AJJ: November 7, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

This year is the tenth anniversary of AJJ’s (then known as Andrew Jackson Jihad) second release, their breakout album People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World. In celebration, the band’s founders Sean Bonnette and Ben Gallaty are touring as a duo and opening the shows by playing the album straight through. The second half of the show is a selection of material from this post-People period of their career. The tour reached Bowery Ballroom last week for an inspired and intimate show that permitted AJJ’s rabid fans an up close and personal experience of this duo show.

Sean and Ben were up for the challenge, as the acoustic guitar and stand-up bass/cello filled the room while Sean’s fervent vocals delivered the personal material with the commitment that made the album such an important step in the evolution of the anti-folk movement ten years ago. The sold out Bowery crowd sang along with every word and you can hear them clearly on the recording — not as hindrance but as a true part of the performance. AJJ also talked and joked with the crowd about a variety of experiences and random thoughts, so that it almost felt, as Ben quipped, like a session of “AJJ Storytellers”. There were a few positive wrinkles in the setlist for this show including a fan request honored for the Todd Snider cover “Just Like Old Times” that contained a very special introduction for us. AJJ also called a few audibles, the most notable being what appears to be the first tour appearance of “Small Red Boy”, the emotional center of the band’s most recent album The Bible 2. We are not sure when AJJ will return to NYC — likely on the cycle of a new album tour — but we’ll of course be there. The current tour continues throughout November and into December, all dates here. The band will also return East for what I believe is a full band show at the Front Bottoms Champagne Jam in Asbury Park NJ in December.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in our standard place at the front of the balcony and mixed with a perfect feed from house FOH Danielle. The mix captures both the clear sound of the feed and the audience participation of the room mics for a superbly balanced recording. We’re really happy with this one. Enjoy!

Andrew Jackson Jihad: July 18, 2015 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its actually kind of odd that I had not previously seen Andrew Jackson Jihad in their ten years of existence. The band displays a set of influences that could come right off the the pages of NYCTaper — Dead Milkmen, Moldy Peaches and of course the Mountain Goats, among others. Indeed anti-folk legend and old friend of the site Jeffrey Lewis opened this show. The band also now records for one of our favorite labels, Side One Dummy Records. But all was remedied on Friday night at the Knitting Factory. Due to personal plans I arrived late to this show, midway through Jeffrey’s set. When I opened the door to the performance room at the Knit it was hard to even navigate my way to the recording spot as the room was absolutely packed. When Andrew Jackson Jihad took the stage, the crowd became a single force, pogo-ing and shouting the words to every song in unison. This was one of the more animated audiences I’ve seen in quite a long time and the band responded in kind. The set drew from their entire catalog but with a concentration on 2014’s Christmas Island, with more than half of that album included in the setlist. We are streaming a song from that album “Linda Ronstadt” below, along with the band’s crazy encore, where they fit 16 cover songs into a less-than-five-minute mashup. AJJ has a couple of date in the States before they head to Australia for September, tour dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at the soundboard booth and blended with a feed mixed expertly by the band’s FOH Rick. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

There’s a really nice set of photos from this show at DMNDR [here].

PUP: February 21, 2014 Cameo Gallery – Flac/MP3/Streaming

PUP
(still from this video)

The Toronto punk scene is one of the current hotbeds for music, and PUP is the latest band to emerge internationally. PUP won the CBC Best New Artist award in 2013, and the band recently signed to legendary US indie Side One Dummy Records. The band returned from a tour of Britain where they headlined at the NME Awards, and began another tour with a headlining show at Cameo Gallery on Friday night. As we reported back in October, this is not a band to miss. The band’s energy was at max throughout the set, as they rifled through a set of material from their album, one old request, and two punk covers. The band’s cover of Jay Reatard’s “My Shadow” made a bit of a splash on the web this month and the live version was as powerful as expected, but it was the surprise encore of the Dead Kennedys’ “Too Drunk To Fuck” that impressed with its humor and faithfulness to the original. We’re streaming that below. PUP’s current tour starts out West, crosses the US and lands in SXSW before coming East. PUP will play the Mercury Lounge on March 25. The album will be released on April 8.

We recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted high in front of the board and mixed with a fine matrix feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Trapper Schoepp and The Shades: June 27, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Trapper Schoepp and The Shades is the kind of band that you see and immediately know that they are going places. At Brooklyn Bowl a couple of weeks back, they opened the first night of the Old 97s three-peat and immediately grabbed the attention of the incoming crowd. Trapper and the band hail from Wisconsin, but their music is pure Americana as comfortable in the Midwest, the South or even NYC. Their album Run, Engine, Run was released last Fall, and the setlist consisted of primarily tracks from the album, but also a couple of strong new songs. Trapper and his bandmates have a natural ease and a positive vibe on stage and their talents are obvious. Like many of today’s bigger Americana bands, if they are willing to be road warriors, in the coming years the crowds and the venues will continue to grow. Trapper Schoepp and The Shades will be playing mostly midwest dates this Summer, but when they come East again we’ll be there.

I recorded this same in the same manner as the Old 97s show and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!
