The Dismemberment Plan: October 18, 2013 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Before Pitchfork anointed The Dismemberment Plan‘s third LP Emergency & I as the best album of 1999 (and there were some good ones that year), The Plan were a quirky, well-loved cult band from Washington, DC, but they were hardly a household name even among dedicated indie fans. I first saw them in 1996, around the time of release of !, their first record, when their sound was at its most freeform and spastic. The bill was The Plan, first, then Smart Went Crazy, then Archers of Loaf. Even in that eclectic company, I remember my main impression of The Dismemberment Plan being this band is weird. That late-90s Pitchfork crew weren’t kidding when it came to extolling the band’s uniqueness. They were also right when they foretold the Plan’s influence on a number of sounds that would come to commercial fruition in the coming decade. None of that benefited the band itself much (of course), but all you R&B and dance-copping indie bands of the aughts, you can tip your hats now, thanks.

The Dismemberment Plan, in the end, were way too weird to make it “big” in the way bands of the era like Modest Mouse somehow managed to. However refined the pop technique on Emergency & I and its worthy successor, Change, this was still not a band that fit will onto “alternative” radio or manning huge festival stages. In the same way that cult faves like Neutral Milk Hotel now sell out venues three or four times bigger than what they played during their halcyon days, it felt really weird to see The Dismemberment Plan playing the Bowery Presents‘ midtown behemoth Terminal 5 (albeit with the top balcony closed). But after seeing the band in action in that space, I think I’d sold them short. The band’s four members had more room than they needed on the huge stage, but the sound they put out was massive yet focused enough to give T5 a feel reminiscent of their old club shows. The band — frontman Travis Morrison in particular — not only looks like they’re still on their game, they sound like it.

That’s another critical distinction between The Dismemberment Plan and certain other ’90s acts taking their victory laps. This show wasn’t some nostalgia trip or “one time only” reunion. Rather, The Plan were here for a purpose, promoting their new Partisan Records release Uncanney Valley, an album that’s been well-received to date and stands to add several new standout tracks to the live show. The set opener, “Invisible” was one of my favorites, as was the melancholy, “Daddy Was A Real Good Dancer”. The record grew out of the band’s reunion shows for the Emergency & I vinyl release, after the four discovered they had new ideas to explore. The hope is that Uncanney Valley is the beginning of a new phase, not the end.

Of course, for those nostalgic for older stuff, this 90-minute set hit pretty much all the biggest highlights. For me, that meant “The City”, “You Are Invited” and “What Do You Want Me To Say” from Emergency & I, “Time Bomb” and “The Face of the Earth” from Change, and “OK Jokes Over” from !, among many others. But the set closer — “Ice of Boston” from The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified, that made for the most Dismemberment Plan-moment of all, as Morrison invited the crowd to join the band onstage. Not every band can turn a song about a cold, depressing New Year’s Eve drinking alone in Boston into an edifying rave-up. But then, no other band is quite like The Plan.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a super-clean Sound Devices preamp to capture the maximum amount of clean, direct sound. The recording is excellent. Enjoy!

Waxahatchee: September 6, 2013 Kennedy Theatre, Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, the first time we saw Katie Crutchfield as Waxahatchee, she had to perform an impromptu solo set. Even then, we were impressed by the clarity of her songwriting and the conviction with which she sings. Not long after, her latest record for Don GiovanniCerulean Salt became a critics’ favorite.

This Waxahatchee show, at the Hopscotch Music Festival, gave a more complete picture of what Crutchfield can do. Kicking off with a  song from her other project Great Thunder, Crutchfield led us through a quick mini-tour of the Waxahatchee canon, including renditions of some of the songs from Cerulean Salt and its predecessor American Weekend that more clearly evoked Crutchfield’s punk roots. “Noccalula”, streaming below, was completely transformed from the ultra-lo-fi analog recording from American Weekend; likewise, Cerulean Salt numbers like “Lively” were a good bit less subdued at high volume. But it’s still the set closer, “You’re Damaged”, that clinches everything great about Waxahatchee. Touching without being cloying and catchy as hell, it’s the strongest testament yet to Crutchfield’s songwriting, and one we were thrilled to see, finally, with a full band.

Villages: September 6, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Kennedy Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

One of the best things about festivals like Hopscotch Music Festival is being exposed not just to artists you know you want to see, but ones you didn’t know you wanted to see. I wasn’t aware of Asheville, NC based Ross Gentry, who records as Villages, before he took the stage at Kennedy Theater on the second night. But as soon as Gentry began creating his custom-made soundscape, I was grateful to be in the right place to hear the work of this brilliant emerging artist in the world of ambient and drone music. After a frantic day of day shows and main stage recording, sitting in the cool, dark Kennedy Theater for this Villages set felt like a reset button on the whole day. During this piece, you can hear the wash of running water, keyboards, guitars, found sounds and more combine to create an organic whole that is as soothing as it is thought-provoking.

At times it’s difficult with this kind of music to actually understand what the artist is doing, so I asked Ross to explain. Here is how this set was constructed:

All of the sounds I use are created using organic instruments and field recordings. My sets basically consists of a series of tape loops, which were present on stage, as well as electric guitar which was running through a series of effects pedals. The laptop itself it basically a means of triggering field recordings and various atmospheres, and recording and looping my guitar and tapes to further process and expand the sounds. It’s a very open and evolving process. It certainly leaves a lot of room to really feel out a space and develop pieces naturally.

The result on this night was a piece I felt was a beautiful meditation on the human experience, an oasis of calm in the midst of a frantic (but fun) festival. Gentry’s work was some of the most moving and powerful that I experienced at the entire festival and I hope more fans have a chance to experience his work. This recording was made with Schoeps MK41 microphones from an ideal spot in the venue. The recording captures the feel of the room very well and makes for a particularly good listen on headphones. Enjoy!

Speedy Ortiz: September 6, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Kennedy Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Speedy Ortiz is the aptly-named recording project of Sadie Dupuis, formerly vocalist/guitarist of the Brooklyn band (and NYCTaper Northside showcase vets) Quilty. This year’s very-well-received full-length debut on Carpark Records, Major Arcana, shows the full potential of Dupuis’ sound when joined to a band, who first recorded with her on 2012’s Sports EP. If Quilty echoed the heavy-tinged sound of Veruca Salt almost to a tee at points, Speedy Ortiz draws from a broader palette of influences, including Tuscadero, Slant 6 and Archers of Loaf to name a few. But not only can Dupuis write a hell of a catchy song, but she stands out both for having a singing voice that she can throttle up from sweet to scream at a moment’s notice. While her contemporaries’ lyrics often tend to word salad to fill space between riffs, Dupuis’ confessional style gives you something to think about — which led Pitchfork to make a favorable comparison to Liz Phair in their review of Major Arcana.

This Hopscotch Music Festival set by the band was one of the more hotly-anticipated of the festival for me, having missed several of the Northampton, MA band’s local shows. To the surprise of no one, the band’s live show brought out the harder element of their sound, while more surprisingly still giving Dupuis’ vocals plenty of room to shine in the mix. The band didn’t spend much time on chitchat during a short-but-sweet set that covered many of Major Arcana‘s best tracks plus some more obscure releases like the 7″ release “Taylor Swift” and two tracks from Sports, including one of my favorites, “Silver Spring”. Dupuis has always had a knack for songwriting, and with this unit cohering around that skill, I’d expect Speedy Ortiz to see a lot more positive press in their future.

Pop. 1280: August 16, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I’d heard nothing but good things about Pop. 1280 since my NC buddy David Schwentker posted their Hopscotch Festival recording here from last year. It’s not just about the dark, synth-driven sound or the vocals that sound like the voice of the apocalypse. It’s about how they convert the sound of their excellent records, including this year’s Imps of Perversion on Sacred Bones, into a live show that, even in the late slot at Mercury Lounge, will wake you the hell up. The band tore through a short set of material that focused almost exclusively on Imps of Perversion, with one track from 2011’s The Horror making an appearance. Compared to the Hopscotch set, Pop. 1280’s sound has become even more refined and able to dominate a crowd, and we look forward to a longer engagement in the future.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for Mercury Lounge, with Schoeps MK41 microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from head engineer Kevin Mazzarelli. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Chuck Johnson: May 26, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After getting a preview of what was to come last year at Hopscotch Music Festival, we expected Chuck Johnson‘s 2013 record Crows In the Basilica to be an important part of the conversation on best guitar records of the year. That was confirmed both by Basilica’s release on Three Lobed Recordings this spring, as well as by this performance at Mercury Lounge, where Chuck demonstrated that the subtle brilliance of his compositions can’t be contained by the studio.

Chuck and his contemporaries are almost always categorized by the label “American Primitive”, a sub genre of guitar playing shared with its progenitor John Fahey and many other worthy players, but the term “primitive” as understood by most is misleading. Rather than suggesting a simplicity or naïveté to the material, American Primitive is best understood as a recognition of the ability of these players to use highly complex guitar arrangements that link the instrument’s present with its more elemental, folk-derived origins. Before venturing out as a solo player, Johnson played in well-regarded North Carolina bands like Shark Quest and the string trio Idyll Swords, but it is here where Johnson’s skill on guitar is best appreciated. We hope you will enjoy this moving set of music from Johnson and be on the lookout for his future shows.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed provided by Mercury team. Given that it is a recording of a single instrument, the recording heavily favors the soundboard feed, with a bit of audience mics mixed in to give a feel of the room. It is an excellent recording. French Films: June 4, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Finnish band French Films isn’t yet well-known here in the U.S., but that seems poised to change. Like their fellow travelers Hooded Fang, who they joined for this Mercury Lounge bill, they have a reasonably deep repertoire (they formed in 2010) as well as the chops to deliver it live. Taking their cues sonically from Beatlesque pop and the early-aughts New Wave revival, the band’s sound combines their propensity for hummable hooks with a darker tinged edge. What they’ve done so far was good enough to earn them a European Border Breakers Award, which honors the best new musical acts across Europe, and they are using that to jumpstart their foray into the U.S., which also included a show at Glasslands a few days before this show. This set, which drew the largest crowd of the night, found them playing their European hit, “Escape In The Afternoon”, along with material from this year’s release, White Orchid. One of the band members noted his attendance at an early Strokes show at this same venue, and I feel like a little pixie dust from those legendary shows from last decade rubbed off on these guys and their excellent set as well.

Hooded Fang: June 4, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s impossible not to like the Toronto band Hooded Fang, who play a brand of rather American-tinged pop-inflected punk that always draws a crowd, and often a moshpit. While they’re just getting their due here in America (this was only their second NYC show), they’re actually on their third record, this year’s Gravez, which is as concise a burst of infectious new guitar music as I’ve heard this side of Parquet Courts.

This show at Mercury Lounge matched Hooded Fang up with a diverse cast of U.S. and international acts, including Brooklyn’s Pow Wow and Total Slacker as well as Finland’s French Films (that recording coming soon). As I expected from listening to the record, the Fang’s set put the emphasis solidly on fun, with new tracks like “Ode To Subterrania” delivering a light take on that staple of early-20s slackerdom, living in a basement. My other favorite, “Trasher”, echoes mid-to-late 80s postpunk, in roughly the vein of the Pixies, making a nice counterpoint to some of the more straight-ahead rocking tracks. Most of Gravez was played, but the band tore through those songs so fast that it left time for older fare from their second record, Tosta Mista, including the set closer, “Vacationation”. Hooded Fang promise to be one of the most exciting bands of their kind to hit the scene this year, and I hope more New York appearances are in the offing.

Tom Carter: May 25, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After a health scare sidelined him for much of last year, it was especially moving to see the guitar wizard Tom Carter back in action on Memorial Day weekend at Mercury Lounge. The Charalambides guitarist took us on an emotional journey through rare material that began with the “Nancy’s Song” (a renamed version of “Colors For N” from the Whispers to Infinity CD-R), followed by “August Is All” from the Northern Spy Records Clandestine Cassette series, and closing with “Numinous”, a very limited and out-of-print 2010 cassette-only release from Prairie Fire Tapes. While some live recordings can’t capture the magic of being in the room, I like to think this is exactly the kind that rewards repeat listening. The delicate but majestic tones of “Numinous” felt like the right choice for an artist whose comeback should continue going strong.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the Mercury Lounge team, plus Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

D. Charles Speer & the Helix: May 25, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We were thrilled to get a chance over Memorial Day weekend to check with D. Charles Speer & the Helix. We followed frontman Dave Shuford’s other band, Rhyton, quite a bit last year (not to mention our love for the separate work of Helix keys man Hans Chew). Now, after two Rhyton albums, Shuford is re-focusing on the Speer project, and if the material we heard on this night at Mercury Lounge is any indication, they have some good stuff up their sleeves. Two of our favorites from this set were “Cretan Lords”, which boasts inspired guitar work that alludes to the style of the Greek island for which it’s named, as well as the new midtempo psych-boogie burner “Doubled Exposure,” which adds some reggae flavor to the band’s already-complex stylistic mix. We also loved the band’s cover of the Jim Jackson classic, “Bootlegger’s Blues”. Keep an eye out for a new record from the Speer gang in the relatively near future, but until then, we hope this tides you over.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for this venue, with a soundboard feed from the Mercury FOH team and Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones. There are some issues with a vocal mic during the first song, “Red Clay Road” and light DI noise can be heard at especially quiet points during some numbers. Overall, though, the sound quality is outstanding per our usual for this venue. Enjoy!
