Expect more shows from them (and EULA) in the spring and summer around Brooklyn.

I recorded this set with the flawless house mix of Glasslands head engineer Josh Thiel, combined with our installed Naiant X-R cardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

EULA can be found next on May 28 at Baby’s All Right.

Crazy Pills DBA 4-8-14
[iphone photo by nyctaper]

When we put together a showcase for Death By Audio for last Tuesday, I was pretty excited going into the night. We had four excellent bands and although I’d never seen Crazy Pills live, their album had been on constant play for the last few weeks. When the show was a resounding success far beyond our expectations, it was in large part because many of the attendees already understood what we learned that night — that Crazy Pills has a infectious and kinetic stage energy that engaged the entire room from the start to the end of their forty minute set. The band is a trio fronted by Amanda B on guitar and vocals, Eddie from pow wow! on bass and Jim from Clouder on drums. The band’s debut album Restless is a mix of rockabilly, garage, brit invasion and power pop and it raves from start to finish. Their 9-song set contained seven tracks from the album, one new one and a fairly obscure cover. As with most of the crowd, we couldn’t keep from moving our feet throughout the set, and chuckling along with the witty and sometimes blue humor of the banter. Suffice to say that Crazy Pills are now on our must-see list, and that’s a good thing for us and our readers. They have several upcoming local dates, including a show at Grand Victory on May 2.

Acidjack and I recorded this set with his Naiant Omnis mounted to the ceiling about 20 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed provided by DBA’s indefatigable leader Edan. The recording has all of the energy from the show with clear instrumentation and vocals and we’re extremely pleased with the quality. Enjoy!

Wussy: April 4, 2014 The Studio at Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Wussy at Studio WH
[iphone photo by nyctaper]

Wussy’s new album Attica (Shake It Records) will be released in about a month. Its the band’s fifth full-length release and its certainly their most ambitious project thus far. The album fully incorporates touring guitarist John Erhardt as a full-time member and the added instrumentation is evident in the record’s production. Wussy recorded in the Afghan Whigs John Curley’s studio and the results are both stylistically consistent with their previous output and more fully realized. Wussy is still raw and authentic, and when we caught them live last week at The Studio at Webster Hall, still funny as hell. This band has some very dedicated fans — we receive more requests to record Wussy than any other band, believe it not — and the front half of the room at the Studio was packed. Lisa Walker even took time during the encore break to individually thank fans who she’d seen consistently at shows. The set was what we’ve come to expect from our previous experiences, a fun and energetic but a tad bit sloppy run through a good selection of the band’s Ohio americana/garage rock with frequent bits of hilarious banter. For this tour, the Attica material is obviously front and center and we’re streaming an excellent version of “Bug”, one of the standout tracks on the album.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards set up beside the soundboard in the rear of the rectangular room and mixed with a board feed provided by house FOH David. The chattering in the back of the room can be heard at quieter times in the recording, but overall the sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: April 2, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

April 7, 2014
By

HFTRR LC

In February, Hurray For The Riff Raff released Small Town Heroes, their first album for ATO Records. As we’ve followed the band closely for several years, the last five recordings of HFTRR on this site have also followed the growth and development of these songs over time. The album is a brilliant dose of Americana but the songcraft is truly what shines in the collection of inspired tracks. There’s the Carter Family influenced old country of “Blue Ridge Mountain”, country-rock in “End Of The Line”, New Orleans blues of “St Roch Blues”, the John Prine-ish title track, and the reverse/revenge murder ballad “The Body Electric” — all of which are authentic interpretations of the best of American music. HFTRR recently had a major personnel change when Sam Doores returned to his own excellent band The Deslondes. Our previous HFTRR experience featured Deslondes as the opening band, and Sam guested on several tracks. This past week at Knitting Factory was our first HFTRR show where Alynda Lee was the sole front-person and the growth in both her stage maturity and ease in the spotlight continue to impress. But she’s still a kid at heart and it brought smiles when she told of her shyness at meeting one of her idols Lucinda Williams at SXSW this year. I couldn’t help but think that ten years or so from now young performers will approach their idol Alynda Lee with the same timidity. We’re streaming the Lucinda cover played this night. Hurray For The Riff Raff are currently on tour in selected US cities throughout April before they head to Europe for a handful of shows in May.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue — Sennheiser cards at the soundboard mixed with a feed from talented house FOH Rob. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Axxa / Abraxas: March 21, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

April 2, 2014
By

IMG_7010

The Brooklyn band Axxa / Abraxas, like many of their Captured Tracks forebears, began in a bedroom. In this case, the bedroom of Atlanta native Ben Asbury, who drew influences near his hometown as well as his current home to create his self-titled debut. That record, produced by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, owes Taveniere’s main project an obvious debt, from the jangly guitars to a Jeremy Earl-style high falsetto vocal on some songs. What’s missed there, but more evident live, is the free-flowing style of the Elephant 6 collective from nearby Athens, Georgia, whose members are as legendary for their live shows as for their far-out styles. Bringing out these tunes live at Baby’s All Right must’ve been no easy task for Asbury and his bandmates, as the record’s slick production style doesn’t necessarily tell all of the band’s story. What you find out in the live setting is that the core of this music is Asbury’s skill at the axe; at age 23, he’s dropping some serious solos. Axxa / Abraxas feels more like a Brooklyn band at the start of their career than the polished crew you hear on the LP, and in many ways, that’s a good thing. One of this band’s greatest assets is youthful exuberance, and you could feel that in the room in a way you can’t on an album. You get the sense that, with more time with this material under their belt, it’ll only get better. Asbury’s best days are yet to come, and it’s going to be a great ride.

I recorded this set with the digital multitrack system at Baby’s All Right, set up by engineer David Lefcourt, together with an onstage pair of Naiant X-X omnidirectional microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Larkin Grimm: February 26, 2014 Trans Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The nice thing about raw talent is that it never really goes away. Larkin Grimm has a powerful and soulful voice that is so striking in its beauty. It is the keystone of her remarkable career. But Larkin last played shows regularly around the release of her last album in early 2012 — we recorded the CD release show. In the last two years, she’s been home raising her son and living a family life. But with a batch of new songs, it was time for Larkin Grimm to return to live performance and we were so happy that one of her first shows back was our NYCTaper event at Trans Pecos a few weeks ago. From the very first note of her set it was clear that she was happy to be back, and we were happy to see her. The voice was as strong as ever and it was perhaps the most relaxed and satisfying set we have ever seen Larkin play. She assembled an outstanding band and worked through a forty minute set with a couple of new songs, some old favorites and one traditional number. Larkin Grimm will next play at the Martin Bisi CD release show at Glasslands on April 15.

acidjack recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the wide-angle ORTF pattern at the stage lip, combined with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
