MV & EE: February 24, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Night two of MV & EE‘s Monday residencies at Baby’s All Right delivered on the same or an even higher level than the first. No longer stuck with a Monday of a holiday weekend for a time slot, the duo of Erika Elder and Matt Valentine played these two sets to a well-packed house. Set one found the pair getting things on track, with them sharing their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color” again, among other gems. But it was set two that really found the Vermont-based pair firing on all cylinders, playing perhaps the most concise yet diverse song cycle of the four that they shared during these New York performances. After a perfectly-timed “Tea Devil”, Valentine picked up the sitar to jam profusely on “Environments” which flowed into “Space Drums” — an audacious move considering MV & EE weren’t even playing with a drummer. They ended the night on “Lead Me To Vibration” from their latest LP, Shade Grown, leaving us with positive vibes we hope will carry over to their next visit.

As with the previous MV & EE recording from this year, this recording was made with a full multitrack digital fileset generously provided by house engineer Devin Foley, together with my Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

If you had told me back in 1997, when bands like Mogwai first hit the scene in the U.S., that heavy instrumental post-rock would one day be a somewhat popular genre, I’m not sure I’d have believed you. Sure, some of the credit goes to TV and movie soundtracks, but mainly, this genre’s emergence is the results of relentless touring and high-quality output of its practitioners. Boston’s Caspian, part of what could be called the second wave of the scene, and masters of the style, are a great example. I first saw them deliver their relentless, dynamic show at the relatively tiny Studio at Webster Hall back in 2010. Now, an album and a couple EPs later, they can pack them in at Bowery Ballroom on a freezing Sunday night. For progressive music, progress.

Caspian practice the same soft-loud dynamic as many of their contemporaries, but what struck me about this show was how heavily this band emphasizes the loud part of that. The whole room shook with the sound of songs like the band’s classic “Moksha”, with its epic sweep, or “Ghosts of the Garden City” from the album Tertia. From the band’s latest EP, Hymn for the Greatest Generation, we got “Halls of the Summer”, a forward-looking track that shows the band is keeping up with current trends by incorporating subtle-yet-effective electronics.

This has been a hard year for the band, having lost bassist Chris Friedrich unexpectedly earlier in the year. The band’s attitude has been to celebrate Chris’ legacy by moving onward and forward with their music. This show, and the huge reception by the fans, shows that it’s working. We hope to see Caspian’s upward trajectory continue.

I recorded this set in the usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the house engineer Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Lawsuits: October 26, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Philly’s The Lawsuits are just straight up quality. This young act, who have established a reputation in their hometown that is growing around the East Coast, are one of those bands so ready for primetime that you can’t believe you’re seeing them in someone’s living room. Such are the advantages of living in New York City, I suppose.

This Backyard Brunch Session, like the Field Mouse set from later in the day, wasn’t exactly true to the format in terms of being (a) in a backyard or (b) acoustic, but The Lawsuits played this backup location the same way I’m sure they’d have played Bowery Ballroom. Dual lead vocalists Brian Dale Allen Strouse (also guitarist/keyboardist and lead songwriter) and Vanessa Winters give the band a wide palette to choose from vocally, and the core rhythm section of Brendan Cunningham on bass and Josh Friedman on drums (joined for this set by guitarist Joe Bisirri) give power and structure to the intricate arrangements. As a unit, the band’s highlight was probably “Love Is Weight”. With its hooky keyboard backing and catchy chorus, the song would be as at home in any of the last four decades, and it’s a home run now. The strongest individual performance could well have been Winters’ on the country-blues number “Long Drive Home”, where her vocals soared in the room without need of amplification. But it’s hard to be partial to any one performance out of this excellent set — even the impromptu, unrehearsed cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl” brought a huge smile to everyone’s face. If a choice of cover song could fully encapsulate the spirit, style and vibe of a band, the choice of that song by The Lawsuits might well be it. The band has shows in Philly on December 6 and New Year’s Eve, and should be touring New York again next year. Don’t miss them.

I recorded set with MBHO microphones on each of the lead vocalists with a mid-side pair of Schoeps MK5 and MK8 in the middle of the room. Of all of the site’s Backyard Brunch recordings, I believe this is the finest quality one yet. Enjoy!

Field Mouse: October 26, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Those familiar with the Brooklyn dream pop band Field Mouse and their intense, guitar-driven wall of sound might wonder how exactly they could play an un-amplified acoustic session in somebody’s backyard. Fortunately for those of us attending this Backyard Brunch Session, the only thing consistent about this installment in the series was the food.

A fully-amped combo of lead guitarist Andrew Futral and vocalist/guitarist Rachel Browne arrived at an apartment on Grand Street in Williamsburg with a guest drummer in tow and their full complement of amps. Other than the absence of bassist Saysha Heinzman, this was going to be an almost full-strength Field Mouse show. And thanks to a scheduling conflict, that wall of sound was going to be ricocheting off the walls of a medium-sized living room. Thankfully our hosts have cool neighbors, because this was not a quiet Saturday afternoon.

Since I first caught the band at Northside Festival last year, their confidence and songwriting have only gotten stronger. After releasing a series of singles, the group is laying down tracks for an album that we expect to see hit the streets next year. Several of the songs played at this session should make their first appearances on it, including the outstanding new track “Asteroid” which is streaming below. While this less-than-full complement of players doesn’t quite give you the full Field Mouse experience, it gives as close of an idea as is possible in a small room in a residential area. Besides their ability to write addictive, hook-laden songs, their trademark sense of humor was on display as well. This is one recording where I don’t advise skipping the “banter” tracks.

I recorded this set with a mid-side combination of Schoeps microphones in the center of the room, with my MBHO cardiods serving as both the vocal mic and miking the vocal PA. I have attempted to give a realistic representation of how the band sounded in the room, while trying to capture the power the band has in a larger setting. I hope you enjoy it!

Field Mouse is playing Cameo Gallery on November 23 and Piano’s on December 18. Check out their live shows.

Modern Merchant: September 22, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Modern Merchant have an easy charm to them. Their laid-back sound will suck you in at an instant. But what will keep you coming back are the subtle shifts of tempo and texture that give their arrangements heft. Lead singer John Parson has a steady, soothing voice that heads into euphoric territory when it’s called for, but he knows when to use it. This Backyard Brunch Sessions performance carved back some of the more dream-pop-driven elements of the band’s sound, which are out in force on their current EP, For the Fields. For my money, this live set gave the band’s songs a more natural, lived-in feel that goes well with their natural tendencies. It’s always a nice calling cards to have when the band you’re playing with (in this case, Elizabeth and the Catapult) asks when they can see your next show. It was a compliment well deserved, as Modern Merchant put on a live show worth seeing more than once.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Elizabeth and the Catapult recording, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Elizabeth and the Catapult: September 22, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

As they often do, this year’s edition of Backyard Brunch Sessions gave us a different take on the band Elizabeth and the Catapult than you might get from listening to their official releases. Band founder Elizabeth Ziman, a New York native, has a proud and diverse musical pedigree, from classical education at the Berklee College of Music to work in film scoring to spending some time busking in the subway. Joined by new members (as of the last album, at least) Lauren Balthrop and Jonno Linden, Ziman has been putting together material for a new release, and what we heard on this afternoon were soul-searching, mature evolutions beyond the band’s previous albums Taller Children and The Other Side of Zero.

The new songs also offer some of Ziman’s most compelling hooks yet. Of particular note was “I Wish I Didn’t,” whose tone of resignation was lightened by some humorous moments with the DIY instrument selection. Ziman, Balthrop and Linden joined together for gorgeous vocal harmonies, particularly on “Please Don’t Tell Me A Lie” and “Go Away My Lover”, the lone offering played off of The Other Side of Zero. We also got to hear one of Ziman’s favorite Dawes songs, a lovely rendition of “When My Time Comes” with Ziman and Balthrop doing a soaring vocal turn. The band led off with a Balthrop original, “Please Don’t Tell Me A Lie”, which she has performed with her own project Dear Georgiana. Although this lovely back yard on Grand Street in Williamsburg didn’t feel quite the same as a subway station, the show offered some of that same loose, unadorned feel. And it proved, without doubt, that this band has the skills to keep a crowd excited.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and MK8 microphone in the mid-side configuration in the middle of the band, plus spot mics on the performers. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ume: July 23, 2013 Maxwell’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

There are many reasons to like the Austin band Ume, who’ve been hailed as a Next Big Thing in guitar rock more than a few times by people in the know. They’ve built that reputation on a few solid pillars, the first being an excellent live show helmed by vocalist/guitarist Lauren Langner Larson. Larson is a riot of thrashing hair and gravelly vocals onstage, almost impossible not to watch. The band coasted into Maxwell’s for one of its final nights riding a wave of SXSW buzz and ready to warm up for a show or two in Manhattan in the next days. These shows would also give the band a chance to test out some of the songs for the follow-up to their 2011 album, Phantoms, a cohesive set of music best experienced at high volumes, even better, live in a room.

Ume came out strong on this night with “The Conductor”, one of the highlights from Phantoms, followed by a song they’re calling “Bass Face” for now. They were sharp, intense, rabid — real guitar rock, and proud of it. Then, in the middle of yet another semi-titled song, “Curish”, the band’s momentum took a devastating hit when some house gear blew, causing them to lose guitars. “Curish” stopped.

These are the moments that solidify or break young bands. They either pull through, or they don’t. Ume took a few minutes to re-group, re-write their setlist, switch out gear. Then they pummeled us with another new one, called “On the One” right now. Three more songs after that, whose intensity made up for lost time and momentum. For the band, the night went less-than-ideal. For people like me, who’d never seen them before, it gave a lot of reasons to see them again.

So, in deference to the band, please listen to the concert captured here with this caveat: I can’t claim it’s this band at their best, because they don’t. We felt, and the band agreed, that as this would be their only show at the now-closed legendary club, it was worth having out there as a document for history. And really — if this isn’t this band at their absolute best, how good must that be? I’d urge you to find out by streaming and buying their tracks on bandcamp, and more importantly, seeing them on tour.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from Mitch, a Maxwell’s engineer. The sound quality of the capture it excellent despite the equipment issues on stage.

Alex Bleeker & The Freaks: July 27, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

August 16, 2013

I know I’ve thrown around the term “indie rock jam-band” before. But it’s hard to find a more appropriate label for Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, who used their three quarters of an hour opening for fellow Brooklynites Woods at Bowery Ballroom to play more than a few songs that hearkened to an earlier era in tone and in their ability to flow seamlessly from one to the other. Bleeker, who also serves as bassist in Real Estate, had a birthday on this night, and he treated himself by playing songs that I suspect reminded him of home. You knew this set was going to be right when the band led off with the Grateful Dead’s “Let the Good Times Roll” and went from there into a mix of songs from the band’s latest record and fun-loving covers that did exactly what the first one promised.

If you listen to their new record, How Far Away, you’d be forgiven for the cheap comparison that Bleeker & the Freaks sound almost like a hybrid of Woods and Real Estate at points, with some of the former band’s lo-fi style blending with Real Estate’s easygoing sound. That’s no more in evidence than on “Home I Love”, which made for one of this show’s most compact bursts of good feeling. That led into a superjam of sorts, with three more numbers from the album, with “See You On Sunday” jamming into “Steve’s Theme” and then “Rhythm Shakers” before the band switched gears into Katrina and the Waves’ all-time classic “Walking On Sunshine”. After “Step Right Up (Pour Yourself Some Wine)”, Bleeker toasted his birthday in grand style with their song “Epilogue” teasing Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” into the set closer, Brewer & Shipley’s “One Toke Over the Line”. A happy birthday, indeed.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Woods recording with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from longtime Bowery engineer Kenny. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Woods: July 27, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

As Woods played in front of a fantasia of psychedelic swirls provided by Drippy Eye Projections, I thought back to another of many memorable Woods shows I’ve been to, where they played Abrons Arts Center with the Joshua Light Show, which these projections most resembled. Or there was the time they played St. Cecilia’s Church during the 2011 Northside Festival. Or the first couple times I saw them, in both cases opening for bands they are much bigger than now and whose careers they have outlasted, and thought, wow, these guys are really different. And they’re great.

Like all bands with staying power, Woods have continued to evolve without abandoning the core elements of their sound — Jeremy Earl’s nasal, high pitched voice, the ramshackle folk, the not-quite-retro psychedelia. What has evolved into a very different beast is the band’s now-huge guitar sound, which barely resembles their earlier records and has turned them into a sonic juggernaut live. When the one minute, fifty four second song “I Was Gone” becomes a fourteen-minute behemoth of a jam now, the reaction isn’t being surprised or impressed that they’re trying it — it’s paying attention to what will be good about this version of the song. A Woods set, which rarely runs far past an hour, has become like a controlled dose of Grateful Dead. Every minute is worth watching, and the “jam songs” are ones you feel compelled to debate the best one of, date by date.

This set at Bowery Ballroom, which closed out their latest U.S. tour after a well-received Pitchfork Festival appearance the previous weekend, recalled several elements of the November show at Music Hall that we attended, but with a couple of exciting new offerings. Not only did the band play the new song “Shining”, which we assume will appear on their next record or in recorded format at some point, but they were also joined by Alex Bleeker of opening act Alex Bleeker and the Freaks for a special rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ever-popular “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”. Woods will be spending August in Europe and September on the West Coast. If you’re in either of those places, don’t miss seeing them. Tour dates can be found [HERE].

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from longtime Bowery engineer Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Part of the joy of seeing bands in a small venue is the unpredictability. Small venues, even the best ones, are always fighting hard to hold it together, and it’s often a losing battle. Gear breaks down, beverage lines go stale, some asshole from some opening band breaks your backline, the A/C goes out, the health inspector is on your case, someone’s stealing from the till, someone else called in sick, the toilet’s clogged — owning a small music venue isn’t an endeavor for the faint of heart, or someone who doesn’t want to work. But at the same time, small venues are also where bands take risks. At Madison Square Garden or something, with an enormous light system, you won’t be varying the setlist or stage diving or interacting with a crowd where the nearest people are six feet from the stage. And you don’t have the safety net of a video screen or some other gimmick to make people care. You make them care with your own sweat.

For longer than many of the people in this crowd for …And You Will Know It By the Trail of Dead‘s show had even been going to concerts, the crew at Maxwell’s worked tirelessly to make that club a place that musicians wanted to play, that real fans wanted to hang out in, and that represented the best of their home in Hoboken. And they succeeded, more than most could ever claim to, in all of that.

But you wouldn’t have blamed Trail of Dead if they’d thrown hissy fits and run offstage after the first issue with the circuit breaker shut off the entire PA. Or when a monitor malfunctioned. Or when the PA blew again. They’re a veteran band. They don’t need this shit. But if you want to be the kind of band that plays at Maxwell’s — that stays close to its audience, that remembers where it came from — then you learn to deal. And that’s exactly what the Austin band did. When “Another Morning Stoner” got cut off, they didn’t just move on to the next song. They played a shortened, stripped-down version. They also played one of the most memorable performances of theirs I’ve seen. Try to deny the power of “Will You Smile Again”, the first thing played after the gear got working again, or the searing “A Perfect Teenhood”, or the “Caterwaul” where guitarist/singer Jason Reece took the mic to the back of the room to sing, at one point doing so from inside the sound booth. (The above photo is taken from that area).

In taking a show that had its challenges — that in less cool hands could’ve been a shambolic mess — and turning into a night none of us would forget, they paid the most fitting tribute to the venue of all.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones. While the overall sound quality is excellent, I’d like to emphasize again that the equipment issues are nobody’s “fault” — not the band’s, not the Maxwell’s staff’s. Sometimes, these things happen. Enjoy!
