Real Estate: February 21, 2024 Tubby’s

February 27, 2024
By

It’s been a minute since Real Estate has graced the site but our relationship with the band goes back to their early days playing clubs in Brooklyn. In fact, their label, Domino, released a set recorded by Nyctaper as a bonus LP to their 2011 album, “Days.” All these years later the band is still writing excellent material, still playing great shows and still finding cool ways to engage their audience.

This show was semi-secret. The band and Tubby’s arranged to not fully announce it until a few days’ prior. They also arranged to break Tubby’s tradition and do no pre-sale tickets and no happy hour prior. It was doors at 7, first come first serve. This was the first time I’ve ever had to wait online to get into Tubby’s. The time spent standing on Broadway offered a fun opportunity for curious locals to ask what was going on, chat with some new friends we met in line and, randomly, say hi to an old friend who happened to be walking by on a date. Don’t ever say music doesn’t bring people together.

Unsurprisingly, this sold out quickly and it seemed that everyone was fully invested in seeing the band. Once they started almost no one was at the bar and the live room was so packed I couldn’t leave my spot or I would never have made it back to my gear. We suffer for your listening pleasure.

The band opened with “Something New” from their just released album “Daniel” and the crowd welcomed it in like an old favorite. That continued to play out over the next hour as the band worked through about half new material and half old favorites. Seeing bands in a room this intimate is special and everyone, band and audience, seemed to recognize it.

Real Estate is about to embark on a massive tour that I’m sure will bring them near you so buy a ticket and have some fun. I sure did. Special thanks to bassist Alex Bleeker for giving me the ok to record and then going ahead and getting a page set up on the Live Music Archive for the band. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, we can get some of the older shows uploaded and get the artist page well populated.

I recorded this from my regular spot next to the soundboard with my MBHO’s and an excellent board feed curtesy of Tubby’s FOH engineer Will. Enjoy!

Last week, Real Estate checked off what must be described as a common bucket list item for New Jersey rockers of a certain age — the chance to open up a Yo La Tengo Hanukkah show. But this slot wasn’t just given to the band. They have clearly earned such honors, as Real Estate has emerged as one of the best bands in indie circles these days. Days was one of the best albums of 2011, and at Hanukkah Night 4 Real Estate revealed that they have the blueprints for a worthy followup. The band opened the show with three new songs, all instantly catchy in a Real Estate way. The third new song also featured something that seemed natural for the band, but it may be the first time we’ve seen the band engage in an extended jam. And it was dead-on. We’re streaming the untitled new song below, and we hope it will continue to be one of the band’s jam vehicles. Real Estate will be going to tour in Australia in the new year.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the Yo La Tengo recordings, the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound is superb. Enjoy!

Another of the bands we make no secret of our love for is Real Estate.  Over the past three years that we have been following the band, we have watched the mature and develop sonically, culminating with their release of the new album Days on Domino Recording Company – their first for the tastemaking label. Days continues a run of good news for the band, who have continued to tour hard and earn accolades from critics and fans alike.  This show at Bowery Ballroom was the culmination of a two-month tour of Europe and the U.S., and it couldn’t have made for a better sendoff into the Thanksgiving holiday the following day.  The respectful, excited crowd cheered through the longest set of Real Estate’s that we have seen to date at 70 minutes, which covered almost every song on Days and their self-titled debut, plus their cover of Felt’s “Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow”, a favorite on this tour.  In a market crowded with bands following others’ lead, Real Estate have distinguished themselves with a laid-back, unique sound that always surprises.  They have almost singlehandedly come to define their hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey where three of the band members grew up together, and which has served up great music from the band’s fellow travelers and other unique talents like Julian Lynch and tour openers Big Troubles.  We closed out this show thankful not only for this great show, but for the band’s continuing support and future prospects.

I recorded this set with a combination of a soundboard feed by Kenny, the house engineer at Bowery Ballroom, and Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones.  The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Special thanks to Domino Recording Company and Real Estate for their hospitality and for their continued support of NYCTaper.

[blurry blackberry photo by nyctaper]

The new album from Real Estate is officially released today. Days is the first album for the band on their new label Domino — and this seems to be the perfect match between a label for music aficionados and a band who have melded a plethora of musical influences into a deceptively simple laid-back suburban indie sound. At the Bohemian Beer Hall in Astoria on Saturday, Real Estate began their CD release show by performing Days straight through, as they had done at 285 Kent in June. But midway through the set, at the conclusion of “Side A”, the band really threw us a curveball — a cover of Felt’s “Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow” (streaming below) that was as faithful to the original as much as it sounded like a Real Estate song. Matt Mondanile spent some time in Europe, and seems to have developed a taste for eighties Brit alterna-pop. After the show, we spoke to Matt and their Domino rep and learned the genesis of this cover. Felt’s Lawrence had programmed a show on Domino radio that Matt had heard and spurred his interest. The show continued with “Side B”, which concluded with a jammed-out seven minute version of the album’s closing track, “All The Same” (also streaming below). Real Estate finished the show with an extended take on “Beach Comber” that also stretched to seven minutes. The band flew overseas to begin a European tour before they return to the US in November. Real Estate will play Bowery Ballroom on November 23.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard about 30 feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The show presented some challenges, as the packed crowd muffled the PA speakers that are inexplicably placed at ground level at the venue. Ultimately, some EQ and a proper post-production mix of sources has resulted in an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Real Estate: New Album “Days” on October 18 – First 300 Preorders Get NYCTaper Recorded Vinyl “Bootleg”

September 8, 2011
By

Domino Records announced today that the new Real Estate album Days will be released on October 18, 2011. We are extremely pleased to also announce that Domino is offering a NYCTaper-recorded bonus “bootleg” vinyl LP to the first 300 pre-orders. I recorded Real Estate at 285 Kent on June 30, and the band and label liked it so much that its now a bonus to the official release. That night the band performed Days start to finish for the first and only time.

The recording was captured with DPA 4021 Cardioid microphones mounted 10 feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed.

Our friends Real Estate have spent the past few years doing it “the right way” – garnering critical attention for the debut LP and building off of that with varied, exciting and packed live shows. Their hard work has paid off in the form of an exciting new deal that finds them leaving one of our absolute favorite boutique labels – Woodsist – for one of the best-curated international indie labels, Domino Records. Per Domino’s press release, a new record is expected in October of 2011. Giving a treat to a Friday night crowd that the band said was one of their best NYC crowds in years, the band played a bunch of new material, including a number of songs we had not heard before. The new songs do not deviate wildly from the old material – call them evolutionary rather than revolutionary – but demonstrate their continuing overall improvement as a band and as songwriters. Ridgewood’s finest will no doubt play some local shows before that new record comes out, and we expect to enjoy hearing more of the new material between now and then.

hi and lo recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones in our usual location in the venue. As with the Julian Lynch recording, these accurate microphones picked up a lot of natural reverberance of the wide room. However, the house mix was stronger, and the crowd a bit less chatty, so with additional mastering efforts, this recording is the much better of the two. Enjoy!

In the next few weeks, Real Estate will release a single that will again point their career arc upwards. “Reservoir” b/w “Out of Tune” will be released on True Panther Records and based upon the live performances of both songs we have heard, this single will be huge. In June at Music Hall, “Reservoir” was the untitled “new song” that we streamed and raved about. Now with a title, “Reservoir” is an irresistible upbeat number with a melodic guitar line and a relaxed vocals. “Out of Tune” has been the opening song for the last two Real Estate recordings we captured, and its slower with more of a 70’s vibe than its flipside. At Pier 54 on Thursday, both songs were on display, along with a completely new debut performance of a song preliminarily called “All The Same” during a nice forty-five minute opening set. The band continues to get tighter live and with this high quality new material on the horizon, Real Estate is going places. Those places include a tour with Deerhunter in October with a local date of Webster Hall on October 15.

I recorded this set under the same conditions as the Deerhunter recording, but the sound in the venue was clearer and more well-balanced during this set. Enjoy!

The best sign for the continued viability of a band that has moved beyond its initial “buzz” is their ability to write quality material and mature in their live act. Real Estate has accomplished both and proved it as the headliner of the Woodist showcase at the Northside Festival. The band continues to play tighter and more focused sets. On Friday, Real Estate opened with a new-ish song “All Out of Tune”, and played two other new numbers, including perhaps the strongest song of the set — an untitled number (“Nothing to Lose”? — sampled as Track 09 below) that premiered at Monster Island in April and for which we mixed the audio of this video of that performance. The song’s guitar line recalls “Fake Blues” but with a stronger melody and representative Real Estate style lyrics — perhaps a perfect new single for the band.

Real Estate perform again in NYC on July 9 at Le Poisson Rouge, at the outset of their extensive tour with Kurt Vile. They return again to NYC in mid-August to open for Deerhunter at Pier 54.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the left front corner of the soundboard. The house mix was quite excellent and the sound quality of this recording is outstanding. Enjoy!

My first experience with Real Estate live was as an opening band for Love Is All at Music Hall a mere nine months ago. Last night at the same venue, there was one obvious fact — they have gotten a lot better. In October at Market Hotel, we remarked about their improvement, but last night was another world entirely. The band has coalesced into a tight unit, performing their songs with the same energy but with a clear focus and, dare I say it, professionalism. The guitars were all in tune, the solos were well placed and purposeful and the rhythm section was precise. Coupled with the well-mixed excellent sound system of Music Hall, the bottom line is that last night Real Estate sounded just plain terrific. While they were the third of four bands on the bill for this sold out show, it was also clear that many in the crowd were there to see Real Estate. The band worked through a setlist consisting primarily of their debut album material, but of note was the new opening song performed only for the second time, and the dead-on cover of Ariel Pink’s “My Molly“.

Last night was the first night of the combined Real Estate and Woods tour. The tour travels through the midwest before SXSW and then continues down south to the end of March. In May, Real Estate tours Europe. Find all the tour dates at their MySpace page.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig at the usual location directly in front of the soundboard. The sound in this venue continues to excel and this entire show was mixed particularly well. As a result the sound quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Woods was also recorded and will be posted tomorrow.

Real Estate: Covered Ariel Pink at Music Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

At Music Hall last night near the end of their excellent set, Real Estate broke into an excellent cover of a fairly obscure Ariel Pink track “My Molly”. This song was originally recorded by Ariel when he was 19 and eventually was released on an EP in 2006. I did record the entire Real Estate set and plan to post it later today.
