It only took one listen to Ought‘s debut album, More Than Any Other Day to understand that they are a young band of uncommon musical ambition and scope. They play a brand of rhythmically complex art-punk that incorporates elements of the “math rock” sound that rose to prominence in the 1990s, while still maintaining a great ability to make melodies you might hum. Formed in Montreal during a period of civil unrest by a group of young men mostly from somewhere else, their songs brim with disaffection as well as hope, a sort of post-OWS sensation that no matter how difficult things may seem, a way forward still exists. The album title, then, says a lot about where they are philosophically.

As a live band, Ought more than do their recorded output justice. They took the stage at Bowery Ballroom in a relatively quiet pre-CMJ week and stormed through most of their album plus a new song. The whole band has significant musical chops; drummer Tim Keen deserves a lot of the credit for keeping things tight, just as Tim Keeler’s sneering vocals give a memorable voice to the band’s vision. Listening to the eight songs live, some of which got the extended treatment (especially “Forgiveness”) it was striking how single-worthy almost every one of these tracks was, as well as how distinct each song was from the other. Pitchfork’s very positive review rightly pointed out that Ought’s more immediate style made them an odd bedfellow with the roster they share with Godspeed You Black Emperor and Colin Stetson, but I think Constellation Records knows what they’re up to. If the label’s goal is to cull the very best of the band’s adopted city, putting ambition at the forefront of any particular genre, then Ought fit right in. These guys are going places. And if you want to watch them do it, catch some of their upcoming tour dates, including Washington, DC tonight and Purchase, NY tomorrow.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Marah: July 26, 2014 XPonential Music Festival, Marina Stage (Camden, NJ) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Marah‘s latest album, Mountain Minstrelsy of Pennsylvania, represents an audacious turn for the Philadelphia-based roots rock band, as the band decided to bring folk songs discovered in the 1930s screaming into the 21st century more or less intact (you can read more in our post from last month, here). For a band willing to do that, I guess having a ten-year-old join the band as a permanent member — on fiddle as well as guitar no less — seemed like an achievable feat.

If part of this audience at the XPonential Music Festival, presented by WXPN, came to take in the novelty of watching young Gus Tritsch take the stage, they stayed because he and the band were setting the entire outdoor Marina Stage on fire. In addition to rockified versions of the Mountain Minstrelsy songs, the band served up classics from their catalog like 2000’s “The Catfisherman” and the acoustic “City of Dreams”, about vocalist David Bielanko’s hometown of Philadelphia. As with the Bowery Electric show, we got to experience some of the band’s fiercest jamming on the hard-charging version of “Rattlesnake” transformed a great deal from the short-but-sweet album version into an epic sendoff.

I recorded this set with a flawless soundboard feed from the local engineer Tom, combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones flying back at the board. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dave Hause is the quintessential hometown hero. A veteran punk and hardcore player, most famously with The Loved Ones, which he co-founded, Hause has aged gracefully into a thrilling second act as a grown-up-but-still-rocking songwriter, whose punk-tinged blue collar anthems were the perfect way to end the day on the Marina Stage at the XPonential Music Festival in Camden, NJ, presented by WXPN. Hause had more friends in the audience than just about anyone at the festival, and he rewarded us with outstanding renditions of his latest work, focused especially on his 2013 record Devour.

To experience Hause live is to take a trip down Thunder Road, to revel in cathartic major-chord rock. The passion in Hause’s voice is matched by his incisive lyrics, such as those on “The Great Depression”, an anthem for the victims of modern economic collapse. Part of what makes Hause’s approach so appealing is that, even when the story being told is a sad one, the exuberance of Hause’s delivery claims the listener’s interest and holds it. Hause closed the set with “The Shine”, where he sings:

Cause we don’t stutter when we sing
Our melodies grow little wings
Huddled here grinding tears into red wine
Meet the darkness with the shine

No matter how you felt when you arrived that day, Hause left you feeling right. His are the perfect words to be sung by a Philly musician on the banks of Camden, a Mid-Atlantic town verging on despair, but grasping, as ever, for hope.

Jeremy Messersmith is one of those consummate singer-songwriters who keeps fans engaged with a combination of hard work and compelling music. Though he first broke out in 2006, appearing on this site in 2008 as he toured behind the outstanding The Silver City, to hear Messersmith play again two albums later is to fall in love with his music all over again. It retains its easygoing spirit, with lyrics that are poignant but not labored and hooks that dig in and don’t let go. This appearance at the XPonential Music Festival on the Camden waterfront, put on by the stalwart independent Philadelphia radio station WXPN, brought us a more mature but still playful Messersmith who looked comfortable playing to a sizable outdoor crowd. The set focused on his new record of fractured love songs, Heart Murmurs, but didn’t shy from some of his best-known rockers from earlier albums, like the propulsive “Dillinger Eyes” and set closer “Violet!” from 2010’s The Reluctant Graveyard. Even if Messersmith did sing a song about wanting to be a one-night stand, I suspect fans’ commitment to him will continue to run much deeper than that.

Oneida: July 17, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

With Oneida, you never have to worry about seeing the same show twice. Even if you’re hearing the same song — for example, the mammoth version of “Cedars” from this night’s show at Glasslands compared to the one we documented at the start of the year at the Knitting Factory — you won’t necessarily know it if you don’t pay close attention. As our review of the Knitting Factory show pointed out, at this point, referring to an Oneida show’s “setlist” is kind of missing the point. This band has long-since abandoned the conventional, which is why they continue to be a major draw in the underground scene in New York seventeen years in despite minimal blog hype and virtually no mainstream exposure. An Oneida show is an event, a celebration of what music can be when all of the downward pressures on creativity are cut.

Joining the band for this show, as he did at Glasslands last year, was James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Dump, whose bass playing mingled nicely with the swirling controlled chaos on the stage. Although technically a four-song “set”, this set had a similar structure, with a 40-minute sequence of “Cedars” into “Economy Travel” adding two shorter songs, “Cock Fight” and “You Get Brighter” (a 48-minute version of which appeared at the 2013 Glasslands show) to round it out. We expect to see some of these compositions whittled down to album length for a future release, but in a way that’d be a shame. This act’s sound cannot be contained on a few pieces of plastic, nor can their songs properly be culled to one right “version”. The beauty is in the expression of it at a given time on a given night–the very reason live recordings exist in the first place.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and Schoeps MK8 capsule in the “mid-side” configuration on-stage to allow maximum adjustment capability to the stereo image, combined with a soundboard feed from Glasslands head of production Josh Thiel. The sound quality is quite simply phenomenal — one of the best recordings I think I can take credit for. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: May 20, 2014 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

There was a period in this site’s history during the 2009-2010 range where we collectively saw Built to Spill more than ten times in a short span (four shows in October 2009 alone). Most bands seen that often that close together would burn you out for good, but we have continued to follow Doug Martsch and his outstanding band since then. The reason Martsch feels he can continue playing New York with such frequency — even when he doesn’t have new material on offer — is that the show doesn’t just go on, its gets better every time. This performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg was easily the best BTS performance I have seen in all of the many times I have experienced this band.

Without the burden of promoting a new album, Martsch felt free to let he and the band’s whimsies roam, playing classic BTS songs like “Stab” from There’s Nothing Wrong With Love alongside newer favorites like “Planting Seeds”. We got songs that were great, short bursts; we also got a nearly ten-minute “Goin’ Against Your Mind” straight into “Carry the Zero” to close out the main set. But what set this show apart were its four cover songs. If you haven’t heard Martsch do his best J. Mascis impersonation, now you can, on this epic cover of Dinosaur Jr.‘s “Sludgefeast”. Or if classic rock is more your thing, you couldn’t go wrong with this phenomenal note-for-note rendition of Blue Öyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, or BTS’ take on The Byrds’ “Eight Miles High”. The night ended, as did the Brooklyn Bowl show, with the craziest cover of all — a seventeen-minute free-for-all to the tune of “Genius of Love” by Tom Tom Club, which found the audience joining the band on stage for an epic, old-style Brooklyn dance party. It was the kind of thing a band with two fewer decades’ experience might have done, a lark to put a punctuation mark on the night. But that’s the genius of Built to Spill — whether the songs are new or old, the show never stays the same.

I recorded this set along with Johnny Fried Chicken Boy from our usual spot in the balcony directly over the soundboard cage, using Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones. With some careful editing to mitigate the boomy nature of the house mix, this recording is excellent. Enjoy!

Gretchen Lohse: February 26, 2014 Trans Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The first time I heard Gretchen Lohse‘s music I was literally left breathless. Her new album Primal Rumble is a minimalist folk record that highlights her beautiful voice and honest lyrics with no pretense or affectation. We invited Gretchen to perform at Trans Pecos based solely on hearing the record — its that good. And to our delight, she accepted and rounded out a terrific bill of powerful female performers. As expected, Gretchen’s set was short on any kind of bells and whistles and long on talent and emotion. We expect that she will reach wider audiences in the not too distant future, but for her first ever solo show in NYC, we can say we were there back then.

acidjack recorded this set in the same manner as the Larkin Grimm recording, with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the ORTF wide-angle configuration at the stage lip, and a soundboard feed. Other than some volume adjustments that are evident during “Twisted Apples”, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Dean Wareham: April 5, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Dean Wareham has created music for more than 25 years, but he’s always been part of a group — be it Galaxie 500, Luna or Dean & Britta. In the last year, Dean has released an excellent EP and his first true solo album, and the current tour in support of the March release of his self-titled album came to Bowery Ballroom last week. Bowery is a venue that holds a special place in the history of Luna, having hosted the band’s final shows (we recorded a recent one-off reunion) that became the Tell Me Do You Miss Me documentary. Dean’s set was a democratic run through a selection of material from throughout his career and included only four songs from the new album and just the title track from the EP. But the crowd was as we’d hope for this performer — reverent and respectful during the music and properly enthusiastic in between. And they were rewarded, as Dean Wareham continues to produce outstanding music on par with his entire career output. Dean’s current tour is over, but he’ll be in Europe in May.

This show was recorded with precision by hiandlo, who utilized his Schoeps cards in conjunction with a well-balanced board feed to create a truly superb recording. Enjoy!

The nice thing about raw talent is that it never really goes away. Larkin Grimm has a powerful and soulful voice that is so striking in its beauty. It is the keystone of her remarkable career. But Larkin last played shows regularly around the release of her last album in early 2012 — we recorded the CD release show. In the last two years, she’s been home raising her son and living a family life. But with a batch of new songs, it was time for Larkin Grimm to return to live performance and we were so happy that one of her first shows back was our NYCTaper event at Trans Pecos a few weeks ago. From the very first note of her set it was clear that she was happy to be back, and we were happy to see her. The voice was as strong as ever and it was perhaps the most relaxed and satisfying set we have ever seen Larkin play. She assembled an outstanding band and worked through a forty minute set with a couple of new songs, some old favorites and one traditional number. Larkin Grimm will next play at the Martin Bisi CD release show at Glasslands on April 15.

My thoughts on The War on Drugs don’t differ much from those expressed in nyctaper’s review of the previous night, but I do think some things bear repeating. Nine times out of ten — more like 95 times out of 100 — worthy bands who toil in the trenches don’t make it. One thing doesn’t go right or another. Maybe there’s a lack of commitment on someone’s part. Or a lack of confidence. Or, in most cases, a lack of pure dumb luck.

We’ve posted a lot of recordings of this band over the past few years not because we thought one day they’d be able to way-sell-out three nights in a row here in New York, which they just did, but because we believed they were worthy. As a fan, your biggest hope always ought to be that the band you’re rooting for makes it. For Adam Granduciel, who toiled for over a year creating his magnum opus Lost In the Dream, it didn’t yet seem to have sunk in that his band had. He showed a bit of nervousness before kicking off the opening number, “In Reverse”, but after that, this show unfolded like the victory party it was meant to be. Compared to night one at the Bowery Ballroom, the band was looser and more poised, playing one song after another as easily as “Suffering” transitioned straight into “An Ocean In Between the Waves”. Just as heavily-produced album tracks like “Under the Pressure” shone as rendered live, so too did re-arranged versions of the band’s classics like a slowed-down “Brothers”. With the bevy of personnel at his command, including a saxophonist, the band’s more complex numbers took on a Destroyer-like caste at times (we’ve recorded WoD opening for them). Granduciel makes that work, too, being the kind of musician who can add complexity without letting it turn to overindulgence.

Normally when you can hear a crowd screaming at the stage between songs it’s mindless heckling; if you listen closely to this recording, what’s being hurled at Granduciel are compliments on the album. This was that kind of show, right through Granduciel acknowledging the fakeness of encores, asking for the lights to go up some so he could read the lyrics to John Lennon’s “Mind Games” (streaming below) a bit more clearly. The War on Drugs may be critical darlings now, but this is isn’t overnight success. This is it being done the old fashioned way. The kind that lasts.

I recorded this set from my usual spot in the venue with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a stereo soundboard feed provided by house engineer Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding, marred only slightly by light static during two songs. Enjoy!
