Bill Nace & Samara Lubelski: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

September 26, 2019
By

On the heels of a barnburning set by David Nance Group, Bill Nace and Samara Lubelski conjured up a different sort of vibe at the Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning at Kings.

Lubelski and Nace both have extensive musical histories as solo artists, improvisers and collaborators, including with members of Sonic Youth (Lubelski with Thurston Moore in, among other formats, Chelsea Light Moving; Nace most recently in Body/Head with Kim Gordon, but also with Moore and Lubelski). This format — in which the duo have released a self-titled album and recently toured the U.S. — finds Lubelski on violin and Nace on guitar/effects. It’s clear from the cohesiveness of this 28-minute piece that the pair have a natural interplay with each other, as they weave together a piece that you’ll find thought provoking no matter how you choose to interpret it.

I recorded this set primarily with a feed from the soundboard, with the Schoeps MK5 onstage mics providing additional atmosphere. Enjoy!

Kimya Dawson: September 18, 2019 Market Hotel

September 25, 2019
By

Its hard for me to believe its been almost twelve years since we last saw Kimya Dawson live. Those two shows in 2008 at tiny Southpaw, and then later at a much larger Webster Hall straddled the time period when Kimya’s star rose dramatically due to her exposure in the Academy Award nominated film Juno, which included her performance at the Oscars.

We noted back then that fame hadn’t at all changed the authenticity of this unique performer and that remains correct today. She remains a person whose observational songwriting skills convey an understanding of the variety of emotions of the human condition — humor, love, anger, sadness, and most importantly a sense of community. This concert at Market Hotel covered much of her classic material and consequently many of those emotions.

This set was recorded by house FOH Joe onto a thumb drive through the soundboard’s internal recording device. Except for a low guitar level in the first song, the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Guerilla Toss: September 7, 2019 Bowery Ballroom

September 19, 2019
By

It was last Halloween when our long-time fave space rock pranksters blasted off into Market Hotel, sold out the joint, and presided over perhaps the party of the year. It would be hard to match that epic night in NYC, and for almost a year Guerilla Toss didn’t even try. That is to say, this Bowery Ballroom night is their first proper local headlining gig since last Hallows Eve.

This Saturday night gig may not have been the pure rager that Market experienced, but as GT shows go, this was a real keeper. The band has developed a full-set style of playing distinct “parts” or segments where three or four songs flow naturally from one to the other, and as the band continues to master its live presentation, these segues have become nearly seamless. The Bowery show has not only a tremendous flow, but also a killer setlist, highlights including the Betty>Polly couplet, a Dose Rate that lived up to its name, and a guitar-heavy jammy Meteorological. Things bode well for the November release of the band’s latest EP, What Would The Odd Do? and we can’t wait.

The current Guerilla Toss Northeast Tour comes to a close with two shows, Friday in Boston and Saturday in Holyoke, dates here.

I recorded this set from our old balcony perch and mixed with an excellent feed from FOH Danielle. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

One Eleven Heavy: September 1, 2019 Union Pool

One Eleven Heavy’s second LP, Desire Path, doubles down on the seventies boogie rock vibe that made Everything’s Better so irresistible. Building on the first record’s foundation, though, it ventures further into loose, Dead-inspired jams with songs like “Chickenshit” and “Hot Potato Soup.” It’s a pure delight for anyone who’s ever owned a Dead record or discovered the other side of country music with Numero’s Comic American Music compilation.

I was pretty jazzed to finally see One Eleven Heavy—their short tour last year was full of misfortunes including a van accident and a venue closure that preempted their Brooklyn gig. Unthwarted, they’ve been touring the U.S. this month, beginning with this record-release show at Union Pool and winding up back where they began with a tour-capper this Saturday, September 14th at Trans-Pecos. (Grab your tickets!) For a band so with members so geographically separated, they sound here like they play together every day. I highly recommend you get yourself out to Trans-Pecos this weekend for a surefire good time.

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool, with MBHO mics in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society: June 7, 2019 Union Pool

July 1, 2019
By

First off, a very important heads up: Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society are playing tonight, July 1, at Roulette with 75 Dollar Bill! This is going to be a special show, in celebration of the release 75DB’s latest record I Was Real, and a rare opportunity to catch Joshua Abrams and NIS in Brooklyn. Grab tickets here!

Mandatory Reality, the latest double-LP from Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society, sounds like a band erasing borders. The second track, “Finite,” approaches 40 minutes, testing the limits of physical media as well as the listener’s compass. On some other plane (I’m convinced) it must loop back on itself to continue on forever in its meditative rhythms, an endless groove. Confined to the physical world, the album nevertheless seems to have no beginnings or endings, but drops you in media res, as the poets do, filling in the geographical landmarks and relief as it goes. Titling a 40 minute song “Finite” is a promise to the wayward traveler.

Last month’s Union Pool gig was my first chance to see Abrams and company live. The experience is like being let on something intimate, a sacred ritual opened up to new members. For 50 minutes we were collectively transported into the world of Natural Information Society. Capturing the ecstatic sounds for later transmission couldn’t possibly contain the multitudes of their performance, but does offer a glimpse of Abrams’ vision. Again, I’m going to strongly urge you to go see (and hear) for yourself tonight at Roulette. Spread the word!

I recorded this from our usual spot at Union Pool, room mics mixed with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

SUSS: May 21, 2019 Union Pool

June 23, 2019
By

SUSS is a new musical collaboration from some old hands—Gary Leib, Pat Irwin, Jonathan Gregg and William Garrett, under the general direction of Bob Holmes. Between them there are too many credentials to list, all over the map and everywhere in between. Straddling the intersection of ambient and country/western music, SUSS sound like the future and the past, sci-fi folded over on spaghetti westerns. It’s music that would be appropriate for both a trip to Death Valley and aboard the International Space Station; however, your living room will do in a pinch.

SUSS have played a few shows lately supporting last year’s Ghost Box, released by the reliably adventurous New York label, Northern Spy Records. They’ve got a new 7″ as well, “Chisholm Trail” b/w “Aurora,” the latter previewed last month live at Union Pool, the vinyl due out this Friday. SUSS take it low and slow here, measuring out improvised passages blending into the album’s compositions. In person, the interior Brooklyn environs melted away as the band mapped desert territories under the stars. This recording will take you partway there, but I also recommend heading out to see them live your first opportunity. Do also head over to Bandcamp, where you can pick up the record and single.

I recorded this from our usual spot at Union Pool, an expert board mix from FOH Leslie Wolf combined with room mics. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: June 15, 2019 Rocks Off Concert Cruise

June 18, 2019
By

Many bands struggle to display excellent musicianship when they’re standing on solid ground. An even smaller percentage can pull it off when they’re literally rocking and rolling on the second floor of the stern of a tourist boat. Garcia Peoples hopped aboard the Lucille, temporarily purposed for a Rocks Off Concert Cruise, and showed why they continue to be one of the most compelling live bands in New York today — even when they can hardly stand up straight.

You might think it hard for a band to compete with the obligatory water view of the Statue of Liberty and some unexpected fireworks over the East River, but Garcia Peoples know their audience. Hearing a jammer of a “Total Yang” (from their current release, Natural Facts) transition into the new “Hourglass” as the Manhattan skyline coasts by was a special treat, as was the brand-new song “Hotwire,” played for the very first time live on this boat. Sure you could stand outside and count the number of high-rise foreign money laundering residential towers going up all over the city’s central isle, but you’d have been a fool to miss any of the action indoors, made all the more special by the stand-in of our bud Hans Chew for the band’s often-keyboardist Patrick Gubler aka P.G. Six.

There were times during this set where things seemed sure to come unglued, through no fault of the band’s own — boat wakes can make for some rough water. But that was ultimately the one-of-a-kind thrill of this set — the added physical challenge of playing in this environment (even the audience did a lot of swaying and grabbing solid objects) makes you even more impressed with what these guys can accomplish.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a limited soundboard feed. A boat isn’t the best place to jam from a standing-up-straight or sound quality perspective, but it’s still a good quality listen. Enjoy!

Thanks to Beyond Beyond Is Beyond and Garcia Peoples for making this happen!

David Nance Group: June 8, 2019 Union Pool

June 18, 2019
By

With no slight intended to Nebraskans, David Nance arrived seemingly out of nowhere last year with Peaced and Slightly Pulverized. But in reality he’s been highly prolific, furiously releasing original material alongside wonderfully-dazed full album covers of classics like Berlin, Goat’s Head Soup, and the gloriously-descriptive Doug Sahm and Band Do 90% of the Cocaine in the World in 1972 and Make a Record. Nance doesn’t seem overly precious about handling his or others’ music—preferring the energy of basement recordings to studio perfection—but clearly he has great reverence for it. His guitar playing and finely wrought lyrics are often disguised by an effortlessness that makes them all the more charming. That is, your typical David Nance song is baked, but not half-baked. For the recently released “Meanwhile” b/w “Credit Line” 7″ on Third Man Records, the two short cuts come off as ragged, bottled lightning, gone before you know it. But that’s Nance’s aesthetic, his nonchalance masking a gift for finding the sublime in the awful and mundane (see “Credit Line” or “In Her Kingdom”).

I missed Nance and band at Union Pool last year when they toured for the album and vowed not to do it again when they came around a couple weeks back. This set rests heavily on new material, with only “Poison” representing Peaced and Slightly Pulverized, plus “Meanwhile” and “Credit Line” from his recent single rounding out the released songs. Sometimes you just want to hear the songs you know, but I was mildly prepared for the new stuff from listening to this live compilation from his Bandcamp page. “Cure Vs. Disease” and “Give It Some Time” are earworms for sure, with Nance’s irresistible vocals providing the hard sell. The only question is when’s the next one coming and where do I send my money?

I recorded this from our usual setup at Union Pool, room mics combined with a board feed from FOH Robert. It retains all the grit you’d want from this band, and sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Chuck Johnson: May 21, 2019 Union Pool

June 11, 2019
By

Spending an evening with Chuck Johnson and his pedal steel guitar is a welcome respite from our over-scheduled, always-on age. The music drifts in open spaces, not hurried to any destination. Changes are subtle enough that you find yourself somewhere new without recalling how exactly you got there. It’s an overused metaphor surely, but in Chuck Johnson’s music the journey’s the thing.

Chuck’s recent set at Union Pool, opening for Suss, finds him mixing material from Balsams (one of them being “Calamus”) with some newer compositions—as with all his most recent work, boundaries are blurry. Midway through he introduces a loping percussive low end that orients the music without pushing too hard to get somewhere. The measured gait instead suggests an ever-present here—it’s a good place to spend some time.

For even more recent excursions from Chuck Johnson, check out his Bandcamp page for a few live recordings and even some music composed for PBS’s Food Town.

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool, room mics combined with a board feed from FOH Leslie Wolf. Thanks to her excellent mix and a quiet crowd, the sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Monks Of Doom: May 23, 2018 Berlin NYC

June 9, 2019
By

It had been ten years since we last encountered Monks Of Doom when this fortuitous event occurred. Those two shows in early 2009 at the now defunct Brooklyn venue Club Europa were the last time Monks appeared in the New York area. The Bay Area supergroup, containing mostly members of Camper Van Beethoven along with sometime CVB member and longtime guitarist for Counting Crows David Immerglück, tends to play intermittent west coast dates when the members’ other projects are not active.  In 2018, the quartet finished an album that has been in the works for that last decade and went on tour for the first time in who knows how long.  The Brönte Pin is the band’s first new material in twenty-five years, but sounds just as tight and focused as their best work. Immy shares lead vocal work with bassist Victor Krummenacher, with guitar wizard Greg Lisher and percussionist Chris Pedersen providing the backbone.  This set opening for the special Escovedo/Barone show (here) was a treat that we literally had no idea was going to occur, and we hope it isn’t another ten years before the band comes back to NYC.  In the spirit of long delays, I inadvertently sat on this recording for over a year, but I guess its better late than never.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Escovedo recording and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!
