Krill: March 19, 2015 Longbranch Inn Austin TX – Impose SXSW

It was in mid-September that Boston’s Krill announced that they were going to disband and that their final shows would take place in October. On October 23, the band played their last show at Silent Barn. It was an odd time for the band’s departure as their latest album A Distant Fist Unclenching (Exploding in Sound Records) was just released in February and was a breakthrough of sorts. After they publicly struggled with the difficulties of life as a band on the road, Fist is an album where Krill seemed to reconcile life’s challenges and the band’s own insecurities with ultimately a fairly optimistic outlook. But the band did have a productive and entertaining five-year run and we offer this never-before-released recording we captured at the Impose Magazine show last March at SXSW as a tribute and farewell to Krill. This set consists of their 7″ tribute to fellow Bostonians Pile, and then runs through four Fist Unclenching songs in a set that pretty much encapsulates what Krill was all about — quirky songs, playful banter, and a good time. They will be missed.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted at the soundboard booth and mixed with a board feed. This is the same rig at the Pile set from this show and the sound is similar, but I believe that this Krill recording has better balance. Enjoy!

Pity Sex: October 17, 2015 Ad Hoc Car Wash + March 19, 2015 Long Branch Inn (SXSW – Austin, TX)

The Ann Arbor, MI-based band Pity Sex have done their homework. You’ll hear pieces of a number of 90s acts woven into their sound, which takes advantage of three band members (drummer Sean St. Charles and guitarists Brennan Greaves and Britty Drake) as vocalists and packs a suitably slacker attitude to go with wry-but-serious hooks. It’s pop-punk under a shoegaze haze, with lyrics that echo the band name — tales of breakups and half-assed hookups, self-loathing and dejection. Not to say that, when played to a teeming converted car wash full of what some tourist probably calls “Brooklyn hipsters” on a Saturday afternoon, Pity Sex’s sound isn’t a lot of fun. Joining at-times labelmates LVL UP and a number of like-minded others, Pity Sex delivered some of the best songs off of their current slate (2013’s Feast of Love and the Dark World EP that preceded it), plus their latest stuff, including the buzzed-about new single “What Might Soothe You?” On that note, for fans who’ve been clamoring for new material beyond just the single, there’s good news there, too: Pity Sex have a new record, White Hot Moon, coming out on Run For Cover records in 2016. Having caught this band at SXSW back in the spring, we were excited to see their progress since then at the car wash, and are sure more good things are in store for 2016.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings of the day, with AT 4051 microphones and a soundboard feed. The SXSW set was recorded with Sennheiser cardiods and a soundboard feed. In both cases, the sound is good, but keep in mind that it’s reflective of the “DIY” nature of the events.

Thee Oh Sees: March 20, 2015 Hotel Vegas – Panache SXSW – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Thee Oh Sees Hotel Vegas
[still from this video]

Thee Oh Sees released their new album Mutilator Defeated At Last a couple of weeks ago in mid-May. The reviews have been unanimously positive for this record, and we personally feel that this is perhaps the most fully realized album that the band has released to date. The most insightful review of the album is by our friend Adam Schatz (from Landlady) who, by simply describing in minute detail the album’s first song “Web”, says more about this excellent release on one page than we could in a week. The article is in the Talkhouse and it was published yesterday.

One aspect of the album not discussed by Adam but something that we’ve experienced personally has been the development of the songs in a live setting over the last few cycles of NYC performances. All the way back at the Summer of 2014 at McCarren Park, the band played three new songs that were unknown to us until I asked John Dwyer directly at Death By Audio the following night for the song titles. The three songs, “Web”, “Withered Hand” and “Lupine Ossuary” (originally called “Lupine Dominus II”) were featured at each of those Summer shows in their earliest form. By the time the band came to Bowery Ballroom in November (perhaps our best sounding TOS recording to date), four new songs were added to the rotation, so that the setlist was comprised of half new songs that would ultimately see release on Mutilator.

At South By Southwest, Thee Oh Sees played a ton of shows, but the one we caught was the longest and maybe the wildest set they played all week. The showcase at Hotel Vegas featured all bands under the superb umbrella of Panache Booking, and TOS closed the night well after midnight with an hour-long set in the pouring rain that featured a crazy amount of stage jumpers, people hanging from the trees, and ultimately the finale with the legendary diminutive rapper Bushwick Bill. The set was again heavy on new material (five Mutilator tracks) which were all fully developed and flowed naturally with the older songs. Of the new songs, we’re partial to the early-Floyd flavor of “Sticky Hulks” and we are streaming that selection below.

Thee Oh Sees are currently finishing up the final dates of a long European tour, and there are some announced US shows for the Summer, but we are waiting patiently for the announcement of new NYC dates.

I recorded this show in the same manner at the Wand set from this night. I mounted the Sennheiser Cards underneath the soundboard tent to avoid the rain and mixed with a board feed. There was a lot of chatter under the tent and the board is a bit drum heavy but the mix of the two (70% board) creates a better balance and the result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Alejandro Escovedo: March 21, 2015 Maria’s SXSW Party – Flac/MP3/Streaming

April 8, 2015
By

Alejandro at Marias

Last month we had the opportunity to see Alejandro Escovedo under two very different but equally compelling circumstances. His acoustic duet show at the Capitol Theatre was a treasure in large part because the live arrangements allowed the songwriting to shine. As we discussed in that review, Escovedo is a legend and one of the few artists who has universal admiration from his peers. For this SXSW show, he played with a full band in his hometown in front of many friends (and celebrities) and the atmosphere was a true party vibe. Escovedo has been hosting these Saturday SXSW shows at Maria’s Taco XPress on South Lamar for almost two decades but sadly this year’s event is going to be the last one ever.

After curating a day’s worth of artists, Alejandro and his band closed the night. The set began straight enough with four Escovedo classics before he slowed it down and discussed the history of this show in a moving spoken word intro for “San Antonio Rain”. As the show progressed, the packed crowd became more engaged and this was quite evident during “Sally Was a Cop” when the fans carried the song to its completion with a sing-along chorus that can be heard clearly on the recording. We’re streaming that track below. The balance of the set was anchored by two classic rock covers, a scorching version of Neil Young’s “Like a Hurricane” that featured some outstanding guitar work and the night’s last song, an extended and loose version of the Stones’ “Beast of Burden” that once again featured much crowd participation and completed this extraordinary set with smiles all around.

Alejandro Escovedo will be touring and playing quite a few shows in April and May, dates here. He returns to NYC for a special show at the Rubin Museum of Art on West 17th Street on May 29.

I recorded this set with the Sennheisers mounted from the low ceiling next to the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. There was a lot of crowd chatter that necessitated reducing the levels of the audience source at certain points, but over the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Wand: Mercury Lounge 2015 + SXSW 2015 + Webster Hall 2014 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Add Wand to the list of bands best realized as a live act. Not to disrespect their two most recent albums, this year’s Golem and last year’s Ganglion Reef, both fine efforts in the lazily-named “garage-psych” canon that add the band’s wizards-and-warlocks imagery to the mix of guitar pyrotechnics and punk urgency that characterize, to some degree, the efforts of regular tourmate Ty Segall and others. Heard in the vacuum of headphones or home speakers, alone, it’s too easy to lump them in with the other bands whose names you know and move on.

But live, there are clearer nods to the band’s actual influences: Rainbow, T. Rex, Bowie, early period Zeppelin — some of the bands that influenced the much-derided L.A. “glam” scene of the 1980s. Wand owe a very much larger debt to these bands than their contemporaries, and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, the glammy sensibility Wand brings to the table serves as a reminder that the wholesale death of the L.A. scene at the hands of grunge was a bit of a throwing out of the baby with the bathwater. If those seventies touchstones can be blamed for giving us Poison and Warrant, it’s worth remembering that the better attitudes they embodied were being unafraid to have style or show off how well you can play, and to make each performance a true performance. Wand may not wear makeup or tight clothing, but their show brings with it some of that theatrical feel that makes them stand out. That’s what made them darlings at South By Southwest, where one of us captured their burner of a set at the Panache Booking-sponsored Hotel Vegas show and deemed it the best thing he saw all festival.

We’ll let you judge for yourself, with a three-fer of Wand shows in a range of situations. There’s that SXSW show and a September 2014 show opening for Ty Segall at Webster Hall, together with the most recent appearance by the band in NYC, an hourlong headlining gig at Mercury Lounge. I caught the Mercury show, and was taken straight away by the band’s command of the stage. Songs from their two albums enjoyed a range of reinterpretations and rocked-out treatments, while frontman Cory Thomas Hanson gave us the kind of vocal performance we’re just not used to hearing anymore. I appreciated that amidst the pounding — and the band also comes across much heavier and less spacey live than on record — the band slowed things down from time to time, such as when they lead us into the cosmic swirl of “Melted Rope.” Each of these three shows ends on the same number, the band’s most reliable “jam” song “Generator Larping”, which is as sure a recipe for a great end to the night as anything I’ve heard this year.

These sets are all combinations of soundboard feeds with high-quality audience microphones, and each of them is of excellent quality. Enjoy!

Pile: March 19, 2015 Longbranch Inn – Impose SXSW – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Pile Live
[screenshot from video by Niko Matses]

Thursday was my first day of SXSW this year and it was a very long day. I awoke at the crack of dawn in NYC and flew to Austin arriving around 1pm local time. The afternoon was filled with errands, a few beers, some local cuisine and then it was time to get to the Impose Magazine “Imposition” show at the Longbranch Inn on East 11th. The roster for this night was filled with fake names — bands that due to silly contractual games couldn’t be named until after playing the “official” shows on the west side of town. It was not long after we arrived that the actual bill for the night was announced and it was as we expected from these Impose shows, a fine list of current up and comers. The anchor for the night was Boston’s Pile, a band that’s not exactly new but who are finally getting the attention they deserve. By the time the band took the stage it was after 1:30 am and I was pushing 24 straight hours awake — but these guys gave me a much needed jolt of energy.

Pile began in 2009 began as Rick Maguire’s solo project before he recruited a band to tour. The band’s shows have become legendary in the Boston DIY scene, as Pile has become what’s been described as “your favorite band’s favorite band”. The band’s new album You’re Better Than This (Exploding In Sound Records) was released earlier this month. The album has its ferocious and gentle sides, a loud-soft-loud dynamic that exhibits influences that include post-punk, noise rock, and even anti-folk. I hear everything from the Minutemen through Built To Spill and of course their hometown predecessors Mission of Burma. For this short SXSW set, this live version of Pile was less about the “soft” and more about the straight ahead punk which was fine with us. The set began with three straight songs from You’re Better, and we’re streaming “The World is Your Motel” which absolutely raged. Pile is now on an extensive tour (dates here), which comes to NYC for an April 28 show at Baby’s All Right. This is a much recommended show from our viewpoint.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

We first caught up with J Fernandez at our CMJ show back in 2013, and were pumped to run into them again on the tail end of their SXSW journey at this private show an hour away from the madness. Here, the band performed a stripped-down set that included new material as well as offerings from their excellent two-EP collection of No Luck and Olympic Village. Though run ragged from a very busy schedule over the week, J Fernandez played this private show with real panache, with these songs coming to life as live numbers in a way that distinguished them from their lo-fi EP counterparts. The band, like most of their counterparts, has been on the festival circuit heavily this summer, most recently hitting Canada with comrades Alvvays, and returning to that country next month for POP Montreal. We can’t wait to see what this guys will do next.

As you can see in the photo, I recorded this set simply, with Schoeps MK4V microphones right in front of the band. The vocals are a touch low in places owing to the DIY setup, but overall the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Cross Record: March 14, 2014 Ba Da Bing / Northern Spy SXSW Showcase, Palm Door (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

August 13, 2014

Before we caught up with Austin’s Cross Record at the private ranch show on the last day of SXSW (that recording here), the band played a full set to the Ba Da Bing / Northern Spy Records showcase back at the festival that showed a less intimate but somewhat bigger-sounding side of the band. Although it was easier to digest the band’s slowcore approach among the rapt die-hards at the ranch, this set found them sitting nicely alongside acts with a somewhat less reserved approach. Lead singer/songwriter Emily Cross gave a poised, poignant vocal performance, while the band, consisting of husband Dan Duszynski and Peter Frederiksen on guitar, made just the right amount of noise to make for a well-balanced and engaging set. While our recording was previously streamed in full over at Impose Magazine after the festival, we are pleased to offer it for download here for those who want it.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Palm Door staff coupled with Schoeps MK4V microphones. While some crowd noise is a distraction at points, the sound quality is otherwise quite good. Enjoy!

Deleted Scenes: March 13, 2014 DC Against the World SXSW Party, New Movement Theater (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

May 19, 2014

We hadn’t seen Deleted Scenes since a showcase in Brooklyn at the start of this decade, so the excellent unofficial DC Against The World SXSW day show put on at the New Movement Theater improv club proved a great way to catch up. The dark interior of the New Movement provided the perfect mood space to take in the new songs from the band’s latest effort, Lithium Burn, released this April, which has proven a worthy follow-up to the band’s well-received two previous full-lengths. In keeping with their DC-based roots, Deleted Scenes’ off-kilter art rock defies categorization in the same way their predecessors Dismemberment Plan, Q and Not U and others did, blending elements of that scene’s post-Fugazi punk with a kind of big-but-broken hearted confessional lyrical style. Despite the dark environs and material (culled exclusively from Lithium Burn), this was a band obviously thrilled to be here, ready to get back on the horse and share their new work with the wider world. They’ll be doing just that this Wednesday at Baby’s All Right in NYC, so if you’re in NYC, check it out!

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from this show, with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is limited by the humble PA setup and the sound of the room, but it is overall a good listen. Enjoy!

Brooklyn’s NYMPH took things to another level of the eclectic at the standout Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing SXSW Showcase this past March. Like many of the other acts on this night’s bill, the seven-piece is exuberantly unconventional, drawing inspiration from psychedelic rock, free jazz, kraut, and damaged blues. This three-song, thirty-two minute set included the title track from the band’s first Northern Spy release, New Millennium Prayer, which should be on any fan of experimental/out music’s list of 2014 releases to own. With each composition stretching past the seven-minute mark, every song became a chance for the band to explore, and those of us in the audience to rage on the floor in return. As the band’s Facebook page promises, “Witnessing NYMPH at peak power is akin to witnessing ritual.” Having seen what I saw this night, I’d say I agree.

I recorded this set in the same manner as my other recordings this night, with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the optimum position hanging over the crowd and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
