Everyone’s favorite Swedish psych band, Dungen, made it to town recently for a couple shows opening for Tame Impala in Prospect Park, plus a headlining set at the Bowery Ballroom. It had been a while since I’d seen the band live—that was ATP Festival (R.I.P.) 2010—and their Bowery gig found them at the top of their game. Besides drawing from your favorite Dungen records, including Ta Det Lugnt, 4, Skit I Allt, and last year’s Allas Sak (many of which have recently been reissued by Mexican Summer by the way), the band broke out a new song “Häxan,” which has been the talk of their recent tours. The band promised that they’ve approved the test pressing of their followup to Allas Sak and I know at least a few fans are frothing at the mouth for a studio version of this one. The band wraps up their U.S. tour tonight in Philadelphia, but hopefully with a new album on the way we won’t have to wait very long for their next tour.

Ultimate Painting: May 7, 2016 Music Hall of Williamsburg

Just look at their crowds on their recent tour opening for Woods, and you can tell Ultimate Painting are on the way up. The young band is already two albums in, with new material still coming, and they’ve mastered a capable and engaging live show to go with it. For their slot at Music Hall of Williamsburg last month, the band decided to roll out a few new tunes to go with regulars from their self-titled debut and last year’s Green Lanes, including the the band’s eponymous tune and their widely-beloved “Rolling In the Deep End.” The band’s low-key, 60s psych-influenced approach has found an audience not just because of nostalgia, but because of the band’s ability to craft good songs that mine that territory, the sort of numbers that you remember after hearing them only once. True to the spirit of the Velvet Underground — one of several flattering comparisons the band has enjoyed — they don’t let even their shorter performances end without some music exploration, and “Ten Street” has become that for them, with guitarist James Hoare (ex-Veronica Falls) in particular enjoying the chance to stretch his wings. Expect to see Ultimate Painting around for quite a while.

I recorded this set with Kevin Mazzarelli’s flawless soundboard feed plus Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Spacin’: May 28, 2016 Union Pool

As you can tell, we’re big fans of Philadelphia’s Spacin’, the minimalist garage-psych mind-meld of Jason and Eva Killinger. Back in April, we booked the band at Trans-Pecos, where they dug out some tunes from their latest record, Total Freedom, which came out on Richie Records earlier this year. A few weeks later, Spacin’ was back in town to open the Philly-centric Heron Oblivion/Chris Forsyth show at Union Pool to complete that stellar bill. Opening up with their take on MC5’s “American Ruse,” the band follows with “Over Uneasy” and “Titchy” off Total Freedom, and then “Empty Mind,” the leadoff track from Deep Thuds. The band have some upcoming tour dates in the Southeast in July—check here for all dates.

You knew it had to be Northside Festival because the G was barely running… But that didn’t stop us from trekking up to Williamsburg for the excellent and right-up-our-alley Monofonus Press showcase with Spray Paint, Beech Creeps, Running, Matchess, and the Kid Millions/Jim Sauter duo. You know we’re fans, so I’ll spare you my fawning, but also know that Spray Paint have a new record out on Goner Records, Feel the Clamps, which came out June 3, and it’s awesome as usual. The band showed up prepared with a lot of killer new material from that album we hadn’t heard yet like “Styrofoam Garbage,” “Brat Beater,” and “Burn Barrel, ” alongside some (slightly) older gems like “Polar Beer,” “Middle Relief,” and “Rest Versus Rust.” This show wrapped up the band’s tour, but be sure to keep an eye out for some West Coast 2016 dates to be announced soon.

Jason Isbell: June 3, 2016 Mountain Jam

You would have been safe to assume that his 2007 departure from Drive By Truckers would have been fatal to Jason Isbell’s career, but in the near-decade since the split Isbell’s solo work has eclipsed that of the Truckers. Indeed earlier this year Jason Isbell secured his first two Grammy Awards for his brilliant 2015 album Something More Than Free and its stand out track “24 Frames”. Isbell has also split stylistically from his Truckers material, as his solo records have steered towards traditional country and roots — a more natural fit for the artist.

At Mountain Jam this year, despite his high profile Isbell was given an early evening slot during the daylight. Although he would later appear as a superb guest during the Wilco set, Isbell’s daytime set was anything but uninspired. In fact, this was one of the best sets I’ve seen in many years at Mountain Jam. The band was tight, the music top notch and the performer wasn’t holding anything back. Isbell worked through a very representative set, including all of his hits, a few rare numbers, and he even stepped back in time to do a couple of this Truckers numbers.

Jason Isbell will be touring literally all summer in US and European Festivals, outdoor gigs and some club dates. He plays Bonarroo today. All dates HERE.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Wilco set and the sound quality is comparable. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: May 28, 2016 Union Pool

Chris Forsyth and his Solar Motel gang just finished up a tour with the Pacific Northwest’s monsters of psych, Heron Oblivion, and the NYC area was blessed with two stops, first at Jersey City’s WFMU Monty Hall and the second at Union Pool. Naturally, we were there at Union Pool to capture their performances (including openers and fellow Philadelphians Spacin’ which we’ll have up soon). Forsyth’s set gives us a lot to chew on: an extended, exploratory rendition of “The First Ten Minutes of Cocksucker Blues” and some of his finest vocals yet on “The Rarity of Experience, Parts 1-2.” In the group’s tradition of bringing covers out on the road—we’ve previously caught a couple renditions of “The Calvary Cross” and most recently the Dead’s “Cold Rain and Snow”—this tour saw a relentless version of The Dream Syndicate’s “The Days of Wine and Roses.” Rounding things out is the ponderous “Harmonious Dance,” ending things on the quiet side before Heron Oblivion stormed the stage. Forsyth & Co. will be back in town for another superb bill with Oneida at the Knitting Factory. Buy your tickets early and often; we’ll see you there.

Journalism: May 21, 2016 Trans-Pecos

You can’t always be sure that a band that sounds good in the studio — and Journalism sounds great on their debut, Faces — will measure up live. We’re extra-excited to report that Journalism are one of those bands, and then some, and we were grateful to host them at Trans-Pecos on a recent Saturday night. Lead singer/guitarist Kegan Zema is a savvy live performer, one who works to look and act the part, and the crack band of Mike Greene (guitar), Owen Keiter (bass) and Brendan Mehan (drums) has a well-oiled and well-practiced sound. Sound-wise, I hear a little bit of Television and Ride in them, as well as some later younger bands like DIIV and Cloud Nothings. This show led off with a new song, “Passenger,” before taking us through most of Faces. The band saved their best song (so far) for last, the propulsive, engaging “Faces I,” a rather dark take on the business of rock n’ roll itself, especially coming from a young band. In this day and age I wouldn’t disagree with Zema’s cynicism, but for his sake and ours, I hope Journalism keep on finding this ride to be worth it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones at the stage lip, plus Schoeps MK41V supercardiod mics on the room and a stereo soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 3, 2016 Mountain Jam – Hunter NY

This weekend I came across a photo of Jeff Tweedy with Bob Dylan at Bonnaroo in 2004. In the photo, Dylan is wearing a cowboy hat and looking very much like the bemused elder statesman and Tweedy is wearing a baseball cap, an exposed laminate pass and a look of a satisfied fan. To be fair, at that point in his career Jeff Tweedy had already founded one of the most influential alt-country bands (Uncle Tupelo) and carried Wilco through a series of superbly received albums and tours for nearly ten years.

Fast forward to this weekend at Mountain Jam and twelve years later its now Tweedy wearing the cowboy hat and taking the role of elder statesman. The large video screens give the crowd an ability to see closeups even if we’re fifty feet from the stage, and throughout the set it was a hoot to see the bemused look on Tweedy’s face as the Jam crowd roared for every familiar song. But like Dylan before them, Wilco’s set wasn’t just a band churning out the hits — this is an active group with new material and although Star Wars wasn’t played straight through as with the Portchester shows a few months back, the newer songs were well represented in the show, and fit well sprinkled among the familiar songs. The highlight of the set was another veteran/protege appearance, as current alt-country star Jason Isbell joined Wilco for a tremendously well played “California Stars” with dueling guitar solos between Nels Cline and Isbell. And at that high point of the set, Tweedy didn’t look bemused but truly pleased with the superb collaboration.

I recorded this set with the large diaphragm Neumann cards set up in the taper’s “section” on the hill. The sound quality absords some of the crowd chatter and some of the outdoor elements, but overall its an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Ought: May 8, 2016 Rough Trade NYC

Today, more than any other day. It’s effective as a song, even more effective as a mantra. The Montreal band Ought seem to be living by it well, unafraid to release precocious, ambitious music into the wild without precondition or posturing. Their new album, Sun Coming Down, starts off with a nearly eight-minute song, and that should tell you something about where this band’s collective head is at in terms of what their priorities are. Proudly off-kilter in some respects, but never veering from straight-up playing a good song, Ought are that band you wish your geek friend had managed to actually achieve — something smart, interesting, and also engaging. When singer-guitarist Tim Darcy makes his voice warble in that oh so strange way that he does on “The Combo” and elsewhere, it’s as if he’s making the joke you’re in on. People much older than him might look askance at acting a little silly, but he’s all-in. If you don’t like it, you’re welcome to leave, but there’s no reason for that, really.

This set at Rough Trade focused on Sun Coming Down, and if that album lacks a bit of the exuberance of the debut, it makes up for it with even more ambition. The band’s years on the road have further tightened up the sound of an act that was once a lark among roommates; like many of their hometown brethren, Ought sound like they give a fuck, and whether or not the word “punk” falls into your label for them says a lot about what you think that word means. Darcy’s sing-speak, likened at times to Mark E. Smith, is neither spontaneous nor lazy, calculated to deliver the maximum impact of what he has to say. This Sunday night crowd knew it, too, and the band delivered. By the time their first album’s title track rolled around as the first encore, even the people who had to go to work the next day knew they’d made the right decision. In the end, there’s only today, and you might as well make the most of it.

Ancient Ocean: March 29, 2016 Trans-Pecos & Bohannon/Dusenbury/Fox: March 30, 2016 Market Hotel

Today it’s a double dose of improvised and drone guitar collaborations from J.R. Bohannon/Ancient Ocean. I caught up with Bohannon last year playing under his Ancient Ocean moniker, and though that recording didn’t work out for technical issues, I was on a mission to catch another set. Finally, March presented us with two opportunities, two nights in a row. The first sees Ancient Ocean joined by Chuck Johnson on pedal steel at Trans-Pecos for long southern-tinged, drone-y guitar workout. Rumor has it this performance will lead to future collaborations between Bohannon and Johnson, so keep an eye out.

The second performance captured here finds Bohannon joined by Liturgy’s rhythm section—Tyler Dusenbury on bass and Greg Fox on drums. This one starts out with some droning guitar from Bohannon, but the trio quickly finds its groove and the rest of the set is a shifting neo-Krautrock jam that won over Faust’s packed Market Hotel crowd rather quickly. It’s not quite what you’ve come to expect from Bohannon, nor from two former members of Liturgy, but the trio stake out some interesting new territory in their first collaboration. I hope there’s more to come from these three!

Acidjack recorded the Trans-Pecos set with a pair of stage mics capturing the performance up close. I recorded the Market Hotel set with our built-in Audio Technica mics plus a board feed from Market FOH, Jason. As goes without saying, the sound here is excellent. Enjoy!
