Noah and the MegaFauna: June 24, 2012 Joe’s Pub – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming Song

How a musician makes the transition from indie rock to big-band gypsy jazz is anyone’s guess, let alone being able to pull it off successfully.  But that’s exactly what Noah Lit, the namesake of Los Angeles’ Noah and the MegaFauna, did.  Rising from the ashes of his previous band, Oliver Future, Lit enlisted friends and family (brothers Joshua and Gabriel are part of the gang) to work on and produce their great 2011 debut, ‘Anthems for a Stateless Nation‘.  And on their return to New York for this performance, the group played all of its tracks with its intricately appealing rhythms, notes and layers.  Far more than a straight run-through of the album, this crew absolutely killed it live with an energy and tautness that comes with having a talented group of musicians that really enjoy what they’re playing, for an audience that really appreciates it.  Additionally, we had the treat of a new song which we hope will appear on the band’s forthcoming record, ‘Psychopomps and Circumstance‘.

On this night, we were set up just about dead-center in the terrific sounding Joe’s Pub.  Our location was ideal and the results are quite excellent.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Wilco: June 21, 2013 Solid Sound Festival – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’ve taken road trips before to see Wilco. But I’ll admit that the trip from NYC to Northeast Massachusetts there-and-back in one day was quite a lark. We applied for media credentials months ago, and PSquared got his weeks ago, but mine came through just this past week. I moved some scheduling things around, freed up all Friday and we drove up in the afternoon. It was still light out when we arrived in North Adams, and the quaint beauty of the town was immediately recognizable. The Solid Sound Festival takes place on the grounds of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) which is located on the re-purposed grounds of all old factory and the riverside lands that surround it, and the entire complex is simply stunning in its classic charm. The riverside field next to the train tracks is the location for the large outdoor stage and is where Wilco performed. I knew this would be an “all request” set, but I was surprised to hear the rumors pre-show that it would be an all covers show. From the opening notes of the appropriate “The Boys Are Back in Town”, I sensed that this would be a very unique and special evening — and that’s exactly what we experienced. The band worked through a quick run of a handful of excellent covers before comedian John Hodgman came on stage as the “emcee”. In the both the running “randomizer” bit and the “stump the band” segment, Hodgman ribbed the band and provided an almost variety-show atmosphere to the set, which gave the show both levity and a theme. The covers were classic (Beatles, Stones, The Band), alternative (Replacements, Pavement), and pretty much everything in between — all played pretty straight-on in Wilco’s patented style. Our two favorite tracks of the evening were the epic cover of Television’s “Marquee Moon” (streaming below) which during the performance began to sound very much like the band’s own “Kidsmoke”, and reminded me that Wilco was not just playing covers but also telling us a little about what has influenced their music. For the Replacements “Color Me Impressed” (also streaming) Wilco brought out a very unexpected guest, original Replacement bassist Tommy Stinson, who played guitar on the song. It was that kind of once in a lifetime show, with constant smiles and surprises. And just when we thought we’d heard it all Wilco played a head-scratcher, a fairly straight forward rendition of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”. That one is sure to get much of the attention, but this night was much bigger than any single song. At the end of the final cover, a state-appropriate “Roadrunner”, one of my fellow tapers asked me if the extended trip was worth it. Oh, yeah.

I recorded this set from inside the soundboard cage in the middle of the field. While the elements and distance were a bit of an issue, overall the sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

When I first began going to Maxwell’s back some 25 years ago, it was to me just another of the excellent NYC-area clubs that hosted the bands I preferred. Its been the last decade where the club began to mean much more to me. While I was somewhat late to the Maxwell’s admiration party, it still hit me like a punch to the stomach when the news broke that the club would be closing for good at the end of July. In recent years as is well documented on the pages of this site, we’ve taken many trips over to Hoboken for some of the best shows I’ve seen in my entire life. The club became a home away from home — when I came in through the side door often much earlier than the time for doors, I was certain that I had a night of great music, good food, fine beer and welcome company ahead of me. Going to Maxwell’s was an escape of sorts, but more importantly it was about people — those that make a night of entertainment enjoyable in all aspects. The refreshing thing about Maxwell’s was that it was entirely free of the venue politics that plague many local venues. When I came in the door, I was welcome. And since I came so often, the staff were all familiar and friendly faces. I didn’t know all of their names, but every server, bartender, and bouncer were all the kind of people that you’d hope would run a music venue. Of particular note for me was Mike the ticket/door man who often allowed me to enter the venue early to set up equipment, and of course Carson Kopp, the venue’s head sound technician whose sound talents are well documented on this site but whose generosity, patience and sense of humor were always second to none. I expect that all of the people involved in this special place with land on their feet wherever they go, but somehow it will never be the same.

A large reason why Maxwell’s was the locale for so many of the special nights we’ve experienced was the “house band” — Yo La Tengo. We’ve seen them at times other than Hanukkah, but the vast majority of our YLT shows were during the eight day holiday. Due to some unforseen circumstances, on Saturday night a show originally billed as “Condo Fucks” in an opening slot became a two-set Yo La Tengo Maxwell’s show, and will be the final show of the band at its home venue. With that knowledge, the band’s entrance on stage in front of the red velvet curtain was instantly emotional. It was both hard to fathom and hard to accept that the band’s familiar position was its final night on this stage. Yo La Tengo has always had a keen awareness of its circumstances and its surroundings, and the setlist seemed uniquely fashioned for this night. Indeed, as “Mr. Tough” was dedicated to venue manager Todd Abramson, it occurred to me that the lyrics “we’ll forget about our problems / Ignore them for a little while / And leave our worries in the corner” quite well summarized the feeling of entering Maxwell’s for a night of music. While the weird sense of current enjoyment and the dread of the ending of something magical permeated my feelings throughout the set, it wasn’t until a beautiful quiet version of “Tom Courtenay” that the lump in my throat evolved into real tears. Its hard to lose something this special, but Yo La Tengo’s quiet first set was the cathartic remedy that we needed to help us accept our fate. After a break, the band returned with a full electric “Condo Fucks” set of garage-rock covers. It was exactly what was necessary at the exact right time — the chance to celebrate what Maxwell’s was really all about, no frills and unpretentious rock and roll simply for its own sake. The band’s final song, a super quiet and oh so appropriate cover of the Kinks’ “This Is Where I Belong” wasn’t so much a crying song as it was a wave goodbye. Ira Kaplan introduced the song by humbly noting that “this band does not exist without this club.” Indeed, much of the most important alternative rock of the last 30 years doesn’t either, and for that we can always thank and remember fondly Maxwell’s in Hoboken.

I recorded this set in the manner we’ve always been lucky to be permitted to record in this venue, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Hooded Fang: June 4, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s impossible not to like the Toronto band Hooded Fang, who play a brand of rather American-tinged pop-inflected punk that always draws a crowd, and often a moshpit. While they’re just getting their due here in America (this was only their second NYC show), they’re actually on their third record, this year’s Gravez, which is as concise a burst of infectious new guitar music as I’ve heard this side of Parquet Courts.

This show at Mercury Lounge matched Hooded Fang up with a diverse cast of U.S. and international acts, including Brooklyn’s Pow Wow and Total Slacker as well as Finland’s French Films (that recording coming soon). As I expected from listening to the record, the Fang’s set put the emphasis solidly on fun, with new tracks like “Ode To Subterrania” delivering a light take on that staple of early-20s slackerdom, living in a basement. My other favorite, “Trasher”, echoes mid-to-late 80s postpunk, in roughly the vein of the Pixies, making a nice counterpoint to some of the more straight-ahead rocking tracks. Most of Gravez was played, but the band tore through those songs so fast that it left time for older fare from their second record, Tosta Mista, including the set closer, “Vacationation”. Hooded Fang promise to be one of the most exciting bands of their kind to hit the scene this year, and I hope more New York appearances are in the offing.

I recorded this set in my usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed provided by longtime Mercury engineer Kevin Mazzarelli. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Lumineers: June 8, 2013 Mountain Jam IX (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Say what you will about Civil War Wave or the immense popularity of The Lumineers, but before you hate on the Grammy-nominated Colorado-based band, keep in mind that they’d been at this for seven years before “Ho Hey” had played on any form of rock radio. As the the most popular band playing this year’s Mountain Jam (at least in terms of mainstream appeal), The Lumineers had a lot to live up to, especially since they were opening for the veteran juggernaut Gov’t Mule. From my vantage point, I saw a band that knew where they came from, were grateful as hell for where they were at, and gave the very full Saturday crowd a set of music that ought to have shaken free a few of the doubters. If sincerity and good feeling is this band’s currency, they spent plenty of it as they thanked everyone from Warren Haynes to the ASL interpreter, and took some time in the set to hop into the crowd and play a few songs from among us. As to the set itself, nobody will be shocked to learn that their big hit got played to huge applause, but their covers of Dylan and the Talking Heads, as well as the Colorado bluesman Sawmill Joe, also brought the house down. Whether The Lumineers’ big radio run will continue is anybody’s guess, but this band has done their part to set down roots that will outlast the fickle taste of the masses.

I recorded this set with MBHO cardiod microphones from the taper’s section. There is one volume adjustment that is audible during “Classy Girls”; otherwise the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The Antlers: June 12, 2013 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Antlers are currently experiencing that in-between-albums and between-tours lull that bands enjoy after working non-stop for years in row. The period usually includes writing in the studio, solo projects and unfortunately for fans, a dearth of shows. Last Wednesday, it was the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the eclectic and groundbreaking club Le Poisson Rouge that brought the band out to play a sold out one-off show. The band’s singer and guitarist Peter Silberman at one time worked at LPR before the Antlers became his full-time vocation, and in fact the first listening party for the original self-release of Hospice took place at the club. Several years hence, the band now has two more releases to their name — enough material to play a full 90 minute show virtually without pause. The setlist was a democratic selection from each of the recent releases, including 3 of the 4 songs from last year’s Undersea EP, about half of Burst Apart, and some prime material from Hospice. We are streaming “Wake”, a powerful version that ended the main set.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards in back of the room mixed with a superb stereo soundboard feed. Due to the position of the mics, I picked up a ton of chatter and this mix is primarily the board. Enjoy!

Govt Mule: June 8, 2013 Mountain Jam – Flac/MP3/Streaming

As one of the organizers of Mountain Jam, Warren Haynes sure knows how to throw a party. This year was the ninth annual festival on Hunter Mountain and it was also the first time that the nyctaper crew attended the entire event, after a one-day flirtation last year. While Warren performed on various stages with a whole bunch of bands, much of which we recorded, the Saturday night performance of his main band Govt Mule is always the centerpiece of the Jam. This year the band performed two sets over a four hour period. The first set was primarily original Mule material, although one of the set one highlights was the jam in the middle of a twelve-minute “Effigy” that made a quick run through Johnny Cash’s “Folson Prison Blues”. But it was the second set where the band really shined, particularly in some stunning covers. We are streaming the Etta James classic “I’d Rather Go Blind”, which featured a stage-full of guests, including the Soulive horns, Bill Evans on sax, and guest vocals from Alecia Chakour. This song was the number one highlight of the entire festival for me personally during three days of music where there were countless highlights. Govt Mule will be on the Festival circuit for the entire summer starting in Europe before returning to the US in July.

The taping situation at Mountain Jam is certainly friendly. While the stages are at the bottom of the hill directly in front of the ski resort buildings, the tapers are in an advantageous position farther up the hill eye-level with the huge stacks. We utilized the Neumann TLM-102 cardioids for the entire festival because they are warm and full bodied in an outdoor setting. The Mule set was mixed particularly well, and the combination of the location, the mics and the house mix has yielded a simply superb recording — perhaps my best outdoor recording ever. Enjoy!

Mountain Goats: June 5, 2013 Maxwells – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The current Mountain Goats tour is a bit of a throwback of sorts. After tours as a trio with drummer Jon Wurster and tours where the band added new players such as horns, a second guitarist, and various special guests, this month the Mountain Goats is a John Darnielle and Peter Hughes duo. The stripped down stage show gives the band a chance to take some chances. Last week at Maxwell’s, this included some older and rare numbers, including the twelve year old never-heard-before track from the Alpha series, “Alpha Chum Gatherer” (streaming below), and some out of the blue covers (“Ripple” streaming below). This tour is also playing to much smaller rooms than Mountain Goats tend to play these days, and the chance to experience the band in an intimate setting like Maxwell’s was a treat. This tour continues through the month of June in the Midwest and South.

I recorded this set in our usual manner at this venue. The band’s outstanding FOH Brandon Eggleston is responsible for the superb mix of this particular show and the prime quality of this recording is a tribute to his talents. Enjoy!

Widespread Panic: June 7, 2013 Mountain Jam IX (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

A really great ensemble live performance unfolds like a conversation. When performers have been together as long, and achieved as much of a cult following, as Widespread Panic, fans aren’t going to be content with just great musicianship or catchy riffs. They want a set that builds a narrative through the interaction of the players, that crests and ebbs and morphs in stages. Something that takes you on a trip.

This was a wet, wet Friday night at Mountain Jam, the deluge so intense you wondered at points if you’d ever be dry again. Water flowed over everything and the mountain got turned into straight mud. But through that rain, Widespread gave a set filled with uplift, darkness, rapid-fire riffs and carefully woven jams. It was three hours of music that was thoughtfully constructed and flawlessly delivered, the perfect soundtrack to a communal night with nature and each other.

As is often the case, the highlight of the night’s set was set two, which went heavier on the psychedelic material. Kicking off with “Little Kin” things just kept stretching out as the band played a stunning “Pigeons” followed by “Disco” into “You Should Be Glad”, the perfect rejoinder to anyone who dared bitch about the rain. Saxophonist Bill Evans (whose own set was posted here yesterday) joined up for a 16-minute “Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys”, and Gov’t Mule keyboardist Danny Louis joined Evans and the band for a sick medley of “Surprise Valley”.

If you were at this show, you were soaked and probably cold. But you were also on a mountainside, with Panic to guide your night, with good feeling all around you. And that is the essence of Mountain Jam, or any of these music festivals, really — to let the music take you on a journey with your fellow fans, one that you’re better for having been on. This one was unforgettable, and in my opinion the best performance of the festival.

I recorded this set with AKG C 414 large-diaphragm microphones in the cardiod setting (and a very good umbrella!) from the taper’s section. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

One of the real treats for me of this year’s Mountain Jam — and one that many missed, owing to its placement on the sidestage — was seeing the legendary saxophonist Bill Evans and his band, Bill Evans Soulgrass, tear it up from the very front of the stage. The man has recorded with everyone from Herbie Hancock and Medeski, Martin & Wood to the likes of Willie Nelson and Mick Jagger, and his solo career on its own is entering its third decade. This afternoon show found Evans and the Bill Evans Soulgrass band focusing on material from his 2011 record, Dragonfly. Evans and his band took turns on extended solos during several points in the show, and the crowd up front was right there with them. But it was the not-totally-shocking appearance of the hardest working man at this year’s festival, Warren Haynes, that brought the loudest cheers, and “Tit For Tat” found Haynes and keyboardist Danny Lewis helping to take that song to the next level. This wasn’t a set about raging the mountain, but it was exactly what it was meant to be — a loose, fun afternoon of musical interaction among players who share well-earned respect for each other and their audience.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK21 wide cardiod microphones in an ORTF pattern generously loaned to me by fellow site contributor hi and lo, in a spot almost directly in front of Evans for an “onstage” effect. Other than the occasional “woo woos” of the friendly older gentleman standing next me, who I wasn’t about to ask to be quiet, this recording is outstanding. Enjoy!
