Old 97s: March 15, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

There was a brief time in my life when the Old 97s were one of my top 3 favorite bands. 1999’s Fight Songs is a perfect album and one that I played on rotation an infinite number of times. I’ve always felt that Fight Songs was a more consistently excellent album even than Wilco’s Summerteeth, also released in ’99 — a more truly realized blend of alt-country and pop that both albums sought to achieve. Although Satellite Rides was a worthy follow-up, and I’ve seen them a few times this century (including this 2007 concert on nyctaper) I’ll admit that I lost touch with the band over the years. But its always rewarding to catch up with an old favorite and that we did at the Capital Theatre in Portchester last month. Old 97s performed a superb 20-song headliner-length set opening for Drive By Truckers, and the magic was back. They barreled through many of the hits in a set that was high energy, focused, and virtually never came up for air. We’re streaming “Lonely Holiday” below. The Old 97s will return to NYC for a three-night run at Brooklyn Bowl on June 27-29.

This recording was captured in the same manner as the Drive By Truckers set and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Spacin’: April 4, 2013 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

SPACIN
[uncredited photo from last.fm – will credit if info provided]

The band Spacin’ began as the solo project of Jason Killinger, who was also a member of Birds of Maya. Philadelphia has produced a plethora of superb gargage-influenced music over the last several years and Killinger’s contribution is no less impressive than others such as Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, and Purling Hiss. In fact, Killinger teamed with Purling Hiss’ Mike Polizze in Birds of Maya, and their solo bands just completed a tour together. On Thursday last, we caught Spacin’ opening for the Hiss at 285 Kent and their set, although short in song titles and total time was a superb neo-psych/garage workout which included a couple of numbers from their debut album Deep Thuds, a couple of apparent new songs, and a killer cover the the MC5’s “American Ruse” (streaming below). Now that Spacin’ is on our radar, we won’t miss their NYC shows.

This set was recorded in the same manner as the Purling Hiss set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Caveman: April 10, 2013 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Caveman has come a long way very quickly since we first saw them 18 months ago as an opening band at Cameo Gallery. At that show, opening for fellow quick-climbers The War On Drugs, it was fairly obvious that Caveman would be going places. A couple of months later they were playing larger gigs, and when their debut CoCo Beware was picked up by Fat Possum Records, the band went national. This month, the band released their anticipated follow-up to CoCo, a self-titled second album that retains the band keen sense of melody and 80s-influenced pop while taking the next step. Caveman is a more mature and more consistently excellent album — just exactly the kind of second album that bodes well for the long term future of Caveman. On Wednesday night at Webster Hall, the band celebrated a homecoming and the CD’s new release with a triumphant show before a packed house. The setlist included most of the band’s recorded material and they were simply ebullient throughout the seventy-five minute set. Matthew Iwanusa spent much of the between-song banter thanking the crowd and acknowledging the band’s fortunes, and the feeling was mutual.

We recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted inside the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by the band’s touring FOH. Enjoy!

Drive By Truckers: March 15, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

A Drive By Truckers concert can be an exhausting and exhilarating experience. The show is jam-packed with superb material — songs filled with emotion, humor and expert storytelling. At the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Friday night, DBT played one of the longest shows we’ve seen in years, not just in time but also in just pure music. The set was almost continuous, no banter, no tuning, no messing around. And at a full two and half hours, twenty seven songs and forty-minute, 9 song encore, it was exhausting. A good portion of the partying weekend crowd did not make it to the end. But for those who stuck it out, it was also a rewarding show. DBT can never be accused of giving anything less than 100% and Friday was no exception. The band was engaging and energetic and the highlights were a plenty. We’re streaming “Let There Be Rock”, which features a mix of all that makes Drive By Truckers great.

I recorded this show in the assigned taping spot in this venue, behind the soundboard and dead center. Although we’d prefer to be about 20 feet further up, this spot does offer decent sound and much of the conveniences of this excellent venue. The recording has some flaws, crowd chatter among them, but overall its a fine listen. Enjoy!

Stormshadow: February 9, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We make no secret of the fact that we’re big fans of Don Giovanni Records, the label’s leaders Joe and Zach, and the outstanding music they release. At this year’s DGR showcase, the label celebrated their 10th anniversary and spurred the reunion of one of New Brunswick’s legendary punk bands. Stormshadow released only one album Set On Destroy on CD-R and sold it at their shows. On the very day the band played their first show in over a decade at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Don Giovanni gave their album a proper release. At Music Hall, the band played 9 songs from the album in a twelve-song twenty-five minute set that went all too quickly. Stormshadow is one of those Minutemen-styled punk bands that is intelligent, energetic and able to effortlessly meld genres. The wrinkle in their sound is the male-female vocals which gives them a three-dimensional sound. Perhaps motivated by the success of this set, Stormshadow will now be playing more shows, including one on March 30 at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets from this night and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Deafheaven: February 22, 2013 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Deafheaven UnArtig Cap
[screenshot from UnArtigNYC video]

I have attended thousands of concerts over the years, so its not very often when a performer literally takes my breath away. At Saint Vitus on Friday night, Deafheaven was one of the few bands that effected me this way. The band opened their set with the first song of their debut album Roads to Judah “Violet” which begins with a very un-Metal like dual-guitar melodic passage before it crashes into the song proper, and features the intense screaming vocals of lead singer George Clarke. From that point forward, it was hard to take my eyes off Clarke whose magnetic stage presence and breathtaking vocals demand awe-inspired attention. And when Deafheaven begins a song, it doesn’t end quickly. The nearly hour-long set contained five songs — the first 3 tracks from Judah, a Mogwai dual-cover (streaming below) and a new song from their forthcoming album Sunbather. Throughout the show, Clarke’s unrelenting energy never wavered, and at its conclusion it was likely the audience and not the singer who needed oxygen. Deafheaven is from San Francisco, but came all the way East for this one-off show in support of Sacrament and Sannhet. They will tour Europe in April, dates here.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Sannhet set and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!

Shellshag: February 9, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Shellshag have a modest but very loyal following and on this recording from a couple of weeks ago at the second night of the Don Giovanni Records showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg, you can hear them chant the band’s name in between songs. One of the reasons for this kind of support is that Shellshag is authentic — the duo have worked the DIY scene in multiple cities over the last fifteen years. Their recent partnership with Don Giovanni has worked well for both, as their appearances as the annual showcases have been highlight, and their last album Rumors in Disguise is perhaps their best yet. The relationship fortunately continues this year as Shellshag is poised to release a new album Shellshag Forever on DGR in April. The band revealed a new track this week, “Face to Face” (the live version is streaming below), which seems not only autobiographical but also describes the live layout of the duo on stage. While we wish greater exposure for a band that truly deserves it, and this new album could very well be that spark, like their vocal fans at Music Hall, sometimes we’re happy Shellshag remains our little secret.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Screaming Females set and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Retribution Gospel Choir: February 12, 2013 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Retribution Gospel Choir has a new album called simply 3 which features a grand total of two songs, each of which is twenty minutes long. This is a departure for the band whose albums have previously consisted of solid standard-length post-rock material. The album also features a guest appearance from Nels Cline — guitarist extraordinaire, LA rock/jazz/experimental legend, and long time member of Wilco. On Tuesday night at Knitting Factory, RGC headlined a show at also had Nels’ jazz trio BBC on the bill, and when it came time for setup of the main set, we were excited to see Nels set up his pedals to play. The opportunity to witness duel guitar shredding of RGC’s Alan Sparhawk and Nels from the front row of the Knit was one of my more memorable recent music highlights and not one I will soon forget. We are streaming that track below. The recent Retribution Gospel Choir tour is now complete, but Alan will return to NYC with his main band Low in March.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser microphones set up at the soundboard cage and mixed with a feed. Enjoy!

Laura Stevenson: February 8, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We last saw Laura Stevenson exactly a year ago, at last year’s Don Giovanni showcase where she was a mid-bill act. In the year that followed, Laura has ramped up her career to the point where she was the Friday night headliner and brought out a respectable crowd on the night of the blizzard of the century, even when her family could not make it in from Long Island. She released an EP this month in anticipation of her new album Wheel, which will be released in April. At Music Hall on Friday, she and her band The Cans performed an hour long set which highlighted Laura’s strengths, sweet vocals and superb songwriting — the sort of confessional folk-influenced style that can be redundant, but in the hands of craftsperson like Stevenson is a joy to behold. She only played a handful of songs from Wheel, along with a nice selection from her several previous albums, but the new material is quite strong. We expect that after the release of the new album, she’ll climb to even greater heights. Laura Stevenson will be on tour throughout March including multiple SXSW shows, dates [here].

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Jeffrey Lewis recording and the sound is equally superb.
