Thee Oh Sees: June 14, 2014 McCarren Park (Northside Fest) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Here at NYCTaper we’ve been big fans of the Northside Festival, and L Magazine and indeed the Stedmans for quite a while. And we hope the feelings are mutual — we’ve hosted multiple Northside showcases over the years and have been the subject of several L Magazine profiles too. But the show that seems to have been the pinnacle for the Fest has also been one of our favorites and that’s the Saturday afternoon mega-show at McCarren Park. In previous years we captured the uber Guided By Voices event in 2011. But this year it was a whole other level — one of the best live bands in the world playing in the bright sunshine in front of a few thousand adoring fans. Thee Oh Sees return to NYC after a brief “hiatus” was met with quite a bit of enthusiasm — by the time the band began their set much of the huge McCarren yard was filled. Indeed, John Dwyer joked that the next night’s show at Death By Audio would have a capacity one-fourteenth the size of this day’s crowd. After an introduction by Daniel Stedman, the band ripped through more than an hour of their intense garage-rock before the show’s curfew called an end to the set. We’ve previously discussed Dwyer’s move of the band to a trio but on the big stage in a huge venue, the three oh sees had no problem filling up the sound. As John announced, they’ll return to NYC in November and we’ll certainly be there again.

I recorded this set with the Neumann wide cards set up in front of the soundboard tent about 80 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine stereo board feed. The problem on this day was the wind. It was blowing and bursting right into the face of the stage, so that there is phasing that’s present in the board feed through the mics on stage and also in the sound projected by the speakers. There is no wind noise problem in the mics because of was in front of the tent, and protected by both the mic grills and big windscreens. Other than the wind-phasing, this is an excellent recording. Train Company: June 20, 2014 Bowery Electric – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If Chicago is the home of the blues, then perhaps its appropriate that one of the City’s best new-ish indie bands plays pretty killer blues. Train Company is more than just a blues band though — they’re a quintet of extremely talented musicians with a plethora of influences that adds up to a superb roots rock band. Train Company’s tour took them East and we were there when they played their first ever NYC show last week at Bowery Electric. The initial impression is that these guys are pros — belied by the fact that they’re mostly young men in their 20s. But between lead singer John Zozzaro’s wise growling vocals, the addition of a sax in several numbers, and killer organ/piano/keytar from Samuel Wyatt, Train Company has an authentic and compelling bluesy sound that really can’t miss. We’re streaming “Steve”, a number that captures all of these traits in one strong song.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards set up in front of the board about twenty feet from the stage and mixed with an excellent feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Nicole Atkins: June 18, 2014 Madison Square Park – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The last time we connected with Nicole Atkins her brilliant new album Slow Phaser had just been released and her tour was literally just beginning — it was the tour’s first show. That night at Bowery Ballroom there was a palpable excitement in the room and despite a huge winter storm the venue was quite filled. This album is a career-defining accomplishment and we were more than pleased when her new crack band brought the songs to life. Now with six months of shows behind them, we caught Nicole and her band earlier this month at Madison Square Park. This show was the first night of the Park’s concert series, run impeccably by the Madison Square Park Conservancy. On a beautiful summer-like night the crowd was a mix of fans, families on blankets, curious locals and park supporters but from the outset Nicole had their attention and kept it for the entire full-length show — even with the lively city noise behind us (including persistent police and ambulance sirens). There was been one change in the band which now contains one guitarist but has added a keyboardist who provided much color to the music. Nicole played much of Slow Phaser but also added a few older tracks. We’re streaming “Its Only Chemistry”, which ended the main set and contains a particularly strong vocal performance. In July, Nicole goes on a national tour in support of Nick Cave with two NYC dates, July 26 at Celebrate Brooklyn/Prospect Park and July 27 at Hammerstein Ballroom.

I recorded this show with the Neumann large diaphragm mics set up at the soundboard tent and mixed with a fine board feed. The Neumann LD’s are especially warm and wide in the outdoor setting and the mix is quite well balanced resulting in a superb recording. Enjoy!

Courtney Barnett: June 17, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Courtney Barnett is a natural. Her singing style is so comfortable and nonchalant that she’s been described as “slacker rock” by the lazy non-music media. The reality is that Courtney is an incredibly hard-working artist who has in the last two years founded her own label, played in an Australian super-group, released two EPs and toured incessantly. In fact, Courtney Barnett could be accurately compared to Ty Segall in terms of her indefatigable nature. In May she released her first album with Mom and Pop Music which is essentially re-release of her two EPs as a single long player. The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas is an outstanding collection of songs — really a stunningly mature collection for a artist in her mid-20s. Courtney has performed in NYC quite a bit in the last few months, each time attracting a larger crowd and earlier this month she sold out Bowery Ballroom. Although she’s not a local, this show had that celebratory air that comes with a first-Bowery-sellout event. The trio came out to a warm welcome and immediately launched into a run of four songs before even coming up for air. After she greeted the crowd and thanked all for their support, the band worked more casually through much of the album and a couple of new songs before Courtney played another new song solo for the encore. We’re streaming the main set final “History Eraser” on which the band raged before exiting the stage.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in our usual balcony location and mixed with an excellent feed by Bowery’s legendary FOH Kenny. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Kickback: June 10, 2014 Pianos – Flac/MP3/Streaming

For a band that has yet to release its first proper album, Chicago’s The Kickback certainly have received some high profile attention — from both Rolling Stone and Jim DeRogatis. Indeed, the debut album is currently being recorded with Jim Eno from Spoon. The New Music Seminar brought The Kickback to NYC a couple of weeks back for a showcase at Pianos. Its easy to see why the band is getting serious attention — they’re tight, the songwriting is excellent, the live energy is contagious, and bandleader Billy Yost has that x-factor the separates up-and-comers from never-will-be bands. The highlight of the set was the show’s finale, and absolutely stunning number called “Rob Our House” which we’re streaming below. The song draws upon the pure helpless rage of a crime victim filtered through Yost’s magnetic stage presence. The song left me speechless and definitely wanting to see more of the The Kickback when they return to NYC for CMJ in October.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted to the front plexiglass out of the soundboard booth and mixed with a feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Thee Oh Sees: June 15, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In between the last NYC shows by Thee Oh Sees — including that best-of-the-year night at 285 Kent — and their recent return to the City for two shows last week, there was talk of an extended “hiatus”. I’m not sure if John Dwyer heard the collective virtual groan of disappointment when word got out, but thankfully the “hiatus” wasn’t in fact any longer than a standard touring break for any conventional band. What actually ended up happening is that Dwyer moved from the Bay Area to LA and re-formed the band with a new drummer and bass player. The current version of Thee Oh Sees is indeed different, missing keys and backing vocals, but fortunately the quality remains the same. They are simply one of the best live bands around and Dwyer’s manic energy and the authentic nature of the garage sound makes them a must-see event. The Death By Audio show on Sunday night was one of those “secret” shows that sold out in about five minutes, but we were fortunate to snag a ticket. DBA remains one of our favorite venues in large part because of shows like this one — the place was packed to the gills, the crowd was nearly out of control and the band played perhaps the longest set in its history, but it still seemed like everyone was smiling and getting along. When the music and the show itself is this good, its ok to get bounced around a little, get sweaty and have some beer get “spilled”. It all comes out in the wash anyway.

I recorded this set with DPA omnis duct-taped to the ceiling about 15 feet from the stage and mixed lightly with a small amount of board feed to supplement the vocals. The sound quality is very consistent with the the room that night — a little messy but a whole lot of excellent. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten: June 13, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It is possible to virtually follow the evolution of the career of Sharon Van Etten by reading the the pages of this site. Our first experience with Sharon was over six years ago, during the period when it was just her, one guitar and a small amp. The Van Etten catalog from that period consisted primarily of folk songs about real pain and heartache and the singer’s live shows were excruciatingly raw and tender explications of that pain in small venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. I found myself literally brought to tears several times during this period by the sheer beauty of the songcraft and its brutally honest expression. We were also there during the period when her solo star shone bright enough to land her an opening gig at Bowery Ballroom, and headlining gigs at larger venues. The natural growth of Sharon’s music was to add a band, and we also captured her her first full band show, her first Bowery headline show, and the Bowery show on the Tramp tour. These days, Sharon still writes about the pain of love but from the perspective of the natural difficulties of a mature relationship. While I certainly miss the intimacy of the early years, its both comforting and rewarding to realize that the performer herself is in a much better place personally. Its also a relief as a fan to see that her own personal happiness has not compromised her ability to write beautifully honest music about human relationships. Sharon’s new album Are We There is her most accomplished work and is the natural next step for a performer who is constitutionally incapable of writing music that is not inherently honest. In the case of Are We There, its the complications in relationships that result from the baggage that we all bring to them. In the live setting, Sharon’s music is performed these days with a band of ultra-talented friends. The current live band includes Heather Woods Broderick, Doug Keith and new additions Brad Cook (Megafaun) and Darren Jessee (Ben Folds Five, Hotel Lights). At Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, the band’s recent run through Europe tightened the sound and we were treated to most of the new album and a few old songs. We are streaming “Tarifa”, which begins with the classic Van Etten solo folk style before the full band joins and it becomes a contemporary piece. Sharon’s current tour continues throughout much of the US and Canada before returning to Europe this Summer — dates here.

I recorded this show from our usual balcony rail position with the Sennheiser cards. Since the feed was not available to us on this night, this is a straight two channel audience recording. Nevertheless, the mix by Sharon’s current FOH Martin Gonzalez was outstanding and this is a superb recording. Enjoy!

The Antlers: June 17, 2014 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

There are many good things to be said about The Antlers, one of the most consistent and interesting bands to arise out of the Brooklyn scene in the past six years, but what’s most inspiring about them is how little they seem to care what others are doing. They’ve never been part of any kind of “-wave”; they’ve never even really found clear company among stylistically similar bands. If there were aspects of their sound that drew inspiration from elsewhere, the whole was something else entirely, animated by Peter Silberman’s unique vocal turns and the group’s collective faith in their listeners. Most bands in late-aughts Brooklyn wouldn’t have put out a record like the band’s debut, Hospice, a concept record from another time whose material was dark and whose sound was hardly going to bring out the tubthumpers who like to hit up Terminal 5 on Friday nights. The Antlers followed that up with Burst Apart, to date the closest thing they’ve done to a commercial record, even if it was hardly humpbacking a trend, either.

On this Tuesday night, the band showed up at the post-industrial chic and great-sounding back room venue at Rough Trade NYC and played us Familiars, the album they’d released that very day. Among the hardcore fans who showed up — who earned their tickets by buying the vinyl — there couldn’t have been a better way to be introduced to it. That whisper-quiet crowd got to hear these songs in their true voice, played by a band whose facility with the songs was hard-earned in the studio. Familiars won’t be everyone’s bag — even compared to the previous efforts, it’s a delicate effort that rewards patience — but for those who respect the band’s love of texture, of gorgeous songs that soar only when they really need to, it’s a classic. The songs unfolded like dreamscapes, rarely peaking until three or four minutes in, overlaid with Silberman’s literary, evocative lyrics. There are a good bit of horns on offer this time around, which I wouldn’t trust in less-sure hands, but The Antlers seem to have taken a page from Dan Bejar in that regard, using them at just the right moment. If I’m partial to any of the new songs as yet, it’d be the smooth-flowing “Director”, which feels like the product of several different phases of the band’s work all at once, and relies on elegiac guitar chords to move it forward.

It was a bit funny to hear Silberman, not yet out of his 20s, to say the band was “feeling the years”, but in an odd way it’s true. The Antlers aren’t the baby band we first witnessed back in early 2008; nor are they one of many flashes in the pan that have come since. The Antlers are a mature, established Brooklyn band, one that has rewarded their experience with an album of similar grace and maturity. See them throughout the U.S., Europe and the UK this summer and fall as they tour Familiars — this is a live experience you don’t want to miss.

I recorded this set with a flawless soundboard feed of the mix created by the band’s touring engineer Dan Seiders, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality reflects Seiders’ years of experience mixing the band and the flawless nature of the room, making for a live album quality experience. Enjoy!

La Sera: May 10, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Katy Goodman is authentically one of the nicest people in the indie music scene. Its hard to fathom how someone could be so positive, always smiling and so friendly to seemingly anyone she encounters. Its very easy to root for the success of someone with her disposition — and its especially true given the excellent quality of La Sera’s new album Hour Of The Dawn. At the CD release show for the album at Baby’s All Right last month, La Sera played to a packed room of admirers and the smiles were all around. The band played through seven of the nine tracks of Hour and a couple of older songs before closing the set with the title track. We’re streaming that performance below. It featured an extended guitar interplay between Todd Wisenbaker and Greta Morgan — during which Katy jumped into the crowd and played her bass among the fans. The humorous part of the show and part of what makes Katy so likeable is that she spent much of the encore break apologizing to the fan who got hit by the neck of the bass in the audience. The fan said no problem, all was forgiven, and the band ended the set with a rollicking encore. La Sera will begin a European tour in May (dates here), that includes an appearance at the Primavera Sound Festival.

This set was recorded on the installed Multitrack system at Baby’s All Right by sound tech Devin Foley and we mixed the raw files. The sound is pro-quality. Enjoy!

We’ve written about Wilco and Jeff Tweedy a lot in the years of this site, in part because Wilco continue to be supportive of what we tapers do, but more importantly because they’ve continued to refine and expand their live show, making for something worth recording. For Jeff Tweedy’s inaugural Mountain Jam, Tweedy decided to serve up a slew of new songs (twelve, to be exact) , as well as some of the best-loved Wilco classics including “Jesus, Etc.” and “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”, as well as the always-poignant “California Stars” from the band’s collaboration with Billy Bragg. The new tunes will appear on Tweedy’s forthcoming album with his son, Spencer, entitled Sukierae, which drops on September 16.

While the Wilco classics are always welcome, the new material was this set’s standout. Tweedy managed to get the audience to sing along to “Slow Love” despite that none of us had heard it before, and “Diamond Light” already looks like another great “jam” song, with a fiery guitar outro that begs for improvisation. There’s plenty more we could say about the set, but for Tweedy fans, the reason to hear this will be clear, and we want to get it out there as quickly as possible. Without further ado, here you go.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones from an area to the immediate right of the soundboard. Despite this being a wide-open outdoor show at a decent distance from the stage, the vocals and general PA sound is clear and direct, and an excellent representation of this performance. Enjoy!
