Futurebirds: November 12, 2015 Bowery Ballroom

IMG_1361

It’s been a satisfying few years for the Futurebirds, as we’ve watched them grow from Union Pool headliner to solid opening band to second stage at Mountain Jam to 2013 at the Bowery Ballroom. This show at the latter venue found the band doubling down on their strengths, as they jammed out their signature brand of country-inflected, booze-friendly Americana in front of an audience who knew and appreciated what they were in for. As their popularity has grown, the Futurebirds haven’t made the mistake that some bands do of overcomplicating things; if you listen to 2015’s Hotel Parties, you’ll find a good bit of stylistic and subject matter similarity with Hampton’s Lullaby, the six-year-old album that started it all. Perhaps that’s part of why, in an age where most bands are lucky to get an approving corporate blog mention or two, the Futurebirds have an entire fansite dedicated to them, and going to their shows has even become a verb (“birding”).

What has grown since the first time we saw the band in 2011 is their level of confidence, earned through that same relentless touring that’s responsible for the loyal fan base. This show found them the most comfortable and in control as we’ve seen them yet, as they ripped through new songs “twentyseven” and early number (an inspired, extended run through “Ski Chalet” alike. Futurebirds are a band that’s able to both bring the party and keep things musically in their lane, and based on this evening, we expect their success to continue.

Eric PH recorded this set with AKG 460/ck61 cardiod mics and a soundboard feed from Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: November 12, 2015 The Bowery Ballroom + New Show Announcement!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band

It’s been a wild, satisfying year for those of us following Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band. I’ve been treated to so many live excursions from the band since January, I’m running out of adjectives. Luckily they’ve got an upcoming 2xLP+7″, The Rarity of Experience, dropping early 2016 to help me replenish my vocabulary. Three songs from this Bowery Ballroom set will feature on that album: “Anthem,” “High Castle Rock,” and “The Rarity of Experience, Parts 1–2.” The back half of the set covers last year’s Intensity Ghost, with “The Ballad of Freer Hollow” and the dreamy, meandering closer “I Ain’t Waiting.” Opening up for the alt-country Futurebirds, you might think Forsyth and gang would hold something back for the unfamiliar audience—instead, they let it rip and I’ll daresay they won over an unsuspecting crowd entirely.

I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue, with a board feed from FOH Kenny. The sound is fantastic. Enjoy!

New Show Announcement!
We are extremely pleased to be able to bring Chris Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band back to NYC. On December 12, 2015, NYCTaper Presents the band at Trans Pecos. The direct support for this show is provided by the outstanding Maine-based psych-rock band Herbcraft. Tickets are available now at Ticketfly [HERE]. The Facebook invite page is here.

Zs: September 8, 2015 Bowery Ballroom

Our recent post of the great Greg Fox’s Hopscotch Festival duo set with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma reminded me that we had this Zs performance from September at Bowery Ballroom in the archives. The chance to go back and produce the recording gave me a second listen to what was at the time an excellent set but in retrospect is really one of the most astonishing shows we’ve seen all year. Zs opened this night for Thee Oh Sees (posted here), an odd pairing at first glance but one that gave band leader John Dwyer a chance to reunite with Zs founder Sam Hillmer after years playing in parallel music scenes. Sam founded Zs fifteen years ago, and while the band has been a fixture in the DIY scene since 2000, the personnel has morphed over the years. The current trio of Sam, Greg and guitar wizard Patrick Higgins has coalesced into a unique mix of noise, jazz, and avant to form a truly superb musical conglomeration. The band’s latest album Xe was released on the excellent local label Northern Spy in January to very strong reviews.

This performance at Bowery lasted less than an hour but kept the crowd transfixed for the entire set. For a 500-strong who came expecting some raging gararge rock, the powerful avant trio must have been a bit of a culture shock, but most picked up on the vibe pretty quickly. Zs worked through the new album in order, skipping only the opening track. The centerpiece of the set was the nearly nineteen-minute “Corps”, which gave each band member a chance to take center stage and showcase their immense talents.

Zs will be playing another local show at Palisades on November 20.

Luna Dean Keim 2

Ten years ago Luna retired with a series of shows at the Bowery Ballroom that eventually became part of the documentary Tell Me Do You Miss Me. In their return for two shows last week the band were well aware of the connection, but in their infinite jest used the reference as inspiration for their usual relaxed and often hilarious banter. When a band feels like they’re playing in front of friends, the show tends to be a celebratory affair and that was exactly feeling on this Wednesday night. In terms of the setlist, Luna pulled out a few numbers that haven’t seen much rotation this tour — “Fuzzy Wuzzy” and “Anesthesia” among them, the latter of which we are streaming below. Its going to be a good time for Luna fans here at NYCTaper. After this Bowery show, we’ll also have at least two more recordings.

I recorded this set in our usual location at Bowery. The mix in the room was terrific and we supplemented that with a feed from the board that fortified the vocals. The result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Built To Spill: September 25, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

BTS Will
[photo courtesy of Will at We All Want Someone To Shout For blog]

In the lead up to this show I realized that in a few months, it will be twenty years since the first time I saw Built To Spill live. That early 1996 show at the late great Tramps was a revelation — I mean, who knew that a band of guitar wizards could come from a place like Idaho. But from that day forward I’ve followed Built To Spill and seen them live consistently ever since, close to thirty times. Indeed, they’ve been on NYCTaper fourteen times. So I think I have a pretty good idea of when the band is playing well and whether a particular show is a good one. Last Friday at Bowery Ballroom, I’m pretty sure I saw one of the best BTS shows of all of them. This was a night that started with a “wow” version of “Time Trap” and never let up. The band is currently on tour in support of their new album Untethered Moon — their first new release in six years. Perhaps its the excitement of the addition of the new songs to the setlist, but there seemed to be a renewed energy on stage, and in the crowd the energy was returned. You can hear from this recording how engaged was the Bowery faithful. We are streaming two highlights from this show (of many). At eight minutes in length, “Velvet Waltz” is one of the longest tracks on one of our favorite BTS albums (Perfect From Now On), and on this night the closing jam just went bonkers and kept the song going for twelve minutes. In the encore segment, the persistent fans who had been calling all night for “Joyride” were treated to an scorching version of one of the band’s earliest singles — it was Doug Martsch’s best solo in a night filled with them.

I recorded this set from our standard Bowery location. But this one is special. It was mixed perfectly by the band’s tour FOH Eric and we used primarily the room mics in this mix. There’s about 25% of the board feed to supplement the vocals and overall the sound quality is quite superb. Enjoy!

Thee Oh Sees: September 8, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Thee Oh Sees 2
[photos by Will from We All Want Someone To Shout For]

I’ve been pronouncing Thee Oh Sees at one of the best live bands around for several years now. As our readers can now attest — since we’ve compiled a nice live archive of their NYC shows — this band is an aggressive, tireless, and a thoroughly committed live act. The band added a second drummer earlier this year and for recent shows, Thee Oh Sees are featuring the two percussionists side by side at center stage. The new configuration accentuates the rhythmic qualities of the band’s music, but make no mistake bandleader John Dwyer is still in the spotlight. The band is currently on an extensive Fall tour in support of their new release Mutilator Defeated At Last which for our money is one of the best albums released in 2015. These new songs have become quite familiar over the last year as we’ve watched their development live going all the way back to last Summer at McCarren Park and through a pre-release show at Hotel Vegas for SXSW. In between, last year’s Bowery show was our best sounding recording of the band thus far. Tuesday’s show mixed in the newer songs with older classics seamlessly, as the first eight songs rotated old and new but kept the crowd bouncing and jumping throughout. Thee Oh Sees even managed to slip what appeared to be three completely new songs into the setlist. We’re streaming the punky “Rogue Planet” from Mutilator and the final jam, a lengthy version of the oldest number of the night “Contraption/Soul Desert” which the band stretched for more than twelve minutes before bidding the sated crowd goodnight.

Thee Oh Sees also played two nights at Warsaw later in the week before continuing the tour throughout the South, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted in the balcony and mixed with an excellent board feed provided by Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Mac DeMarco: August 17, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

September 3, 2015
By

Mac-Demarco-Bowery2
[photo by Geoffrey at According to G]

Three years ago Mac DeMarco was a newcomer to NYC and a brand-new signee to Captured Tracks records. At the time it was a bit of a puzzler, as the Canadian songwriter did not fit the label’s mold. His guitar-based songs showed very little Eighties influence and his goofy sense of humor didn’t quite fit with the stoicism of Captured Tracks’ other artists. Despite all that, his charm was undeniable and the songwriting was legit. Ultimately, the signing was prescient as Mac has become perhaps the label’s most successful artist on its roster. This Summer, DeMarco released a new EP Another One and as a special treat to his adopted city, Mac played a series of four local shows on consecutive nights at four different venues.

We caught the first of these four shows at Bowery Ballroom. Freshly back from having played Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, the band seemed to have picked up a bug on the cross-country flight as Mac confessed that he was running a fever at the outset of the night. But sick or not, Mac DeMarco delivered a highly entertaining show exactly as we expected. It was a ninety-minute run through the best of his material focusing on the new release (with a few goofy covers) while simultaneously impressing us with his musical ability and songcraft all while seemingly joking around at every turn. We are streaming the opening track from the new EP “The Way You’d Love Her”, and also one of Mac’s classic songs “Cooking Up Something Good”, but make sure to download the entire show at this night was a entertaining ride from start to finish.

Mac has a full slate of tour dates coming up, as he’ll be in Europe through September before returning to NYC for another local date at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on October 10. After that, he’s touring across the US for a couple of months before finishing the year in Australia, all dates here.

Chain and the Gang
[Photo from Portsmouth by Tim Bugbee/tinnitus photography]

Chain and the Gang is the latest from provocateur and frenetic frontman Ian Svenonius (ex- Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up, Weird War). Since 2009’s Down With Liberty… Up With Chains through last year’s Minimum Rock N Roll, Svenonius and co. have been laying down heavy grooves, lampooning late capitalism, and doing it all with irresistible style. I mean, this band oozes cool—just check out those suits! Their opening set at the Bowery Ballroom a couple weeks back will give you a taste of what Chain and the Gang is all about and no doubt have you joining their crusade. But until then, I’m violating “Mum’s the Word” ’s plea for secrecy by even mentioning this performance—so let’s just keep that between ourselves, okay?

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with a board feed from Bowery FOH Kenny. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: August 2, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

[photos courtesy of Will from We All Want Someone to Shout For]

I’ve written and re-written multiple versions of my “review” of the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah 10th anniversary tour, most of which eviscerated the blog culture of previous decade where self-appointed know-nothing “tastemakers” wrung bands like CYHSY through the buzz cycle. But the reality is that most of those blogs are long gone — there’s no point in beating a dead horse. The better story here is that CYHSY are still very much alive — albeit with some different personnel. What began as Alec Ounsworth’s semi-solo project has ten years on become essentially the same project as CYHSY is now supplemented live by touring musicians. Last week’s shows at Bowery Ballroom consisted of a run through the band’s self-titled debut album, a half-dozen other numbers and one excellent cover. We caught the Sunday night show, and if the current conventional wisdom is that CYHSY are a band of the last decade, that news didn’t reach the packed crowd who sang and danced throughout the entire show. This kind of enthusiasm is built on quality music and cultivated through grassroots fan connections — the type of old fashioned “hype” that doesn’t rely on some “tastemaker” with a cute domain name spending too much time on a laptop in the parents basement. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will continue this tour internationally throughout the end of August, dates here.

This show was recorded from our usual balcony location at this venue with the Schoeps cards which were mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Thurston Moore Band: August 6, 2015 The Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Thurston Moore Band
[Photo from Portsmouth by Tim Bugbee/tinnitus photography]

Since the dissolution of Sonic Youth in 2011, Thurston Moore has kept pretty busy, between solo records, various one-offs, and noise records. Last year’s The Best Day finds Moore flirting with stretched out jams similar to Sonic Youth’s 2002 return to form, Murray Street. We caught up with Moore touring the new album last year at Saint Vitus, and while this set similarly covers most of The Best Day material, the band adds three new songs—“Turn On,” “Cease Fire,” and “Aphrodite”—scheduled to appear on the next album, which Moore says is titled Rock and Roll Consciousness and due out next year. By far the highlight of the entire hour-and-a-half show is “Turn On,” a ten-minute slow build that achieves liftoff in the back half. If this is what we can expect from the Thurston Moore Band’s second record together, I think we’re in for something that will surpass even the highest expectations.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with a board feed from Thurston’s FOH. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thurston Moore band will return to the area on September 17, at Monty Hall in Jersey City. I mean, if there was ever a reason to go to Jersey, this is it. Tickets on sale.

And if you’re in search of more live Thurston Moore, the upcoming Parallelogram box set from Three Lobed Recordings features Thurston Moore and John Maloney playing live as Caught on Tape— and it’s recorded by our very own Acidjack. Preorder here.
