Joan of Arc: August 10, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Whether you find Joan of Arc frustrating or incredible is likely to come down to your overall view of what rock music is about: If you hold the attitude of “I am here, you must entertain me with classics and catchy tunes”, you are likely to be in the former camp.  You’re also probably that person that customizes every dinner order beyond recognition. A sauce-on-the-sider, if you will. People like you would do well to avoid bands like Joan of Arc, who tend to reward the other type of listener, who enjoys being challenged, who enjoys taking in the breadth of an artist’s vision, and who would rather see something new than something familiar.

Which is not to say that this set by Tim Kinsella’s main project of the past 15 years was not thoroughly entertaining. Kinsella, who made his name in Cap’n Jazz before that band split up (other than their brief reunion last summer that we recorded HERE and HERE), can put on a fierce live show, and keep some wacky stage banter in the mix as well. Eschewing emo-or-whatever-you-call-it tradition, Joan of Arc’s set is heavy on variety – a short burst of almost-pure pop here, a lengthy instrumental there. This set had both, as well as encore songs from another Kinsella side project, Owls. The band’s virtuosity couldn’t be denied – they rocked, time signature or structure-of-the-moment be damned. Songs thrive on dense, angular riffs and plaintive vocals. The resulting recording is a thing of beauty as well – as clear an indication if there ever was one that a small club, excellent sound engineer (Kevin, as usual) and band that knows what they’re doing is an unbeatable combination.

Kevin’s soundboard feed blended perfectly with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones, and the resulting recording is clear, crisp and excellent. Enjoy!

Woods: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Full Set

We caught Woods this summer in the unlikely Northside Festival venue of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church (that recording here), but it was an equally special treat to see them play the best-sounding venue in Manhattan, Bowery Ballroom. Although the set hewed fairly closely to what we saw back in June, no two Woods shows are alike, and indeed, the jam-heavy favorites “Bend Beyond” and “I Was Gone” took different directions than they did back at St. Cecilia’s. We also got a huge treat in the form of the band’s cover of the Graham Nash tune “Military Madness” as their final song. As at St. Cecilia’s, the band added an organ player to give them a bigger, more psychedelic sound, and the Bowery’s sound system was mixed to perfection.

Befitting the high quality sound in the room, we came out with a lot of high quality gear to record this show, including a soundboard feed and two sets of mics. The result is undoubtedly our best recording of Woods to date. Enjoy!

The War On Drugs released Slave Ambient this past week. Its an album that’s been in the works for a couple of years, since the 2008 release of their excellent Secretly Canadian Records debut Wagonwheel Blues. But in a way, its an album that’s been waiting much longer for its release. The band’s leader Adam Granduciel incorporated some older songs into the album and spent many months tweaking the mixes, reworking arrangements, and perfecting what will undoubtedly become one of 2011’s best albums. When we recorded The War On Drugs in January, the new songs were beginning to take shape, but when the album versions were released, the positive developments were striking. On Friday at Cameo Gallery, The War On Drugs performed a superb ninety-minute set that consisted primarily of Slave Ambient material — eight of the album’s twelve songs were played. Of the new songs, the second-slotted “Baby Missiles” was particularly tight and focused and we’re streaming it below. Other highlights included the jammed transition from “It’s Your Destiny” into “I Was There”, and the eighteen-minute encore of “A Needle In Your Eye #16” with an extended guitar and sampled-driven ambient jam. The War On Drugs will be touring throughout the Fall. While they are on a current East and Midwest swing, they will tour Europe in September, and return to the US in October.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted in the center of the room in front of the soundboard booth and raised to 12 feet. The room mics were mixed with a mono board feed to accentuate the vocals, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Psychic Paramount: July 26, 2011 Union Pool – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

New York crowds are notoriously, almost epically jaded. As much as bands love the exposure of America’s largest city and cultural capital, they also tend to be dispirited by the “show me” attitude of crowds that have seen it all before. Being from Brooklyn themselves, The Psychic Paramount must know this all too well – which is why they pulled out all the stops at Union Pool on a recent Tuesday night to deliver a jaw-dropping set that was one of the most incredible I have seen this year. Cloaked for the duration in thick billows of smoke, their set, culled primarily from their latest release, II, left the crowd in awe at the vortex of sound coming from this three-man band. I don’t know that I have been to another show this year that had as many audience members actually talking about the show when it was over – and stark silent during. These instrumental songs seethe with emotion; even staring into shadows in the smoke, you can’t help but be moved by them. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that they are rendered by players of obvious talent and technical skill – bassist Ben Armstrong and guitarist Drew St. Ivany first met in the now-defunct art-noise-jazz band Laddio Bolocko, a less rock n’ roll but no less compelling outfit, and drummer Jeff Conaway is (as in most three pieces) the glue that gives the band its propulsive, driving sound. Bands like TPP are the artists that live shows were made for – even this fine recording cannot capture their brilliance. Mark your calendars, folks – their next show is September 3 right here in Brooklyn at a free show at the Aviator Sports Complex with White Hills, Pictureplane, Wise Blood and others, and after that, our friends in the UK can catch them at the always-legendary ATP Nightmare Before Christmas. Do it. They’ll blow your mind.

I recorded this set with both the DPA microphones set up in our usual spot in the venue, and a soundboard feed. At the band’s request, only the microphone portion is being used, as they felt it provided a more natural, balanced sound. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: August 10, 2011 Wantagh NY – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have always personally liked Deer Tick, all the way back to meeting John McCauley for the first time in early 2008. He seemed genuine and the rootsy nature of the band’s music reflected that sincerity. As Deer Tick has grown in stature and size, its been easy to root for them. So when we were contacted by the Tommy Brull Foundation about recording their charity concert on Long Island, it came as no surprise the Deer Tick had agreed to headline the show. The Foundation was organized in 2008 to celebrate the life of Tommy who passed away at the age of 23, and it supports a variety of causes in his memory that benefit disabled children. On Wednesday at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh, Deer Tick truly gave it their all for the cause, as they performed a non-stop set that spanned two hours and contained thirty songs. The set culled tracks from all three of their releases, and also featured five new songs that will appear on an album to be released in October. We are streaming one of the stronger new tracks “Funny Word”. The band also let it all hang out and played a bunch of eclectic covers, including the Replacements song we posted on Friday.

I recorded this set with a very well-balanced soundboard feed mixed with the DPA cardioid microphones placed at the center of the room. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Deer Tick Covered The Replacements – MP3 Download + Streaming Song

In 1985, the Replacements were at their peak. After the breakthrough success of the brilliant Let It Be, the band’s follow-up album was arguably a more consistently excellent release and stands today as the pinnacle of the Replacements catalog. Tim was the first Replacements album on Sire Records, and sadly the last album with original guitarist Bob Stinson. Two years later, Pleased To Meet Me was a clear step down from Tim. The band’s final three albums each represented a decrease in quality from the previous one, so that by the time the Replacements broke up in 1990, their creative output was spent.

Among the best of the current list of bands that exhibit a clear Replacements influence are Titus Andronicus and Deer Tick. Ian O’Neil is a former member of Titus and current guitarist for Deer Tick, and on Wednesday night with Deer Tick, Ian and John McCauley traded vocals on “Waitress in the Sky”. While several other tracks from Tim are clear standouts, “Waitress” is a short number with a bunch of earworm lines. Paul Westerberg is said to have written this from the unsympathetic perspective of the nasty passengers with whom flight attendants have to deal.

Lucero: July 23, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

A few years ago I saw a Lucero concert for the first time and was promptly blown away.  With their amalgam of southern rock, alt country and punk, I assumed that seeing them perform in a small bar-type venue in close proximity to a drunken, unruly horde would be where they would truly shine and the pinnacle of seeing them live.  Suffice to say, I got my wish.  When a little bird told me that a band called Nobody’s Darlings booked for a particular Saturday night at Mercury Lounge was, in fact, going to be a “secret” show by Lucero, I grabbed tickets as soon as they went on sale.  Judging by the throng that showed up that night, it obviously didn’t stay a secret.  Being in the midst of the Warped Tour, the band was eager to stretch its collective legs and play a longer and more varied setlist than they had been doing.  The crowd, wanting a good time and obviously as excited to see the band as I was, gave the boys a hero’s welcome.  And Lucero didn’t disappoint.  Including songs from nearly all of their albums, they also threw in a handful of new tracks as a preview of their next disc, slated for release early next year.  Put it all together and the concert was everything I had imagined it would be.

With Lucero’s engineer, Justin, joining always-excellent house engineer, Kevin, at the controls, the sound was perfectly dialed in for the show.  Our mics, flying dead-center in the venue, combined with a soundboard feed has resulted in a superb recording.  I hope you like what you hear as much as I did.  Enjoy!

Widowspeak: August 2, 2011 Glasslands and June 30, 2011 285 Kent – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The folks over at PopGun Booking have a deserved reputation for putting some of the best up-and-coming acts on the Glasslands stage months and years before the wider public notices. When I saw Widowspeak back in March, they were a very new band with almost no recorded output, but they were already very much on their game as performers, with many great songs already in the hopper. Almost five months later to the day, and the band was back at Glasslands celebrating the release of their self-titled debut record on the hot Brooklyn imprint Captured Tracks.  The band’s set was if anything more confident and polished than the March show, and unsurprisingly featured more songs, including the newer tracks “Gun Shy”, “Hard Times”, “Half Awake” and a new number I could not identify by name (just bought the album this morning). “Half Awake,” being performed live for the first time, is one of the most somber tunes in the band’s catalog, but it is beautiful in its bleakness.

We also caught another great performance from the band back in June, presented by Brooklyn promoter ToddP at the DIY venue 285 Kent next door. This set sounds fantastic, and although a bit shorter than the Glasslands set, has many of the band’s strongest songs, including the standout new single “Gun Shy”. I’m also a sucker for the band’s cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” which they played at the show I saw back in March, and is also the b-side of the “Gun Shy” single.

The 285 Kent set was recorded with Neumann microphones and a soundboard feed from an ideal location in the venue that avoided a lot of the chatter going on. The Glasslands recording was made with perfectly situated Schoeps microphones and a great soundboard feed from Derek, but there is a light buzzing emanating from an onstage monitor that is captured in the board feed. With that caveat (and a bit of crowd chatter during a few songs), that recording is also excellent. Enjoy!

We have been extolling the virtues of The Loom for three years now, and lately others have followed, including The New York Times, Paste Magazine and The New Yorker. The band has played four shows that we have presented, including most recently our Northside Festival show earlier this Summer. Their set at Northside featured some new material, songs which continue the strength of this band — harmonies, superb instrumentation, and fine songwriting. We were heartened to learn that The Loom should be announcing some exciting news in the near future that will assure a wider audience for them and finally see the release of Teeth, their first full-length record and an album that will cement their position among the best of today’s Americana music. We have selected “The Middle Distance” to stream below. At Public Assembly it was an energetic performance of one of the best tracks from Teeth. The Loom will next be performing at the Daytrotter Barnstorming tour that will come to upstate Ghent New York later this month.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones mounted above the soundboard room, and mixed it with a board feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Heartless Bastards: July 24, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

It’s hard not to like the Heartless Bastards.  They’re one of those bands that never lets you down performance-wise, that’s always on their game, that always gives their fans something special.  This pair of shows at Mercury Lounge (our recording of night 1 here) certainly qualifies as that, as the band played these sets in “acoustic” (but really just sans-drummer) mode, and showed off considerable new material.  The most immediate effect of going drummerless was to focus even more attention on lead vocalist Erika Wennerstrom’s old-soul voice.  The opening lines of one of my Bastards favorites, “Done Got Old” proved she can carry a show without any accompaniment at all, and she remained note-perfect throughout a 90-minute set that was a bit longer than Saturday’s performance.  Most of this group stood respectfully as Erika, Jesse and Mark debuted new numbers like “Skin and Bones,” and the Western-tinged “The Arrow Killed the Beast.”  While the new record will not be acoustic, and some of the material was so new it didn’t even have names, what we heard on this night showed the level of promise we’ve come to expect from this band.  As Johnny mentioned in his review of the Saturday show, this only ups the anticipation for the new record.

I recorded this set from the same spot that Johnny used for the Saturday recording, focusing the sound a bit more toward the perfectly balanced soundboard feed from Kevin at the Mercury Lounge.  As with Saturday’s recording, the sound quality is outstanding.  Enjoy!
