The Sharp Things: September 11, 2014 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Of all of the thousands reviews I’ve written for NYCTaper, the words needed to describe this performance by The Sharp Things at Mercury Lounge is certainly the most difficult. But these are just words. What the band did on this night was exponentially more difficult than anything I could imagine a musician would have to endure. On the morning of the performance Steve Gonzalez, the longtime and original Sharp Things drummer and multi-decade friend of the band’s protagonist Perry Serpa, passed away at the age of 49. I asked Perry to talk about the night:

He, Steve Gonzalez, was our drummer but also my best friend of almost 40 years, so he was very much a part of our family. We had found out about his passing during our soundcheck for this show and while I was ready to just walk away from it, my band, our bandmates, our family and friends insisted that we play, and so we did. And it was the best thing because the evening ended up being a wonderful, communal celebration of his life in a place that he loved playing.

The band is gearing up for the release of the third album in the four-album “Dogs Of Bushwick” series. Adventurer’s Inn will be released on Dive Records in November. This special Mercury set featured a mix of older numbers and included a few of the newer songs we’ll expect to hear on the new album soon.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cardioids set up at the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH David. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

This week the Growlers released their fifth studio album Chinese Fountain to universally positive reviews. The album represents the continued maturity of this Southern California “beach goth” outfit. While the earlier records went for a kind of lo-fi scuzz-rock production, the new album is a stylistic shift to a more refined sound. The result is that the songs benefit. The Growlers have ultimately always been about the songs — three minute nuggets of melody, surf guitar and clever lyrics — and Chinese Fountain is perhaps their strongest set of songs. The tour in support of the album reached Bowery Ballroom last week and what a show it was. Nevermind that the show was opened by a ten-minute set of tongue-in-cheek karaoke by drag queen “Tina”, or that that mid-set there was an authentic Chinese dragon parade, or that it seemed that the entire band, crew and front rows of the crowd stage-dived for over two hours straight, this show was a monster. The band’s set lasted over two hours and consisted of virtually the entire new album and twenty-nine songs in total, and while the craziness went on all around them the music virtually never stopped. This is a show not be missed, and for those out West the tour continues through October before moving the Europe for November.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in our traditional Bowery balcony spot and mixed with an as-always outstanding board feed from FOH Kenny. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Ty Segall: September 17, 2014 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’m not sure there is a currently working musician who produces as consistently excellent music — live or on record — at does Ty Segall. His new album Manipulator is yet another Ty album that shines from start to finish and the tour in support has raged from city to city. Last week Ty Segall came to NYC for two shows at Webster Hall (alas no secret DBA show) and we were there for the first night on Wednesday. Ty’s fans always vociferously exhibit their love for his music and this night was no different. Five songs into the set the venue’s crew had to remove the metal photo pit barrier to avoid crushing people to death. After a quick break, the set continued in earnest and the new space permitted a neverending parade of stage divers and jumpers, including ultimately the artist himself. The setlist was similar to most recent tours in that the band played most of the new album (in this case 13 of 17 tracks) before the second half of the night was dedicated to the older material. But the crowd was with them all the way — old or new — for the full ninety minute set. We’re streaming one of our favorite tracks from the new album “Green Belly”. Ty Segall’s US tour is coming to a close in the next few days, but he’ll then spend six weeks touring through Europe.

I recorded this set from the soundboard perch in the front and center below the balcony with the Schoeps cards mixed with an excellent feed from house FOH Rafael. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Greensky Bluegrass: September 13, 2014 Gramercy Theatre – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

As was pointed out in our previous review of Greensky Bluegrass, not a ton of bluegrass makes it onto this site, despite the growing popularity of the “newgrass” genre that has spread around the country, but especially in its heartland. We have had a few since then — the Infamous Stringdusters and North Carolina’s Chatham County Line — but the genre remains outside of our main focus. So, it was something a bit different to brave a Saturday night crowd for Greensky at the Gramercy Theatre, a comfortable and nice-sounding venue that nonetheless has been as foreign to this site as bluegrass itself. Well, we can hope that changes, too.

Greensky showed up at Gramercy ready and pumped for a full house clearly drinking for the weekend, as their crowds are wont to do. The band has a new album just out, If Sorrows Swim, and shared a good chunk of it. These two sets ran nice and Saturday-night long, bookended between the two by an extended cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” followed by an exploratory take on “Don’t Lie” from their 2011 record Handguns. The band were exactly as Michigan-nice as you’d expect, grateful to be there, bantering amiably with the crowd, and giving generously to the crowd. If anything, their set gave us good evidence of how this classic American genre can be tweaked to appeal to a modern audience, and it deserves the attention it has received, with these guys at the forefront.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones at the soundboard, as high as they would go, pointed at the stacks. Despite a chatty Saturday night crowd, these narrow-patterned mics avoided that and provided gobs of direct sound. The result is excellent. Enjoy!

Jane Lee Hooker: September 8, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’ve been interested in seeing Jane Lee Hooker for quite some time. The concept of the band — that is an all-female blues band made up of punk rock veterans — seemed interesting and potentially a whole lot of fun. When I finally saw JLH at Knitting Factory last week, any fears that the band might be a gimmick were very soon allayed. The dual lead guitars of Hightop and T-Bone were instantly recognizable as the driving force behind this band and that shouldn’t come as a surprise as both guitarists have deep pedigree as co-members of Helldorado and Hightop as a member of Nashville Pussy. Veteran punk rockers bassist Hail Mary and drummer Cool Whip are the backbone of the band and out front is the vibrant vocalist Dana Danger. As a unit Jane Lee Hooker is super-tight, reflecting not only their experience but musical familiarity among the members. But the real attraction is the raw energy that the quintet exhibits on stage. The setlist is a series of classic blues covers conveyed in an authentic style faithful the originals but reflected through the looking glass of New York punk. JLH is such a revelation that none other than legendary bassist Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, Mekons) approached me and raved about the band, asking when the recording would be available. JLH recently returned from a local tour and will appear again in NYC next week at Mercury Lounge on September 24.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted high next to the soundboard and mixed with a superb feed provided by house engineers Keith Milgaten and Ben Fitterman. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Heroes of Toolik: May 14, 2014 Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Heroes of Toolik are an art rock band from the New York/New Jersey area comprised of veteran players – Peter Zummo (trombone) is an avant jazzer (ex-Lounge Lizards), while Arad Evans (guitar/vocals) has toured with avant-noise luminaries Rhys Chatham and is a current member of the Glenn Branca Ensemble. Ernie Brooks (bass) was in the original Modern Lovers, while Jennifer Coates (violin/vocals) is an accomplished old style country fiddler with her own band, Jenny Gets Around. What comes together among the group of them is a brand of well-informed rock n’ roll that draws on these influences without over-complicating itself.

This show at Cameo Gallery served as a warmup for Heroes of Toolik’s just-released Aquarium School seven-inch, and found the band previewing that material alongside work from their 2012 debut LP Winter Moon. The band performs with the cohesive, relaxed vibe you’d expect of accomplished musicians, and the stylistic palette of these tunes reflected artists from the Velvet Underground to Zappa and Beefheart to hints (for me) of the Grateful Dead. The band gave us two takes of “Aquarium School”, which was also being filmed for video, the better of which came at the end of the set and is the version recorded here. We recommend you check out their upcoming gig on September 24 at the Zurcher Gallery in Manhattan, which should be a fine combination of an art rock band playing among visual artwork. The gallery is featuring work by Michael Dotson and Irena Jurek from now through just after the date of the show.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed from the house engineer, Brendon Clark. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Marah: July 26, 2014 XPonential Music Festival, Marina Stage (Camden, NJ) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Marah‘s latest album, Mountain Minstrelsy of Pennsylvania, represents an audacious turn for the Philadelphia-based roots rock band, as the band decided to bring folk songs discovered in the 1930s screaming into the 21st century more or less intact (you can read more in our post from last month, here). For a band willing to do that, I guess having a ten-year-old join the band as a permanent member — on fiddle as well as guitar no less — seemed like an achievable feat.

If part of this audience at the XPonential Music Festival, presented by WXPN, came to take in the novelty of watching young Gus Tritsch take the stage, they stayed because he and the band were setting the entire outdoor Marina Stage on fire. In addition to rockified versions of the Mountain Minstrelsy songs, the band served up classics from their catalog like 2000’s “The Catfisherman” and the acoustic “City of Dreams”, about vocalist David Bielanko’s hometown of Philadelphia. As with the Bowery Electric show, we got to experience some of the band’s fiercest jamming on the hard-charging version of “Rattlesnake” transformed a great deal from the short-but-sweet album version into an epic sendoff.

I recorded this set with a flawless soundboard feed from the local engineer Tom, combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones flying back at the board. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Commonwealth Choir: July 26, 2014 XPonential Fest – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It must be a difficult task to be the opening band of a festival at the bright hour of twelve-thirty p.m. There’s the simple fact that many of the crowd may not have yet reached the venue and also the struggle to get the early-arrivers rocking when its barely afternoon. But the XPonential Festival chose well on Saturday when the Commonwealth Choir opened the show at the River Stage. The band is originally from Doylestown PA but have moved 30 miles down the road into the City of Philadelphia, the skyline of which was outlined behind the stage. Commonwealth Choir are five young men with unbridled energy and that served them well for this early set. As you can tell from the recording, the band was eager to start and made quite an impression in their too-brief thirty minute set. But by the third song, the pit filled quickly and people were moving to the music. Commonwealth Choir released an EP Shirtless in the Fall, and WXPN featured the song “Rest” in their regular rotation. We’re streaming that track below. Its pretty easy to predict that Commonwealth Choir is going places — their infectious power-pop and charismatic stage presence bodes well for future success.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Hurray For The Riff Raff set and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The best way for an artist to maintain perspective in the lofty heights of current success is to remember from whence they came. Hurray For The Riff Raff have had a tremendously successful and well-deserved couple of years. Its a growth in stature that we’ve been both fortunate to experience first hand and for which we’ve unabashedly rooted. At last week’s XPonential Fest, Hurray For The Riff Raff performed for the largest crowd before which we’ve ever seen them play. At the point when their set began, despite the wind and pouring rain, the amphitheatre of the River Stage at Camden Waterfront was packed and the pit was full with several thousand people. And while the band’s set did rely heavily on their superb new album Small Town Heroes, it was the selection of what Alynda described as one of the first songs she ever wrote, and one she played during her days busking in New Orleans, that showed a perspective and humility about her current success. We’re streaming “Here It Comes”, which featured Alynda on banjo but with the full band treatment fits in quite nicely with the band’s current material. Hurray For The Riff Raff will continue their active touring throughout the Fall, including stops at multiple festivals. And speaking of playing before thousands, their next show in NYC will be at Terminal 5.

I recorded this set with the new Schoeps CCM4U cardioids from directly in front of the soundboard and mixed it with the feed that was also broadcast live on WXPN. The use of the open air mics during this rainy set does contain some minor wind noise, but overall the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

The Wytches: July 24, 2014 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Wytches are an interesting amalgam of neo-psychedelia, 70s-style acid rock and 90s alternative. The British trio has released a series of singles and EPs on smaller labels in England but are now poised to break in the US with the release of their debut album Annabel Dream Reader on Partisan Records. In that regard, The Wytches came to the US this month for their first US tour. On Thursday, we caught the band’s first-ever NYC show and it was a burner. In a packed and darkened Mercury Lounge, The Wytches live show relied less on the spacey side of their music and stressed the louder elements — this was not some loopy psychedelic prace but a full-on heavy acid-rock set from the outset with lead singer Kristian Bell growling out vocals to the one-two punch openers of “Digsaw” and “Burn Out the Bruise”. We’re streaming the band’s latest and perhaps most popular single “Wire Frame Mattress” which was also heavier live than on record. The balance of the set touched on most of the material that will appear on the new record, a couple of b-sides and one new song. The Wytches will return to the UK for touring throughout August and early September, but we expect they’ll be back stateside in the Fall.

I recorded this set with my newly purchased Schoeps CCM4Ug compact cardioid microphones. The mics picked up a little bit of chatter in the soundscape but overall I’m really happy with the sweet sound. The mics are mixed with an excellent soundboard feed provided by Merc FOH Dave. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
