Rhyton: June 14, 2012 NYCTaper Northside Festival Showcase at 285 Kent – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Rhyton is the latest project helmed by Dave Shuford – best known for his work with No Neck Blues Band and D. Charles Speer and the Helix – and compatriots Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills) and Spencer Herbst (Messages, Matta Llama). I have been an admirer of Shuford’s for awhile now; he is a musician’s musician, who pursues his vision relentlessly without regard to genre, style, texture or time. While Shuford has played everything from country-blues to Greek folk music during his career, Rhyton expresses he, SeiTang and Herbst’s experimental impulses. The band’s first self-titled LP is a masterwork of improvisation – the result of a three-day recording session, the record captures the raw, live feel of these players at their best.

I invited Rhyton to be the second band at the NYCTaper 2012 Northside Festival Showcase in hopes of seeing the exact kind of set they delivered – a two-segment, free flowing live jam so new that these songs did not have formal titles. This is music that rewards set and setting, and the post-industrial 285 Kent space, with its psychedelic wall art, was the perfect venue for the band’s mind-bending style of playing. While we (and the band) would have loved for it to be longer, Rhyton’s set hinted at the new thrills to come on their forthcoming Three Lobed Recordings LP The Emerald Tablet, due out later this year.

I recorded this set with Audio Technica 3031 microphones split wide at the stage lip, combined with a soundboard feed, to create an upfront, “in your face” style of recording that provides maximum separation between instruments.

The first thing you notice at most EULA shows these days is the high number of photographers. Looking at the fine photography we are offering with this post, it’s not hard to see why.  I have said before that Alyse Lamb is one of the most compelling frontwomen in the scene today, with the kind of onstage energy, musical chops and look (complete with DIY stage outfits) that makes people pay attention. The first time I saw this band, I was completely blown away by their raw energy and their ability to completely give themselves over to their performance. I invited them to be the first act at our 2012 Northside Festival showcase pretty much the next day, and I am thrilled that I did. This performance at 285 Kent completely raised the bar on that earlier show. The band tore through their ten-song set in under 30 minutes, barely coming up for air between songs as Lamb howled and writhed like a consummate rock star. This set was both grittier and better than I have seen the band before [ed. was it the bourbon?] and set the tone for an incredible night of music. Better yet, several new songs were played that are not on the band’s debut album, Maurice Narcisse.  Still, I found that album’s title track to be one of the show’s high points, as the band delivered a searing, slightly improvised take on the song.

I recorded this set with a new method we have not used in this venue before, placing a pair of Audio Technica 3031 cardiod microphones directly at the stage lip and combining that with a soundboard feed to boost the vocals (which are still a tad low in this mix).  The results are incredible – literally like being in the front of the crowd.  Enjoy!

Ben Folds Five: June 2, 2012 Mountain Jam – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As someone who spent their college years in North Carolina at the turn of last century, Ben Folds Five has always been special to me. A native North Carolinian introduced me to Ben Folds’ music, and the themes in the music – romantic frustration, fear of consequences, and straight-up rage at lovers who jilt you – found natural purchase in my young self. I saw the band a bunch of times between 1997 and 2000 in my then-home state, outdoors and on the quad, at the Cat’s Cradle and the Ritz. Folds and his band never disappointed, and his confessional lyrics – delivered with catchy, approachable piano melodies and vocal harmonies – were easy to sing along to (or not, since I was usually taping). It was a fitting soundtrack to a certain time of my life, made more special because the band were local boys done good. I’m sure their songs blared in my car stereo at one point or another on every state on the Eastern seaboard.

While Folds has continued with his solo work, BFF itself had not played a show together since 2008 until they took the stage on the Saturday of this year’s Mountain Jam in Hunter, NY. The memories came flooding back quickly as Folds began to pound out the opening of “Jackson Cannery” and by “Battle of Who Could Care Less” (always my favorite BFF song) I was back in full-on nostalgia mode. The band sounded as good as ever (even if the house mix did them no favors), and they gave fans a mix of their bigger hits like “Brick”, “Battle of Who Could Care Less”, and “Army” with older favorites and deeper cuts “Where’s Summer B.?”, “Uncle Walter” and another of my favorites, “Emaline”. More than a decade after their most significant albums dropped, no band is really doing what BFF is doing (please don’t bring up Billy Joel), and it was a thrill to see them doing their thing again. Even better, Folds indicated that the band will be putting out a new release some time soon. The band will be back in NYC for a Central Park show on September 14 as well.

I recorded this set with AKG 414 large diaphragm mics in “wide cardiod” mode. The first 15 or so seconds are marred by me making some adjustments to my preamp levels. After that, the only significant flaw of this recording is the overblown house mix, in which the distortion-pedal-driven bass guitar was at times too high in the mix. With those caveats, enjoy!

Gov’t Mule: June 2, 2012 Mountain Jam – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

If you’re a doubter of “jamband festivals”, this Gov’t Mule performance from Mountain Jam alone might make you reconsider. Three of us from the NYCTaper crew came out for Saturday of this year’s Mountain Jam, held at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in Hunter, NY, and the Mule was that day’s main attraction for a number of reasons. The fact that they are a legendary live band was only part of the picture this time; this particular performance also honored the late, great Levon Helm with a set that found the Mule joining the Levon Helm Band for a tribute that no doubt would have found favor with the man. On a misty night against a verdant Catskills backdrop, Mule and guitarist Warren Haynes gave a life-affirming performance that could turn the coldest cynic on to the power of music. Mountains are often used as a metaphor for the obstacles that define human struggle. This night’s music – played against those gorgeous peaks – demonstrated music’s power to transcend even death. As a series of well-known players joined the band onstage for songs from Mule, Helm and history, we were reminded note after note how lucky we are: to be listening, to be here, to be alive. For us – and I guess it’s fair to call us “city people” – this night was a reminder of the grandeur that lies beyond our steel and glass borders. Mule gave us everything they had until the mist had soaked us all. But most importantly, they gave us a chance to give thanks to those who were gone as well as those who were there with us.

Each of the three of us who were at the show recorded this set, and below we are offering two sources: First, hi and lo’s recording with Schoeps MK21s, and second, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy’s Audio Technica cardiods paired with my AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics, set to “wide cardiod mode.” Both recordings stand out in their own way and offer different “flavors” to enjoy.

Mike Watt & Friends: May 2, 2012 Le Poisson Rouge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

To paraphrase the late Jerry Garcia, not everybody knows who Mike Watt is, but those who do really appreciate Mike Watt.  Having long been established as an elder statesman of punk, post-punk and alternative rock starting with the seminal Minutemen and the inspired fIREHOSE, his versatility has allowed him to play with many musicians of different stripes and genres.  He’s a bass player’s bass player; the go-to guy who you know will hold down the low-end duties superbly and is not afraid of working hard.  If it doesn’t already, his business card should read, “Have bass, will travel.”  That’s why when people in the know hear that Watt is coming to town, they run and don’t walk to get to the gig.

Initially announced as the NYC launch of his new book, ‘Mike Watt: On and Off Bass‘, and calling the event “Mike Watt & Friends”, word had it that he was also planning to dust off the Hellride East moniker (one of his many projects) and play Stooges tunes with J Mascis and Murph from Dinosaur Jr.  After an interview session with noted music writer Byron Coley, the music kicked off and it was indeed The Stooges from their first two excellent albums.  In his element, clearly enjoying himself and fingers hammering the strings, Watt and Mascis were the only two constant musicians during the set.  At any given time the drummers were rotating between Murph, John Maloney and Sonic Youth‘s Steve Shelley.  SY’s Thurston Moore took a turn or two on vocals as did Don Fleming, John Petkovic (also playing clarinet), Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Byron Coley and Noel Ford, the former soundman from the Continental (and current one for Dinosaur Jr.) or so I was told.  It was a whirlwind trying to keep up with the cavalcade of performers who kept jumping on stage.  With the pervasive sense of “what’s next?” in the air and the close proximity of all these great artists, the small Le Poisson Rouge felt more like a party at a friend’s house with a killer band than a concert.  That atmosphere prevailed even more so when the music ended and everyone milled around chatting and drinking while the guest of honor signed copies of his book and greeted all comers with a handshake.  A truly unique evening and, personally, I can’t wait for Mike to pop up here in our city again.  Wondering in just what permutation that will be should prove almost as much fun.

This night at Le Poisson Rouge presented a unique recording opportunity for us.  Rather than having to set up towards the back of the room so as not to be in the way, we were able to park our rig right at the stage lip and nearly dead center.  Recording in this manner makes the separation of the instruments and where they were on stage very distinct.  A monitor was just off to our right so while the vocals aren’t entirely centered, the overall effect is really cool and the next closest thing to being right up front at the show.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Luther Dickinson & The Wandering: May 14, 2012 Joe’s Pub – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

North Mississippi Allstars guitarist/vocalist Luther Dickinson has made a life mission of keeping Delta blues alive while continuing to expand the genre through his own new efforts. His latest project, The Wandering, finds him teaming up with four exceptional female musicians – Amy LaVere, Shannon McNally, Valerie June, and Sharde Thomas – to honor the richness and diversity of the blues with a new record that combines new tracks and well-loved standards.  This show at the grown ups’ music paradise Joe’s Pub was a perfect platform to showcase the members’ individual and collective talents. Dickinson, as ringleader of the proceedings, gave a solo set before the band went on, which included several favorites from the NMAS catalog like RL Burnside’s “Po’ Black Maddie”.  When The Wandering took the stage, the dynamic shifted, with the four women sharing and trading the spotlight as Dickinson provided the strings. The quintet’s devotion to and love for their material is obvious; aside from the luxe surroundings and high-end sound system, you could have been in a balmy Delta club a hundred years ago. The band gave an inspired and different take on Leadbelly’s “In the Pines” (most recently popularized by Nirvana), the old standard “Glory, Glory”, and a somewhat more recent rock classic, The Byrds’ “Hey Mr. Spaceman”, among others. While each of the performers shined, one of our newest favorites, Amy LaVere, fresh off of a performance with Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes at Bowery Ballroom, particularly shined on the vocals and upright bass. Although the just-over-an-hour set was too short by half in my opinion, it established The Wandering as a formidable new entry in the modern blues arena.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I faced some challenges setting up for this show, but we ended up with our mics situated in an ideal location in the center of the venue. This recording is from my Schoeps MK5 cardiods, and boasts a full, rich sound that reflects the venue’s excellent acoustics. Enjoy!

The band Liturgy are no strangers to controversy. And given the band’s latest change in sonic direction, the Brooklyn “transcendental black metal” band can count on more of it.

As with artists like Horseback, Liturgy, and particularly frontman and founder Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, refuse to hew to genre conventions, instead using black metal as the underpinning for their aesthetic while engaging in formal experimentation. Perhaps because of this, Liturgy find themselves the only metal band playing the Pitchfork Festival, the only metal band on Thrill Jockey, and – it can’t be avoided – the only black metal band that has ever appeared on this site. Sharing a stage with Vampire Weekend and sharing a label with bands like Tortoise and Matmos is apparently not much of a cred booster in the black metal scene. But political bullshit aside, just throw the band’s last record, Aesthetica, on your turntable or iThing, and dare to say it isn’t stunning.

Of course, one of the defining characteristics of Aesthetica was the hyperkinetic drumming of Greg Fox (who took the stage with Oneida at our 5th Anniversary Concert on Saturday, and also appeared at the Notekillers’ Jonathan Toubin benefit we covered awhile back). In September of 2011, Fox announced an amicable split from the band so that he could pursue other projects, including his solo effort GDFX and his new band Guardian Alien. One might have expected Liturgy – especially being a metal band and all – to have moved to replace Fox with a new drummer. Hunt-Hendrix didn’t. Indeed, what was once a four-piece now consists of Hunt-Hendrix, guitarist Bernard Gann, and a Macbook Pro. In case you weren’t taking notes, I mentioned that this was a band that defies convention. But what about the music itself?

As I tweeted at the time, “New @LITVRGY is genre-defying, uncomfortable-making next wave shit. You may hate but you will respect.” Listening to this recording of the show, I think that is still accurate. If you’re the type of person that likes things in tidy boxes, you’ll turn this off the second the beyond-humanly-fast drum machine beats kick in at the start of  “Pagan Dawn” from 2009’s Renihilation. What you are hearing is further from convention than the band already was, and what you’re hearing bears more weird similarity to Sleigh Bells (who the band recently toured with) than anything even remotely styled “metal” that you’ve heard before. Some people won’t be able to get past that.

But if you stick around, and set aside your preconceptions, what you hear is a brash move that could pay big dividends. First of all, the ultrafast beats make the music, if possible, even more intense than it already was, and it still rocks. Aesthetica’s “Generation”, in particular, worked well in the new format, with the beats integrating well with the dual guitar assault of Hunt-Hendrix and Gann. The crowd at the metal-friendly Greenpoint venue St. Vitus – one of the overall best venues I have been to in NYC, incidentally – seemed to agree. The band played only four songs, each a fairly long composition, with three Aesthetica tracks joining “Pagan Dawn”. In my view, this set only hinted at the new setup’s potential; once the band creates new material actually designed for this arrangement, I think they are capable of blowing the boundaries wide open. With several big festival slots on the way (besides Pitchfork, the band are also playing the more metal-oriented Orion Festival in June) plenty of fans of a variety of genres will get a chance to hear this daring new sound. I predict that the open-minded will be rewarded.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed by Nick, the house engineer of St. Vitus. Not only is this venue aesthetically spot-on (and with a great bar), but it is also one of the city’s best-sounding. I look forward to coming back.

There are two main paths that bands take to success these days: There are the bands with instant buzz, who find themselves on the late night TV circuit and playing large venues instantly. (They tend to flame out quickly, too). Then there are the bands who earn it the hard way – playing 200-plus shows a year, gigging every goddamn festival and radio station and bar in every corner of the country, putting thousands of miles on a broke down van and doubly more miles on their livers and sanity, all for the love of music, sure, but also for a shot at success.

Success, for a rock band these days, is a bit redefined, but Lucero have achieved it, and they’ve achieved it the hard way. An unabashedly masculine band, whose hardscrabble tales ring with authenticity, Lucero sometimes seems to be of another era. It’s hard to argue otherwise about a band that titles their current release (their eighth record, but first on ATO Records) Women and Work. After all, for the early 21st century American man, work is something he hasn’t got, and women – well, they’re too busy doing all the work.

But that’s the beauty of Lucero – they remind you of better days, but they also remind you of the simple pleasures of the days you’re in. The boys themselves always look like they’re having fun. Frontman Ben Nichols’ most frequently-uttered phrase between songs is “hell yeah!”, and the band made quick work of a handle of Jameson onstage. Lucero’s music, even when tackling sadder subjects, has good cheer to go with its honest grit. Today we are presenting two recordings  from Webster Hall – the first from October of 2009, the second from April 20 (yes, that date) of this year. These two shows are perhaps more telling in their similarities than in their differences; the band may have continued to expand their sound and personnel, but the core of their music is consistent and strong. Maybe there’s a bit more gravel in Nichols’ pipes, but that doesn’t hurt a thing. And despite spending virtually the entire past decade on the road, they sound as fresh and hungry as ever. For example, with its early curfew, Webster Hall practically demands short sets – but Lucero played a two-hour set of nearly 30 songs. Nobody told these guys about lowering expectations.

The songs – well, there are those to talk about too. That word “honest” comes up again, when you think about a Memphis band whose sound pays homage to the country and blues and even R&B that fuel the town, but with a bit of a punk flavor thrown in. At the 4/20 show, the new songs were a blast; it’s hard to argue with the rocker “I Can’t Stand To Leave You” or the honky-tonk “Like Lightning”. A stripped-down group of personnel played “The War”, the World War II tale that could easily resonate with soldiers in Afghanistan and elsewhere today. And of course, Lucero played the favorites that the band is probably expected to play at every show, and why not? “Nights Like These” is one of those songs you never get tired of; same for the valedictory “Last Night In Town”.

Of the October 2009 show, JFCB said:

Lucero made quite the impression on me when I first saw them in early 2009. After the release of the excellent ‘1372 Overton Park’ album later that year, they embarked on a tour with fellow Memphis musician Amy LaVere and blues/rock duo Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm. Billed as the “Ramblin’ Roadshow and Memphis Revue”, it was also the first time the group ever toured with a horn section to mirror the sounds on their recent disc. Being on the road with this handpicked crew must’ve had a positive influence as both the band and the particularly boisterous crowd on this Saturday night seemed to have a great time. While drinking and fielding song requests, Lucero played the majority of ‘Overton Park’ and dug out a number of older nuggets that had the party whooping and hollering for more.

We can keep spilling words about them, but really, all you need to know about Lucero is contained in their sendoff to us at the 4/20 show: “We appreciate each and every one of y’all making dreams come true. Dreams do come true!” A lot of things about rock music have changed in the fourteen years of Lucero’s career; a lot of dreams have changed, many for the worst. We’re pleased to raise a glass to these guys realizing theirs – they deserve it.

I recorded the 4/20 show with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in a wider NOS configuration from directly behind the soundboard in order to give the recording a spacious, open sound. Johnny Fried Chicken boy recorded the October 2009 show with AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics that are always great-sounding, but especially for this band. Alabama Shakes: April 11, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Alabama Shakes recent rise in popularity can be described as nothing short of meteoric.  Less than a year ago, they were virtually unknown outside of a handful of bars in the southeastern United States.  Getting a push via the internet, word of mouth and their Alabama brethren, Drive-By Truckers, the group began to blow up, playing gigs with DBT and flooring attendees at their NYC debut this past October as part of the CMJ Music Marathon.  After a follow up at the intimate Mercury Lounge in December, Alabama Shakes blitzed our city again with sold out, back-to-back shows at the Studio at Webster Hall, Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg to coincide with the release of their first full-length album, ‘Boys & Girls‘.

The band took the stage of Bowery Ballroom to an exuberant crowd that was practically humming with anticipation.  And frontwoman Brittany Howard, bassist Zac Cockrell, guitarist Heath Fogg, drummer Steve Johnson, and keyboardist Ben Tanner brought their A-game.  With their blistering mix of soul, R&B and good old fashioned, kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll, the house was treated to a nearly non-stop set that left us smiling and wishing there were more songs for them to play.  On their current trajectory, I suspect that Alabama Shakes won’t be playing small venues for too much longer.  Definitely check them out when you can.

At the great sounding Bowery Ballroom, Alabama Shakes engineer Shane and house engineer Kenny had the sound perfectly dialed in on this night.  Set up in our usual balcony spot, we had a board feed to combine with our microphones and it has resulted in an excellent recording.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Caged Animals: March 30, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

We have been big fans of Vincent Cacchione’s music ever since I saw an incredible backyard performance by Vince’s other main project, Soft Black, back in 2010. While Soft Black continues to move forward with mastering a new record, Cacchione has delivered another record with Caged Animals. Where Soft Black is classic, organic rock n’ roll with a post-punk twist and a gloomy outlook, Caged Animals is a more au courant style of act, all heavy synths and reverbed vocals, taking cues from electronica and the “PBR&B” style of bands like The Weeknd. Perhaps it’s not surprising that Caged Animals were asked to put out their second record, Eat Their Own, on Lucky Number Music. It’s the type of project that needs to be on shelves, now.

The live version of Caged Animals, on excellent display at the Kevchino/NYCTaper-sponsored show at Union Pool on a Friday night, was a bit more organic affair than the band’s record, and I’ll admit that I’m cool with that.  Cacchione has a memorable voice, and it was a pleasure to hear it raw on songs like “Lips That Turn the Light to Fire”, one of the more Soft Black-ish songs from Caged Animals. Newer-style songs like “The NJ Turnpike” and “Instant <3 Breaker” also worked well, though.  Another of my personal favorite Cacchione songs (not played on this night) is Caged Animals’ “Teflon Heart”. This particular set ended abruptly thanks to Union Pool’s curfew, but the band still had enough time for a rocking closer, “Pink People”, from their self-titled debut.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 open-cardioid microphones and a nicely balanced soundboard feed from the Union Pool staff.  The quality is superb.  Enjoy!
