Last week Thee Oh Sees played four shows in four days in NYC and we were fortunate to catch what was most certainly the best sounding show of the week. In our many attempts to capture the live lo-fi garage rock of this amazing band, we’ve been frustrated by a series of sound issues that have prevented our capture of Thee Oh Sees with a recording that their highly energetic performances really deserve. We came close with the historic night at 285 Kent last Fall, but nothing we’ve ever presented from this band can even approach the sound of this particular show. Of course the lion’s share of the credit for the superb sound quality of Tuesday’s TOS show is credited to Bowery Ballroom (and their staff), which continues to be the best sounding room in town. The band itself was completely on during this set. They were scheduled to play forty-five minutes and instead played over an hour. And even given the lack of an encore, John Dwyer and company played virtually every song they’ve played this tour including four outstanding new numbers. We’re streaming “Tidal Wave”, which was the third song in a very high octane three-fer that opened the show. Thee Oh Sees tour continues in Chicago this week before ultimately moving West, dates here.

I recorded this show with the Schoeps in our tradition balcony location and mixed with a terrific board feed from FOH Bowery legend Kenny. As noted above, the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

For even the best of bands, there are times during their careers when they want to mix things up a bit to keep it interesting. Not only for their fans but for themselves. For more than 15 years, Lucero has never been afraid to work hard, get on the road less traveled and take some chances. On their current jaunt, billed as the “By The Seat of Our Pants Tour“, the alternative country rock/punk group from Memphis are experimenting by playing a few-nights stands in several cities (New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco), opening with acoustic sets and finishing the evenings with electric sets. With three nights here in New York alone, that makes for a lot of stage time and a lot of music. In addition to a number of songs that are regular staples in Lucero shows, it was thrilling to catch a few that we hadn’t heard in awhile and others that we’ve never heard them play live at all. Ever wanting to please, the guys dug out a sprinkling of deep and rare cuts going all the way back to their first self-released disc, ‘The Attic Tapes‘. What’s been most impressive is how well some of these pieces, already great, translate into something beautiful when stripped down and arranged acoustically. Of course, flying by the seat of your pants does include some hazards; among them, a few false starts and some indecision when fielding song requests from the crowd. But that’s just par for the course and part of the risk one takes when walking out on a tightrope without a net. When you have such an entertaining group of musicians like Lucero onstage, drawing from such a deep reservoir of tracks, you don’t really seem to mind when something doesn’t go quite as planned. And not knowing exactly what’s coming next makes it enthralling.

Set up in our regular spot in the balcony at Bowery Ballroom, the venue sound was top notch as usual. Aside from some chatter during the quieter songs, our recording is excellent. We hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!

Amanda X released one of my favorite albums of 2014, Amnesia. Its an album of straightforward gazey-dreamy guitar rock with influences as wide as 80’s Bostonians Salem 66, 90’s Northwesterners Sleater-Kinney, and the aughts Brooklynites Vivian Girls. The band has received quite a bit of positive press in their hometown Philadelphia, but it was a local booking by Edan at Death By Audio that put them on my radar. When they accepted our very early CMJ invite, we were delighted to see that word got out quickly and Amanda X ended up playing a bunch of shows that week. For our show, we placed them right smack in the middle of the nine bands, late enough in the day to draw a pretty decent crowd. And draw they did. Amanda X’s set was short but sweet and the fans in the room were quick to see what the excitement is all about. Back home now, the band earlier this week played a nice high-profile gig opening for Parkay Quarts at Philly MOCA.

Acidjack recorded this show in the exact same manner as the previous sets from this show (Schoeps Onstage + SBD) and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

The Prettiots: October 23, 2014 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Set

The Prettiots are that practiced sound of not giving a fuck. The New York trio, comprised of Kay Kasperhauser, Lulu Prat and Rachel Trachtenburg play songs that touch on many of the woes of a woman in late teenhood to her early twenties — boys, high school, self-loathing, etc. and they do so with an endearing, off-the-cuff stance that makes you almost not notice another important fact about them. The secret sauce of the Prettiots is not only that ukulele that Kasperhauser busts out, but that they can actually play. Trachtenburg has a long history as a musician dating back to childhood and the band Supercute!, of which Prat was also a member. If the songs feel, as Lucky put it, like “an epic sleepover”, they’re also executed with a kind of professionalism that bands whose promo flyers include pictures of butts and orthodontic retainers don’t always have. The Prettiots are especially well-traveled in the press for a band with not yet an album to their name, having made several swings through the blogosphere and actual print. This day show at Cake Shop was packed from start to finish — ABC News was even in the house filming the band for Taxi TV — and after the raunchy opener, a cover of Miguel’s “Pussy is Mine”, it wasn’t hard to tell why. These girls are indeed “adorable”, and their songs like “Stabler” and “Kinski” have a habit of sticking around long after the show is over.

I recorded this set as with the other recordings of the day, with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from the house engineer Clint. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

So Cow Cake Shop

So Cow released their excellent new album The Long Con on September 16, a date that fell square in the middle of a rare US tour. The tour was scheduled to coincide with the excellent Gonerfest thrown by their record label Goner. The tour also included two NYC shows, and we caught the second one at Cake Shop last week. This was the first time we’ve seen So Cow in over four years since a great set at the now long-departed Monster Island Basement in early 2010. At that point, Brian Kelly was playing with a tour band and recording alone, but now So Cow is a proper working band and The Long Con is the first full length album with the trio. The result is that the album sounds more like the live show we encountered in 2010 and again last week, and less like a Kelly bedroom recording. At Cake Shop, the band worked through a nice mix of material old and new, including the first single from the album “Barry Richardson” that we are streaming below. The album has received some excellent reviews, including a fine piece in PopMatters this week. We expect that the positive attention will propel this excellent band and that it won’t be four-plus years before we see them live again. At least I hope it won’t be.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted to the short ceiling in front of the stage and mixed with DPA omnis positioned in front of the stacks. The stage-mount provides a clear capture of the instruments while the stack tape is vocal heavy. The mix is adjusted to accentuate the positives of both sources and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Glenn Tilbrook: September 25, 2014 City Winery – Flac/MP3/Streaming

GlennTilbrook City Winery
[screen cap from this video]

As one-half of one of the best songwriting duos of the latter half of the twentieth century, Glenn Tilbrook could easily coast on his merits into a comfortable retirement. But Tilbrook last year released one of his strongest records in decades Happy Ending that could rival the finest output of the Squeeze oeuvre and he is currently on tour in the US through the entire month of October. We were fortunate to catch one of the two shows he played at City Winery last week. Glenn was in great form from the start, engaging the crowd with his very Brit sense of humor and meticulous guitar work. We were most delighted to hear that Glenn’s sweet tenor is as strong and clear as it was the first time we Squeeze back in 1981 (Pier 84), the Mercury Lounge in 1996 and through the time when they appeared at the Nokia Theatre in 2007. On this night, he played two sets and nearly two hours of music featuring the strong new songs (“Everybody Sometimes”), material from his Fluffers period and of course a very healthy dose of Squeeze classics. City Winery is blessed with an excellent sound system and good views (along with some amazing wine) and this night really could not have been more enjoyable. In November, he will tour with his writing partner Chris Difford in the UK, and it was announced at this show that the duo will come to the US in May of 2015. We very much expect to be there then.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted directly behind the soundboard and blended with an extremely tastily mixed soundboard feed provided by house FOH Jack O’Hara. The sound quality is quite superb. Enjoy!

Gringo Star: June 14, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

[band promo photo]

Gringo Star‘s formula ain’t hard to figure out, nor is it foreign to fans of the stellar garage rock that’s been pouring out of the Atlanta, GA area for the past several years. Helmed by the Furgiuele brothers — Nick and Peter — Gringo Star plays fun-loving, to-the-point tunes that find them in good company with other recent site favorites like fellow Atlantans The Coathangers and the West Coasters Night Beats. This late-night set at Mercury Lounge proved to be the kind of free-for-all you might expect, with the band as ringleaders. Their latest album, Floating Out to See, finds them in a slightly mellower, more textured mode on the LP, but in the tight confines of Mercury it all came out pure party music. I can only hope the after party was as much of a scorcher as this set.

This set was recorded by the Mercury staff directly from the soundboard and provided to us. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Marah: July 12, 2014 Bowery Electric – Flac/MP3/Streaming

July 23, 2014
By

Marah by Henry Strauss
[photo by Henry Strauss – courtesy of Music Makes Life Better]

The current incarnation of the veteran band Marah is one of the most remarkable transformations in recent memory. Marah has been an accomplished roots/alt-country band throughout the late 90s and 2000s — they were on Steve Earle’s record label, Bruce Springsteen performed guest vocals on their 2001 album, they played Bonnaroo in 2006, and Jon Wurster once played drums in the band. But their last album was released in 2010, and after some personnel changes founder David Bielanko and only other remaining band member Christine Smith moved from NYC to rural Pennsylvania and began a unique project. Mountain Minstrelsy of Pennsylvania is a book published by folklorist Henry Shoemaker early last century that collected vernacular and folk song lyrics from the mountains of Pennsylvania. David and Christine put several of the songs to music and joined with local musicians from Millheim PA to record the songs in an old church with strictly vintage analog equipment. The album that resulted from these session Marah Presents Mountain Minstrelsy is simply a breathtakingly authentic recreation of 19th century American music and perhaps the most unique music we’ve heard all year.

However, the interesting elements of this project go deeper. It ends up that the local musicians recruited to play this music themselves are a remarkable story. Kai Schafft is a Professor at Penn State, a Doctor of Sociology with an expertise in rural cultures, and an expert in the music of Harry Smith — and one heck of a banjo player. Jimmy James Baughman is an accomplished upright bass player and a leader of local Central PA legends The Chicken Tractor Deluxe. Drummer Chris Rattie is a local PA legend who once flirted with mainstream success with a band called the The Rustlanders that recorded an album with legendary producer Don Was in LA. He currently fronts his own band Chris Rattie and The Brush Valley Rumblers. But the most amazing part of this band is Gus Tritsch, who is a ten year old boy. Gus is a prodigy in the truest sense of the word — his fiddle playing is beautiful and profound and his cigar-box guitar playing is crunchy and bluesy. He plays like a man of fifty and as Bielanko has noted, Gus is in the band simply because he was the best fiddle player in town.

Marah played its only scheduled NYC show with the Mountain Minstrelsy band on Saturday last at the Bowery Electric. If there were any doubts that the band could pull off this music in a live setting, those doubts were entirely extinguished during “A Melody of Rain” (streaming below), a standout track on the record that was given new life in a full band electric setting. But that was just the start. The band worked through much of the new album but also sprinkled in a nice selection of classic Marah material. Its was especially impressive to note that the Mountain Minstrelsy band seemed equally comfortable with the band’s older catalog, particularly Gus who added some sweet fiddle runs to songs like “Barstool Boys” (streaming below — listen to Gus’s mid-song solo) and “Walt Whitman Bridge”. And speaking of Gus, one of his contributions to the Minstrelsy album “Rattlesnake” became a twelve-minute wild blues jam and the kid played the cigar box to its pinnacle. This was one of those shows that no one wanted to end, including David who asked several times for “one more song”, and the venue graciously allowed Marah to break curfew — the band performed well beyond their allotted hour slot. David spoke fondly of his time in NYC, his promise to return soon, and he and Christine finished the night with a beautiful duet on “City of Lights”.

We expect that Marah will be back in NYC with the Mountain Minstrelsy band in the near future, perhaps this Fall. And we’d seriously warn any fans of America music to be wise and not miss this show. At NYCTaper we are fortunate to be able to see the band this coming weekend down in Camden NJ at the XPonential Festival.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mounted in front of the soundboard booth about 15 feet from the stage and mixed with an excellent board feed mixed by house FOH Owen. There was one song “The Falling of the Pine” that was performed off-mic in the middle of the room and that presented a challenge, but otherwise the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Phish: July 11, 2014 Randall’s Island – Flac/MP3/Streaming

July 12, 2014
By

DSC00466

I’ll be the first to admit that my street cred when it comes to Phish is pretty light. After all, its been almost fifteen years since I’ve actually even seen the band live. That night in the Fall of 1999 at Nassau Coliseum was a fairly famous Phish event, when lyricist Tom Marshall took the stage to sing a few covers with the band. I was also at a Madison Square Garden show during New Year’s week in 1998 when the band played a mini acoustic set in the middle of the show. But 90s memories aside, I do still have some very good friends with close connections to the band — close enough to give us the first-report exclusive of the Phish reunion way back in August of 2008, for which we took a lot of flak but which ultimately proved to be correct. So when it was announced that Phish would play three local GA shows at Randall’s Island I figured it was about time I got out and saw them again and brought to the site a recording that many of our readers have asked about over the years.

The trek to Randall’s started out a little rocky — a long line and long-ish wait for the Ferry. But once on the boat the day went about as smooth as could be expected. At the GA shows, there is no “tapers’ section” to speak of, so when I arrived as the second taper to reach the spot we pretty much set up where we landed — about 30 feet in front of the board and pretty close to the ideal spot. Phish fans take a lot of criticism but in reality people were extremely nice to us and also respectful of the rigs. We weren’t able to raise the mic pole as high as I would have liked because we were instructed not to block the band’s cameras, but even with a “low” pole, there is surprisingly little chatter on this recording.

My knowledge of Phish is not sufficient for me to say whether this was a “great” show but I’m pretty sure it was a very good one. Perhaps motivated by the release of their new album Fuego, by all accounts of the current tour the band is playing very well right now. And while Friday’s show did feature songs from the new album (we are streaming the excellent performance of “Fuego”), the show itself didn’t dwell on the new material with only three played. Overall the band played a nice selection of songs highlighted by first set standouts “Bathtub Gin” (also streaming) and “Stash”, and second set stalwarts “Down With Disease” and “David Bowie” and a rare-ish cover of local band TV on the Radio (“Golden Age”). I can’t say this show will make me drop everything and follow Phish on tour, but I certainly won’t wait another 15 years to see them again.

I recorded this show with the large diaphragm Neumann mics from the front of board spot referenced above. These mics perform well outdoors and this show was no exception. There are two bumps from balloons, but with the excellent location, good crowd and no weather-related issues, this recording came out superbly. Enjoy!

acidjack and hi and lo will be recording the Saturday night Phish show for posting on the site on Sunday or Monday.

The last time we connected with Nicole Atkins her brilliant new album Slow Phaser had just been released and her tour was literally just beginning — it was the tour’s first show. That night at Bowery Ballroom there was a palpable excitement in the room and despite a huge winter storm the venue was quite filled. This album is a career-defining accomplishment and we were more than pleased when her new crack band brought the songs to life. Now with six months of shows behind them, we caught Nicole and her band earlier this month at Madison Square Park. This show was the first night of the Park’s concert series, run impeccably by the Madison Square Park Conservancy. On a beautiful summer-like night the crowd was a mix of fans, families on blankets, curious locals and park supporters but from the outset Nicole had their attention and kept it for the entire full-length show — even with the lively city noise behind us (including persistent police and ambulance sirens). There was been one change in the band which now contains one guitarist but has added a keyboardist who provided much color to the music. Nicole played much of Slow Phaser but also added a few older tracks. We’re streaming “Its Only Chemistry”, which ended the main set and contains a particularly strong vocal performance. In July, Nicole goes on a national tour in support of Nick Cave with two NYC dates, July 26 at Celebrate Brooklyn/Prospect Park and July 27 at Hammerstein Ballroom.

I recorded this show with the Neumann large diaphragm mics set up at the soundboard tent and mixed with a fine board feed. The Neumann LD’s are especially warm and wide in the outdoor setting and the mix is quite well balanced resulting in a superb recording. Enjoy!
