Widowspeak: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The curse of being anointed a CMJ “buzz band” is that everyone wants to be seen at your shows, but no one is really listening to the music. We decided to offer Widowspeak a spot on our CMJ bill back in June, after both acidjack and I had seen them perform compelling sets at different shows. They seemed like a natural fit — unpretentious and intelligent indie-rock with roots in multiple genres from multiple decades. Widowspeak makes music for music lovers. I guess its not that surprising then that ten other promoters also booked them, and every “CMJ preview” mentioned them as a “band to see”. As with every band we booked, we’ll add to that Widowspeak is also a “band to hear”. On Thursday, when they performed at the NYCTaper show at 4 pm at Cake Shop they were also scheduled to play shows at 10:30am, 8pm and 11pm that day. So we lucked into getting the band fresh, lively, and in good moods. The set is concise but clearly indicates that the band has grown in confidence and cohesion since we last saw them. We’re streaming “Puritan”, as that track had some extra jump in its step — energy that the band would need later that night.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous sets from this show. We boosted the vocals from the board feed a bit more in this recording and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Savoir Adore: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have in the last several months had the distinct pleasure of experiencing Savoir Adore up close in two very different settings. In June, at their semi-acoustic Vivo in Vino concert, the band was adept at paring down their instruments to perform an excellent set in an intimate setting. At Thursday at our CMJ show at Cake Shop, we saw the full band and all the trappings — Paul Hammer in particular was remarkable at switching between electronics, guitar, vocals and keys, often more than one at a time. The set consisted of three new songs and four tracks from their debut album In The Wooded Forest. We are streaming “We Talk Like Machines”, which featured gorgeous vocals from Deidre Muro. Savoir Adore are poised at this point to take it the next level. The band’s obvious talent, energy and professionalism is a sure thing, and as they finish recording their second album, we expect big things from them in 2012.

I recorded this set in the same manner at the two previous recordings posted from this show and the sound quality is superb.

Tristen: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tristen released her debut album in February, and her national breakout has seen coverage from NPR, Rolling Stone magazine, Spin magazine, and a performance on Mountain Stage. Inexplicably, Tristen has not hit NYC. We attempted to reconcile that anomaly when we invited her to perform at our CMJ show at Cake Shop. I spent much of the pre-show conversation imploring people not to miss her, and was rewarded when Tristen delivered a superb thirty minute set. She began with a new song, and her set included five numbers from Charlatans At The Garden Gate. Her band (“The Ringers”) included a couple of new players from her last performance in NYC (February at Knitting Factory), but was tight and comfortable with the material. The penultimate number from the set, “Doomday”, featured a killer hook and some of Tristen’s best vocals, and we are streaming it below. After her set was over, I was approached by several people who thanked me for telling them not to miss her set. Perhaps NYC is finally ready for her talent. Tristen goes back on tour in January with a series of East Coast dates opening for Justin Townes Earle.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the White Fence set, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

White Fence: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 24, 2011

White Fence played one of the most impressive shows we’ve seen in all of 2011 — at Bowery in August. So, it was only natural that we would invite them to play our annual CMJ show at Cake Shop, and we were thrilled that they could join the bill. After a long drive from Connecticut where they had played the previous night (see here), the band arrived for their 3:15 pm set time a little weary but ready to go. Tim Presley noted the weirdness of the early set time before immediately launching into the opening two-fer “Mr. Adams” and “Who Feels Right”. Thereafter the gathering crowd was transfixed by some of the tightest and most faithful 1966-era psych-garage rock we have heard in ages. From the balcony at Bowery the band was remarkable, but from a few feet away at Cake Shop it was truly sublime to see Tim and Jarvis trade guitar licks throughout the nine-minute version of “Baxter Corner”. The only disappointment was the brevity of the set that was dictated by our tight schedule. Before departing, the band took requests and then launched into a fiery “Get That Heart” that we’re streaming below. White Fence is truly one of the most compelling bands we’ve seen in quite some time and we expect that the memory of their set at the NYCTaper CMJ show will be a musical highlight we won’t soon forgot.

I recorded all eight sets from our CMJ show in the same manner. The DPA 4021 microphones were attached to a threaded mount on the low ceiling five feet from the stage. We then mixed a soundboard feed, capturing the vocals missing from the “on-stage” rig. The results are indeed superb. Enjoy!

All sets from this show will be posted over the next week.

A large portion of this show was recorded on video by our friends at Bleary Eyed Brooklyn, and we expect to be embedding some of that video synchronized with our audio soon.

The entire show was photographed by several of NYC’s top concert photographers (including Amanda Hatfield’s work in this post), whose photos have graced these pages in the past. We expect to have more excellent photos in the coming days.

Real Estate: October 15, 2011 Bohemian Beer Garden – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

October 18, 2011
By

[blurry blackberry photo by nyctaper]

The new album from Real Estate is officially released today. Days is the first album for the band on their new label Domino — and this seems to be the perfect match between a label for music aficionados and a band who have melded a plethora of musical influences into a deceptively simple laid-back suburban indie sound. At the Bohemian Beer Hall in Astoria on Saturday, Real Estate began their CD release show by performing Days straight through, as they had done at 285 Kent in June. But midway through the set, at the conclusion of “Side A”, the band really threw us a curveball — a cover of Felt’s “Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow” (streaming below) that was as faithful to the original as much as it sounded like a Real Estate song. Matt Mondanile spent some time in Europe, and seems to have developed a taste for eighties Brit alterna-pop. After the show, we spoke to Matt and their Domino rep and learned the genesis of this cover. Felt’s Lawrence had programmed a show on Domino radio that Matt had heard and spurred his interest. The show continued with “Side B”, which concluded with a jammed-out seven minute version of the album’s closing track, “All The Same” (also streaming below). Real Estate finished the show with an extended take on “Beach Comber” that also stretched to seven minutes. The band flew overseas to begin a European tour before they return to the US in November. Real Estate will play Bowery Ballroom on November 23.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard about 30 feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The show presented some challenges, as the packed crowd muffled the PA speakers that are inexplicably placed at ground level at the venue. Ultimately, some EQ and a proper post-production mix of sources has resulted in an excellent recording. Enjoy!

The Rosebuds: October 12, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Rosebuds superb new album was released in June and chronicles the period after band leaders Kelly Crisp and Ivan Howard had divorced in 2009. Loud Planes Fly Low is an album of intelligence and maturity — the resolution of personal difficulties within a professional relationship, the “divorce” album has sadly become a staple of rock music. At Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night, the Rosebuds performed much of Loud Planes as a tight and cohesive unit. The touring band currently includes talented multi-instrumentalist Daniel Hart, whose skills in other settings we have previous experienced (here and here). Of the seven new songs performed, we were particularly impressed with the poignancy of the dirge-like “Second Bird of Paradise” and the energy of show-stopper “Woods”, both of which are streaming below. The Rosebuds current tour comes to a close with several southern dates this coming week.

I recorded this set with the warmer and vocal-friendly DPA microphones mounted at our standard balcony rail location and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Trans Am: October 8, 2011 Union Pool (playing “Futureworld”) – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

trans am
[Photo by acidjack. The photos are bad, but the recording is great.]

The band Trans Am reintroduced themselves in a big way with their seminal 1999 album, Futureworld nine years into their career. For the first time, the post-rock band introduced vocoder-enhanced vocals to their rock/krautrock hybrid. In many ways, this record, with its Atari graphics cover, augured the chiptunes genre, with its propulsive, fast-paced rock attack and robotic vocals. It also showcased a little bit of the band’s sense of humor, which you can get a dose of on their band page at Thrill Jockey. As is all the rage these days for classic bands, Trans Am did a two-night stand at one of my favorite venues, Union Pool, to close out their tour celebrating this classic record by playing it straight through.

With the smoke still clearing from The Psychic Paramount’s thunderous opening set, Trans Am kicked off the opening track “1999” to roars of approval from the crowd. By the time they hit the title track, “Futureworld,” the crowd was singing along to the vocoder-enhanced vocals, dancing, and sweating like hell – the show was completely sold out, and the room was packed. The band tore through the record with virtuosity and aggression; I can’t imagine this show being better in ’99 than it was today. The band even gave us an unexpected dose of (slightly) newer flavor when they ended the set with “I Want It All” and “Play in the Summer”, both from their 2000 record Red Line. Expect a followup to the band’s 2010 record, Thing, soon, and go see them live for an unforgettable experience.

I recorded this set from the balcony with the DPA microphones split wide, and an excellent soundboard feed. The quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Doug Paisley: September 24, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When an artist who I respect asks me to do something, I usually comply. On a night when I barely arrived in time to record their set at Mercury Lounge (here), Megafaun’s Phil Cook informed me that I should definitely record Doug Paisley’s set. I quickly finished setting up the rig and immediately hit record to capture Doug’s set — and I’m quite happy that I did. While singer-songwriters with sweet voices and narrrative lyrics are all too common, Doug Paisley is clearly a special case — his natural manner and authenticity immediately strikes the listener and draws them in. At Mercury last week, Doug had the tough task of opening the set, on a Saturday night, at a late show. But the crowd quickly responded and for the next 30 thirty minutes were strikingly attentive. Doug’s set consisted of numbers from this two albums on No Quarter Records, including 2010’s Constant Companion. We have chosen to stream “What About Us?”, from his self-titled debut, and a song that also appeared on Mojo Magazine’s “New Harvest” compilation.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Megafaun capture. The volume on stage and in the PA was quite low, so the boosting of levels in post introduced a slight hum into the recording. Otherwise the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Gourds: October 1, 2011 Sullivan Hall – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

October 7, 2011
By

[Photos courtesy of Cassandra Mullinix at Bucket Of Rock]

Having been playing together for the better part of two decades, The Gourds have drawn favorable comparisons to The Band and Los Lobos.  After my first exposure to them, they also remind me at times of The Radiators crossed with the looniness of their Austin, Texas brethren Butthole Surfers.  Anyway you want to call it, it’s evident that they bring great songcraft, spot-on vocalizing and tightly meshed musicianship to a brilliant combination of blues, country, bluegrass and shake-yer-ass rock ‘n’ roll.  And with two frontmen in the mix, it’s a really nice contrast to have Kevin Russel sounding a bit like a smoother version of John Hiatt and counterpoint Jimmy Smith bringing the grit.  A very dedicated crowd showed up this night at Sullivan Hall and the boys brought their chops and humor for a wonderful, non-stop 90+ minutes of music.  Playing nearly all the tracks off the excellent new album, ‘Old Mad Joy, they also dug out a handful of choice nuggets from their older discs.  Since a lot of people know this group best through their popular cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice”, I can’t help but say that they’re selling themselves and the band short.  With such an extensive catalog and marvelous live show, The Gourds have so much more to offer.

Thanks to Sullivan Hall’s great P.A. and the efforts of The Gourd’s excellent sound engineer, Mark, we were able to grab a superb capture with a soundboard feed and our microphones.  The only glitch is a 5-second dropout we had during “Haunted” that has been spliced to make for minimal distraction.  Other than that, the resultant recording is excellent.  Enjoy!

Special thanks to The Gourds, Nick Loss-Eaton, Lucy Sabini at Vanguard Records, and Steve at The Gourds News for the setlist.

Felice Brothers: September 29, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 4, 2011
By

[photo courtesy of JC McIlwaine and Bowery Houselist]

When we recorded The Felice Brothers at the Bell House in May, acidjack noted that the band’s new album Celebration, Florida represented a stylistic advance and a more varied mature approach to the americana genre that the band had perfected over their first seven albums. Four months later, The Felice Brothers tour on the album returned to NYC, this time at the more spacious Webster Hall. While the Celebration material dominated the set, this was truly a show for the fans as the group featured some rare numbers and a very appropriate cover. Springsteen’s “Darkness” was a celebratory version, and as the Boss’s fans are often exuberant towards their hero, The Felice Brothers fans at Webster Hall were equally voracious. The crowd-participation number “Whiskey in My Whiskey” is a good barometer of the audience’s involvement at any particular Felice show, and this crowd was up for the challenge. We are streaming the excellent version of “Whiskey” below. The Felice Brothers extensive tour continues throughout the US this Fall before they head over to Europe in December.

We recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted inside the soundboard booth front and center of the balcony. The microphones were mixed with a well-balanced soundboard feed. There are instances in the recording of digital interface interference, which I believe was from the violin’s DI and also some interference in the vocal microphone. These problems are intermittent and should not impede listening enjoyment of a superb performance.
