D. Charles Speer & the Helix: May 25, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We were thrilled to get a chance over Memorial Day weekend to check with D. Charles Speer & the Helix. We followed frontman Dave Shuford’s other band, Rhyton, quite a bit last year (not to mention our love for the separate work of Helix keys man Hans Chew). Now, after two Rhyton albums, Shuford is re-focusing on the Speer project, and if the material we heard on this night at Mercury Lounge is any indication, they have some good stuff up their sleeves. Two of our favorites from this set were “Cretan Lords”, which boasts inspired guitar work that alludes to the style of the Greek island for which it’s named, as well as the new midtempo psych-boogie burner “Doubled Exposure,” which adds some reggae flavor to the band’s already-complex stylistic mix. We also loved the band’s cover of the Jim Jackson classic, “Bootlegger’s Blues”. Keep an eye out for a new record from the Speer gang in the relatively near future, but until then, we hope this tides you over.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for this venue, with a soundboard feed from the Mercury FOH team and Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones. There are some issues with a vocal mic during the first song, “Red Clay Road” and light DI noise can be heard at especially quiet points during some numbers. Overall, though, the sound quality is outstanding per our usual for this venue. Enjoy!

VietNam: May 18, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The conventional description of the music of VietNam is that its 60s-influenced. But given the long hair, long beards, clothing styles, crowded stage of multi-instrumentalists, and melodic back-beat minor-chord based songs, its pretty clear this band is directly descended from the mid-70s post-hippie movement personified mostly by the Rolling Thunder Revue. As with Rolling Thunder, the stage energy is focused primarily on one enigmatic and magnetic presence, in this case its Michael Gerner who last released a VietNam album in 2007. The surprising return of the band is buoyed by the new album A.merican D.ream (Mexican Summer Records) which like its five-year old predecessor, is a strong album of self-described “apocalyptic street blues”. At Glasslands on Saturday last, the band completed a short tour and the hometown show was both a strong finale to the tour and a reintroduction of VietNam as an excellent live band. The setlist was equally distributed among the new album and the older one, and during the hour-long set we became completely convinced that the band does its predecessors proud.

I recorded this set with our installed Naiant cardioid microphones mixed with an excellent board feed provided by Glasslands superb FOH Josh. The sound quality is superb, enjoy!

Friend Roulette: April 5, 2013 Bushwick Starr – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

[Photos by Jill Harrison at For the Love of Brooklyn]

We joined the band Friend Roulette last month at the Bushwick Starr to celebrate the release of Paul Damian Hogan the Third’s new record, but Friend Roulette had some celebrating to do of their own. This month they dropped their latest creation, the full length LP I’m Sorry You Hit Your Head, an album rich with whimsical orchestral pop creations. Singers/songwriters Matthew Meade and Julia Tepper show a variety of influences in their work, including classical music as well as film scores, and their willingness to venture afield from standard verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus structure is commendable. Throw in dual percussionists along with strings, keys and sax and you have a lot of layers for your brain to process — a challenge for the listener, but also a journey worth making. Pulling these songs off live was a challenge of its own in a stripped-down space, but the band showed no hesitation on this night, covering material from their first EP right through the new record. Streaming below is “Golden” from the new album, but we’d recommend hitting up their bandcamp page, where you can stream (and buy) the whole thing.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in an “ORTF” pattern, which provides optimal stereo imaging and reflects the acoustics of the space accurately. Enjoy!

Amanda Palmer: May 25, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming (Mermaid Support Download)

I think its fair to say that Amanda Palmer is an artist who generates strong feelings. Her followers are passionate ardent supporters. I consider myself one of them. We love her persona, her music, and her fan-based approach to the business of music. But she has her detractors, some of whom are my friends and who I consider to be honestly misguided. We agree to disagree. Others unfortunately are loud obnoxious self-loathing misogynist thugs who hate simply because a woman with a strong personality cuts against the grain of traditional approaches to music. Whatever your feelings, you have to respect what she did on Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom. Amanda was sick, but took a train from Boston to play a show for free to support a very worthy cause, the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, which due to storm damage, is in danger of being canceled this year. For her headlining set, Amanda also brought out all the stops. The set opened with her grand entrance, carried onto the stage in a mermaid outfit, where she opened with a cover of the Disney Little Mermaid theme “Part of Your World.” The setlist consisted of a mix of eclectic covers, classic AFP material, a compelling new song, and the surprise of the evening, a Dresden Dolls reunion and the performance of two Neutral Milk Hotel covers. Amanda ended the memorable night was the classic “Ukelele Anthem” which we’re streaming below. Amanda Palmer will return to NYC with the Grand Theft Orchestra for a free outdoor show at Damrosch Park on August 9.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, Sennheiser cards mounted in the balcony and mixed with an excellent board feed. The room was again expertly mixed by Bowery FOH Kenny, and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Stream “Ukelele Anthem”:

This show was a benefit, as will be this download. If you would like to download this performance, you must donate to the Mermaid Parade. The Kickstarter is HERE. There are 7 days to go, and the kickstarter is $9000 short.

June 2013 Update. The Mermaid Parade Kickstarter was a success as it raised more than enough money to fund this year’s parade. So, this download is no longer contingent on a donation to that kickstarter, since its over. Iron and Wine: May 19, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Iron Wine PSq

Exactly four years ago, Sam Beam took Iron and Wine into a series of intimate venues for a solo tour of very memorable nights. We were fortunate to capture one of the two nights at the tiny Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side and it was one of the best shows we saw that year. On Sunday night, we caught the Portchester stop on the current tour and the stage setting couldn’t have been any more different. This version of Iron and Wine has 13 people on stage, including a horn section and a string trio. Sam is touring on the new album Ghost On Ghost and the new release is a “big” record with wide arrangements and touches of jazz, bebop and ragtime, which makes the big band necessary for the new material but also offers the opportunity to re-figure some older material. Early in the set we were moved by the new arrangement of “Kingdom of the Animals” and we are streaming it below. The Capitol show was lengthy with a representative setlist of older and new songs and a few covers, and also included a short solo segment mid-set. Despite the nearly two hours of music, the juxtaposition of styles, witty banter and full stage kept the show moving and it was thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining throughout. Iron and Wine will tour Europe beginning later this month before returning for Fall dates in Canada and the US.

I recorded this set under some difficult circumstances. Due to venue restrictions for a seated show, I was set up at the very rear of the floor and was only permitted to raise the mic stand to about 4 feet. The result is that the recording is somewhat muffled, but more troublingly the low height captured a hum/buzz in the left channel from what I believe was the lighting system in front of the mics. Otherwise, the recording is well balanced and has a nice deep presence. With these caveats, enjoy!

Doe Paoro: May 14, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We first caught Doe Paoro a year ago at Cameo Gallery, and she wowed us with her sincerity and her unique approach to pop music. Taking the stage at Glasslands, nominally as a support act but as the one with the largest crowd by far, Doe Paoro, showed added poise in her live performance and some subtle refinements to her sound. She also had two songs, “See Me Now” and “New Lows”, to share from a new 7″ release. Boasting a completely new look from last year’s more 90s-inspired digs, Sonia (her real name) came across as a more mature but equally strong performer, continuing to meld vocals that draw from a number of singing traditions with arrangements that draw from reggae, R&B, pop and rock. Along with her bouncier numbers like “Born Whole” and “I’ll Go Blind”, Sonia’s ballads shouldn’t be ignored, either. Both “New Lows”, the new song, and “Live Again” were particularly strong. We look forward to seeing what Sonia will do next.

I recorded this set with the installed Glasslands rig, combining the Naiant  X-R cardiod microphones with a soundboard feed by the Glasslands engineer Chris. To minimize distractions during the quieter songs, the recording favors the soundboard feed. Enjoy!

Grandchildren: May 15, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Show

May 20, 2013

grandchildren2013-05-15-1

Grandchildren is hardly the only criminally underrated band out of Philadelphia right now (we’ve written about several of them) but they are one of the most compelling. This band has mastered the art of dense, lushly orchestrated rock music with a modern electronic twist — exactly the kind of current sound that screams for a wider audience. Here at Glasslands to celebrate the release of their third LP, Golden Age, the band showed the maturity, poise and musical prowess we first saw in them back in 2009, this time backed by their strongest and most consistent material of their career. Picking a “highlight track” for this show was almost impossible, as Golden Age serves up one good song after another, and the band has worked hard to make the big arrangements come across live. Songs like “No Way Out” excellently demonstrate the band’s refinement of their sound and their ability to write songs that can appeal across genres and generations of fans.

I recorded this set with Naiant X-X omnidirectional mics at the stage lip, plus the Naiant X-R house mics and a soundboard feed from the night’s hardworking engineer Jeremy. The sound quality is outstanding, and we are so pleased with it we are offering the entire set streaming below in addition to MP3 and FLAC downloads. Enjoy!

Rathborne: May 14, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Luke Rathborne is young, has an LP and two EPs under his belt, and he’s just getting started. Rathborne’s 2011 record, After Dark, was recorded when he was a young man of 17; he came here at 18. We found him at Glasslands less than two years later celebrating the release of a new album, SOFT, that refines the sound of those rawer earlier experiments. Styling the performing band simply Rathborne, the group took the stage and kicked off the Replacements-esque “Wanna Be You” without a second’s hesitation. Rathborne is a natural presence onstage, with a refreshing kindness and innocence to go with his rock poise. He may not have even been born then, but Rathborne is clearly a student of the 80s, particularly New Wave acts like the Cars. Most of the songs played clocked in under three minutes and exuded fresh energy. Rathborne closed the set with “So Long NYC”, about the all-too-common story of your dreams washing out. But for Luke Rathborne, his own dreams are very much alive.

I recorded this set with our Glasslands house setup, including Naiant microphones and a mix provided by house engineer Chris. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Night Beats: May 8, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

nightbeats2013-05-08-4
[Photos by acidjack – the band and recording are much better than these photos]

Last time we saw Seattle’s Night Beats they blew us away with their energy and ability to delivery a set of straight-ahead garage rock full of songs you’d remember the next day. This show at Glasslands found them in the familiar spot of opening for another critically acclaimed band — in this case, Iceland’s Dead Skeletons — and Night Beats gave a performance that was every bit the equal of their earlier headlining set at the Knit. Even more special this time around, the band played almost entirely new material from their next record on Trouble In Mind, which drops in August. The band is not ready to share the titles of them yet, but it’s safe to say that if you dig their first LP and EP, the new songs will make you happy. The new material features some excellent guitar work at points, including some pretty serious shredding during the second of the new numbers. Keep an eye out in the coming months for more info on the new album.

I recorded this set with the Naiant X-R microphones mounted in the venue plus a soundboard feed from Jeremy, the night’s engineer. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper: May 11, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

May 13, 2013
By

ladylamb-2

It was three years ago that we saw what I believe to have been one of the first Lady Lamb the Beekeeper shows in New York, a solo set at the opening night of the Rock Shop. That was back in the days when Skippy was still in NYC and billed a show for the ages that night — Sharon Van Etten and TuneYards headlined the bill. Aly Spaltro was still a teenager at that point, but it was obvious that she was abundantly talented with unlimited potential. She was signed to Bada Bing Records, and after several self-released albums, the first proper Lady Lamb album came out this year. Ripely Pine is a superb album that highlights Aly’s strengths — emotional vocals, intimate songwriting and aggressive musicianship. This is also an album that will profile her talents to a much wider audience. We saw the beginnings of that at a packed Glasslands on Saturday night. While the front half of the crowd consisted of fan-boys and fan-girls who seemed to know all the words to the songs, the back half of the crowd contained those “here to be seen” types who are both a blessing and a curse to an artist — more ticket sales but less attention. Aly’s set consisted of much of Ripely Pine and a few older songs. We were particularly impressed with “Bird Balloons” which opened the set with a fury that never let up. Lady Lamb continues the tour on the East Coast before heading to Europe in the end of May.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, with the mounted Naiant cards matrixed with an excellent board feed mixed by Glasslands excellent house FOH Josh. The packed Saturday night crowd presented some challenges as the din of chatter is present at quiet moments. We were also visited by persistent thumps from the DJ at 285 next door. Otherwise the sound quality is excellent, and with those caveats, enjoy!
