The Notekillers are one of the more interesting and unique stories in music, an history that we outlined when we recorded the band nearly two years ago at a benefit for Jonathan Toubin. The Notekillers have not played an NYC show since that night in 2012, but the band came together for another special night on Thursday. The space at 915 Wyckoff has been dormant since the Summer of 2011 when the Silent Barn was closed. In the interim, the building has been brought up to code and ToddP has now opened the new fully legal venue Trans Pecos on the site. Thursday was the debut show for the venue and we were fortunate to be there and get a good look at the place. The venue will continue to evolve in terms of physical layout and site upgrades (including outdoor patio) and the music and entertainment aspect will be produced by a series of excellent curators. The fine Brooklyn boutique label Northern Spy Records will curate every Thursday and their first event was a eclectic mix of genres. The Notekillers set was forty minutes of their proficient instrumental avant punk/prog/jazz and it was engaging from start to finish. From up close, it was a treat to watch a musician of such accomplishment as David First, but the band is truly a trio of equals as bassist Stephen Bilenky and drummer/saxophonist Barry Halkin certainly held their own. The band played songs from both their 77-81 Compilation and their 2011 comeback album We’re Here To Help, including “Eyelash” that we are streaming below.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted on-stage in the middle of the three performers, and mixed with a slight bit of soundboard feed as enhancement and volume for the sax. The mix is primarily the onstage mics, which captured the sound superbly. Enjoy!

The Blind Shake: October 27, 2013 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When Thee Oh Sees toured last month, John Dwyer brought Minnesota’s The Blind Shake on the road with them. Last month, we saw Blind Shake twice in NYC, but much preferred the more intimate 285 Kent set. The band plays an angular brand of garage punk, not dissimilar from Thee Oh Sees, but with a decidedly less 60s feel and perhaps a bit of a post-punk edge. Their set at 285 was fast and furious — the band literally took no significant breaks in between songs, so that they played 13 songs in barely 30 minutes. The Blind Shake have two full albums, an EP and several singles and their most recent record Key To A False Door is on Dwyer’s Castle Face Records. The setlist drew from their releases and also seems to include some unreleased tracks. The band just completed a lengthy US tour, so there are currently no dates but we’ll be sure the catch The Blink Shake when they return to NYC.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Thee Oh Sees set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

It took place on Thanksgiving night 1976, and it is perhaps the greatest rock and roll concert ever — certainly in the top ten. As a concert, The Band’s The Last Waltz featured one of the premiere acts in the history of rock music retiring from touring in their prime and playing their greatest material accompanied by a who’s-who of guests. This isn’t just a few cameos from some big names — these are all-time performances from the greatest of the great. Dylan, Clapton, Neil, Van, Joni, and many others including everyone from Neil Diamond to Muddy Waters. The movie was directed by Scorcese is also perhaps the best concert film ever recorded. As a tribute to this remarkable and historical event in music history, The Complete Last Waltz is a project of tremendous ambition and respect for the history of the event. Last year the project was performed in San Francisco, but this year it moved East to the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Thanksgiving Eve. The house band presented a bookend of sorts for this year for me personally, as the musicians were in large part the same group that had performed so admirably for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Brooklyn Bowl in January. On this night, the band lead was taken by Sam Cohen and he did an extraordinary job both performing the songs to which he was assigned and passing the spotlight to the queue of outstanding guests. For this four-hour event it would be unwise to summarize every highlight, as there were plenty. I’ve chosen to stream four tracks from this event, which were personal favorites. Eric D. Johnson of the Fruit Bats (RIP) performed Van Morrison’s “Caravan” with Van’s 70s energy and his clothing outfit, including the bell bottom jeans. Eric Earley, from nyctaper-faves Blitzen Trapper, performed the entire Dylan suite impeccably with “I Don’t Believe You” echoing the career highlight of the Dylan & The Band collaboration, the 1966 tour. Another site favorite Cass McCombs played three Band songs, of which we thought he completely nailed “Stage Fright”. Finally, Kenny Siegel of whom we were not previously familiar summoned the ghost of Richard Manuel for a perfect rendition of “The Shape I’m In”. But those four songs are just a sample of the amazing music made that night. I recorded this set with the four-mic rig from the unfortunate official taping location in this venue, which is situated behind the soundboard and about 30 feet back from the balcony overhang. The other unfortunate circumstance at this show was the outrageous persistent yapping from much of the crowd — I mean people just would not stop talking. This despite a very nicely worded request on page two of the official Program asking people to refrain from talking or move the lobby. With those two very big caveats, please enjoy this recording!

Beach Fossils began their set last Friday at 285 Kent midnight show at about 2 am. The band has been on tour since late October, and this was their homecoming party. As these “friends-only” shows tend to be, this night was loose, fun and at times inspired as heck. The show was really two shows — the first half a standard run-though Fossils favorites, including a nice mix of songs from both albums. The second half of the show began with the pairing of “Careless” and “Clash The Truth” — long versions with extended noise jams. It was after the introduction of Chris Hansell and the cover of anti-hardcore band No Trend (“Reality Breakdown”), that things began to get wild. For the balance of the set, the band played extra loose and the final two songs were crazy and cacophonous — and extremely fun and entertaining.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on the beam ten feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

If you had told me back in 1997, when bands like Mogwai first hit the scene in the U.S., that heavy instrumental post-rock would one day be a somewhat popular genre, I’m not sure I’d have believed you. Sure, some of the credit goes to TV and movie soundtracks, but mainly, this genre’s emergence is the results of relentless touring and high-quality output of its practitioners. Boston’s Caspian, part of what could be called the second wave of the scene, and masters of the style, are a great example. I first saw them deliver their relentless, dynamic show at the relatively tiny Studio at Webster Hall back in 2010. Now, an album and a couple EPs later, they can pack them in at Bowery Ballroom on a freezing Sunday night. For progressive music, progress.

Caspian practice the same soft-loud dynamic as many of their contemporaries, but what struck me about this show was how heavily this band emphasizes the loud part of that. The whole room shook with the sound of songs like the band’s classic “Moksha”, with its epic sweep, or “Ghosts of the Garden City” from the album Tertia. From the band’s latest EP, Hymn for the Greatest Generation, we got “Halls of the Summer”, a forward-looking track that shows the band is keeping up with current trends by incorporating subtle-yet-effective electronics.

This has been a hard year for the band, having lost bassist Chris Friedrich unexpectedly earlier in the year. The band’s attitude has been to celebrate Chris’ legacy by moving onward and forward with their music. This show, and the huge reception by the fans, shows that it’s working. We hope to see Caspian’s upward trajectory continue.

I recorded this set in the usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the house engineer Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Mike Doughty: November 22, 2013 9:30 Club (DC — 2 sets) + November 23, 2013 Webster Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Mike Doughty promised to reimagine some of the favorites he wrote with Soul Coughing, and with a successful PledgeMusic campaign, he made it happen. The new LP features brand-new arrangements that hew closer to the vibe of Doughty’s solo work, with more straight singing and less of the scatty sing-speak that he popularized as “M Doughty” back in the Soul Coughing days.

Doughty has refused to play Soul Coughing songs live for years; his book documents his animosity toward his former bandmates and his perception of how and why the band ended. When he played an acoustic doubleheader at City Winery earlier this year, it was the first time I had seen Soul Coughing material live since the late ’90s.

You don’t have to buy into, or agree with, Doughty’s perspective on the band’s breakup to enjoy the new-old songs. If you were a fan of the band in its heyday, it won’t take long to remember how infectious and unusual many of these songs were. From their breakout hit “Super Bon Bon” to their big hit “Circles” to Ruby Vroom’s standout “Screenwriter’s Blues”, this sound hasn’t been replicated by anyone. It was Doughty’s, and his bandmates’, alone.

We are offering three shows in this post: First, an exclusive “VIP” acoustic performance of five songs prior to the main set at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC; second, that night’s main set, where Doughty paid a much-deserved and touching tribute to the deceased longtime 9:30 Club fixture Josh Burdette, the kind of person that, if you have ever been to that club, you would remember. Finally, we have a homecoming performance at NYC’s Webster Hall, which due to my failure to charge my preamp, is missing the last few songs. It and the 9:30 Club set are fairly similar.

The acoustic set is the best example of where Doughty is musically today — you hear him deliver some powerful renditions of both his solo stuff and Soul Coughing material in a manner that he grew more comfortable with over the past decade-plus. It’s heartfelt and reflective, more personal than any Soul Coughing performance ever came across.

The Soul Coughing material presents a different challenge. You have a performer who used to be known for spastic, hyperkinetic performances in his 20s, backed by musicians from a variety of disciplines, trying to redefine that material in a newer, more mature image. Soul Coughing shows were just that — shows — and some songs’ delivery covered up some of the original arrangements limitations. In some instances, these “re-imagined” Soul Coughing songs felt the way Doughty said in The Book of Drugs that he wanted them — leaner and meaner, with fewer distractions. “Unmarked Helicopters”, from the X-Files soundtrack, certainly makes that argument, as do, among others, songs like “True Dreams of Wichita” and “Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago”. “St. Louise is Listening” highlights its essential opening lyric when Doughty’s smoother arrangement is deployed.

In other cases, the reimagination becomes more of an adjustment: Without the classic bass line once played by Sebastian Steinberg, a song like “Super Bon-Bon”, with its mad flow and seemingly random lyrics, is no longer what it was. Absent the classic loop credited to Mark De Gli Antoni on “Screenwriter’s Blues”, Doughty’s lyrics have a different cast than they did in the original. That said, that Doughty dared to mess with his original success on this album is a credit to his growth in the past 13 years. As a fan of both his solo work and Soul Coughing, I think I speak for more than myself that we always hoped to hear some of his ’90s work alongside his current material. So, Mike — thank you.
