Old 97s: June 27, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In March, we reconnected with the Old 97s at their highly enjoyable set at the Capital Theatre in Portchester. So I guess it was only natural that we would attend their next NYC show, this time as a play-a-full-album three night run at Brooklyn Bowl — one of our old favorites at one of our current favorite venues. The first night album was appropriately the band’s first album Hitchhike to Rhome played from start to finish, including a bonus track, a hidden track, and even an outtake from the album’s sessions. At the conclusion of Rhome, the Old 97s played another dozen tracks, making this both an lengthy and highly entertaining set. The band’s performance was both inspired and tight — clearly a band comfortable with their past and their present.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 cards pointed at the right stack midway on the right side of the floor. The ambient noise (bowling and chatter) is greatly reduced with the addition of a board feed, synced in at about 40% of the overall mix. The result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Deafheaven: July 2, 2013 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Deafheaven’s new album Sunbather is a game-changer in so many ways. Its been called “a modern classic” and a “pinnacle of American black metal” by preeminent metal writer Brandon Stosuy. The album’s universal critical acclaim and the increased crowds that will inevitably gather for the band’s uber-intense live shows mean ultimately that Deafheaven is on a very steep trajectory to the apex of its genre. There will not be (m)any more nights like Tuesday at Saint Vitus, where the packed crowd saw the band deliver a show for the ages. Opening with a quiet guitar introduction, the band then crashed into Sunbather’s first track “Dream House”, and the level of energy did not subside until the band and the audience came up for a breath of air before the final song. One of Deafheaven’s strengths is their ability to seamlessly transition from one apparent genre to another. We are streaming “The Pecan Tree” which encapsulates this ability multiple times within one track. The song opens with a dead start directly into a “screamo” black metal segment before evolving mid-track into a melodic post-rock guitar passage and then concludes in full Deafheaven mode while vocalist George Clarke belts out what is perhaps the darkest lyrics of the entire album “I am no one. I cannot love. It’s in my blood.” Deafheaven’s current tour concludes with two shows in the Midwest — Cleveland on Friday and Chicago on Saturday. If you live in one of those two cities, we recommend that you not miss this band.

I recorded this show with the Sennheiser cardioids set up in the rear of the room and mixed it with a board feed. The strengths of both sources compliment each other and the result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 21, 2013 Solid Sound Festival – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’ve taken road trips before to see Wilco. But I’ll admit that the trip from NYC to Northeast Massachusetts there-and-back in one day was quite a lark. We applied for media credentials months ago, and PSquared got his weeks ago, but mine came through just this past week. I moved some scheduling things around, freed up all Friday and we drove up in the afternoon. It was still light out when we arrived in North Adams, and the quaint beauty of the town was immediately recognizable. The Solid Sound Festival takes place on the grounds of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) which is located on the re-purposed grounds of all old factory and the riverside lands that surround it, and the entire complex is simply stunning in its classic charm. The riverside field next to the train tracks is the location for the large outdoor stage and is where Wilco performed. I knew this would be an “all request” set, but I was surprised to hear the rumors pre-show that it would be an all covers show. From the opening notes of the appropriate “The Boys Are Back in Town”, I sensed that this would be a very unique and special evening — and that’s exactly what we experienced. The band worked through a quick run of a handful of excellent covers before comedian John Hodgman came on stage as the “emcee”. In the both the running “randomizer” bit and the “stump the band” segment, Hodgman ribbed the band and provided an almost variety-show atmosphere to the set, which gave the show both levity and a theme. The covers were classic (Beatles, Stones, The Band), alternative (Replacements, Pavement), and pretty much everything in between — all played pretty straight-on in Wilco’s patented style. Our two favorite tracks of the evening were the epic cover of Television’s “Marquee Moon” (streaming below) which during the performance began to sound very much like the band’s own “Kidsmoke”, and reminded me that Wilco was not just playing covers but also telling us a little about what has influenced their music. For the Replacements “Color Me Impressed” (also streaming) Wilco brought out a very unexpected guest, original Replacement bassist Tommy Stinson, who played guitar on the song. It was that kind of once in a lifetime show, with constant smiles and surprises. And just when we thought we’d heard it all Wilco played a head-scratcher, a fairly straight forward rendition of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”. That one is sure to get much of the attention, but this night was much bigger than any single song. At the end of the final cover, a state-appropriate “Roadrunner”, one of my fellow tapers asked me if the extended trip was worth it. Oh, yeah.

I recorded this set from inside the soundboard cage in the middle of the field. While the elements and distance were a bit of an issue, overall the sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

The Antlers: June 12, 2013 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Antlers are currently experiencing that in-between-albums and between-tours lull that bands enjoy after working non-stop for years in row. The period usually includes writing in the studio, solo projects and unfortunately for fans, a dearth of shows. Last Wednesday, it was the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the eclectic and groundbreaking club Le Poisson Rouge that brought the band out to play a sold out one-off show. The band’s singer and guitarist Peter Silberman at one time worked at LPR before the Antlers became his full-time vocation, and in fact the first listening party for the original self-release of Hospice took place at the club. Several years hence, the band now has two more releases to their name — enough material to play a full 90 minute show virtually without pause. The setlist was a democratic selection from each of the recent releases, including 3 of the 4 songs from last year’s Undersea EP, about half of Burst Apart, and some prime material from Hospice. We are streaming “Wake”, a powerful version that ended the main set.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards in back of the room mixed with a superb stereo soundboard feed. Due to the position of the mics, I picked up a ton of chatter and this mix is primarily the board. Enjoy!

Amanda Palmer: May 25, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming (Mermaid Support Download)

I think its fair to say that Amanda Palmer is an artist who generates strong feelings. Her followers are passionate ardent supporters. I consider myself one of them. We love her persona, her music, and her fan-based approach to the business of music. But she has her detractors, some of whom are my friends and who I consider to be honestly misguided. We agree to disagree. Others unfortunately are loud obnoxious self-loathing misogynist thugs who hate simply because a woman with a strong personality cuts against the grain of traditional approaches to music. Whatever your feelings, you have to respect what she did on Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom. Amanda was sick, but took a train from Boston to play a show for free to support a very worthy cause, the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, which due to storm damage, is in danger of being canceled this year. For her headlining set, Amanda also brought out all the stops. The set opened with her grand entrance, carried onto the stage in a mermaid outfit, where she opened with a cover of the Disney Little Mermaid theme “Part of Your World.” The setlist consisted of a mix of eclectic covers, classic AFP material, a compelling new song, and the surprise of the evening, a Dresden Dolls reunion and the performance of two Neutral Milk Hotel covers. Amanda ended the memorable night was the classic “Ukelele Anthem” which we’re streaming below. Amanda Palmer will return to NYC with the Grand Theft Orchestra for a free outdoor show at Damrosch Park on August 9.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, Sennheiser cards mounted in the balcony and mixed with an excellent board feed. The room was again expertly mixed by Bowery FOH Kenny, and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Iron and Wine: May 19, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Exactly four years ago, Sam Beam took Iron and Wine into a series of intimate venues for a solo tour of very memorable nights. We were fortunate to capture one of the two nights at the tiny Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side and it was one of the best shows we saw that year. On Sunday night, we caught the Portchester stop on the current tour and the stage setting couldn’t have been any more different. This version of Iron and Wine has 13 people on stage, including a horn section and a string trio. Sam is touring on the new album Ghost On Ghost and the new release is a “big” record with wide arrangements and touches of jazz, bebop and ragtime, which makes the big band necessary for the new material but also offers the opportunity to re-figure some older material. Early in the set we were moved by the new arrangement of “Kingdom of the Animals” and we are streaming it below. The Capitol show was lengthy with a representative setlist of older and new songs and a few covers, and also included a short solo segment mid-set. Despite the nearly two hours of music, the juxtaposition of styles, witty banter and full stage kept the show moving and it was thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining throughout. Iron and Wine will tour Europe beginning later this month before returning for Fall dates in Canada and the US.

I recorded this set under some difficult circumstances. Due to venue restrictions for a seated show, I was set up at the very rear of the floor and was only permitted to raise the mic stand to about 4 feet. The result is that the recording is somewhat muffled, but more troublingly the low height captured a hum/buzz in the left channel from what I believe was the lighting system in front of the mics. Otherwise, the recording is well balanced and has a nice deep presence. With these caveats, enjoy!

The Brooklyn What: April 21, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If you’re the opening act and at the end of your set the crowd is literally chanting the name of your band, you’re doing something right. A couple of weeks back, the Brooklyn What opened for Dead Milkmen at Bowery Ballroom and their set was so damned entertaining that there was a mosh pit, stage diving and yes indeed, as you can hear at the end of the recording, the crowd chanting their name. The Brooklyn What are an amalgam of styles, with influences as wide at the New York Dolls, the Minutemen, and 1960s Brooklyn do-wop — performed with an uninhibited and indefatigable style. Lead singer and frontman Jamie Frey is a ball of energy who from the outset of the show engaged the crowd. As a result, the band got the attention they deserved throughout the set, built the momentum and finished with perhaps the best response we’ve ever seen from an opening set. The Brooklyn What played much of their new album Hot Wine, some older material and a couple of well-received covers. The band will play again later this month in a show at Shea Stadium on May 16.

We recorded this show in the same manner at the Dead Milkmen set and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Swearin: April 20, 2013 Maxwell’s – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We’re big fans of Crutchfields here at NYCTaper. First, there was Katie’s band Waxahatchee, from the Don Giovanni showcase earlier this year. Today its Swearin, the Brooklyn/Philly quartet co-fronted by Allison Crutchfield with Kyle Gilbride. Swearin were the third of the five band bill assembled at Maxwell’s to celebrate the new CD release by Shellshag on Saturday last. I was initially unfamiliar with the band, but immediately perked up my ears as their set contained instant catchy hooks and an energy that was hard to miss. As with their self-titled debut album, all of the songs in their set were 2-3 minute bursts of pop-punk goodness. We’re streaming “Movie Star” below which features Allison belting out her most heartfelt vocals of their short show. Swearin will play Death By Audio on May 10, also sharing a bill with Shellshag.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Screaming Females set, and except for some noticeable crowd chatter in between songs, the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Akron/Family: April 24, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

To paraphrase the Beatles, I thought I knew Akron/Family, what did I know. A band that I had returned to see live ten or so times were “must-see” because their shows have always been immensely enjoyable — celebratory and tribal, the material has alternated between melodic and hypnotic jamming and sweet (and sometimes very quiet) ballads. The current tour for the new album Sub Verses (officially released today April 30) is a very different affair indeed. As I tweeted during the Bowery Ballroom show on Wednesday, this current incarnation of Akron/Family is dense and very heavy. There wasn’t much banter or crowd participation, as we’ve experienced at older A/F shows, but the music was equally moving in a profoundly different way. The band has added electronics wiz M Geddes Gengras for this tour and his contribution of throbbing electronic bass and crunch/noise fits perfectly with the thematic nature of Sub Verses, which has been described by the band as having a “SciFi aesthetic” and “propulsive and driven by it’s physicality”, which are both very much accurate. At Bowery, the band played all but one of the new album’s 10 tracks, and just two songs of older material. We are streaming “Sand Time” below. The current tour swings South this week before finishing in LA on May 8.

I recorded this set from our standard balcony rail location in this venue and mixed with an excellent board feed provided by Akron Family’s FOH Tom Tierney. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The old corporate music industry used to do this band-kill all the time — label a legitimate band the “next big thing”, turn their career upside down and ultimately cause them to crash and burn. The most extreme example is the Bangles, who went from LA paisley-folkies to glamor girls to defunct in about two years. After several excellent albums and a few breakthrough songs, in 1991 the Dead Milkmen went through the music industry meat grinder, and did not survive. The band broke up in the mid-90s and it stayed apart for over a decade. It took the death of original bassist Dave Schulthise to bring the band together for a tribute concert, and fortunately for their fans it sparked a permanent reunion. Unburdened by industry pressures and aided by decades of life experience, the Dead Milkmen are back as live performers to where they were in the late 80s, a relaxed humorous group of regular guys who also happen to be an extremely entertaining band. At Bowery Ballroom on Sunday night, a packed crowd saw the band work through an excellent selection of choice older material mixed in with some new songs, in a 85-minute set that was everything we’d hoped for, energetic, well-played and an absolute hoot. Rodney Anonymous wasn’t feeling that well, but rather than letting his health to negatively effect his performance, he turned it into a positive as he allowed a revolving group of rabid fans to sing selected lines from songs they all knew by heart. He even used it as a joke — “how do you get sick on a 3-show tour”. Ultimately, the band used the theme of the night — that “Dream On” should be the State song of Massachusetts — as motivation for an unexpected (not on the written setlist) tongue-in-cheek full-on cover of the Aerosmith classic to end the show. After an extended encore segment, the crowd departed with what this band has always given their fans, a big smile.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mounted in our usual balcony position and supplemented with a board feed. Since the room sounded excellent on this night, the mix is predominantly room mics, with a 20% feed used to clarify the vocals and keys. The result is a superb recording which captures the crazy energy of the show. Enjoy!
