nyctaper Top Ten Concerts of 2013 + Live Mix Tape

Another banner year at the site and seeing shows in NYC (and sometimes beyond). This “best of” only encompasses the shows that I, nyctaper, saw. Remember that the site has had nine contributing tapers this year, and I did not even record and post the most shows — that honor goes to the indefagitable acidjack, who we hope will come along soon with his own list.

I’ve also attached an mp3 compilation to this post. Its mostly of a mix of “honorable mentions”, just really cool songs I recall from this year, some new songs, some older songs, but all performed and recorded in 2013. Enjoy!

nyctaper Top 10 Concerts of 2013:

1. Wilco – June 21, 2013 Solid Sound Festival North Adams MA
PSquared and I drove a long way in a short time to see this show, and then drove all the way back almost as soon as it was over. And it was infinitely worth it. Wilco playing an entire two and a half hour show of covers, some popular classics and some fairly obscure, but all in their own style and all requested by fans. This one-off is very unlikely to happen again and we’re so fortunate to not only have been there to but have captured an “event” of this kind. Our recording got us mentioned in Spin Magazine, Paste Magazine, Fuse TV, WXRT radio, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, The Examiner, Prefix Magazine, Gothamist, and a hundred other smaller sites. 20,000 people have downloaded this recording from our site. There are 24,000 plays on the “Marquee Moon” soundcloud sample (posted below). Its my own personal highlight of the year, and one of the best moments in the history of the site.

2. Yo La Tengo – December 16, 2013 Bell House Brooklyn
Sure, they appeared on the site six times this year, including the final four shows of the year at Bell House and of course the historical final YLT show at Maxwell’s (RIP) in June. But I believe this show was the most fully formed, most inspirationally played, and including some absolute classic selections. I’ve seen this band live about fifty times, and this may be the most completely realized performance of all of them.

3. Thee Oh Sees – October 27, 2013 285 Kent
In a cruel bit of synchronous irony, on the same day this month that word spread that the venue 285 Kent would soon close, Thee Oh Sees announced an “indefinite hiatus”. It was only about six weeks previous that this band played this venue on the day that Lou Reed died and it was a moment in time that anyone in attendance will not soon forget. One of the best live bands around played with an enormous amount of energy and inspiration and the packed crowd responded with equal energy.

4. Deervana (Deer Tick) – September 13, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl
This is another show selected because of its historical signifance. If perhaps the performance wasn’t technically perfect, the spirit and energy that Deer Tick brings to its “Deervana” performances is clear. On the 20th anniversary of the release of In Utero, the album was played from start to finish. It was a celebration, not some mournful exercise, and the love of the music was obvious from both the band and the crowd. In terms of the importance to the site, this recording also saw us get mentioned all over the web, including Spin, Consequence of Sound, The Examiner, MTV, Stereogum and a bunch of other places.

5. Superchunk – September 28, 2013 Bowery Ballroom NYC
They are indie vets both as a band and as a label, but Superchunk continues to produce excellent material. And this year’s new album I Hate Music was one of their best. This show at Bowery, the first of two sold-out shows in NYC was like most Superchunk shows a kinetic and crazy run through material old and new and their was a celebratory and special air in the room. Perhaps the most fun show we saw all year.

6. The Complete Last Waltz – November 27, 2013 Capitol Theatre, Portchester NY
The original Last Waltz was perhaps the greatest concert in the history of rock music, so a complete performance nearly forty years later would have to be a pale comparison, right? Only it wasn’t. We were absolutely stunned at the quality of the performances and the reverence with which the entire ensemble treated the material.

7. Deafheaven – February 22, 2013 Saint Vitus Brooklyn
Yes, I realize that Deafheaven has appeared on virtually every best of 2013 list compiled on the web in the last month or so, but this is different (aren’t we always), this is a concert that we recorded early in the year before their game-changing album Sunbather had even been released. We saw them again in July, which was also a phenomenal show but we’re sticking with the first experience of this “take your breath away” band who are destined for bigger places than the great Saint Vitus in 2014. But we were there then. As it ever was.

8. Kevin Devine – November 22, 2013 Webster Hall NYC
He released two of the best records of the year, and unless you read Paste Magazine every day or saw our post about Kevin in November, you wouldn’t even know it. He is perhaps the best current purveyor of power pop and his prolific songwriting ability is a thing to behold. This concert was the home show after a lengthy US tour and Kevin and band were in a fine form from start to finish.

9. Ty Segall – August 30, 2013 Bowery Ballroom NYC
Ty Segall released a true departure album this year, the somewhat-quiet and contemplative Sleeper. This Bowery show was a seated affair, with the new album performed almost entirely to start the show. Ty is a performer of great proficiency and this show highlighted his maturity and versatility.

10. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – January 26, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl
Easily the best single performance of Grateful Dead material since the demise of the original band nearly twenty years ago. My review was pretty harsh regarding “post-Jerry” projects and that generated a bit of a comment war, but thankfully most people agreed with me — and nearly everyone agreed that this show was immense.

Its by no means a comprehensive list of musical highlights, but consists of tracks that caught our ear this year. The final night of these long runs of shows by Yo La Tengo are always the most bittersweet nights. Throughout the week of the shows, we fall into a kind of change of lifestyle during these periods — get through the work day, get to the venue, and then inside the little cocoon of the show. Its a bit of a fantasy world, and by the time of the last show we’re tired, happy for the experiences and perhaps a little nostalgic for what’s soon to end. The band generally saves some special treats for the closer and on the fourth and final night of the Bell House it was no different. From our perch adjacent to the VIP area, we could see that the Kaplan and Hubley extended families were out in full and this added a bit of “old home” to the performance. We felt that the more personal lyrics were especially heartfelt — “Our Way To Fall” and “The Point of It” were particularly solid versions of those songs. But for those of us who’d weathered the snow and the travel and put off whatever we had going on in our lives for four consecutive nights, Ira dedicated the infrequently-performed older number “Satellite”. The song had been requested earlier in the week by one of those every-show guys (our friend from the “Laz Archives“) and we were happy to see him get mention from stage. We’re streaming that song below. For the electric set, once again the band held back nothing and marched full energy through ninety minutes of noisy goodness. This show the set closer was “Blue Line Swinger”, which at fourteen minutes was not the longest version we’ve seen but it was certainly one of the tightest. My own personal highlight of the evening and of perhaps the entire run of shows came as the encore set began — a raging cover of Neil Young’s “Time Fades Away” which featured the shared riffs of Antietam’s Tara Key on guitar. And as she has often, Marilyn Kaplan closed the set and the week with her annual appearance with her son’s band to sing “My Little Corner of the World”. While the Bell House isn’t Maxwell’s, the venue certainly offers a number of charms that we hope make it become the “corner of the world” that hosts future Yo La Tengo shows, perhaps even next year’s Hanukkah celebration. We shall see.

Yo La Tengo: December 14, 2013 Bell House – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Yo La Tengo has never been shy inviting guests of all sorts to play live with them. Just peruse the pages of this site for audio evidence of the frequency and often mindbending success of those collaborations. For Saturday night’s show, the second of the Bell House run, they welcomed perhaps the most eclectic guest we’ve ever seen, a woman whose name we only heard as “Yen” playing a stringed Chinese instrument called the guzheng. Wikipedia tells us that the guzheng usually has 21 strings and movable bridges and it dates back about 2500 years. Although in recent years, the instrument has found its way into some rare rock and jazz compositions, the closest I’ve ever seen to this type of collaboration was during Bjork’s 2007 tour when Min Xiao Fen guested for one song on the Chinese stringed instrument the Pipa for all of the NYC dates. But that was one song. The Yo La Tengo guest played on the majority of the first (acoustic) set, and with one minor quibble, the instrument added a unique subtle depth to all of the tracks upon which is was featured. Perhaps my favorite song that featured the collaboration was “Paddle Forward”, where the rhythmic sound of the guzheng strings paralleled and enhanced the water imagery of the lyrics. The only song where perhaps the addition didn’t quite work was on “Green Arrow” where Ira’s slide guitar solos sounded too close in tone to the guzheng, and the climaxes sounded a bit cluttered. But all in all, this guest appearance was one of the more memorable and unique and was quite the success. For the electric set we were back to the trio and as with all the second sets this week, it raged from start to finish. This night’s closing song was a twenty-minute working of “Tango” that touched on all aspects of the band’s sound — quiet melody, rich harmonic instrumentation, thrash, unpredictable solos and a crescendo for the ages. The encores featured three covers and were icing on the cake of another amazing YLT experience.

I recorded this show with the Neumann Hypercards mounted on the rail in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed by veteran YLT FOH Mark Luecke. The sound quality is superb, enjoy!

The Complete Last Waltz: November 27, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It took place on Thanksgiving night 1976, and it is perhaps the greatest rock and roll concert ever — certainly in the top ten. As a concert, The Band’s The Last Waltz featured one of the premiere acts in the history of rock music retiring from touring in their prime and playing their greatest material accompanied by a who’s-who of guests. This isn’t just a few cameos from some big names — these are all-time performances from the greatest of the great. Dylan, Clapton, Neil, Van, Joni, and many others including everyone from Neil Diamond to Muddy Waters. The movie was directed by Scorcese is also perhaps the best concert film ever recorded. As a tribute to this remarkable and historical event in music history, The Complete Last Waltz is a project of tremendous ambition and respect for the history of the event. Last year the project was performed in San Francisco, but this year it moved East to the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Thanksgiving Eve. The house band presented a bookend of sorts for this year for me personally, as the musicians were in large part the same group that had performed so admirably for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Brooklyn Bowl in January. On this night, the band lead was taken by Sam Cohen and he did an extraordinary job both performing the songs to which he was assigned and passing the spotlight to the queue of outstanding guests. For this four-hour event it would be unwise to summarize every highlight, as there were plenty. I’ve chosen to stream four tracks from this event, which were personal favorites. Eric D. Johnson of the Fruit Bats (RIP) performed Van Morrison’s “Caravan” with Van’s 70s energy and his clothing outfit, including the bell bottom jeans. Eric Earley, from nyctaper-faves Blitzen Trapper, performed the entire Dylan suite impeccably with “I Don’t Believe You” echoing the career highlight of the Dylan & The Band collaboration, the 1966 tour. Another site favorite Cass McCombs played three Band songs, of which we thought he completely nailed “Stage Fright”. Finally, Kenny Siegel of whom we were not previously familiar summoned the ghost of Richard Manuel for a perfect rendition of “The Shape I’m In”. But those four songs are just a sample of the amazing music made that night. I recorded this set with the four-mic rig from the unfortunate official taping location in this venue, which is situated behind the soundboard and about 30 feet back from the balcony overhang. The other unfortunate circumstance at this show was the outrageous persistent yapping from much of the crowd — I mean people just would not stop talking. This despite a very nicely worded request on page two of the official Program asking people to refrain from talking or move the lobby. With those two very big caveats, please enjoy this recording!

Thee Oh Sees: October 29, 2013 Irving Plaza – Flac/MP3/Streaming [TWO Sources]

Just two days removed from the amazing for-the-ages Thee Oh Sees show at 285 Kent on Sunday, one would expect a let-down of sorts for the band’s Tuesday show at Irving Plaza. But Thee Oh Sees are not a band short on energy or seemingly in need of any particular motivation to deliver a crowd-pleasing garage-rock show. On Tuesday, the band worked through some technical problems throughout much of the show but continually rose above the issues to deliver song after song of high energy numbers. The venue was prepared in advance for the crowd and had installed a metal grating in front of the stage — the floor was completely maniacal, the band played off the crowd’s response. While 285 was the show of this tour, there were transcendent moments at Irving that reached the same peaks. We are streaming two of those highlights, “Tidal Wave” was three minutes of pure punk goodness, and “Dead Energy” was ten minutes of extended psychedelic jamming that rivaled any live band around these days. Thee Oh Sees have become one of today’s must-see live bands, and these two nights confirmed that we must not miss them whenever they’re in town.

We recorded this set from a 12-foot stand in the middle of the floor. Both set of mics were mounted on the same stand inches away from each other. nyctaper used the Neumann TLM-102 large diaphragm cardioids and acidjack utilized Schoeps Cards. We believe the sound is representative of that in the venue that night, which had some issues. Overall, both sources offer slightly different takes on the same show and both are excellent. Enjoy!

Minks: August 31, 2013 Captured Tracks CT5 Festival – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In their brief history, Minks has been the quintessential Captured Tracks band. Their debut album By The Hedge was shrouded in mystery — not much was known about the artist and the lyrics were often hidden in deep reverb. Minks also didn’t play many shows. And of course the sound was heavily influenced by the early to mid-80s Brit post-punk. This year Minks has returned with their second album and the band has most certainly evolved. Tides End is a significantly warmer album than the band’s debut, and Minks have taken a higher profile in support for the album. Band leader Sonny Kilfoyle has even done a series of interviews. At the CT5 Fest in August, Minks set was certainly upbeat, as Kilfoyle bantered good naturedly between tracks and the band worked through an excellent set of material from both albums. We’re streaming “Doomed and Cool” which certainly captures a definable New Order influence to the band’s sound and was one of the tightest tracks performed. Minks will play NYC again at Mercury Lounge on November 21.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the two previous sets from this Fest and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We saw what I believe was Blouse’s first NYC show almost two years ago at 285 Kent. The band had recently signed with Captured Tracks and released their self-titled debut album. That album and show were impressive and we expected that Blouse would continue to produce solid music. This month the band returns with their follow-up album and the early returns are all positive. While the debut was very faithful to a mid-80s synth-Brit-pop sound, the new album Imperium stretched out and displays more of the band’s guitar talents. At the center is Charlie Hilton whose vocals and guitar set the tone for the band’s sound. At the Captured Tracks fest last week, Blouse played a 40-minute set with songs mixed between the two albums. Two years since we last saw them, the band has matured and seems tighter and more confident than their debut show. The Imperium material was solid and consistent and we expect that when the album is released next week it will further propel this excellent band forward.

I recorded this show in the same manner as the Mac Demarco set and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

If he is perhaps the least Captured Tracks-sounding band on the label, Mac DeMarco is certainly one of its most entertaining acts. On the first day of the Captured Tracks Festival (“CT5“) to celebrate the five years that this excellent label has released albums, one of its most successful artists delivered the performance of the day. Mac is certainly talented — his songs are tight and well written and his band is proficient. But the material is enhanced by the performer’s personality, his sense of humor, and his willingness to take chances. As when we saw Mac at Webster in February, one of the highlights of any Mac DeMarco set is when the band lets loose and runs through a semi-tongue in cheek set of classic rock covers. On this night, the improv section did not disappoint and gave us a few belly laughs along the way.

I recorded this set with the Neumann large diaphragm cards mounted high in front of the soundboard cage and mixed with a feed from the board. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Lee Ranaldo: July 30, 2013 Maxwell’s – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Since the apparent demise of his longtime band, Lee Ranaldo has been hard at work forging ahead with his solo career. Although last year’s Matador release Between the Times and the Tides certainly was not a “debut” album for Lee, it represented his first post Sonic Youth work and was a very strong “start”. We were present for two early gigs in support of the album, months before its release and while the band was certainly strong, there was perhaps a bit of trepidation about the new format. A year later, in the same venue as one of those early shows (Maxwells), Lee and the band (now called The Dust) were anything but shy — this is a powerful confident quartet performing material that has been fully developed live. As this night was the final regularly scheduled gig in the history of Maxwell’s, there was a weird kind of celebratory doom energy in the room which Lee likened to an “Irish wake”. After the gig opened with a wedding proposal from one former Maxwell’s employee to another, the band seemed to play off the weird energy and played with a sense of urgency and purpose. Lee and the Dust basically played their entire current catalog in a show that approached two hours. The setlist included the entire Time and Tides album, four new songs, one of Lee’s Sonic Youth tracks, and a handful of eclectic and excellent covers. At the conclusion of this night, I broke down my equipment, said thanks to the people involved in the venue, and walked out of Maxwell’s for the last time. The sadness of that exit overshadowed what I realize now — that Lee Ranaldo had closed Maxwell’s for me with one of the best shows we’ve seen all year.

I recorded this show in the way we’ve done for the many years we recorded at this venue and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Mission Of Burma: July 28, 2013 Maxwells (Late Show) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Other than the Feelies, Mission is Burma is likely the only still-active band to have played Maxwell’s in the 1970s. The club closed for good last night, but in its final week we were treated to a series of outstanding concerts, not the least of which was the double shot of MOB for early and late shows on Sunday. Acidjack covered the early show, and I was there for the late. If on this night the band’s setlist was more geared towards older material than their recent shows (January at Bowery for instance), it was a fitting acknowledgement to a club that was, according to Clint Conley, a “safe place for weirdos” in the old days. Thirty-five years and thousands of shows later, on this night it was a place for memories and tributes, but more importantly still-vibrant music played by a band that virtually invented American post-punk.

I recorded this set with the Neumann large diaphragm cardioids mounted at the front of the soundboard booth and the quality is excellent. Enjoy!
