Acid Mothers Temple: April 6, 2016 Knitting Factory

Each Acid Mothers Temple performance is special in some way, but this year’s New York jaunt was notable for the arrival of a greater-than-usual number of new songs. In the case of this Knitting Factory show, after a wild “Dark Star Blues in the Dazzling Sky” came the first of those new jams, “Wizard,” a psycho-blues number whose harmonica intro hurtles into a spasm of guitars.

In fact, a majority of this set was built around new material, though of course the usual standouts “Pink Lady Lemonade” and “Cometary Orbital Drive” also made an appearance. If you checked out our recording of the Mercury Lounge show from the day before this one, you were turned on to “Another Nanique Dimension” and “Blue Velvet Blues” as well as the aforementioned “Wizard,” but this show closed on an even more usual note, with a new, chant-driven number that has not made an appearance (at least in recorded fashion) at any other time so far on this tour. The song highlighted the value of the two female vocalists who joined them on this tour, providing a distinctly Eastern, spiritual slant to the end of the show. The band will wrap up this U.S./Canada jaunt on April 18th in Los Angeles, but we can guarantee they’ll be back next year.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with a combination of Neumann KM150 hypercardiod mics and Schoeps MK4V cardiod mics, combined with a soundboard feed from house engineer Rob. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Heaters: September 26, 2015 Alphaville

Considering that Heaters are from Grand Rapids, Michigan, it’s notable how well they conjure a California garage, a Pacific coast parking lot, the beach (and no, I don’t mean Saugatuck, Michigan folks). Schooled in the ways of garage-psych contemporaries like Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and others, the Midwesterners bring their own vibe to the genre, packing a lot into the time of their new record, Holy Water Pool, released by the Brooklyn label Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, a mark of quality among bands of their kind. This was that album’s record release show, at the not-DIY Bushwick venue Alphaville, and Heaters’ tight 39-minute set made as strong an argument for them as a live band as for their record. We heard several of the new songs, including the standout “Detonator Eyes.” You can catch Heaters tonight at their CMJ show at Berlin, on Avenue A. Trust us, you want to do that.

I recorded this set with Audio Technica 4051 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Theo Klein. The sound quality is quite good for the relatively modest sound system being used. Enjoy!

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard: September 12, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

With the beer flowing, bodies flying, phone cameras silently snapping, and the floor jammed, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard showed everybody at the Pour House how to properly end a festival. The band pulled out all the stops for this set, cloaking themselves in liquid colors as they jammed through a bunch of their latest album, I’m In Your Mind Fuzz, as well as two new songs and one “very old” one — “Cut Throat Boogie,” from their first album, which didn’t make it far out of Australia. As had been the case most of the night at the Pour House, there was a line down the block, and the fans who actually made it inside were hungry to cut loose. The band seemed happy to oblige, cranking things up with the usual “I’m In Your Mind>I’m Not In Your Mind” sequence and not letting up for the full 70 minutes. The band has a new album, Paper Mache Dream Balloon, on the way next October from ATO Records, home to Alabama Shakes and others. Whether any of the new material we’ve been seeing on tour (such as at June’s Bowery and Baby’s All Right shows) will make it (the track list on the front cover might suggest no, if it’s real) is anyone’s guess, but it’s clear that this band remains on the path upward. This was another perfect, blurry end to a Hopscotch Music Festival to remember.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from King Gizzard’s engineer plus the veteran Pour House engineer Jack, together with Schoeps MK41V microphones. The capture is loud and clear, a perfect reflection of the night. Enjoy!

Moon Duo: September 11, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Moon Duo anchored a night of psychedelic and punk music in Raleigh’s Contemporary Art Museum on the second night of Hopscotch Music Festival. We caught up with the band earlier this year at Rough Trade, but weren’t able to catch this Hopscotch set. Luckily, our man “Rumbleseat” was in attendance, and captured this band in all its glory, against a fractal backdrop that felt right at home in the cavernous CAM. As with the Rough Trade set, Moon Duo moved around their catalog a bit, including material from their latest Sacred Bones release, Shadow of the Sun. We were especially happy to get to hear a live version of “Free Action,” which we didn’t get to see at their recent sets in New York. This performance no doubt set the mood for the heads who stuck around to see Roky Erickson do his thing to finish the night. Clearly, Moon Duo learned some lessons from him, and more.

Rumbleseat recorded this set with two sets of mics, Church Audio CA-11s on the ceiling and Shure SM-57s on stage, combined with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Föllakzoid: May 23, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Chilean band Föllakzoid have a habit of latching you into their deep grooves and not letting up, each song building like a little universe around monotones to create pieces that fall squarely in the post-Krautrock camp. The artist Uwe Schmidt, better known as Atom TM, joined the band for their brand new record, III, and the electronic influence was evident at this show, as the band created trancelike numbers that lent themselves as much to dancing as to chilling out. There are hints of U.S.-based compatriots like Moon Duo here, but this music comes across are more beat-focused and less “rock.”

This show at Rough Trade marked a relatively rare return by the band to the U.S., and that was emphasized by the long line to get in the door. Some were no doubt there early to see Jim Jarmusch and Jozef van Wissem’s Squrl take the stage first, but the crowd only filled in further by the time Föllakzoid took the stage. From single, flickering beats, “Electric” grew into the roiling kickoff track from III that we’ve all come to love, followed by that album’s centerpiece, “Piure.” By the time those two songs ended, the show was already thirty-two minutes in. Those hoping for standard “psychedelic” fare might have wondered what they had walked into at that point; fortunately, the people here got it, and started dancing. From there, they turned back to their excellent previous effort, II, for the last four songs — “99,” “9,” “Trees,” and “Rivers.” The set’s intensity peaked at “Trees,” which felt like the biggest rock number of the bunch, making “Rivers” and its slightly more subdued pace the right way to go out. We hope these guys will be back soon.

Moon Duo: March 10, 2015 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada have been making music as Moon Duo for a while now, churning out consistent albums on Sacred Bones (and earlier, Woodsist) that have delighted both Wooden Shjips fans and those who were drawn to the more organ-driven sound led by Yamada. With Shadow of the Sun, and this latest tour, the band has swung a bit more to the rock side of the things, bringing on drummer John Jeffrey, who appeared on the Live in Ravenna album as well. If Shadow represents yet another refinement rather than a quantum leap, the addition of the live drumming is noticeable, and even more so in the actual concert space — compare this set, for example, with the set I recorded in 2010.

Fans of the Ravenna live set would agree that this set at Rough Trade NYC built on some of the good things you can see there, with the live drums adding viscosity and punch to the band’s hypnotic flow. The set consisted of just under half-Shadow of the Sun material. “Wilding” made for as good a kickoff for the live set as it did for the album, while “Thieves” gave Ripley an opportunity for a hardcore guitar freakout. The trio were barely visible most of the time, shrouded by an electric light show that matched the pace and vibe of the setlist. The seventy minutes ended on a high note, with an extended “Set It On Fire” that, by the time it ended, made you feel almost as if you’d woken from a dream. This band can do that to you.

Acid Mothers Temple: April 23, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

Acid Mothers Temple have achieved the cult status they have for good reason — their shows are always deliciously familiar, yet never the same twice. You always know you’ll hear some version of “Pink Lady Lemonade”, however it may be broken up into parts. That familiar riff always feels like an anchor in the midst of a set that’s usually a deep, spiritual, psychedelic dive, where you’re never sure the band is entirely aware of where they’re going to take you before they do. The Acid Mothers kicked off their latest U.S. tour at Mercury Lounge, a familiar haunt packed to the gills with everyone from longtime devotees tripping balls to dumbstruck yuppies wondering what they had wandered into. Their latest record, In Search of Lost Divine Ark, adds another notch of sonic triumph to their belt, and the title track from the record closed out this set in exactly the way you’d hope.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by longtime Mercury engineer Kevin Mazzarelli, together with Schoeps MK41 microphones. The recording emphasizes the board feed to cut out the chatter of the annoying couple chatting under my mics, who are pretty much invisible in the recording. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Axxa / Abraxas: March 21, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Axxa / Abraxas, like many of their Captured Tracks forebears, began in a bedroom. In this case, the bedroom of Atlanta native Ben Asbury, who drew influences near his hometown as well as his current home to create his self-titled debut. That record, produced by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, owes Taveniere’s main project an obvious debt, from the jangly guitars to a Jeremy Earl-style high falsetto vocal on some songs. What’s missed there, but more evident live, is the free-flowing style of the Elephant 6 collective from nearby Athens, Georgia, whose members are as legendary for their live shows as for their far-out styles. Bringing out these tunes live at Baby’s All Right must’ve been no easy task for Asbury and his bandmates, as the record’s slick production style doesn’t necessarily tell all of the band’s story. What you find out in the live setting is that the core of this music is Asbury’s skill at the axe; at age 23, he’s dropping some serious solos. Axxa / Abraxas feels more like a Brooklyn band at the start of their career than the polished crew you hear on the LP, and in many ways, that’s a good thing. One of this band’s greatest assets is youthful exuberance, and you could feel that in the room in a way you can’t on an album. You get the sense that, with more time with this material under their belt, it’ll only get better. Asbury’s best days are yet to come, and it’s going to be a great ride.

I recorded this set with the digital multitrack system at Baby’s All Right, set up by engineer David Lefcourt, together with an onstage pair of Naiant X-X omnidirectional microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

MV & EE: February 24, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Night two of MV & EE‘s Monday residencies at Baby’s All Right delivered on the same or an even higher level than the first. No longer stuck with a Monday of a holiday weekend for a time slot, the duo of Erika Elder and Matt Valentine played these two sets to a well-packed house. Set one found the pair getting things on track, with them sharing their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color” again, among other gems. But it was set two that really found the Vermont-based pair firing on all cylinders, playing perhaps the most concise yet diverse song cycle of the four that they shared during these New York performances. After a perfectly-timed “Tea Devil”, Valentine picked up the sitar to jam profusely on “Environments” which flowed into “Space Drums” — an audacious move considering MV & EE weren’t even playing with a drummer. They ended the night on “Lead Me To Vibration” from their latest LP, Shade Grown, leaving us with positive vibes we hope will carry over to their next visit.

As with the previous MV & EE recording from this year, this recording was made with a full multitrack digital fileset generously provided by house engineer Devin Foley, together with my Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

MV & EE are one of those acts that’s so prolific, and whose output is so varied, one would be a fool to try and summarize it all. Cosmic voyagers Matt Valentine and Erika Elder began their journey more than a decade ago, combining Indian raga style with deep psych and damaged Appalachian folk into something wholly new and often unexpected. The duo has a mini-residency going this month at Baby’s All Right, a relatively new Williamsburg venue and restaurant that’s as good-looking as it is inviting. Elder and Valentine served up two sets’ worth of material that covered a range of their career, including songs from their latest, Shade Grown. Building gradually, the first set began with the early slow-burner “Beautiful Mountain”, then “Tea Devil” from the band’s Three Lobed release Country Stash, and “Leaves” from their Woodsist LP Space Homestead, ending with the countrified twang of “Shotgun Willie”. Set two found Valentine and Elder kicking off with “Shit’s Creek” (also from Space Homestead) before taking things into the deep jam zone, as an extra-heady “Too Far To See”,  flowed into an extended jam before landing on a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color”, jamming into the beat-backed “Cocola Parabola”. This show whetted our appetite for the band’s next appearance at the venue this coming Monday, which is a free show. If you haven’t had a chance to check out MV & EE, not to mention Williamsburg’s finest new venue, this is your chance.
