When I was told I had to track down this show because it was, as a friend told me, “completely bonkers”, I didn’t quite know what to expect. After all, Hiss Golden Messenger is a band rarely seen in the same configuration twice, as I noted in my recent review of the Rough Trade show that featured the most consistent band that MC Taylor has toured with in years. But this friend doesn’t make  statement like that lightly, so I figured I would search this thing out.

I shouldn’t have been surprised that Dan Schram, likely the most prolific taper in the Triangle right now, had pulled this off. He offered me the raw tracks, which he said, quality-wise, weren’t very good. I volunteered, amateur though I am, to work what magic I had available on them. In my humble opinion, what you’ll hear below is pretty damn great.

The result is what you hear below. Whether “bonkers” or not is a matter of how you use that word, but it’s certainly unique, even by HGM standards. First of all, it wasn’t supposed to occur at Durham’s Motorco at all. Part of a summer series in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, this HGM show ended up at the indoor venue after the weather failed to cooperate and thunderstorms shut the original plan down. Then there’s how this show begins, surely the first and only time that the words of Martin Luther King will be intoned over the opening song, the Haw discard “Brother, Do You Know the Road?”. (As my respect for Taylor could not be clearer, I don’t mind saying that cutting that track is not something I quite understand). The song also led off the first full-band HGM performance I ever saw, and if anything, this version was even more powerful vocally.

The band itself was an unusual assemblage of local and less-local musicians, too, including longtime collaborators Scott Hirsch and Terry Lonergan, to Black Twig Pickers and Pelt’s Nathan Bowles, to one of his new band’s now-permanent members, Matt Douglas on saxophone. In my ways, this show felt like a pivot point in the band’s live style, turning them in the direction ultimately followed on Lateness of Dancers and its subsequent tour. Together the group lent new depth to less-played Haw tracks like “Cheerwine Easter” and “Sweet As John Hurt”, with “Cheerwine” unfolding into a psychedelic jam (perhaps it wasn’t a coincidence that Taylor talked a lot about hippies during this set). If a better version of that song has been played by this band, I would love to hear it. You could say the same thing about the “Jesus Shot Me In the Head” that follows a similar route later in the set, where Douglas, guitarist Chris Boerner and keyboardist James Wallace really let fly.

Maybe some of Taylor’s particular passion flowed from the presence of his son Elijah in the audience, who was the subject of “I’ve Got A Name for the Newborn Child”. If that could be felt in the extra little runs here and there, in the easygoing vibe on the stage, then it’s a double blessing that he came along. Just be to be sure nothing about this show would be average, Taylor also invited the boy on stage for the show’s final “bonkers” moment, a two-cover encore of JJ Cale’s “Hey Baby” (in honor of his then-recent passing), followed by Waylon Jennings’ “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?”. For an artist who has had many fine outings of late, this set may well represent this band’s finest turn yet. Even if it’s not brand-new, we felt like it was important to share, and hope you agree.

As noted, I didn’t record this set, and Dan isn’t entirely sure what mic he was using either. More or less what’s happening here is a mono board feed and a single microphone turned into what you hear below. In my opinion, the sound quality is outstanding. Thanks to Dan for sharing the opportunity to put this out there.

Hiss Golden Messenger’s second-to-last West Coast show is tonight at the Independent in San Francisco, followed by a show on the 13th at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in LA. After that, they’re off to England and Europe for the rest of this year, resuming touring out there in February. Check the dates here.

Woods: November 6, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In the final days of the great Death By Audio, the appearance of Woods as a special guest on Thursday was appropriate on so many levels. Of all the accomplished DIY bands of Brooklyn in the aughts, Woods perhaps best epitomized the ability to both stay true to your roots while evolving as a band. In short, they’ve managed to grow in their abilities and their popularity without selling out. The same can be said for Death By Audio, a venue that perfected a very workman-like authentic DIY aesthetic — consistently booking local and out of town touring bands while mixing in the occasional huge show. The special feature of this show was that Woods were reunited with founding member G. Lucas Crane, who parted ways with the group a few years ago to pursue his solo projects and also to concentrate on his work as one of the primary forces behind the Silent Barn. Lucas performed a brief solo set, mixing his special cassettes in a soundscape that segued nicely into the opening of the Woods set as the band joined him onstage in a seamless transition into an epic 15-minute “Bend Beyond”. We’ve seen several mindbending versions of this song over the years, but this take on ‘Beyond’ was truly remarkable as the band pushed the boundaries of the song through several jam sequences undoubtedly motivated by the historical nature of the occasion. We are streaming it below.

When ‘Beyond’ ended and Lucas left the stage, one would think that there would have been a little letdown, but this was clearly not the case. Woods was on a mission — whether it be welcoming old friend Alex Bleeker on “Cali In A Cup”, or dedicating “It Ain’t Easy” to the late Brooklyn musician and band friend Jamie Ewing, breaking out old material (“Rain On”), or multiple mentions and thanks to Edan and Death By Audio. This is a band who knows from whence they came and returned to old haunts to pay tribute in the best way possible, by playing a show that is perhaps the best night we’ve had all year. The capacity crowd seemed to feel that same way as they simply would not let the band leave despite equipment problems. When Edan located a spare drum pedal all was fixed and the show went on. The first of two encores was the band’s superb take on the Pink Floyd classic “Green Is The Colour”, a recent nyctaper recording of which ended up on a split single of Woods and MV+EE takes on the song on Piccadilly Records. The show ended with another of the band’s anthems, “Be All Be Easy”, which we are also streaming below.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a small stand in the front and center of the stage and mixed the on-stage sound with an excellent soundboard mix provided by DBA’s Edan. The mix combines primarily vocals and drums from the board complimenting the clear guitar and bass from the stage. The sound quality is simply stunning. Enjoy!

Mainland: October 23, 2014 – NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Mainland seems poised for fairly certain success. They write instantly likeable pop songs and have all of the other ingredients that make bands of their ilk popular — looks, personality and obvious musical chops. We invited Mainland to play a top of the bill spot on our CMJ Day Party in large part because it seemed so obvious when we first heard their music that this band will be in the fastlane to big things in the very near future. At this point, their outstanding debut EP Shiner is the entirety of their recorded output, but a full length album is not far behind. And apparently we’re not alone, as Mainland has garnered some great press surrounding CMJ and elsewhere, including a high profile piece in Interview. The band’s appearance at our show was exactly what we had hoped for — a very well attended high-energy set which included Shiner tracks (the title track streaming below) and several new numbers we anticipate will appear on their forthcoming long player. Mainland will next perform in NYC next weekend, November 15 and 16 at the Gramercy Theatre, opening for The Matches.

Acidjack recorded this show in the exact same manner as the previous sets from this show (Schoeps Onstage + SBD) and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

August Wells is a new band filled with an accomplished cast of incredible performers. Led by Ken Griffin, best known for having recorded several well-liked records in the mid-90s with the Irish outfit Rollerskate Skinny, whose album Horsedrawn Wishes remains an essential of the Irish music scene. The band’s cast also includes pianist John Rauchenberger, who has played with a wide range of bands including The Favourite Sons, Maggie Estep, and J.C Morrison; horn player Louis Schwadron, who leads the band Sky White Tiger and has played with Radiohead, David Bowie, Elton John, and Grizzly Bear, among others; and violinist/composer Leyna Marika Papach, who has been responsible for numerous scores for film, theater and dance. Griffin’s sound has matured beyond Rollerskate Skinny, showing a melancholy that seem to come more easily with the years. “It’s all as beautiful as ever / I hope somehow it gets to stay that way” Griffin sings on “Beautiful as Ever”. There’s a wistfulness in this and many of Griffin’s other lines, but also hope. Somehow, things might stay that way.

Griffin and co. took the stage just before Steve Gunn on this night at Rough Trade, and were greeted with an audience ripe for this kind of music. We look forward to seeing this new band more around the city, as they’ve already played dates at Union Pool, Baby’s All Right, and Le Poisson Rouge, among others. The band’s next appearance comes this Sunday at the Scratcher Sessions at the legendary East Village bar at 7:30 p.m. The band also has upcoming shows planned with The Frames and on the Irish TV show Other Voices.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Steve Gunn recording, with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from engineer Nick. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Prettiots are that practiced sound of not giving a fuck. The New York trio, comprised of Kay Kasperhauser, Lulu Prat and Rachel Trachtenburg play songs that touch on many of the woes of a woman in late teenhood to her early twenties — boys, high school, self-loathing, etc. and they do so with an endearing, off-the-cuff stance that makes you almost not notice another important fact about them. The secret sauce of the Prettiots is not only that ukulele that Kasperhauser busts out, but that they can actually play. Trachtenburg has a long history as a musician dating back to childhood and the band Supercute!, of which Prat was also a member. If the songs feel, as Lucky put it, like “an epic sleepover”, they’re also executed with a kind of professionalism that bands whose promo flyers include pictures of butts and orthodontic retainers don’t always have. The Prettiots are especially well-traveled in the press for a band with not yet an album to their name, having made several swings through the blogosphere and actual print. This day show at Cake Shop was packed from start to finish — ABC News was even in the house filming the band for Taxi TV — and after the raunchy opener, a cover of Miguel’s “Pussy is Mine”, it wasn’t hard to tell why. These girls are indeed “adorable”, and their songs like “Stabler” and “Kinski” have a habit of sticking around long after the show is over.

I recorded this set as with the other recordings of the day, with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from the house engineer Clint. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Meat Puppets: October 31 and November 1, 2014 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Sets

Rooting for the Meat Puppets by now is a given; the band has seen it all, and somehow come out the other side better and not worse for wear. In the course of seeing the band during the life of this site, they have gotten better and tighter each time, from their phoenix-rising moment at the Knit in 2007 to a post-personnel change show at Bowery in 2009 to a stellar outing at Mercury Lounge in 2013. This year the band played back-to-back sets at one of Williamsburg’s two ascendant new venues, Rough Trade. The band shared co-headlining duties with Cass McCombs, with the acts swapping headliner slots between Halloween and the day after.

New team member Eric PH caught the longer Puppets set on Halloween night, and to be honest, he was the luckier of us, as the Puppets better-deserved that slot, showing command of their instruments and the audience on both nights. On an already-weird holiday, you need people like the off-kilter Arizonans to fully do you right, and the Pups obliged with a career-spanning set filled with fun covers of everyone from Willie Nelson and Ray Charles to the Everly Brothers. The band also delivered their most popular “hit” for an encore, the always-endearing “Backwater” from Too High To Die. As the “opening” band on the second night, I caught the Pups at an equal moment of inspiration, with a set that was slimmed down by about 20 minutes from the previous one. Still, they had plenty of time to play the three near-obligatory songs popularized by Nirvana on MTV Unplugged (that’d be “Plateau”, “Oh Me” and “Lake of Fire”) and a searing extended version of that Everly Brothers cover, “Cathy’s Clown”. “Plateau” was also a high point, led in by a cover of George Jones’ “Season of My Heart”. Chalk it up to being older and wiser (and maybe more sober), or simply rekindling their groove, but the Meat Puppets have never been better.

Eric PH recorded his set with Audio Technica microphones set up in our usual spot in the venue, combined with a soundboard feed from well-known local engineer Kyle. Mine was recorded with the Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and Kyle’s feed once again. Both recordings are outstanding, and available to stream and download below. Enjoy!

Negative Scanner: October 25, 2014 Trouble In Mind CMJ Showcase, Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

How in the hell does any band get itself across at CMJ? And doubly, how in the hell does a band get through to people as the leadoff act at a day show, on a Saturday? If you’re not fighting hangovers, it’s crowd chatter, and if it’s not those things, it’s garden-variety ennui. At that point, even people who love music are rapidly approaching Peak Music — your little band barely stands a chance.

Luckily nobody told Negative Scanner any of that. The Chicago band gave those of us who showed up early to the Trouble In Mind Records CMJ showcase the kick in the gut we needed to shake off the night before and remember why we were there — for that matter, why CMJ exists at all. A newly-signed band with more or less one 7-inch and some out of print cassettes to their name (plus a 2015 full length on the way), Negative Scanner define the kind of fresh talent that a music festival needs — that music needs — to be relevant. Their sound, raucous but tight post-punk a bit in the vein of early Sleater-Kinney, relies only Rebecca Valeriano-Flores’s aggressive, yelped vocals, but a crack band that clearly not only bothers to practice, but aspires to bigger things. This spirit got captured early on in the band’s first Craigslist ad, recounted by Impose Magazine: “Bands we like include Wire, The Fall, Siouxie and the Banshees, Video, Total Control. NO FLAKES, NO DRUNKS, PRO GEAR, PRO ATTITUDE.” Harsh, maybe, but the attitude paid off. Negative Scanner don’t just get your fists pumping with their energy; they sound good while doing it.

Most of this set is not available in recorded format, other than some live sets you can find floating around on Chicago venues’ bandcamp pages. So take this as a bit of a preview of the greatness to come, and be on the watch for this band in 2015. They’re the best act I hadn’t already heard of that I saw at CMJ.

It may have been dreary and pouring outside of Cake Shop at the start of the NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party, but Beach Day brought some Florida sunshine to brighten the day’s kickoff. The Hollywood, FL band treads some of the same ground as like-minded beach-named acts (that is surfy/garage-y rock) distinguished by the vocals of guitarist/vocalist Kimmy Drake, whose vocals are as sweet as any I heard all weekend. The once two-piece of Drake and Skyler Black, the band’s drummer, expanded to four by the time of this show, and the more robust sound did the band’s songs justice. Their music is deliciously retro, with songwriting of the AM radio/earworm variety. I haven’t been able to get “I’m Just Messin’ Around” and the heavier “Pretty” for more than a week. Both songs can be found on the band’s latest Kanine Records release, Native Echoes, and I recommend you grab one before the weather here in New York gets any worse.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other shows on this day, with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip and an excellent soundboard feed from Clint, the house engineer. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: October 23, 2014 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Purling Hiss, the scuzz-rock project of Philadelphia-based guitarist/songwriter Mike Polizze, has emerged from his early records’ soup of fuzz with the band’s best-recorded, best album of righteously weird rock n’ roll, appropriately titled Weirdon. We couldn’t have been happier as longtime fans to feature this band as the headliner of our annual unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, where the Hiss gave us thirty minutes of the most badass shredding we saw all weekend. Appropriately enough, we first caught the band opening for fellow Philadelphian Kurt Vile, another artist who has cultivated his early sound into something still-vital but more accessible to the masses.

A set like this shows you another thing, which is that while Weirdon is certainly Polizze’s most complete song cycle yet, it’s as much a triumph of production as evolved songwriting. When you hear a Hiss classic like “Run From the City” next to some of the best new numbers like “Forcefield of Solitude” and “Learning Slowly”, you realize just how much the aesthetics of a recording actually do matter, even in the earbud age. Despite a CMJ-typical truncated set time, Polizze and the band put everything into what they had, with Polizze on his knees bent over his guitar at several points in front of a crowd that, in the best Cake Shop tradition, was practically on top of him. Closing out with the very early PH song “Almost Washed My Hair”, Polizze drew a straight line from then to now. To hear the live version below is to realize that, if you weren’t, you should have been on this bandwagon from day one.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones mounted just in front of the band on the ceiling, plus Clint’s excellent soundboard feed of the house mix. The sound quality makes this likely our best Purling Hiss recording. Enjoy!

Matt Northrup: September 5, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival, Vintage 21, Raleigh, NC – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

Greensboro, NC-based guitarist Matt Northrup comes from the distinctly louder spectrum of folks in the solo guitar field. He has commented before on the fact that people don’t always expect “solo guitarist” to represent quite the wall of sound that his performances tend to create, but I suspect he’s OK with the added mystery. One of the highlights of Hopscotch Music Festival for me is always the chance to catch up on North Carolina talent that I haven’t been exposed to before, and seeing Northrup was high on my list. In the dim and quiet confines of Vintage 21, he more than rewarded all of our interest with a multi-part piece, “The Unwinding”, that hasn’t yet been committed to recorded form. What is clear is that Northrup is one to watch among the latest guitar talents. Don’t miss him.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK41 microphones which provided a little bit of ambiance. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
