Felice Brothers: February 7, 2015 Brull Foundation Benefit – Flac/MP3/Streaming

After the tour-de-force performance by Strand Of Oaks to open the Tommy Brull Foundation Benefit, any band might be hesitant to follow such a set. But Felice Brothers were the perfect style of band to do it. The intensity and poignancy of the Strand Of Oaks set was a great way to start the show, but for the Felice’s set it was truly party time. As the Foundation’s stage announcements made clear, the Brulls not only enjoy raising money for good causes but they also like to have a good time. And for the Felice Brothers raucous set it was easy to have some fun. The band played a lengthy set of material from throughout their career including five songs from 2014’s Favorite Waitress, and a crazy Neil Young cover to close the night. We were particularly impressed with the version of “Cus” (streaming below) and the ultra-rare “Ruby Mae” that featured some added lyrics that sounded like an old traditional folk song. The Felice Brothers are currently on a 3-week tour in Australia, and we’d encourage our friends down under to catch their highly entertaining set.

I recorded this set in the exact same manner as the Strand Of Oaks set and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

We’ve previously discussed the fact that Tim Showalter is simply a good guy — he has a compelling story of redemption, heartfelt lyrics, and close friends with whom he collaborates. Tim is a musician’s musician and when we were setting up early for the Tommy Brull Foundation Benefit last weekend we discovered another aspect of his life that impressed us. A big reason why Strand Of Oaks became involved with the Brull Foundation and their charitable work with the special needs Camp Anchor was because when he was younger Tim Showalter worked at a similar camp. Additionally, the Brull Foundation was created in the memory of Tommy, who passed away in a car accident. Tim suffered severe injuries in a near fatal accident a mere 15 months ago. Perhaps buoyed by the inspirational work behind the Benefit show and the memory of Tommy, at this show Strand Of Oaks put forth a performance of remarkable power and beauty. The band worked through nearly all of their breakthrough album HEAL before finishing with a neat Replacements cover, but throughout the set Tim and the band took time to recognize the purpose of the show and the memory of Tommy. For the very sold-out crowd, that recognition was much appreciated because many of the people in attendance either knew Tom or have a connection to Camp Anchor, or both. It takes a conscientious performer to appreciate the importance of occasion and step outside of their stage persona to acknowledge important issues. On this night, Tim Showalter was the right guy for that task.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps on-stage mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

When I pitched this bill to ToddP for Trans Pecos, his immediate reaction was “great bill”. And that’s because it is. Jeffrey Lewis is one of the most talented and entertaining performers to evolve from the “anti-folk” movement of the last decade and Diane Cluck writes compelling and beautiful intimate songs that capture the listener. The friends have toured together this month on the East Coast and this is the final show of that tour. The excellent new performer Kid In The Attic was chosen especially by Diane as support for this show.

We’re pleased that tickets have moved briskly for this show, but there are still tickets remaining.

If the horrific Metro North crash on February 3, 2015 that took the life of my friend Eric Vandercar and five others taught me anything it was only to reinforce the notion that life is inherently unfair and at times utterly senseless. Eric was a superior individual — a man with a profoundly successful career, a wonderful family and a large variety of engaging and eclectic interests. The news reports have described him as a “banker”, which is kind of like describing Lincoln as a politician. Eric was at the forefront in the creation of varieties of municipal bonds, essentially for nearly thirty years creating the finance mechanisms that allow cities to raise funds for development. In his free time Eric was also one of the most prolific and knowledgeable tapers of the last twenty years. He was also a skier, a diver, and a world traveler. Ultimately, there was very little that Eric Vandercar did not do in his too-short 53 years of life. But here we are two weeks removed from the accident, and its time that I choose to rise above the anger and the sadness and begin the healing process by remembering Eric for the good he brought to this world in the best way I know how — the recorded music.

In a way, Eric and I lived parallel lives. When we were both newly married and living a short distance apart in NYC we spent a lot of time together going to shows locally and on the road from about 1996 to 1999. When each of us had children and when the Vandercars moved upstate, we saw each other infrequently. But with Eric, it was easy to pick up where we’d left off before. The last time I saw him we chatted for a while in the taper’s section at a Phish show on Randall’s Island, and talked about those old days when we’d sit for hours in his Elizabeth Street apartment and listen and swap the latest DAT recordings.

One of the more memorable trips I made with Eric was the moe. Halloween show in Utica NY in 1998. On previous roadtrips we’d gone with groups of tapers but for this weekend jaunt it was just the two married couples driving north in Eric’s SUV. I’d never been to Utica (before or since) but my memory was a small city similar to countless others in Upstate New York. We’d booked a hotel a short walk from the venue — a classic old theatre that had been renovated and renamed the Stanley Performing Arts Center. moe. were dressed in holiday costumes and kicked of the show with a straight forward “Reaper” cover before working through familiar material from this era in the band’s history. The show is notable for the appearance of a then-obscure local guitarist Joe Bonamassa, who has subsequently gone on to have a terrific career including a Grammy nomination in 2013. Other highlights include a very lengthy segment in the second set of Timmy > Brent > Moth with varied teases and short jam interludes in the suite.

This show was recorded by Eric with his trademark B&K 4021 microphones from a position at the front and center of the balcony. I had a seat on the floor, so before the show I gave Eric my Sony portable DAT deck and a couple of tapes and he did the rest patching my deck into his deck. So while I technically have “master” tapes, these are really “ericv” masters. His master of this show has not previously circulated before now.

On playback, the second set was extracted flawlessly but the first set had a few bits of digital static. It took me three plays to get this transfer of the first set. Not bad for a pair of seventeen year old DATs that I don’t remember ever actually playing.

I will be extracting more of Eric’s DATs in the immediate future and posting them here. In a very large way, NYCTaper would not have existed without the influence of Eric Vandercar on my own personal approach to taping and trading. I’ll be talking about that influence in future posts.

White Fence: October 26, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Back in October, White Fence was on an extensive tour that criss-crossed through NYC a few times, including during CMJ week when they played a bunch of shows. We were lucky to catch the band twice in less than two weeks at Baby’s All Right. The mid-October recording was featured on the site contemporaneously with the show but the second night at the Panache Hangover Brunch has waited until now. This White Fence set started at about 7 p.m. but certainly felt later as we’d been in the venue since the early afternoon. We’ve already posted two sets from this day (Juan Waters and King Gizzard) and the White Fence set was really gravy for one of the best complete days of music we had all year. White Fence did not replicate the set from earlier in the month as they mixed up the setlist and swapped in several different numbers. But as we had previously experienced, the current White Fence quartet (with Cate Le Bon on guitar) is a unit that has been together for a while now and the performance was tight and energetic. We are streaming “Sandra” below — a near perfect performance that had the band smiling at the end.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed near the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Mike Pace and the Child Actors: January 16, 2015 Union Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Six years between albums is a long time. When we recorded Mike Pace’s old band Oxford Collapse at CMJ 2008, little did we know that the group would disband shortly thereafter and Mike would retreat from the music world for more than half a decade. Oxford Collapse had a fairly successful six-year run, with two albums on Kanine Records and two on Sub Pop but called it quits in early 2009. But in collaboration with the multi-talented Matt LeMay, Mike Pace and the Child Actors released Best Boy in January — an album six years in the making. The album’s collection of eleven songs contains some tracks that sound familiar to fans of Oxford Collapse’s 90s-inspired guitar rock, but also has songs that develop Mike’s other influences. At the album’s release show at Union Hall, the band played much of the new album and a few classic rock covers. Mike rotated from guitar to keyboards to laptop which accentuated the mix of styles evident on the album. After years away from regular performance, Mike has nevertheless maintained his keen wit and ability to summon the spirit for some true moments of unbridled energy. The result was a highly entertaining show to a packed room with many smiles and lots of head bobbing. Unfortunately, Mike Pace will not be returning to full-time live performance in the very near future (he and his wife are having a baby soon) but we’re confident that when he returns to the circuit, the quality of the music will remain.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards clamped to the low ceiling about 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed provided by house FOH Alex. The mix of the two sources produced an outstanding recording. Enjoy!

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – January 24, 2015 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It was almost exactly two years ago when Joe Russo’s Almost Dead made their debut at the Brooklyn Bowl. In our somewhat controversial review of that show, we found the band’s approach to the music of the Grateful Dead both musically proficient and extremely refreshing. JRAD is a core group of friends and accomplished musicians whose take on the GD catalog was that night in stark contrast from the world of “post-Dead” which had become to me uninspired to the point of becoming almost a gimmick. I’m happy to say that the last two years have proved us entirely correct. As “post-Dead” prepares to say “Fare Thee Well” this summer, JRAD has been an unqualified success. The band has toured several times throughout this period, and last month teamed with Phil Lesh to play a series of New Year’s shows at the Capital Theatre in Port Chester NY. This weekend JRAD returned to where it all began for two very sold-out shows at the Brooklyn Bowl for the “Freaks Ball”. We attended and recorded both but offer up the second night first because this was truly a remarkable performance, surpassing anything that I could have reasonably expected from this group.

The night began with what appeared at first to be a faithful take on Pigpen’s “Alligator” — that was until the jam segment when it became very apparent that JRAD would recognize no boundaries on this night. Led by the thundering bass of Dave Dreiwitz, JRAD weaved in and out of a “Caution Jam” that touched on themes as varied as “Rider” and “Slipknot”. The set’s opener would last nearly seventeen minutes before evolving into “Jack A Roe”. This traditional number was for the Grateful Dead almost always a short first-set Garcia-led song that followed a very specific pattern. For JRAD, there are no patterns as Jack A Roe became a ten-minute exploratory jam vehicle that led very nicely into a celebratory “Uncle John’s Band”. The balance of the first set continued with some interesting song selections that kept the energy high with much more to come. Saturday night’s second set was the highlight of weekend with a “Music Never Stopped” opener that went into some deep space mid-song before returning to finish in resounding fashion. What followed was truly the most inspired song we’ve seen JRAD perform — an eighteen-minute take on “Cumberland Blues” that stretched the song to previously unheard limits and really encapsulates what makes this group special. We’re streaming this song below. The balance of the second set was filled with multiple highlights and featured a wide variety of surprises and interesting and intelligent interpretations of the familiar catalog.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards riding very high on a stand about 30 feet directly in line with the right stack. Other than the persistent din of crowd yapping, this is a quite excellent recording. Enjoy!

Wussy: January 17, 2015 Studio at Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

“We suddenly have a crowd”, Wussy co-frontperson Chuck Cleaver noted wryly in the middle of a very sold-out crowd at the Studio at Webster Hall on Saturday. Suddenly of course being the relative word. Wussy has existed as a band for more than a decade but 2014 was by far their best year as a band. The breakthrough album Attica was released in the Spring and the groundswell of support was palpable. By year’s end the album was appearing all over the place in the best-of-year lists, Pazz & Jop (Village Voice), The Guardian, KEXP, Underground Bee, Sound Opinions, Bradley’s Almanac, Chunklet, KDHX, and many others — including this very site’s 10 Best Concerts and 25 Best Moments. So the “crowd” wasn’t so much as sudden as it was well earned. Perhaps its the sold-out crowds or the at-long-last universal praise or just the positive energy that currently surrounds the band but Saturday night’s show is the best we’ve ever seen Wussy play — and we’ve been there a bunch of times going back several years. The band opened with a quiet Lisa Walker-led traditional number that will appear on the band’s Record Store Day release later this year and then worked through half of Attica, selected older tracks, one new song and one clever cover. The entire band seemed to be “on” for this show and the highlights were many. We’ve chosen to stream Lisa’s ode to Indiana, “Pizza King” from 2011’s Strawberry and the aptly named “Beautiful”, a co-lead vocal number that closes out Attica. Wussy does not have any current local dates, but given the huge success of this particular show, I can’t imagine it will be long before they return East.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards clamped up high to the soundboard cage and mixed with an excellent feed from the band’s local FOH David Fine. The sound quality is quite exceptional and really very well captures the energy in the room. Enjoy!

Lazyeyes: January 11, 2015 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Lazyeyes have been on the NYCTaper radar for quite a while. Their 2013 self-titled EP was a breath of fresh air — four bright, smart and energetic tracks that brought the band a nice bit of press and some momentum. We made several attempts to get the band on the site at that point but it never quite worked out for one reason or another. Our persistence has been rewarded because last week, the band released their second EP New Year which is a similarly high quality indie-gaze collection and the initial reviews are all positive. Lazyeyes short East Coast tour in support ended with the EP’s release show at Baby’s All Right. The group played a tight thirty-five minute set that consisted of the entire new EP, three of the four songs from the debut EP, and one new song. The set was so well received by the crowd that Lazyeyes was called back for an encore. We’re streaming the final track of the set proper, a strong version of the new “Adaptation”. Lazyeyes will next play NYC at the Brooklyn Night Bazaar on January 31.

This set was recorded by House FOH Rubes, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed on the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Fat White Family is not a subtle band. In an era of “chill wave” and “chamber pop” and “nu gaze”, these former South London squatters are loud, rude, and beholden to no artificially-defined style. If you want to know what type of music they make, just consult one of the band’s song titles — “I Am Mark E. Smith”. And while the music of The Fall is clearly an influence, Fat White Family doesn’t simply sneer. They sweat, spit, expose themselves and generally make a depraved mess of the whole thing. But don’t let the stage antics hide that musically, Fat White Family is an entertaining band playing a contemporary British garage rock. Their debut album Champagne Holocaust was originally self-released but after gaining some notoriety in the UK — positively and negatively, the album has been released in the US by Fat Possum Records. The band was in the States for a while in the Fall and made a splash during CMJ for not only their music but the stage antics. In December, Fat White Family did a two-week residence at Baby’s All Right and we caught the final night in what would be the band’s last show in the US until March of 2015. This set is a full one and perhaps the longest time-wise of all of the recent US shows, encompassing basically all of the songs the band worked up for the live show which includes much of Champagne Holocaust and only two older tracks, the aforementioned “Smith” and the band-name-generating “Bomb Disneyland”. We’re streaming “Heaven on Earth” which begins and carries through with a familiar surf-garage guitar line that makes the song perhaps the most accessible of the set. Fat White Family will return to the US in March and we’d recommend catching their highly entertaining show at least once.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed on the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!
